Aerie is a beautiful home! The listing was absolutely accurate and it was even more breathtaking in person. The location is perfect for a get away - you can stay at Aerie and relax with the superb view from the deck, or within a few minutes be exploring the Maine coast, antique shops, or Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The house is well stocked with not only basics, but many extras including kitchen gadgets, pillows, reading material and sea treasures found on the beach below. The owner was very responsive to our questions and made our transactions easy. I'd recommend Aerie to any group looking for a getaway. My hope is that I'll be able to go back!

This property is our family’s happy place to go!

This trip marks our third time staying at Betsy’s property. Each time we relax even more & make fabulous memories together. Betsy as a hostess is simply delightful. You feel as though she is a friend. She is an excellent and very detailed communicator. She has great suggestions by email for things to do. The house feels so comfortable….like a true home. The view up the Skillings River is beyond beautiful. Truly one of a kind. You can enjoy it from the porch, screened porch, or upper deck….take your pick! We enjoy eatting outside on her large tables to enjoy sunset! Her kitchen is better equipped than ours at home!! So much fun to cook in her kitchen! Local seafood is amazing too! We love hiking Acadia, the Schoodic Pennisula, and surrounding areas. Ellsworth is close by for provisioning easily. This area is so calming. The home is so peaceful and beautifully decorated. Betsy has our same taste in books (with plenty to read while there). She also has lots of games and a game table upstairs to play around. Every room in the house has a unique beautiful view to enjoy. You have access to a beautiful private rocky beach at low tide. You might even find some beach glass, we always do! It does have a steep ladder down to it, but well worth it. All the furniture is comfy and placed to enjoy the views. I reiterate that this home truly is our family’s happy place to go! A true delight, beyond 5 stars in every way!

A quiet, beautiful sanctuary

We stayed for a week at the end of May. We're a family of five adults. The house is well-proportioned, perfect for spreading out and relaxing. The view is the highlight and can't be beat. We felt truly away from it all. The house has just about everything you need. We enjoyed having coffee with the view each morning and watching the sunset from the deck. It was a lovely experience and hope to return again.

Exceeded Very High Expectations

The setting, the house, the host, the area...all are perfection. Betsy could not have been a better host. From our first contact, when planning our trip, to her countless suggestions re activities, restaurants, shops...Betsy was a delight. The house has a spectacular deck, lovely views from every room, and the kitchen is stocked with everything you could need to cook and serve your crew. This was an outstanding vacation destination/base that we definitely plan to visit again....and soon!

Very good house , but NO PRIVACY

Pros: House has everything you need , Great View , friendly owner, good location. Cons: NO PRIVACY you have to share house with the owner , they're living downstairs at the same property. They should disclosed it , in description of the property. If I knew in advance that i have to share property with the owner i would't booked.

Excellent house and wonderful owner

This house was wonderful. The views from every room were fantastic! We loved watching the lobster boats in the bay checking traps and watching the local Osprey. The house was very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed relaxing by the large windows. The owner was very helpful and responsive. We would definitely stay here again!!

A slice of heaven!

Betsy's home is so beautiful and well equipped for the perfect stay. We felt so comfortable there between sunset dinners and sunrise breakfasts on the deck, fires on cool evenings, walks along the rocky beach, the sound of the young osprey everyday, great time with friends all in a beautifully design home with fantastic views of Mt. Desert Island. Betsy is the best host, always there to answer your questions and making your stay "A slice of Heaven"

Great quiet place to relax and enjoy the outdoors!

Beautiful home, beautiful location and beautiful views. Owners communication was excellent and very friendly. We’d definitely stay here again. Close enough to see most parts of Maine from Cadillac Island to Portland to the Highlands. Beautiful bay views and watched the crab and lobster fisherman check their traps right from the deck.

Best place to stay for relaxing with beautiful views!

This is our second stay in this amazing home! We have experienced how comfy and romantic it is to stay here as just a couple. Now we have experienced how well equipped it is to stay with our family too. Betsy guides you through wonderful things to do like a local on days you are not hiking in Acadia. You are only forty minutes away from MDI and the Schoodic Side of Acadia both. The view from all the bedrooms and decks rivals any that you can hike to so it is hard to even want to leave the house. The kitchen is very well equipped. Betsy grows fresh herbs on the deck that go great with any local seafood market’s catch of the day. She has a steep but very safe ladder down to her own rocky beach at low tide that we went down to daily. The house has lovely and comfortable furnishings. You choose your own nook to curl up in for a great view or to read a book. Betsy has great books, board games, puzzles, DVDs (although with so much to do and enjoy we never turned on a TV). Lots of great comfortable outdoor furniture for eatting out on the deck or on the screened in porch too. The gas grill was great for grilling fresh Mahi Mahi and Halibut. The house itself is charming, tucked in down a little dirt road. A very quiet spot to truly get a break from daily grind! Which she has a great coffee grinder coffee pot that makes excellent coffee! A definite necessity!! Communications with Betsy both trips has been easy and frequent. She is a wonderful hostess who welcomes you into a true home. I recommend it as long as you don’t want the weeks we do! Ha! We definitely want to stay again!! Thank you for another memorable vacation!

Absolutely idyllic Maine home!

We were searching and searching for a Maine home that had an amazing view, space to play outside, and reasonably close to Acadia. Betsy’s home was all of that, and more! The pictures absolutely do not do it justice. We stayed in the home for almost two weeks, and never tired of just sitting and admiring the beauty right outside our window. The home has everything you might need, and was very comfortable and welcoming. The beach down the steps provided hours and hours of entertainment, and we made memories at this property that will last a lifetime. We could not have been happier with our choice of vacation homes. Thank you Betsy for a wonderful stay!

What a gem!

The perfect location for a Maine visit!!! Close enough to hike Acadia National Park, but quiet and peaceful at the end of the day. We watched bald eagles and osprey fly over the deck daily, woke to the sound of lobster boats and loons, cooked dinner in the perfectly appointed kitchen, lounged on the deck, screened porch and roof deck. This is the perfect house for an active but relaxing vacation. The house is exceptionally furnished, with plenty of space for multi- generations to stretch out. A well equipped kitchen with many staples provided, pots of fresh herbs adorn the deck. We grilled dinner on the deck one night, cooked wonderful local lobster and crab meat another night, and enjoyed several fun local restaurants also. There are so many other wonderful hikes, bike paths, and picturesque villages scattered up the coast that 'Aerie' is the perfect location! A quick drive to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, but close to Schoodic Point and Down East Maine, you can really get to know the area from this beautiful spot. The rugged, rocky, beaches are beautiful! Betsy was very helpful planning day trips and activities for our family, suggesting everything from hikes and kayak trips to art galleries and shopping. It was wonderful to have advice on restaurants and local lobster pounds, where to rent bikes, the best place to park for a walk to a great beach... A binder at the house has invaluable information about the house, area, and local summer community and Betsy was available by phone for other questions. We are already planning our return trip!

Great place to relax and enjoy family

We had a delightful stay in early August. For those looking to enjoy being together with family/friends in a spacious home with an unbeatable view, this is the place! The pictures only give a hint of how comfortable this home is. The owner, Betsy, is very diligent with ministrations to ensure the success of your stay - there is a giant 3-ring binder guide she has pulled together with local insights to the best restaurants, hikes, grocery stores, etc. We enjoyed multiple deer, rabbit, bald eagle, osprey and hawk sightings during our stay. The home is quiet and secluded from its neighbors for a real "retreat" feel. All this within an easy ~30 minute drive to the bustle of Bar Harbor and the natural wonders of Acadia National Park.

Beautiful views and amazing location!

We had the most spectacular time at the house and loved our adventures in the surrounding area! The house was beautiful, comfortable, peaceful, and had everything we could possibly need (and more). I especially loved spending time on the deck and the screened in porch watching sunrises and sunsets. During our time in Hancock, we went up to explore the rocky beaches in Corea and spent two days in Acadia. It was a quick trip from the house to both of those as well as many other fun spots. While we had fun adventuring in the area, it was so lovely to be able to relax at the house. Overall we had a terrific time and can’t wait to go back!

Beautiful Maine home with breathtaking views

How about something like this..... We loved our vacation at this classic Maine home nestled amongst the tree tops overlooking Mt Desert and the Mt Desert Narrows. Clean, in excellent condition and well appointed, this open, airy, sun filled home has a magnificent view from every room! We never wanted to leave the huge deck where we read, ate meals, relaxed, watched the eagles soar and enjoyed sunsets over the bay. Truly spectacular! Our kids loved hiking in the nearby woods, collecting seaglass and stones on the shoreline and visiting Acadia National Park which is just a short drive away. And the home owner was a delight to work with. She made sure we had everything we needed to make this was a vacation we wouldn't soon forget. Five stars!!!

Better and better

This was our second visit. We so enjoyed our first visit that we were curious if the second time could match up. It was even better. All of the accolades mentioned by other reviewers are true, beautiful house, very well (and interestingly) appointed, outstanding views from deck, private and quiet (except for occasional lobster fishing boats), and a very helpful owner. We love the fireplace with its aged dry wood stacked conveniently on the front porch. Can't beat sitting on the comfortable chairs next to a roaring fire enjoying your morning coffee and looking out the large windows toward Frenchman's Bay. While Bar Harbor and Mt. Dessert are fine for a quick visit, we especially enjoy exploring the parks and trails around Hancock. Before we had finished our visit we had already asked Betsy to reserve our return visit next year. While both trips have been just my wife and I, the upstairs, complete with its own lounging areas and separate deck would marvelously accommodate several friends who could, at their leisure, enjoy private time.

Pleased Pennsylvanians

June 14-21, 2014 I came to Maine with my husband, mother and daughter to celebrate my mom's 80th birthday along with my daughter's graduate degree in math education. We loved the layout of Aerie and appreciated the thought Betsy put into making our stay perfect. During our stay, we hiked the trails at Quoddy Head State Park and had lunch at Cohill's Inn on the Lubec Narrows. We didn't take the time to visit Campobello Island on this trip, but missed the experience. We did ride our bikes on the carriage trails at Acadia, drove to the top of Cadillac Mountain and had lunch on the water at Bar Harbor. We made good use of Betsy's beach ladder finding starfish, sand dollars, sea urchins and many other treasures! We had several visits from a Bald Eagle, watched deer in the yard, spied a seal just below the house and scared out a turkey. We were also entertained by a mother grouse that fanned her tail to protect her young. We biked around the point and met some wonderful neighbors like Eunice and Tyler H. Thompson. Mr. Thompson is somewhat of a local legend with an interesting history. His father, a diplomat, and mother were taken prisoner by Germans during World War ll. On clear nights we star-gazed from the upper deck, spotting many meteors and satellites. We loved playing games at the dining room table with the fire crackling….. Just follow Betsy's instructions to open the damper or you will become quickly acquainted with Hancock's EMS personnel!

Perfect Setting, Perfect House!

I was lucky enough to escape to the Aerie for my long birthday weekend, and it was absolutely wonderful! The house is perfect - it combines an easy country elegance with all the comforts of a luxury hotel. From the well-equipped kitchen, to the charming bedrooms and baths, we felt very pampered. On the rare occasions that we could tear ourselves away from the spectacular view over Frenchman's Bay (complete with soaring eagle!), the locatiion proved excellent, with proximity to both Acadia National Park and teh numerous lovely Downeast villages a definite plus. The nearest small town, Ellsworth, has some charming antique shops and some nice restaurants for a change of pace. I can't wait to go back!

Spectacular House, Views and Location

Aerie is an excellent property for either "active" or "relaxation-oriented" guests. The house has an exceptional combination of decks, windows and vistas which provide superb views of Frenchman's Bay and the adjacent coastlines. The house is very well equipped for "visiting chefs" and for those who enjoy reading, playing movies/games, absorbing the spectacular sunsets, nature-watching, etc.. We enjoyed nearby hiking (Schoodic Mtn, Black Mtn), kayaking (Donnell Pond, Sullivan Bay, Frenchman's Bay) and bicycling/walking in the peaceful, lightly traveled Hancock Point neighborhoods. There are a wide range of restaurants and food offerings nearby. Aerie's location offers visitors equally convenient access to either the quieter Downeast coastal area or the more recognized, busier Bar Harbor region.

What a treat!

Such a wonderful place to visit that even the government shut down of Acadia Park didn't diminish a thing. The house is located far enough away to not be hampered by tourists, but close enough to everything you might want. Surprisingly could not find any thing wrong with the house or area. Betsy was more than accommodating with information and followed through to see that we were aware of all the fun possibilities in the area. Our vacation time fortunately allowed us to take advantage of the wonderful fireplace. Sitting by the fireplace reading a book and enjoying the magnificent view was so soothing. Most importantly, everything in the house was accommodating from the eclectic decorating to having everything you needed. Comfortable and fun, we will be returning. I promise that if the pictures look like you would enjoy this home, you will.

Don't hesitate! a perfect private retreat.

In mid-May we had a restorative stay in this serene and lovely home. Aerie is large and well laid out with gorgeous rooms but we found it very cozy for two. It is thoughtfully stocked with everything imaginable for cooking or comfort. We spent hours on the deck taking in the views, watching the water by day and then stargazing at night. Lobster boats chugging by, loons calling and an eagle even flew right over my head! Most days it was hard to tear ourselves away from the house but it is in a beautiful area. Lots of exploring to do, scenic rides, great walks, Maine crafts to purchase, and of course tasty local foods. Our stay was like a deep calming breath. We hope to return!

DO get your groceries BEFORE you arrive at Aerie (don't forget the wine) because you will NOT want to leave once you get there! If you are looking for peace and tranquility, yet, some fine dining and culture close by, Aerie is the creme de la creme of places to stay! The MORE THAN ample stocked home offers comfy and cozy sophistication with views to DIE FOR. Wood fires to cry for.... beds and blankies to Sigh for. You will want for NOTHING! It is so adequately equipped with just about EVERYTHING you could possibly need or want. A multitude of dishes, pots, pans, utensils (many so cool and whimsical), linens, blankets, dvds, cds, stereo, fireplace/firewood, matches, really NICE bbq grill, lobster steaming pots, outdoor furniture, the softest/most plush towels, bicycles, helmets, the list is endless!!! Washer/Dryer....Every detail tended to. The property managers: just a phone call away. We can't WAIT to go back!! So Bright and Airy (Aerie)....even on the dreariest, rainy day!
