Gem

Paul’s home away from home is truly a gem! The quieter side of the park is paradise. We enjoyed playing ball with our dog and evening fires in the spacious backyard. The sunsets are heavenly! I could go on and on………

Third year in this lovely house

We enjoy being on the “quiet side” of the island. But we still have easy access to hiking and biking. We love launching our kayaks from the back yard. And the view is fabulous. I’ll also add that the house is always spotless when we arrive.

Fabulous Hidden Gem

This property was located in picturesque Bass Harbor. Filled with beautiful antiques, it was perfect for our little family. This house was well appointed with everything we needed for our stay. I loved the fact that it was on the quiet side of the island during peak season, but still close to many activities to enjoy. We particularly enjoyed sea glass hunting, Beech Mountain hiking, swimming at Echo Lake, and hiking Wonderland and Ship Harbor (all 5-10 minutes from the property. Not to mention all of the other wonderful things to do closer to Bar Harbor. Can’t wait to visit again soon!

We had a fantastic time

We had a great time, Bass Harbor is located near South Harbor with good dining options. Nice views, close to everywhere, no more than 20-30min everything. I loved the house, well appointed, had everything we needed for a great week in Maine.

Awesome Visit

Our family of 4 and our dog had an awesome time at this lovely cottage on Bass Harbor. Beautiful location on the quiet side of the island. VERY well stocked with everything you need!!!!! The only thing missing is a fire pit out back to warm up on Maine's chilly nights.

Peaceful place

We were back this year. We love that the property is right on Bass Harbor. We sit and look at the water, enjoy the sunsets, look for birds. Also convenient to Acadia for hiking and biking. Close to Southwest Harbor. Went kayaking right off the property.

Great Spot

Beautiful setting, convenient to Acadia trail heads, kayaking, boating, ferries, restaurants, lobster. Very comfortable house with all the essentials. We ate a lot of our meals in, so, it was important to be able to cook. This small country kitchen was perfect and we even grilled lobsters two nights. Great hosts and pet friendly. I highly recommend.

The Perfect Trip

We had a wonderful stay and after seeing the crowds in Bar Harbor we were glad to be staying on the “quiet side.” We spent our days enjoying all that Acadia has to offer and our evenings enjoying the house and everything IT has to offer. The harbor view is spectacular and instantly relaxing. Spectacular sunsets were followed by crystal clear night skies. We were lucky enough to be there during a meteor shower. The house was lovely and as advertised. We hope to be back.

ATTENTION MDI LOVERS!

If you love Mount Desert Island, this is the place to go! The location is great, on the quiet side, easy drive to anyplace you want to be, and walking distance to a well-stocked store and great little seafood/ice cream shacks. The cottage is more lovely than the pictures show. It has a well-oufitted kitchen (we love to cook in), lovely deck and yard, and the interior is really clean and comfortable. The host was prompt to reply and very pleasant. This place is a keeper for our list.

Bass Harbor Splendor

The property was as listed. Beautiful sunsets, first morning greeted by a pair of bald eagles. House and furnishings were very homey. Kitchen was well stocked with good quality pans, dishes and glassware. Paul was very responsive, concerned when we lost power due to tropical storm. Despite being on a busy road felt very private and remote.

An excellent place in a great location!

This was an amazing place to complete our month long trip to Maine! This home was spacious, clean, well stocked and in a great location. We were less than 10 minutes from Southwest Harbor, which is a great little town. It was easy to get around from here and lots of great hiking, eating, and exploring within minutes from the door. The house is on a fairly busy road, but that was never an issue and we were able to play with our dog off leash in the back yard, which leads down to the waterside. The upstairs shower is short, but wasn’t a problem for my wife, I showered downstairs and didn’t find it too dark, nor too small for a stall type shower. Paul, the owner was awesome! He originally agreed for us to check in early, but when a wind storm knocked down limbs in the front yard, knocking out electricity, he notified us immediately, allowing us to sightsee on our way south from Lubec. Paul’s communication was timely and helpful. Thank you, Paul! We would definitely stay here again if we make it back to that part of the world! I highly recommend this VRBO!

Family Getaway

What a beautiful place to spend a week in the summer! My partner and I brought our two young children and our dog along for the vacation and we had more than enough space in the house and the sunsets could not have been more beautiful. We loved playing by the water with the little ones and enjoying a glass of wine on the deck after putting them down for bed. Bass Harbor / Southwest Harbor is a great place to stay for families looking for a little less hustle and bustle than Bar Harbor. The drive to Acadia is relatively short and we made the 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor twice as well. Couldn't recommend this play more and definitely will be visiting again with the family!

Happy Maine Getaway

We had a wonderful vacation to Maine the third week in September. Our arrival had a bit of drama due to Hurricane Lee approaching the Island. It was down graded to a tropical storm but unfortunately made landfall on the day of our arrival. Our daughters flight was delayed by a day. You can’t do anything about the weather! The good news is the weather was fabulous for the rest of our trip. Communication with our host was great. We loved the house. It has everything you need. I was sold when I walked into the kitchen and found a clean, new sponge by the sink! So many rentals leave dirty old sponges! We loved the quiet location and view by the harbor is lovely. It is a bit of a drive to the more popular attractions and hikes but we had our car and we’re prepared for that. I would highly recommend this rental.

As Maine as it gets!

This was our fifth visit to Blackacre, and it was especially welcome after not being able to visit Maine for the last 6 years. Suffice to say, once we first visited this quintessential Maine cottage, we didn't want to stay anywhere else. As others have said, the photos do not do this house justice. It is right on the water. There are gorgeous harbor views from the deck (and most of the house) and the sunsets do not disappoint! The house is roomy, comfortable, and homey -- and incredibly clean. The recent addition of fans and AC units is most welcome. We love staying on the "quiet side" of the island -- there are plenty of nearby trailheads; it's a short drive to Southwest Harbor, and it's not that far from Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, and everything else MDI has to offer. This house is walking/biking distance from the Seafood Ketch restaurant (dog-friendly deck), the Bass Harbor Nature Cruise (highly recommended), the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, the Swans Island Ferry, ice cream, and a mini mart with a surprisingly good selection of grocery items. You're down the road from the highly accessible (and beautiful) Wonderland and Ship Harbor trails and the Seawall, which we found to be great for quick dog walks at the beginning or end of the day. If you're visiting Maine and looking for the real-deal experience, this house is it!

Beautiful Sunsets

This place has beautiful back yard sunsets. You can walk in the harbor & look for sea glass and shells. We didn’t utilize the back yard as much as we had hoped to due to all the mosquitoes. The actual house felt more like a rustic cabin or grandma’s older house. The house has some cool antique furniture & old charm. However, the kitchen is not practical for a family to cook dinner in. It’s fine for breakfast, but there is no island or counter space for making dinner, which unfortunately resulted in us needing to eat out with littler kids. Lastly, the master queen bed needs replaced. It’s extremely uncomfortable and disappointing. The kid twin mattresses seem newer and more firm. The sunsets are unbeatable tho.

Great home base for exploring Mt Desert Island

The house was very clean inside and out. It has a huge yard that would be great for kids to play in. We didn’t have an issue with mosquitoes as other reviewers noted. You can’t really get in the water as it’s located high into Bass Harbor and therefore low tide leaves it very muddy not sandy or rocky. The house is very roomy and a little quirky in a charming way. It’s located on a little lane with one other house which is barely visible. There is one other house next to it (the pier shown in the pictures belongs to the house next door). The deck of the neighboring house is visible to the Black Acre deck. There is quite a bit of road noise but it quiets down at night. While there, we hiked at near trails, ate at several restaurants (Thortons was our favorite), steamed lobsters in house (found a guy that sold them for $7 lb), drove up Cadillac mountain and rented kayaks on Long pond. The weather was fair but we made the best of it. Overall good vacation!

Charming, clean and ocean view

The pictures in the listing do not do this cute little house justice. It is an old, charming home in excellent condition. It’s filled with useful and thoughtful antiques. An old weathervane pointing out the directions, a roll top desk to sit at and do work, antique book cabinets filled to the brim with interesting titles, beautiful wooden chairs to sit in… it’s a special little place. For our family of 4, it was the perfect size. My teen children opted to not share the second bedroom and my son slept in the TV room that had a couch that opened to a bed. The French doors even thoughtfully had blinds that could be rolled down for privacy. We also really enjoyed the beautiful night sky as we lay on the recliners on the deck. And there was a telescope and binoculars to use too. The owners really thought of everything. The only downside of the home was the shower situation. The upstairs shower has the angle of the roof in it and cannot be used by anyone tall. There is a stall shower in the downstairs bathroom but it’s small and dark. That was my only complaint. But I’ll deal with it for the rest of the house!

Wonderful vacation spot!

We just returned from spending a week at this lovely home. It was our first time to Acadia and we absolutely loved it! We have 3 children, ages 12, 10 and 6. It was a perfect vacation spot as we could hike and bike as little or as much as we wanted. There were plenty of "easy" spots we could tackle as we had our 6 year old to consider. The home is equipped with anything we needed and so clean! We loved relaxing at the home when we weren't out hiking, biking or shopping. We actually enjoyed a day of rain we had so we could do a 1000 piece puzzle provided at the house. The house lends itself to relaxing. One of my favorite moments was sitting down by the water reading a book while the children collected sea shells and played soccer in the yard. The owner is very responsive and easy to work with. He even provided a list of recommended places to eat, shop and hike. Everything we tried from the list was top notch and the recommendations were appreciated! The only bad thing about our stay was the mosquitoes. They were very bad after dusk. I called it the Mosquito Apocalypse!! Make sure to take long pants/shirts and spray. I would recommend visiting this area and staying in this home in particular. We had such a wonderful family vacation and made memories we will treasure forever!!

Quiet, relaxing home for unwinding after long days of hiking in the Park

It really felt like "home away from home" -- the house was just right for cooking breakfast and preparing lunches for hikes, and then just relaxing after dinners out in Southwest Harbor, just 10 minutes away. That is, when we weren't keeping up with work, which was easy to do as the home had ample space for both of us to set up our laptops and each have our own little work stations. There is a separate TV room with high-def TV, which I really appreciated so that I could keep up with the Sox each night and not disturb my husband while he tinkered on the computer in the main living/dining room area. There is plenty of seating for 4 people to watch the game in the TV room, and for as many as 6 to sit comfortably and read in the living room. The master bedroom has ample space as well. All of the appliances are in good working order and everything was very clean. I had originally given the place 4 stars because the upstairs shower is a bit too short for a man over 6 feet tall, but fortunately there is a downstairs shower stall, which my husband used instead and didn't seem to mind. Since many of these homes only have one shower, it's not really a complaint. And the kitchen is divided between two small rooms, which is a little wonky, but we managed just fine. I decided on 5 stars when I remembered the stunning sunsets we were treated to off the spacious back deck -- the shower and kitchen were a small price to pay for those sunsets! The owner was very easy to deal with -- responded immediately to my original inquiry and the few additional questions I had. Thank you -- we will definitely book Black Acre again!

Beautiful, clean, “quietside” home

We loved our time at this home. It was immaculately clean, with more space than we anticipated from photos. The real showstopper is the view from most rooms of the house and the large deck. Despite a somewhat quirky layout of the kitchen, we had no issues making nightly meals. We enjoyed being on the quiet side of MDI, but ease of getting to most everything we wanted to do. Would recommend to friends and return ourselves.

Immaculately clean, picturesque setting, great location on the quietside.

Spent a lovely week enjoying sunsets on the deck, boiling lobster, relaxing, and kayaking in Bass Harbor (you can't beat the easy launch site!) The house was exceptionally clean and more spacious than we expected. We converted the downstairs sitting room to a bedroom (couch folds down) for my father in law and the living room was still plenty spacious for our group of four adults to relax. Location is great, five minute drive from Southwest Harbor and some easy walks on the ocean. Bit further from Acadia and Bar Harbor hubbub which meant less traffic and quieter evenings. Would definitely stay at Paul's again!
