Family time

We had a great week at the cabin. Even with the weather only being so-so, we had plenty of options for activities inside. Hosts checked in to see if we had everything we needed, and we certainly did! It was fantastic!

A Great Cabin in the Woods

Our family had an amazing time. We got to celebrate a 60th birthday with family. Our week was filled with games, fishing, laughter around the fire and lots of food. We saw the prehistoric snapping turtle 😉, beaver, deer, a bear and even had a chipmunk family that hung around us by the fire. We loved every minute of our time together at this beautiful location. 💗

Wonderful Cabin on the most beautiful Lake!

Everything was wonderful! We had 6 adults and one baby. The cabin was spacious and cozy. The Lake was gorgeous! Fishing could have been better, but we caught enough for a meal! We would definitely stay here again!

Great Northwoods Experience

Beautiful, private location. House was clean and nicely stocked with towels, tp, paper towels, garbage bags, dishwasher/laundry detergent- it was nice to not have to bring everything for our stay! Comfortable beds and couches. Screened porch was a great escape from the skeeters! Owner was very nice and responsive before/during our stay. Shoreline is a bit more “natural” than swimming beach, so I can see how other reviews were disappointed. Our kids still enjoyed the kayaks and stand up boards! Same with internet speed, not what we’re used to but adjusted expectations for the northwoods and it’s good enough! Just not the same thing you’ll get in more developed areas, but part of the experience is to “disconnect”. Overall, a great week and we’d definitely rent here again!!

Beautiful home away from home!

Our family enjoyed our stay at Daniel's Retreat. We had plenty of space for our family of 5 to spread out. The kids loved having the wii and smart tvs for the rainy days. We found plenty of blankets, towels. And TP! The kitchen was supplied with cooking utensils but prepare to bring all seasonings, oils, basics for food prep. We planned on buying groceries once we arrived so we added it to our list. We rented a pontoon and it was great to have the new dock available. We all spent hours on the lake boating, fishing, kayaking, and swimming. We made great use of the provided kayaks. The owners were quick to respond with any questions we had. This was definitely an enjoyable vacation and we wouldn't hesitate to return!

No swimming from beach

Place is so so. We’ve found better for the price. There is NO swimming from the property itself. You would have to pay for a boat rental and boat to small swimming area. Hard to fish from pier-lots of weeds and lily pads. Home is smaller than it looks in pictures. WiFi is TERRIBLE. Only worked a little better if one device was connected at a time. Don’t plan to zoom or work from here. It would be nice to have more stuff for kids to do here, like a swing set or yard or beach toys or something.

Great for Families

We had a large group with 6 adults and 6 kids and we all fit comfortably with plenty of room for all! It worked great for our family and we enjoyed our stay very much. The screened porch was wonderful! The beachfront wasn't great for swimming for the littles, but we rented a pontoon and had a great time swimming on the sandbar in the lake every day instead!!!

AMAZING WEEKEND

The pictures do not do this place justice! I mean it was the most serene and beautiful weekend! There was plenty of room! One couple couldn't find a sitter so we said bring the kids. There was enough room for everyone! No one ever felt crowded in. We used the indoor and outdoor fireplace/ pit. We drank at the bar and swung on the hammocks! The scenery was nothing short of AWESOME! I only use that word when it comes to God's Beauty!! The screen in porch was one of my favorite parts. I rose up early every morning and had my coffee alone without fear of a bear eating me🤣. FYI we didn't see any bears. Mitch was really helpful and responsive. The place had EVERY utensil for cooking known to man. I actually have never seen a cutting board that big🤣🤣. The only downside is I didn't take Mitch's advice and rent a boat!! Next time we will. There will be a next time!

Beautiful Lake with Room for Whole Family

Our trip was a last minute booking, late in the season. Even though the weather was cool and rainy, we had a great family time in this property. The owner is very responsive and easy to communicate with. The kitchen is well stocked. The only negative I can think of is that the oven and refrigerator, porch and window sills could be cleaner. Overall a terrific rental experience.

Summer getaway

This place was perfect! We spent 4 days with our two families and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our kids (ages 11 and 12) loved swimming off the boat and dock. Yes, there are weeds but after some boat activity it was fine. It is the north woods after all! We enjoyed games on the porch, sitting by the bonfire and taking in the beautiful views, all day long.. Super laid back vibe, comfortable, the property owner and caretaker were helpful and always available, and we had a ball! Highly recommend to anyone.

We had lots of fun!

The cabin was spacious and clean and we had everything we needed. We rented the boats and used those several times, which added some fun to our stay and allowed us to see the beautiful lake. We had some loud storms at night, but the days always cleared up for more family fun. We would definitely consider going back to this rental.

Perfect during pandemic

Remote, wooded property. Perfect for family gathering during pandemic, no contact with others unless at your initiation. Accommodations are very comfortable. Screen porch was used constantly. Beware of mouse on screen porch at night : ) Online photos are outdated and inaccurate regarding furniture, decor, and shoreline. Property needs some upkeep, mostly outdoors. Basic supplies are very limited — renters should bring their own bath soap, dish soap, toilet paper (3 small rolls is insufficient for 10 people for 5 days), paper towels, and shampoo. There is also a significant undisclosed fee until booking due to septic maintenance. Although owner justifies this, it is not upfront in pricing. Lake is very nice for fishing, kayaking, and boating and sandbar is fun for families. No muskie catch but we did get crappies, bass, and northerns. Date of arrival - August 7, 2020 Review #56435754

A wonderful cabin for big groups

This is a stunningly beautiful cabin, big and able to support a lot of visitors (We're a family of four; we came with a family of seven in our social bubble). I can't say enough good things about the internal facilities. The pontoon you can rent is spacious and runs smoothly, but is tricky to start. One problem was a dead battery (not my fault) and one problem was me not understanding the choke (Totally my fault) but either way, being stranded or worrying about being stranded is super stressful. So make sure you /really/ understand all the systems and bring backups on board. On the bright side, Mitchell and his local assistant Amanda were wonderfully attentive to trying to help us get things running, and once they were running, I could take big groups of kids out fishing just as I had hoped. Cabins with good pontoon rentals are hard to find, and I loved having it in the second part of our vacation. There's a picture of a swimming beach in the listing. It's not accurate. That area of the shoreline is overgrown and possibly flooded? This isn't the owner's fault, but is something that you should know if swimming is important to you. Again: If you're looking for a cabin getaway for a big group of people, we highly recommend Big Siss. We had a good week here.

Best vrbo experience we have EVER had!

This was the best VRBO experience we have ever had. The cabin was spacious, comfortable, and nicely decorated. Beds were very comfortable...loved the master bedroom king bed. Carpet appeared to be fairly new. Furniture was in very nice condition; couches were especially comfortable. Lots of kitchen supplies available. Lots of space to sit for meals. Internet service was great. Mitchell (owner) was very nice and made us feel like guests, not just a business transaction. That really meant a lot. Amanda (neighbor and cleaning person, who also showed us the boat) was very kind and helpful, also tried to help with fishing advice. The pontoon boat ran very well. No problems there. Really enjoyed being in the boat at sunset especially. Our kids enjoyed playing bags and the other games provided. The fire pit, grill, fish-cleaning station, and hammock are all great to have available. We saw a bald eagle, cranes, muskrats, geese and goslings, mallard, loons, snake, and fox. And a huge snapping turtle came up right by the boat! Loved the gravel road with trees all over...it is very secluded...exactly what i wanted for our vacation. Beautiful lake. I got many beautiful sunset photos on the lake. I'll be making a YouTube review with our fishing and sunset photos soon. The ONLY negative thing about our stay is that we had mediocre luck fishing. There were other fishing boats, but it wasn't crowded by any means. Our family of 8 (we have 6 kids ages 11-17) spent 8-10 hours/day fishing! We did not catch much. Total in 2.5 days between all of us: 3 baby northern pikes and 1 medium size northern pike, a couple tiny sunfish, a couple bass and a couple crappies. For as much time we spent, I was hoping for better luck. But, that's the way it goes sometimes! Sissabagama Lake is popular for muskie fishing, but they are hard to catch, from what i hear. A local told us there are a lot of crappies (by that dock with white bueys) at the sand bar, said they bite on jigs with every cast. We caught all our northern pike at the end of the lake that was near our dock. We caught them with spoons and spinners. Amanda said her husband caught a really big muskie recently. So we know there ARE big fish in here, but they just didn't want to bite for us this week! We really enjoyed our stay, and wished we stayed longer. No hesitation in giving it a 5 star review. I highly recommend this VRBO home!

Dream Family Vacation!

We hosted our kids and grand-kids (6 adults, 4 children ages 6, 8, 8 and 11) at the Big Siss Retreat for a family vacation and could not have asked for more! We rented the pontoon and the kayaks and enjoyed visits to Stone Lake, Hayward and Spooner. We cooked or grilled most meals and the well-equipped kitchen had everything we needed. The kids loved the trundle bed in the downstairs living area for 'sleep overs' and the fire pit and backyard were well-used for games and smores over the fire. Mornings started with coffee on the screened porch which offered enough room for all of us to gather. And when we all needed down-time the big TV in the living room had NetFlix - much to the kids' delight! The laundry facilities were roomy and the washer and dryer appeared to be brand new front loaders - a life-saver for 10 people who all flew in so luggage space was at a premium. The house is very secluded and down a gravel road - watch for the gnome tree! - yet still close enough to town. Fishing was great for the kids' first time - we did catch and release on little sunnies as the kids were far more interested in quantity over quality and with just one person taking fish off the hook it was hard to keep up with four little anglers! Amanda recommended the bait shop just up the road - they put new line on our reels, gave great fishing tips and kept us supplied with worms. Speaking of Amanda - a great resource who lives nearby, has great local knowledge and was readily available for questions. Amanda also provided a map to the lake and noted where there are rocks and hazards - they are marked out on the lake but things shift and she knows where the shallows are, etc. - all good to know when you are piloting someone else's boat and motor! As mentioned above swimming at the sand bar was simply great. One could swim off the dock but there are weeds encroaching on the sand so if kids are not used to that feeling they will probably opt for the sand bar which is a nice putt-putt ride or kayak straight up the lake. Full sand and the kids loved snorkeling as there are little fish all around. Once we dropped anchor we could swim off one side and fish off the other as the dropoff into deeper water and weed for the fish is clear given the clean water. The sand bar is shallow and you could even allow a toddler to walk around with close supervision - the older kids just loved it. We hated to leave this secluded hide-away and hope we can make it back!
