Matinicus Island is a place where your credit cards do you no good, where the views are priceless, and where relaxing can't be helped. It is beautiful.
North Beach provides a wonderful sandy cove to gaze out to the ocean, or play, like we did, with our grandson, enthralled with this new environment.
West Point will take your breath away, giving you a sense of the scale you are surrounded by, and providing serenity that is its own therapy. A huge rock, used by sailors to navigate years ago, is perched on the granite shelves, a sentinel for todays traveler as well.
The Matinicus Trail shows off the forests, the glens, the flowers, the rocks, and the isolation of Matinicus Island. Eons of erosion have produced postcard perfect sculptures, the forest acting as a gate against the hard shoreline. I have never seen, or stepped on, a place more beautiful than where this trail enters the ocean.
Bald eagles fly overhead, teasing with their majesty. Iconic, they speak to the freedom you feel as you sit on South Beach, letting go of time, the pace of life simply the next wave washing on the sandy shoreline. Sand Dollars, beach glass, all sorts of treasures to travel with and take home, abound.
Take the shortcut to Eva's bakery, and be rewarded with, if you are lucky, hot sticky buns fresh out of the oven. Haven't ever had a bad thing from her. The variety of her baked goods will astound you, and once you learn how much she and her husband keep the island together, she will amaze you even more.
There is a place we are all looking for, away from the red lights, traffic, the boredom of everyday. The place we know exists, a place where we can fuel our souls, and stop: stop worrying about deadlines, stop worrying about digital chatter, a place to stop and breath.
There is a place where all of that and much more happens - that place is Matinicus Island.
John and Kim; thank you, again, for being gracious, accommodating, and willing to share this special place in your lives with our family. It is one of our special places on this planet. We couldn't have enjoyed our visit more!
Thank you.
With love,
