About this property

1890 Summer Cottage on an Ocean Bluff

This Maine summer cottage on Bailey Island sits on a high bluff overlooking the ocean. First bought by great, great grandparents on their honeymoon trip, it has been in the family for over 125 years. The bedrooms are beautiful, the dining room is large and sunny, and the view is spectacular! Enjoy sitting on the covered porch with a cup of coffee in the morning, watching the sun rise “out of the ocean”, lobster men hauling their traps and sailboats passing by. Settle in for a lazy afternoon with a good book or explore the island, collect shells on the beaches, rent a kayak and skim along the waves or go fishing. The college town of Brunswick, just a 25 minute drive away, is great for antiquing and to see summer stock theater. Visit the Maine Maritime Museum in nearby Bath, go outlet shopping in Freeport or travel just beyond to browse Portland's historic waterfront. Dine at the island's restaurants or cook lobster at home. Fun for couples and great for families!

Lovely setting and amazing views like a snapshot in time. True Victorian cottage of the 1890s. Great location. Highly recommend.

Charming summer cottage

This is a lovely old house in a beautiful spot. The home has been in the same family for over 100 years, and still used frequently and lovingly maintained. It is rustic, but comfortable and the kitchen is extremely well stocked. We were greeted personally by the family on our arrival and they were available for questions.

Memorable Family Vacation

What a great family experience. It exceeded our expectations. The pictures and descriptions are accurate and well representative of the property. The home is very well maintained and exceptionally clean. We were comfortable day and night. The yard is great for playing and set well back from the road so there was no need to hawk over the children. We loved the island and surrounding areas. It is a wonderful place to just "be". We read, did puzzles, played games, and climbed countless rocks. We recommend this home highly to family's. It easily accommodated our family of five and another.

Amazing, Charming, Preserved, Classic Beach House

We fell instantly in love with this house. From the moment we entered we were in awe of the well-preserved old-time feel of the place. And throughout the week we continued to find little details both in structure and decor that we found so interesting. The home is as it was, yet has the modern touches where needed for completely enjoyable stay. This is an old place, and yet it is kept up so well, it was super clean. There are so many cozy spots to relax, and the bedrooms were comfortable. The kitchen looks unassuming, but is completely stocked with everything you could need. The outside amenities were also incredible - the view, the porch, and the large lawn area (perfect for lawn games). The owners were also very communicative and helpful. We had a wonderful stay at the Ocean Bluff cottage, and would rent it again when we would like a quiet vacation. We tried too hard this time to keep the kids busy and felt we drove too much, so next time we bring kayaks...

Great ocean side cottage

Mainstay is a wonderful house. 4 Queen or king sized beds/bedrooms, plus 2 other rooms with 3 small beds. Just an incredible place to be, fantastic ocean views, almost constant cooling summer breeze, due to the combination of it's high location and being directly between Mackerel Cove and the ocean. 2nd year there and hope to repeat next year. This is the epitome of a Maine summer cottage on the ocean.

Joint NYer Family Vacation

We had a fabulous family vacation at the Mainstay! It is on a bluff so be mindful with young children. None the less our children had a fantastic experience. It was a magical vacation where children's imaginations were kicked into high gear as they explored the house, Bailey Island, and other local attractions. They keep asking when we are returning. Beautiful family memories were made. The house was well equipped for two families. The hospitality was amazing. Thank you for a lovely vacation.

stunning views and beautiful charm

stepping foot in this house is like stepping back in time. i just loved the history of it and all the pictures throughout the house that were taken a century ago. i absolutely loved sitting on the porch in the morning and watching the sunrise with my cup of tea. we stayed in the porch bed room and listening to the waves crash below as i fell asleep was just awesome. this house is not for those that want a luxurious stay, but it was rustic and comfortable and cozy and that's just what i wanted. great vacation house!

Marvelous Mainstay!

What a wonderous house-full of lovely quirks and corners! Our family enjoyed our stay and all agree that Mainstay was first rate. The site is a very realistic look at exactly what you are renting. The house is fully equipped, immaculate from top to bottom, there are stunning ocean views from every window, the sleeping porch was divine, the front porch was perfect for any weather be it rain or shine, and all of this within 10 minutes in flip-flops to fresh lobsters at Glen’s in Mackerel Cove. Thanks for the memories.

Wonderful Bailey Island

If this cottage is available, look no further. It was perfect in every way. The cottage is so charming and the location absolutely breathtaking. The inside is a perfect mix of warm “at home” charm with a very spacious and functional kitchen and bedrooms around every corner. There is also a gas fireplace for cooler nights. While we did a fair amount of sightseeing, we hated to leave the porch overlooking the ocean. The sunrises, the moonrises, the ocean views and the surf sounds were amazing. The cozy living room with large bay window seating nooks was also a bonus on the few rainy days. There are a great number of things to enjoy on Bailey Island and it’s an easy drive to Popham Beach, Reid State Park Beach, Portland, Freeport, Brunswick and Bath. It’s located in the middle of lobster fishery so I hope you love seafood. Just across the street is picturesque Mackerel Cove. We particularly appreciated the owner’s genuine efforts in assuring our stay was easy & pleasurable and enjoyed the opportunity to create our own family memories on Bailey Island.

Our favorite vacation spot ever!!!!

What an absolutely beautiful place for a vacation! The house was wonderful, equipped with everything we needed and the view from almost every window was spectacular. Our weather was perfect all seven days and we hated to leave! We certainly hope to make this our traditional vacation spot every year! Thank you for everything. Mary Andrea Abare
