About this property

Private Lakefront Log Cabin

Cornerstone Cabin is an extraordinary cabin. We used three 100 year old square log cabins to build it. The old cabins were tagged, disassembled, moved to the lake, and reassembled into one house under current building codes, with all the modern comforts of home. The lake house sits on 11 secluded, forested acres with no other houses in sight. It has magnificent craftmanship, and all the wood was either from old dwellings or custom-milled for the house.

Cornerstone Cabin has a tin roof, making the rain's pitter-patter so soothing. Another unique feature is that it has a full 2nd story. Most cabins constructed with old square logs are 1.5 stories with a loft or knee walls upstairs. Cornerstone has lots of windows & 7 ceiling fans throughout the house so you can throw open the windows & enjoy the fresh air & wildlife sounds. For your sleeping comfort, there are hand-made wooden shutters throughout the house to darken the rooms.

Cornerstone's upstairs has 3 spacious sleeping quarters; the sleeping quarters are sequential, i.e. they open one to the other, no hallway. The first is a loft with queen bed and cathedral ceiling with exposed rafters. The middle bedroom has 2 twin beds; the upstairs bath is accessed through the middle bedroom, and it has a full tub with shower. The third bedroom has queen bed and cathedral ceiling. All three offer beautiful windows facing the lake.

Starting from the ground up, there is stacked-stone foundation, chimney, & fireplace; then 3' X 9' floor joists for the 1st floor (exceeds any building codes, so the house is solid as a rock). The downstairs has custom-milled beams & includes bedroom (king), bathroom with shower, stack washer/dryer, fully-equipped kitchen, indoor seating for 10 with dining room table (6) & game table(4), hi-speed internet, & family room with satellite color TV, oversized fireplace, & sturdy antique staircase built in 1820. Opening from both family room and downstairs bedroom is a 10' x 20' aromatic cedar screened porch with ceiling fans and dining table for 6. This is our favorite spot for morning coffee, evening cocktails, and dining.
Cornerstone Cabin is in a forested, slow-moving world of quiet solitude, wildlife, & no other houses, and yet, incredibly, you are only 10-to-15 minutes away from 3 grocery chains, good restaurants, & fun entertainment.

A few restaurants: 15 minutes to 2 established, locally owned & operated steak houses, Clarksville Station Steak House & Old Country Club Steak House; Italian: 15 minutes to Vesuvios Italian near Walmart or Vesuvios ll Food & Sports Bar downtown; need it quickly: 5 minutes to Mayo Marina (Country) Grill & Store for breakfast, burgers; great, hot or cold subs: 15 minutes to American Hero for philly cheese steak or gyro.

Some entertainment: Out your front door down a gentle slope to swim, sun, watch the sunset, & fish for bass & crappie off your dock in clean, clear, pristine Mayo Lake; bring your fishing/ski boat & moor it safely to our PBD (pontoon boat dock); ski, wakeboard, & tube in one of the most uncrowded lakes you've ever been to; or, rent a canoe or kayak from Mayo Park; 5 minutes to Mayo Park (walking trails; bands, movies, & plays at the Amphitheatre; free boat launch; playground); 15 minutes to Palace Pointe (all under one roof) Family Entertainment (20 bowling lanes, 7 billiards tables, video arcade, rollerskating, 8 movie theatres, & food diner); 30 minutes to South Boston Motor Speedway or to Virginia International Raceway (VIR = Lemans-type pro & amateur sports car & motorcycle road race course). For driving times to many other awesome activities, please see the 'Other Activities' Section under the 'Features & Amenties' Heading below.

Please feel free to contact us about any rental question or particular activities you're interested in. We'll do our best. 'We aim to please'!!

Sincerely,

Arch & Kathy

A beautiful place on the lake

What a beautiful log cabin! The lake views are amazing. The home was well stocked and communication with the owner was a breeze. My dog enjoyed walks along the lake shore and property. Very relaxing and would stay here again.

Fabulous Holiday stay

This place is absolutely wonderful. The house has everything you need and more. Spent a lot of time on screened in porch especially when the afternoon storms rolled in. Peaceful section of the lake. Plenty of space and the beds slept great. This is truly a log cabin built with love. Rooms were spacious. I cannot say enough about this place. Very private location but close to civilization for unexpected supplies and the owners were so accommodating. We are looking at dates for our next visit! This place is truly a keeper for us. Thank you for sharing your home with us!!!!

We stayed 10 days tjis visit and our nieces and nephews visited. It was a great to kayak with them and play board games on rainy days. Oh the sound of rain on a metal roof. The family loved it so much th

Upstairs

The first bedroom at the top of the stairs is really just a loft, and access to the 3 bedrooms upstairs is sequential - i.e., you have to walk through the first to get to the second and through both of them to get to the 3rd. The one bathroom upstairs is only accessible via the middle bedroom.

Another Perfect Stay

This is our 2nd year at this beautiful property and once again we had a fabulous time. The property is very secluded and private, perfect for a getaway with family. We spent most of the time relaxing on the screened porch overlooking the lake while watching the kids fish off the floating dock, wading in the water, and running around the massive back yard. The owners are absolutely fantastic. They are very accommodating and always quick to communicate! The internet connection was great and allowed us to stay in touch with work and family back home which was great considering the cell coverage in the area. Beautiful home with a great rustic history!

Fantastic property on the lake

The cabin is immaculate and located right on the lake for a relaxing stay. The cabin has both the charm of a cabin with modern amenities and has plenty of space for relaxation and gathering. Will definitely stay here again.

Quiet and cozy

We really loved the secluded feeling this home gave us all (even if my kids said we were definitely gonna get murdered lol) We all had enough space to be comfortable, but together. The variety of games was great and the fishing! Absolutely would stay there again!

Blissful and Fun Family Vacation

Dad wants to chill with no one next door blaring their music, plus kayak and float for hours in a tranquil setting. Teens and the college kid want to paddleboard, swim, play games, relax with a movie and lounge before bed in a really cool, loft-like oasis. Mom wants all of that and to wake up with a beautiful view of the lake plus a kitchen that has everything the family needs to prepare and enjoy fun meals together. We had it all and would come back in the future. Mayo Lake Park is just around the cove and it was easy to rent kayaks and paddleboards there. Kathy and Arch had floats, pool noodles, chairs by the water and an awesome dock with ladder. If you have a boat definitely bring it and launch from Mayo Park. This is one fine example of an artisan cabin featuring custom beams, rafters and notching details. It's fun to absorb the history, craftsmanship and textures around the cabin including the screened-in porch.

Could not love this place more than we do

We have stayed at this property several times, starting in 2014. The only problem is, after the first time, it became so popular we had trouble finding available space on the calendar! Absolute heaven for us, and for our Newfoundland dogs, who love to swim and go for walks on the trails. This year, we had our daughter's wedding at Mayo Park (just across the water, about 3 miles by car) and the staff over there couldn't have been nicer. Kathy and Arch are wonderful.

Gorgeous, cozy gem of a cabin

We booked this incredible cabin for a post-Christmas “unplugged” getaway for two adults, five kids ages 6-12, and our dog. Being inside the cabin felt like traveling back in time with the rustic decor and charming furnishings, but with all the modern conveniences to make our stay so comfortable. We couldn’t believe how well-stocked this home was - linens, towels, cookware, dishes, silverware, cleaning supplies, extra blankets; literally everything we needed we were able to find. It looked like the microwave was brand new. We brought our fishing rods, and our kids loved fishing off the dock and playing hide and seek in the woods around the house. We all loved grilling dinner and cozying up for family games and movies. We visited local attractions Palace Pointe for bowling and World of Sports for go-cart racing and laser tag. We hope we can return again in the summer; our kids are already asking when we can come back. Thank you for the most relaxing and lovely stay!

Just what the Doctor Ordered!

I doubt I can add much to the glowing remarks of this property. Truly all the comforts of home - with a much better view! We loved our time at the house, and would love to visit again when it's summer. My son caught some nice sized catfish in the lake, and we grilled them. YUM. So charming and peaceful.

This secluded log cabin did not disappoint

The cabin is accurately described, clean, and well-appointed. We chose this cabin for its proximity to VIR, which is just over 30 minutes away. Our hosts were very helpful and attentive before and during our stay. Nearby Roxboro town center provides a multitude of dining and shopping options. Overall a great value and a wonderful place to stay for a large group or family.

Unique and Beautiful

This property is even more amazing in person than in the pictures! Secluded with amazing views. The screened in porch with ceiling fans over looking the lake was the perfect spot to relax and spend quality family time. The owners go over and beyond on what is supplied in the cabin (spices, soap, laundry detergent…). Owners are very helpful and responsive! Cell coverage is spotty on the lake, but the high speed internet keeps everyone connected. Absolutely can’t wait to go back and stay longer than a long weekend,

Kathy & I are small business owners. We have worked together since our 1st child was born in 1986. I'm a 'think outside the box', special projects kinda person, & Kathy is a gifted manager. She is easy to talk to & enthusiastic. We would be nowhere without her. We struggled with this cabin's construction, our dream lake home. Piecing 3 old log cabins into one new house was so much more expensive than we'd ever imagined. Truly, we were sick towards its completion because we thought as soon as it was finished, we would have to sell it. A friend suggested we try to rent the cabin before making the selling decision. We were doubtful, but gave it a try. An aunt happen to tell us about vrbo, & it rented incredibly well. We knew then that this peaceful 'walk in the past' cabin was meant to be shared with others & here we are today. Please come unwind & recharge.

Why they chose this property

There's no other fresh water lake like Mayo Lake within the 3 states of lakes we've visited. Regulations say the shoreline must stay in its original, natural state. You can moor a boat to the shore, but no floating or permanent docks are allowed. This keeps development down because so many people desire a permanent dock. Mayo Lake's water is so clean, so clear. On a calm day, the emerald green water allows you to see 4' below the surface. Have you ever been to a very clean lake, but the water was still dark? I'm sure you have. Mayo Lake is not like that, unless it's an unusually busy, windy day.

What makes this property unique

Being busy people, when we pass by the last house on the right on Gabriel Jones Road & enter the 'tunnel created by trees', our unique benefit is we begin to relax & enjoy the quiet, un-busy forest. We've worked hard at our jobs, & it's now time to have some family fun. We wake up the next morning, see the beautiful old square logs & old timey chinking around us, & lay there trying to grasp 'could this be our place'. If possible, we open the windows, turn on the ceiling fans, & enjoy the fresh air & any forest activity. The kids get the boat ready. For our family wakeboarding, tubing, & skiing has become a way for our family to take our 'world switch' to the next level. We board, tube, ski, lounge, snack, & cheer each other on as we play. We watch Kathy ride behind the boat on her slalom ski & try to guess what song she's singing out loud like a little girl. We just have family fun. 'Eid dont git no bet-tah din dis'! Come on!!
