About this property

Private home on gorgeous natural land overlooking tidal creek

This property is located in East Franklin, on five acres of fields along the bank of tidal Hog Bay Creek. The area is rural, and the view from the deck down over the fields to the marsh is beautiful.

In the spring, alewives run up the creek and osprey, eagles, and herons are a common sight. The fields are home to numerous birds including bluebirds, woodpeckers, yellow bellied northern flickers, yellow finches, etc.

The house sleeps eight comfortably, with a fold-out couch on the first floor for overflow, and a fold out cot and a pack and play available. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a full bath. The first floor has a library with a queen bed, kitchen, dining/living room, and a full bath. There is a grill on the back deck.

This part of Maine has many opportunities for hiking, boating, and biking in Acadia National Park (45 minute drive), on the Rails-to-Trails multi-use path that runs from Ellsworth to the Canadian border, and in the over 14,000-acre Donnell Pond Public Lands area that borders East Franklin. The Schoodic Peninsula (30 minute drive) offers stunning vistas as well and is a must-visit.

Bar Harbor is full of shops and restaurants, while Ellsworth (20 minute drive) is the nearby shopping hub. Basic groceries and necessities are available at the Franklin Trading Post 2 miles from the property.

The coast east from here is quiet and far less congested than mid-coast Maine. Have a secluded home base from which to launch your Maine explorations, and/or to have some quiet time away from the hustle.

Great home base for Downeast Maine exploration

This house is full of art, pottery, weavings, and a beautiful quilt. There were seven of us, and it was very comfortable and roomy. Lovely property and access to a lot of inland hikes and lakes for kayaking. The kitchen is well stocked for an array of meals. We loved it!

It was a nice and quiet house, we really enjoyed our time there. We were able to see a handful of Eagles out back and a flock of turkeys in the side yard.

Artful, Peaceful Home

This home is full of art and artful touches. It was just the right size and very homey. We loved coming back to this sanctuary after busy days. The setting is glorious and we loved our morning walks and visits from the turkeys.

Another great stay at Hog Bay

This was our second stay at Hog Bay which speaks volumes! It's a great base for exploring Acadia and beyond. Even if the weather limits getting out and about the house is such a clean and comfortable place to rest and relax and you can still get to see plenty of birds and wildlife from the deck and windows. The hosts are lovely and incredibly responsive and helpful. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Wonderful retreat near Acadia

Beautifully situated property near a salt water marsh. Spacious and inviting. Easily fit a large family or close friends. The view in the mornings is breathtaking. Perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee on the porch. Close to Ellsworth and Acadia for water and hiking activities.

Family vacation

From the moment we arrived we felt at home in this beautiful house filled with pottery paintings and rugs. We had a great time exploring the area. We visited Ellsworth, Acadia, Winter Harbor and Bar Harbor. Laurel is a wonderful host. We were able to buy some beautiful pottery next door and that will be a lasting reminder of our fantastic time!

A wonderful stay at Hog Bay.

Had a wonderful stay at Hog Bay. The listing is very accurate and Laurel is a fabulous and very responsive host. The house is very clean, comfortable and well stocked along with many thoughtful touches. The location is similarly fabulous. It's peaceful with lovely water views and is great for bird watching. It's an easy drive and centrally located to Ellsworth, Schoodic and MDI.

It was the best week!

This is a simple but lovely home on a beautiful piece of property. The 45 min drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia was easy and included beautiful scenery and some great spots to get lobster which was less expensive than in Bar Harbor. We loved the pottery we purchased next door. The hosts were amazing. We had no hot water and they were over in just minutes to get us back up and running. We couldn't ask for better service and attention. The home has everything you need, a well stocked kitchen, plenty of towels and blankets. We did come during a heat wave so the house did get hot a couple of nights but we appreciated all the fans to keep us cool. Thank you for the stay, we all LOVED Maine!

Beautiful view of Hog Bay

We really enjoyed our stay at this property. There was enough room for all seven of us to spread out. The kitchen was well stocked- I was able to bake bread which the kids enjoyed. Plus, everyone enjoyed observing the various birds that came to the bay. It was about a 30-35 minute drive to Acadia National Park where we spent most of our time hiking and sight seeing. It was great to just come back "home" and relax after a day of adventure. Thank you so much for opening your home to us!

Amazing Family and Friends Summer Vacation!

Nice property as described. Plenty of space for 8 people, including a large dining table. The house is nicely stocked with basic necessities (some toiletries, any kitchenware you need and some pantry items). Quiet, beautiful area, but is almost an hour from Bar Harbor/Acadia. Be sure to bring bug spray as the area around the house has a lot of mosquitoes as well as places in the areas. There is no A/C, but nights get cool and each room has a fan, so sleeping was fairly comfortable. Internet was good and T-mobile had coverage on the vicinity of the house. Overall was a great place to stay and would recommend to anyone.

Delightful

This house is set in a charming setting. Wild turkeys, creeks and birds surround you. Every place you look there is something to see. The house is beautiful. The host has thought of every detail down to labeling the remote controls. Kitchen is well stocked with everything you could possibly need for vacation. The property manager is wonderful. We arrived in a tropical storm and she had everything ready that we needed. It is exceptionally clean, the cleaning crew does a great job! This ‘family’ home is so inviting! We felt right at home all week. Couldn’t ask for more

Summer Family Vacation

We were a family of four plus one more adult (sister/aunt). Everyone had their own room (4 bedrooms with one downstairs in a library which was fascinating in and of itself! As others have mentioned…very, very clean. The home is beautiful with pottery and paintings everywhere making it feel very comfortable. You are about 25 minutes from Bar Harbor and about the same to Acadia National Park…perhaps another 10 minutes. This home is more in the countryside than town, but it is a nice respite from town. It is quiet and beautiful…have a cup of coffee on the deck or at the long kitchen table with the back door open to only the screen door. Terrific breezes and mornings to enjoy! Did no cooking bc we often were out and about, but the kitchen had everything and more we needed, including a full sized cooler with wheels that we used for some picnics after hikes and such in the National park. Beds were very comfortable and Laurel is probably the most responsive host you could hope for! We received a very detailed list for check-in welcoming us and truly Laurel answered every question in a more than timely manner and even checked in with us after one of our adventures where we had asked for her help! How sweet and kind! If you stay here, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Beautiful rural setting

The property is on a tidal inlet where, from the back deck with our morning coffee, we saw herons, bald eagles, and Canada geese. Wild turkeys in family groups came to the yard as well as a doe and fawn. Raspberries on the yard bushes became ripe during our stay and my great nieces and I baked lots of muffins, raspberry crisps, clafoutis, shortcakes, etc in the well outfitted kitchen. Laurel was very welcoming and friendly and responded quickly to our one little wrangle with a smoke alarm. As I was in residence for a month, I enjoyed both the restfulness of the setting and the relatively easy access to both Acadia and activities in the opposite direction towards Ellsworth and beyond. The house was comfortable and attractive with paintings and pottery by family members. Hog Bay pottery was a stone's throw away! I highly recommend this house! It felt very Maine - like!

Spacious and clean in convenient location

The house is very well cleaned and decorated. 4 large size bedrooms and nice beds. Location is fairly close to Acadia - only 40 mins drive. It’s on a beautiful lot. The ceramic dish set is pretty. The only downgrade is that there is no dishwasher but it didn’t bother us. We liked the owner’s suggestions and prompt response to our questions. It was very nice stay for 8 of us

I have lived in Maine for over 14 years now, and my husband Jesse was born in and grew up in Franklin. Prior to marrying, I lived all over the United States, and can confidently say there is no place I'd rather be than Maine. We regularly enjoy all the state has to offer in terms of hiking, rock hopping, local craft and food offerings, kayaking, and birdwatching.

Why they chose this property

This property was the retirement home of Ralph and Louisa Grosjean, my husband's grandparents. We have extensive family memories in the house and area, and I am managing the house and property owned by my in-laws. We welcome you to visit and breathe the fresh air!
