About this property

Historic Dream Chateau with Pool on Massive Private Grounds with Stunning Views

**As seen in US 'Country French' magazine!
Sitting high atop a hill between the villages of Domme and Castelnaud, Chateau Peyruzel is a 13th century Medieval Castle and officially-listed Historical Monument. Carved from the ancient bedrock of the Middle Ages it loomed high as a lair and fortress to hiding princes and clashing armies. Now this magnificently-restored Chateau, with a listed history from 1281, is available for your vacation of a lifetime, as it stands on 10 hill-top acres, looking over the lower hamlet houses, and guarding over the valley below.

With stunning 320° views from every window of its four towers, and only minutes from other well-known Chateaux and the beautiful towns of Sarlat and La Roque-Gageac, this magnificently-maintained medieval gem is ideally positioned in the heart of the Dordogne's Perigord Noir to take advantage of all the area has to offer.

With massive stone walls and a magnificent spiral stone staircase, this Chateau tells of a time gone-by while offering all the luxurious touches of today. 14 ft high walnut ceilings and chestnut wood floors create massive spaces in 4 square towers that allow the sun to pour in from each of the huge windows all through the day, making it bright and luminous inside.

On the FIRST TWO FLOORS you’ll find the public rooms:
- a new, entirely modern, fully-equipped kitchen built in an style befitting the Chateau's history;
- the magnificent “Salle a Manger” (dining room) with huge open stone fireplace and a table that seats 12;
- the huge “Salon” (living room) with its stone fireplace and door to the terrace and medieval, walled garden;
- a Library complete with French & English satellite TV/DVD with full AppleTV library & free wi-fi;
- a cozy reception room, (with additional fridge, microwave and sink) for breakfast, lunch or a glass of wine before dinner.

The TOP TWO FLOORS contain the private rooms, and are home to five magnificent and large bedrooms (all with King or Queen beds) including one in the ancient “Salle d’Armes”, with its incredible four poster bed and medieval stone sink, facing a massive fireplace. Stunning views abound from the ceiling-high windows as you gaze through the massive walls to the valleys below - with incredible sunrises and sunsets.

The current owners purchased the Chateau in January 2008 and all the rooms and bathrooms have been carefully renovated and decorated to a style befitting their historical past: with antiques and fabrics to match. With luxurious beds and beautiful linens, nothing has been overlooked for your enjoyment and comfort.

Outdoors the many terraces and the massive walled, medieval garden sets you above the valley below, while providing wonderful areas to enjoy the tranquility and silence that the grassy park affords you. The beautiful pool (45ft by 18ft) and stone-floored pool house is a magnificent spot to spend sunny days and evenings by the barbecue, with wine glass in hand, watching the sun set.

This hilltop haven also includes your own private forest where you can wander and explore. Due to its incredible position, it sits above the fray of the life around it, seeming to be lost above the clouds. On the grounds you'll also find a caretaker's cottage (empty, not for rent) and a large double-storey barn. The barn functions as a wonderful event space where we stage weddings, anniversaries and special events. The large, beautiful stone barn easily seats 85 at tables as well as a dance floor.

The Chateau is absolutely ideal for 4 or 5 couples traveling together (where everyone has a large double room), or for a family get-together or special occasion. If you're considering an anniversary or a wedding, let us and know and we'd be happy to help you. The extent of the gardens and grounds with magnificent views of the valley as well as the Chateau, offer an ideal spot for incredible photos to commemorate your occasion. The chateau sleeps 12 in bedrooms. There are 4.5 bathrooms and 6 toilets.

Just down the road from magnificent sites and other famous chateaux like Chateau des Millandes, Chateau Beynac and Castelnaud, your own private castle is an ideal base for exploring the area. Find your way up to Domme, just minutes away, or to Sarlat to take part in their famous markets. The village of Daglan is minutes down the hill where you can find a daily supermarket, and wonderful restaurants where you can dine outdoors while looking up at the Chateau. Other restaurants and shopping opportunities abound nearby with all the richness of the area's famous pre-history as well. Take a drive up to the Lascaux caves, or visit nearby Cahors for wine-tasting.

Chateau du Peyruzel, listed in 1948 as a 'Monument Historique', still looks down on the hamlet of Le Peyruzel that served it during feudal times. Driving through the massive entry gates, you will find that your every comfort has been attended to as you begin living the life that has been within these stone walls for more than 750 years. Photos and mention of 'Chateau Peyruzel' can be found in guide books and on many other property sites of the area, but rather than staying nearby and looking UP at the Chateau, you now have an opportunity to stay IN the Chateau that everyone else has on their highest horizon.

WOW - a place to remember and for great memories to be made

We booked this beautiful chateau to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday with her children and grandchildren. The location was stunning, incredible views from the huge windows in every room and up the dramatic staircase. The chateau was as magical as any castle you could imagine. So carefully restored and maintained. Sweeping spiral steps up 4 floors with large rooms off, beautifully decorated bedrooms and bathrooms. The children adored exploring every space. Vast grounds with lots of different areas to explore. A formal lawn in a walled garden where we enjoyed cricket matches and frisbee, a wilderness where we explored the wildlife, barn where we spent wet weather moments playing table tennis, a veranda where we sat, drank bubbles, painted and played puzzles, a badminton lawn. A BBQ area where we cooked up feasts for our group, served on the wonderful long table undercover from the sun next to the clear blue pool. Gentle steps in and perfect for our children and older adults. Ample sun beds and chairs everywhere, a perfectly positioned hammock to enjoy the stunning view of the pool and chateau in the background. Janice arranged a private chef for one night and we had a superb meal in the comfort of the dining room. We also enjoyed local trips to Chateau Beynac and the candlelit evening at Les Jardins de Marqueyssac as well as the local market in Daglan. It was a privilege to have stayed here. Suburb setting and host.

A glorious place to stay

Chateau Le Peyruzel is a ravishing house in a fantastic part of France. The welcome and setup were first class, with a kitchen ready for a professional chef. The pool and pool house are beautiful and the property has fantastic views over the valley with a charming garden. The bedrooms are spacious and clean with large beds and cotton bedding. The bathrooms are also generous.

A welcome like no other

We have rented many beautiful properties before for the family but this time we felt like privileged guests. Janice made us so welcome on arrival snd showed interest in everything we were doing, booking canoe trips for us, sharing local knowledge of the best wines, best chateaux to visit, brocantes and food markets and even arranged a chef to cook for my husband’s 70th birthday. The chateau was fabulous but it was Janice who made our holiday such a success.

Magical Peyruzel

Le Peyruzel is really more a castle than a chateau. It sits high on a hill way above the surrounding territory and you can see it from miles away. It’s beautiful, exciting and a magical place to spend time. We were there for the month of July and loved every moment. Janice, the owner, was most attentive to our every need. She gave us excellent tips on what to visit and when. She truly became a friend and we shall miss her. Her sense of interior decoration is inspired and each room was a joy to experience. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen very well equipped .Each early morning, I sat at a desk writing while the sunlight poured in, swallows swarmed, doves cooed, and everyone else slept in. I loved that. Bicycling is a family sport for us, and the bicycling around the countryside was a daily activity for most of our family members. They loved it. The pool is beautiful and a welcome spot on hot July days. It’s a short car trip to either Daglan or Cenac for the morning croissants and the requisite daily baguettes. For a family adventure, Le Peyruzel is perfect. Our occasion was our 60th wedding anniversary and all our family joined us for the first two weeks followed by friends the last two weeks. Everyone loved the chateau and was thrilled to be there. The beautiful staircase was a bit of a challenge for my husband and me as we are in our 80s but it was a good challenge for us and well worth the effort.

Absolutely Fantastic!

A fairytale castle! Our stay at this chateau was remarkable and we will cherish our time there forever. Nothing has been overlooked, from the fabulous furnishings to the beautiful fabrics used throughout the chateau to make your stay memorable. We spent a great deal of time at the pool and enjoyed seeing the hot air balloons land nearby as we were having cocktails before dinner. The chateau is situated in a beautiful part of the Dordogne, above Daglan. Janice is the ultimate host and she truly went above and beyond to make our stay special. We really can't say enough great things. We will return!

An exceptional experience!

This was the perfect home and location for our two families: the surrounding area is gorgeous, with many beautiful walks/runs/bike trails originating from the property itself (even neighboring Daglan village was impossibly charming), and it is easy to get to any attractions or restaurants. The château is warm and welcoming and Janice has thought of every detail, from the choice of textiles/decoration to a solid Wifi connection...not to mention fridges galore and about the easiest gathering point, right next to the pool with a view of sunset. We had such an enjoyable stay, and Janice and Adam go above and beyond to make sure that you have all the information you need, plus excellent suggestions on how to make the most of your visit. We had an amazing time!

Amazing property, superb location

It really is not every holiday trip that you get to stay in such amazing accommodation. We all (Mixed family group with teenagers) loved every aspect of the Chateau. Our host Janice, although remote due to the virus, was very keen to ensure that everything was perfect for us and even gave us a great run down of the long history of the building. Her manager Adam was a great stand in and went the extra mile to make our stay as fabulous as possible. You must hire bikes, Janice will recommend the companies, and get them delivered. We went on several long rides with the most memorable being along the dedicated cycle paths along to Castlenaude where we swam in the river. A great holiday was had by all and we are planning a return, and hopefully longer visit, next year. All of the glowing reviews you will find here are accurate. It really is that good! Many thanks Janice and Adam! Leigh, Sue and family....

Dream chateau in heavenly village with best ever owner/manager

We are 2 families who have holidayed together for 13 years (our first in 2006 to Janice's first Dordogne property, Les Volets Bleus, in Tremolat). Even back then when Janice was relatively new to the holiday rental market, the quality of the accommodation was superb, so I knew that we would be in for a treat. This chateau stands in the small hamlet of Le Peyruzel on a hill overlooking the stunningly beautiful village of Daglan. The chateau is all that a guest would hope for in that it has the feel of an historic castle but with the home comforts that only the best beds, bed linen, furnishings and luxuries can bring. Outside, the pool is large and in sunshine all day but with a few trees for shade, the walled garden has badminton and boules and the huge 'party barn' has table tennis. On 2 or 3 of the evenings we also watched hot air balloons flying over the chateau which the children really enjoyed. My husband was brave enough to cycle the 2 miles down to the village (and back up...) for croissants on the first morning, and enjoyed it so much that he did it every day (Janice's bike), one day even cycling almost twice the distance into Cenac instead to try a different boulangerie! The village of Daglan is so incredibly pretty and well worth a visit. We walked down and enjoyed a lovely lunch there (with the children, ages 10 to 15) at Chez Fabrice, a charming Frenchman who used to be the chef at a gastropub in Oxfordshire, so speaks good English! The lunch was so good that the adults returned for a delicious dinner. Both are limited choice but delicious menus at very reasonable prices, and they even encouraged the children to be rather more adventurous than they otherwise may have been! Best of all about Chateau Peyruzel is its owner, Janice. She is truly exceptional and by far the best owner/manager that we have ever met on a French holiday. I would now consider her to be a friend and I suspect that many of her guests would say the same. She really does make sure that everything is just right, she has suggestions galore, organises everything for you if you prefer it that way, and best of all.....her cheese and wine tasting evening! This is a must! She arrived at 8 with I think 8 cheeses and 7 bottles of wine and left at well past midnight. What a fabulous evening! Thank you Janice! As I think that you can tell, we highly recommend Chateau Peyruzel!

Perfectly located chateau in the Dordogne

From first contact, the chateau’s owner set out to make us welcome and provide any information and support that was necessary. Everything was as advertised with very high quality linens and furnishings in every room. The swimming pool is perfectly sited and designed such that it stays very clean although a pool man also comes regularly to attend to it. It was very peaceful with absolutely no noise. As the chateau is on a hill and away from any still water there were no mosquitos (and no wasps) which was a real plus. We very much enjoy cooking, and the kitchen was well equipped and the dining room beautiful to eat in. There is sufficient flat land for those who wish to run. Apple TV was a real bonus but otherwise the family enjoyed table tennis and badminton on the lawn.

Magical Stay in the Dordogne

It is hard to put into words how wonderful our experience was. I'll start with Janice, the owner. She is not only an incredible host, but an incredible person. Generous beyond words. She has such a love of this part of the world and just wants to share it with her guests. Before we arrived, she sent a document with so many suggestions of what to see, where to eat, which tour companies to use. It was incredibly helpful in planning our trip. She arranged for her friend and neighbor to prepare a dinner for us upon our arrival--salads, pizzas, fruit, cheese, bread. It was perfect after a day of traveling. The chateau itself is like something out of a fairytale. It is impeccable. The ground floor and first floor are the common areas--kitchen (2 of them!), salon, dining room, media room. The top two floors are bedrooms. It was absolutely perfect for 2 families. There were two master bedrooms on the 2nd floor and 3 bedrooms for the kids on the 3rd floor. More than enough room for 10 of us! The staircase that runs up the center of the house is so beautiful. We ate most of our meals in the covered area by the pool. There is a fridge out there too. Lunch was always a big meal by the pool and it was perfect for the adults to be able to eat and socialize while the kids swam. Janice did a fabulous wine tasting out there for us one night. Her friend who is a chef prepared food for us and Janice picked out 10 local wines for us to drink. The kids swam and played ping pong while we had our tasting. The area surrounding the chateau is beautiful as well and it is a great location for exploring other areas as well. Daglan has a couple of incredible restaurants. And it is a very short drive to Beynac and Sarlat as well as many other towns. I am already thinking about when I can go back. Next time for longer than a week, because leaving was so hard. Magical, beautiful in every way. Merci, Janice!

Magical stay!

The Chateau was remodeled lovingly and everyone in our party of 9 had an amazing time exploring the French countryside. This week's stay was part of a 3 week itinerary and we all agreed that this was the best part. Vacations are meant to be enjoyed at leisure and that's exactly what this provided. What made our stay magical was because of all of Janice's thoughtful planning. From making dinner reservations at La Cantine to making canoe reservations and recommending towns to visit, Janice was so helpful in every way. What topped it all was our poolside wine tasting (hosted by the most knowledgeable Janice) and then a private chef's dinner in the beautiful dining room. When we booked the chef's dinner, we did not expect a 4 course sit-down dinner, complete with candle-light, flowers and many wines matched perfectly to the courses. It turns out that the chef is from South Africa, and she had served Nelson Mandela and other celebrities. Janice and the chef worked so hard to make sure that the dinner was perfect. Words of thanks just cannot express our gratitude. What an amazing treat it was! THANK YOU, Janice, for making our stay MAGICAL!

The CA Group

We had a great time in South Western France. Our accommodations at Chateau Peyruzel were without question the highlight of our trip. This Chateau built in the 1100's is one of the wonders of the medieval world. Overlooking the valley with spectacular views and 15 minutes from the Dordogne river where we took an excursion on one of the sight seeing boats, we highly recommend same. The Chateau is ideally located for day trips to the small towns and villages, maybe an hours drive, some even less. There is a market everyday in one of these towns. Janice has done a fabulous job of renovating and decorating the Chateau. The bedrooms all have ensuites and comfortable mattresses and made with fine linen sheets. Janice and her manager were so helpful and friendly, we felt like we had known them for years. She personally met us one day and took us on tours of two different wineries, a great day was had by all. Janice also arranged to have a welcome dinner for us the evening we arrived. Her friend and neighbor Sophia, prepared delicious salads and quiche with a beautiful cheese tray. Sophia bakes bread and sweets, her house is a 10 minute walk or 3 minute car ride from the chateau, open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, French bread just out of her ovens. Went well with our Bordeaux wine and French Brie! If you ever have the opportunity to visit that region of France you will enjoy staying at Chateau Peyruzel.

Chateau Peyruzel

The chateau was a delight. Although it was off the beaten track, Janice's book of suggestions for site and restaurants was a real help. The place was clean ,well maintained and very well equipped for our stay. It turned out to be close to a lot of great historical sites, wineries,and weekly markets that made for a great holliday.

Relais Château Comfort and Medieval Dreams

Relais Château Comfort, Medieval Dreams Having traveled extensively around the world and stayed at many beautiful places I can without reservation say that Chateaux Peyruzel was one of the most memorable places I have stayed at. The thick stone walls, leaded windows, high ceilings, and massive beams and working fireplaces (you could roast a cow in some) fire the imagination of anyone harboring medieval fantasies while the beautiful and tasteful decoration (the castle has been published in several design magazines) and up-to-date infrastructure (wifi, satellite tv, gorgeous kitchen, etc) make it supremely comfortable. If the castle were not part of VRBO it would be a member of the Relais Chateaux group. Indeed, Janice, the owner, could be a concierge at one. She was incredibly helpful in securing difficult reservations to must see attractions and restaurants, like the Lascaux caves and Michelin starred restaurants, took us on a personal wine tour, set up a wine tasting in St. Emilion that was the best in my life and brought us to a little out of the way village that time forgot up into the attic of a tea room that looked like Harry Potter movie set. The only problem with the Chateaux Peyruzel is that it is located in a beautiful area with lots of wonderful attractions like a working medieval castle (trebuchet launching anyone?), beautiful gardens, markets, great biking trails, canoing, gorgeous villages that “out-Cotswold” the Cotswolds and yet because Peyruzel is so beautiful , you don't want to leave. Oh yes, and one other problem, you might have to dodge the occasional hot air balloon (as my daughter did one morning) that soars dangerously close to your castle bringing tourists to enjoy for a few minutes, the view that you get to enjoy every minute you stay at the Chateau!

Magical Trip in the French Countryside

Our multigenerational family of 9 truly felt like royalty during our stay at the beautiful Chateau Peyruzel this past July. This magnificently restored medieval castle is the perfect blend of modern convenience, historical charm and luxury. The owner Janice made certain that our every need was met during our stay. In advance of our trip, she arranged for a local chef to provide a lovely catered meal upon our arrival, thoughtfully had our favorite vintages of wines stocked, provided suggested itineraries and even arranged to have a chef come to the Chateau for private cooking lessons. We asked for help with a poolside vow renewal ceremony on our last evening and she managed to have the Vice Mayor of a local village conduct the ceremony. No request was too large! All of this was done in a non-intrusive manner as she was available to us from a distance and only when we requested. The chateau has 5 fabulous bedrooms complete with beds that we felt compete with some of the finest hotels we have stayed in. Bathrooms are each individually designed with the beautiful, new fixtures and thick fluffy towels. Much to our surprise, we had mid week maid service! The tasteful, elegant interior design in each and every room has been completed as though you were in someones beautiful home (which you are!) The kitchen is nicely stocked with condiments and housewares. There are a number of living areas which we gathered in, including a library complete with a large TV and local tour books, large fireplaces everywhere and a dining room that easily accommodated our large group. Whether we needed a hair dryer, a potato peeler or an electrical converter.....Janice had it covered. There was even a fabulous laundry room! This luxurious medieval castle is set in the middle of 10 beautiful acres including a gorgeous pool, garden dining gazebo complete with grill and huge entertainment area overlooking a private forest! We enjoyed magnificent views from every nook and cranny of the estate. The chateau sits high above the village of Daglan where we discovered everything from a charming outdoor market to fresh croissants every morning. Many small and large villages are nearby. We took many easy day trips to visit Castles, the Famous Caves, Local wineries, many beautiful villages and even a Michelin rated restaurant...all with Janice's advice. Chateau Peyruzel is an AMAZING value. Our only regret is that we did not stay more than one week!

Historic Chateau with Pool

This is one of the most beautiful and elegant places to stay in the area. The Chateau sits atop a hill with breathtaking, peaceful views in every direction from the 4 story building on the 14 acres. The accommodations were comfortable, elegant and beautiful. The fabrics in the castle were superior. The bedrooms were large and bathrooms were modern. Our family consisted of grandparents, parents and three children aged 9-12. We enjoyed meeting for coffee and tea and pastries and toast every morning in the separate breakfast room where we would plan our day. We used the Library and Media rooms for reading and catching up with friends. We spent time sight-seeing most days and visiting towns nearby and enjoying their outdoor markets and dinners on the patios. We enjoyed some afternoons in the pool, wining, dinning, and relaxing. Our host, Janice, was most kind and generous with her time and knowledge of the area. She is so delightful and made our vacation much more memorable with her presence. She guided us in suggesting the best things to see and the best way to spend our days. It was hard to leave this part of France and the best host anywhere. Lucky is the guest that finds this knowledgeable woman in town during their visit.
