About this property

The Litz Mansion Room #1 - The Litz Suite

This beautiful historic mansion was constructed in 1859 by John Warfield Johnston, a Virginia Senator, and Judge of Tazewell County. The home is situated on a 3.16-acre lot and is conveniently located within walking distance of the Tazewell Main Street area. The Johnston family was very well known in Virginia for their achievements and built the home to display these accomplishments.

John, his wife Nicketti and son George lived in the home until it was purchased by John C. Hopkins and wife Elizabeth during the Civil War. Following the war, Colonel Andrew Jackson May (“Jack”) purchased the home. Jack May was thought of as one of Tazewell County’s best known military heroes who played a significant role in the Civil War and helped retain control of the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad. May lived in the mansion with first wife Matilda May, who sadly passed away. Jack remarried Nelle Bly and had a son Colonel May. Nelle remained in the home and turned it into a school for a couple of years before it was sold to the longest owners on record, A.Z. Litz and wife Etta V. Stauber.

While the mansion has changed ownership over the years, John Warfield Johnston’s home of grandeur remains the same over 160 years later!

The Litz Mansion Room #1 - The Litz Suite

The Litz Suite pays homage to A.Z. Litz, in which the mansion as we know it today is named. The cozy bedroom features a queen-sized bed, fireplace, and most importantly a private on suite. The on suite is the main attraction here. Newly renovated with beautiful white tile, large glass shower, sunflower shower head and travertine corner seat, make this room a guest favorite. Located downstairs with easy access to the kitchen, dining room, living room and game room. Perfect for couples or guests that enjoy a little more privacy.

We checked in late and left early the next day. Everything went smoothly. Really neat place to stay, if you’re in the area.

Ancestry sleuthing trip to Tazewell

My mother and I wanted to visit the town where she was born and look for some clues to fill in the gaps in her family tree recording. This location was perfect, conveniently a block or so off of the main street but the trees and landscaping made it feel remote and secluded. The unique experience of staying in a historic home whose architecture has been honored yet updated for some modern convenience was fantastic. The communication with the host was prompt and friendly. We would select this location again!

Anniversary Motorcycle trip

Perfect location for riding the Back of the Dragon road. We were the only guests for our two nights. Stayed in room #1 with on suite. Bed was very firm, fine for my husband not so much for me. Only used the kitchen for coffee & cold drink storage in fridge. Was very sparsely stocked so keep in mind if planning to cook. Roku tvs in common areas. One suggestion - add the YouTube TV app. Plenty of outdoor seating available on both front porches. Quiet neighborhood

This is a beautiful mansion with a great front porch and game room to enjoy. Door keys are all electronic making it easy to check-in at any time. The only disappointment was no breakfast was served in the morning.

What a beautiful property! We wanted a quick, quiet getaway and this was the perfect spot! The porches offered rockers and swings in which to relax and take in the view. The bedroom and common rooms were very comfortable. We had one issue with our code and it was resolved very quickly. Hopefully, we’ll be back!
