About this property

Family Cottage on the Licking River - Sleeps up to 10

This renovated 1940s cottage supports our ministry to create work programs for developmentally disabled adults. Located on a peaceful 27-acre property, you will be on a private road with a basketball court, playground and several open acres to play, walk and enjoy your stay. The kitchen has all accoutrement to cook family meals and the open living area has an Amazon Smart TV, simple DVD player, and laptop space.

We have a large family, so this cottage was designed with families and your relaxation in mind. Throughout the home, vinyl flooring was installed for easy clean up and soft landings for new walkers and toddlers, and quick clean up supplies are in easy reach.

You may also notice that there are no bunk beds for kids to fall from or fight over, limited knick-knacks in open view and a few coloring books, toys and various books for young readers. We purposefully have simple décor with open space to play, so there are small dressers for the kids in the closets along with hangers, table lights and night lights.

In the living room, there is a 39-inch Amazon TV to stream movies, as well as a DVD player. Inside the TV cabinet, there are cards, a few puzzles in different age ranges and abilities, family-friendly games, and limited DVDs. (The TV cabinet and mirror in the photos are tethered to the wall.)

The kitchen has basics for family cooking and eating, children's dishes (plastic bowls, plates and cups in 4 different colors), a small coffee area and basic cleaning supplies. We try to stock a few snack items in case you get in late or have a late morning and need snacks, but there is a Dollar General Market about 5 minutes away and Kroger delivers groceries if you want to plan ahead.

As shown in photos and layout, you will find the set up as follows:
Bedroom 1 - Queen bed across the hall from the bathroom.
Bedroom 2 - Higher bed with trundle underneath as well as a separate twin bed.
Bedroom 3 - Three (3) twin beds in a U shape with room for kids to play, if needed.
Utility Room - Off the kitchen is a very large utility room with a full-sized futon bed that can sleep two comfortably. Linens are provided.

Laurel Bend's main purpose is to create a safe and enjoyable, family-friendly venue for weddings, reunions and other retreats while providing work and job training for adults with developmental disabilities. Part of our program will involve animals, so as we progress, we will be adding more animals and offerings. We currently are breeding angora goats (we had four kids born 2023) and have ten Suri and Huacaya alpacas (Dark Chocolate with white on his nose has been with us the longest and is the friendliest) which are in the pastures across our private road from the cottage. Because goats and alpacas are not friendly to outside animals, we can’t accept family pets.

Wonderful home. We took our youth group to the Ark and Creation Museum. The Ark was tricky to get to (don’t take route 22) but otherwise a nice drive. Two rooms had 3 beds. Perfect for what we were looking for. The kids enjoyed the animals on the property

Kentucky spring break getaway

We had a wonderful time relaxing in the comforts of the small town and took some wonderful day trips to see surrounding area. It was great to have three separate rooms for all of us and a kitchen to cook in. We did some exploring on the property and tried fishing in river as well as got to enjoy the animals! Thank you for a wonderful time.

Perfect spot

We were in Falmouth for a funeral last week and we couldn’t have stayed in a better place. The farm was tranquil and they let our kids feed the animals. It made a sad week more manageable to be honest. They also had a basketball court and playground for the kids. I highly recommend this place.

5 night stay

We had a great time. The cottage was very hospitable and had everything we needed to feel right at home. The kids loved having the animals nearby and were very happy to have a playground and basketball court. If I ever come back anywhere near this area this will be the first place I look to stay.

I liked how it was surrounded with such beauty of nature and the farm animals. Loved that it had a playground, fire pits, and basketball court for my kids. It was well suited for our needs and during our stay. Provided a cozy atmosphere of relaxation and family time. It was near the attractions we wanted to see while visiting.

Amazing stay!

Summer was the best host. The home was perfect for our family (2 adults and 7 kids). We loved all of the little touches around the house to make it feel homey. It was well stocked with all of the essentials. Our kids loved being able to use the swing set and getting to meet the animals.

Staying at the cottage was lovely and peaceful surrounded by the alpacas, goats and chickens. The playground was enjoyed by our children and the rooms were comfortable. I loved the multiple twin beds as the kids struggle to share a double or queen, so there were many fewer arguments. The livingroom was spacious enough for all of us to lounge and the smart TV was enjoyable after a long day of walking. The kitchen was reasonbly stocked, but needed a few more cutlery. Also, a fly swatter would be handy. We loved the scriptural encouragment found around the cottage, and overall, had a lovely stay!

Clean, fun house nestled away.

Was a very nice clean house, kids loved the basketball court, and animals. The chickens just walk around freely they follow you around the little ones loved it. Its just 4 Minutes away from a very nice state park with a pool. We went to ark encounters, Creation museum and another day to an aquatic center. While falmouth is a tiny town its easy to maneuver around, but, not very much there. There is a laundry mat about 5 minutes away which was very convenient! We had a little trouble with the internet but the communication with the host was prompt and it was taken care of immediately! I'd recommend others to stay as it was a very nice experience!

Small Farm In A Small Town

The house itself was what we expected except the air conditioning is two window air conditioners. One in one of the small bedrooms and one in the living room. The other bedrooms do not get cold, just cool if you leave the doors open. Not a huge deal as it wasn't extremely hot during our stay. The check-in process was not very clear, you do use the side-door, not the front-door to enter/exit. The animals were cool to look at. They do have large groups that visit regularly, we had a group that showed up quite late on one of the evenings but were gone before we woke up. Our main issue with the rental was the owners, they leave in a building next to the house and they are around in the morning/evenings. Most of the times we talked with them it seemed like we were a nuisance to have renting. The husband came over to talk with us sternly that our kids were bothering one of their other long-term residents that was living in a tent on the property. They were just laughing and being kids around the vicinity and they got upset. We were never given any boundaries or instructions for the farm up until this point. After this happened - the owner were very cold to us. The house and property are a 4.5, but the interaction with the owners really put a damper on our trip.

Not Clean or Comfortable

Stayed with grandkids and husband. House looked clean upon arrival, however I quickly realized the floors were very dirty when the bottoms of my feet turned black, after walking barefoot on the LVP flooring. Kitchen sink leaking and water drips in a pan and has a layer of slime on it. Outdated food left in cabinets and fridge, and we even found several packages of medicine in a cabinet. Don't expect central air, two window units try their best to cool the house, but bedrooms end up hot while other rooms are freezing. I understand the company is trying to employee disabled people, however the owner or caretaker should follow up to make sure things are in order and clean. A sitter traveling with us was planning on staying in the cabin on the property and it had not been cleaned at all when we arrived. I don't expect perfection when I travel using VRBO's and I have stayed in many while riding our RZR in Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia, but I do expect them to be clean and comfortable.

Enjoyable stay surrounded by nature, farm animals, cute kitties and even get comfy beds!

The property itself is beautiful. The animals give a refreshing scenery out the kitchen window, and main area was comfortable and plentiful for our large family. Feeding the chickens scraps helped us feel at home, as fellow hobby farmers. We enjoyed having some availability of kitchen items to make home cooked meals, and comfortable seating and enough home space for everyone to have privacy. There were some pantry items and spices, etc available as well. The beds were very comfortable and linens were fresh and clean. There were a few areas of mild concern that we shared with the host and she offered solutions accordingly. The playground is nice but in rough shape (broken monkey bars, bugs) but the kiddos enjoyed it nonetheless. The large side yard was great for soccer games and getting the extra energy out. The host left suggestions for restaurants, a laundry mat and grocery. We enjoyed Howards for ice cream a few times in town and Two Rivers stone baked pizza DELICIOUS! I would caution you, that the site is a campground type facility. There were several groups on the property and the bunk houses/camping facilities are right in your side yard so you experience everyone's noise, activities, etc. We also weren't sure where to go to visit the grounds as there were several other groups attending the same week we attended. We wanted to have quiet walks, etc and that was challenging due to the others at the facility and how they were always gathered throughout the property.

About the host

Hosted by Summer Miller

Host profile image
We are the Miller family and we own and operate this property, Laurel Bend. Here, we have alpacas, angora goats, chickens and more running around. Laurel Bend is a former Christian campground which we purchased to provide work programs for disabled adults, like our vaccine injured daughter, Lauren. Please keep in mind that it's just us trying to find ways to make this ministry a reality, and we don't have large budgets or staff. We personally assist every guest and hope you'll let us know how we can help you.

Why they chose this property

Our daughters attended camp here, and it is a fixture in the community. We loved the property and wanted to bring new life to it!

What makes this property unique

Laurel Bend is located on the Licking River and has accommodations for groups up to 200+. We have 27 acres to roam, explore and play freely with a basketball court and playground.
