We arrived about an hour before our check in time of 4pm. As we were getting out of the cab a hard cold rain started. There wasn't anywhere to stand out of the rain so we attempted to step into the hall/foyer of the complex. The instructions from the owner would not open in my phone so I could access the codes for the doors. I messaged the owner & called VRBO they attempted to contact the owner. The response I received was wait until check in time. By the time we were able to step into the lobby we were soaking wet & very cold. The lobby smelled like a very old and well used litter box and so did the apartment. I am not talking about a little smell. I am talking the kind that made my nose run and my eyes burn. The HVAC system was turned completely off so added to the urine smell the apartment, especially the basement smelled musty. The actual apartment was clean. The upstairs bed sheets were grey, there was a plastic wrap around an old mattress and no mattress pad. The blanket/bedspread was stained. When we made the bed/futon/couch in the basement for the second person the smell was overwhelming. The couch was ripped, no mattress pad and no sheets that would fit. Blankets were dirty and one appeared to have a blood stain on it. If we could have left or received any type of refund we would have. After our interaction with the owner just trying to get in our of the rain, we knew that would be futile. We did use our own linens because it was that or sleep on the street.
I picked this place due to its location to the Freedom trail. Somewhere we could station ourselves to either walk or Uber to where we needed to go. Therefore I was not surprised with the type of street it was located on. However we would appreciate the bedroom to be darker. The blinds did not block out the street lamp outside.
