About this property
Thorn & Feather (Vermaaklikheid)
Rented on an exclusive basis (there are no other guests on the property during your stay). Set on a ridge of afromontane forest overlooking a spectacular river, 6 Km from San Sebastian Bay. A fully stocked water sports store and guests enjoy private access to the Duiwenhoks river. Two plunge pools filled with pure spring water, multiple entertainment decks and barbeque facilities. Max. capacity is 6 adults and 3 children. Three separate sleeping cabins (low walled stone cottages) interlinked by well maintained walkways - togetherness and privacy is the aim.
but where and what is Vermaaklikheid?? .......... allow one of our guests to let rip as follows:
“In a land far away... happiness is a hamlet called Vermaaklikheid. Its unpronounceability may have saved it from becoming the next hipster place-to-be, or it could be just a tiny bit far for the masses to come for the weekend. Either way, long may the madding crowds stay away. Here you will find rustic, barefoot tranquillity at its most raw and simple best. Three separate stone bedrooms sleep up to nine rosy-cheeked river dwellers, sharing the Bath House (an indoor/outdoor affair with piping hot water pumped from the donkey boiler to a large stone bath and shower), two outdoor showers and two separate loos. These river folk (that's you) gather in the evenings around abundant fireplaces both inside and outside the main living and cooking house, overlooking the moody waters of the Duiwenhoks River. Manicured gravel pathways wind between the buildings, past pool and yoga deck and down to the boathouse, where canoes and paddles are stowed ready for long days floating up and down the river. The beach is just a few kilometres away if you fancy a surf, with plenty of hiking and mountain biking to be done along deserted dirt roads in all directions. Completely off the grid, time stands still here and the modern world fades away.
Thorn & Feather will steal your heart, take it for a romantic paddle up the river, cook it dinner on the fire under a starry sky and return it, smitten and exhilarated, and ready for the next adventure.”

About the host
Hosted by Jonathan Gersh

I have spent the last 10 years developing unique getaway properties in some special parts of the Western Cape. I love houses that are responsive and integrated with their surrounding nature. I am a co-founder of AFRICAN SPACES - a vacation property management company in Cape Town. "Work aside", I am dedicated father and passionate surfer.
Why they chose this property
If you are looking for an exclusive stay in a pristine, wild environment, with a range of activities on a beautiful river ... half way between Cape Town and the Garden Route (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay etc) ...... this is it. Escape from the high traffic tourism areas and get real value for money. To go where the locals go!
What makes this property unique
Built in 2014 with a blank canvass, every effort was made to integrate the surrounding nature with the property to provide an experience, aptly described as Rustic Lux (rustic luxury). A principle of privacy and togetherness inspired the design. Each bedroom is a separate stone cottage 30 feet from each other. Low stone wall walkways link all the buildings including the Kitchen, Dining and Entertainment; and the Bathhouse - a three sided structure and a transparent net to bring forest views. Hot water boilers are made daily by our staff without compromising guest privacy. There is a a fully stocked country kitchen with a traditional hearth for those that want a slow roast.
There are numerous places to escape the heat or find sunshine. The pleasure is in the simple things such as: open fires and The Braai (national pastime of South Africans); spending the day between a hammock and a plunge pool. Stand up paddle boarding, swimming, canoeing on a magnificent, unspoilt river. For the more ambitious, take a kayak to the river mouth where a 30 km wild, white sand beach becomes your base for a picnic. Travel back with the incoming tide.
For a change of pace and scenery, a 30 minute drive to drive to Stilbaai for supplies; and gin tasting at the uber successful Inverroche Distillery. World class surf in Stilbaai can be found. The Vermaaklikheid bakery for daily deliveries. The more you look the more you find.
