About this property

Sand Lake Cottage - near Tawas

State land within walking distance (right off of the paved bike path outside your door). ORV Trails are 1 ½ miles away and can be driven right from the driveway.

This gorgeous cabin is located on an all sports lake and was recently renovated to an open floor plan. The bathroom has a full tub/shower with an endless hot water system. Equipped with dish network, DVD/CD & portable radio & patio fire pit to use. There is a full size charcoal grill on the uncovered brick patio along with a couple of chairs & a picnic table.

The yard is large enough to play games and also has a large fire pit. All of the essentials you might need (including movie rentals, ice cream stand, pizza, hot food, fire wood, etc.) is located across the street.

There is a bike/rollerblade/walking path right outside the front door which will take you around all 7 lakes in the area. A playground is located around the corner and a public beach/picnic area on Sand Lake is about 1/4 mile, restaurants, gas station & additional stores (all along the bike path).

We are located 15 minutes from East Tawas where there is plenty of shopping, piers for fishing, beaches on Lake Huron, putt putt golf, etc. We are also 30 minutes either way from Omer & Oscoda where there are canoe rentals. Hale is 15 minutes away also.

Please note that there are 2 cabins located on the same property which share the private sandy beach, yard and large fire-pit.

Beautiful lake and cabin.

The property was very clean and nice. Sadly, we had a few days of rain. We are looking forward to renting again.

Really cute cottage

Super clean, comfortable cottage right on Sand Lake. Tawas is 15 minutes away and has a beautiful beach as well. Houghton/Higgins Lake just over an hour away. Really great store right across the street for necessities and awesome food. The cottage was very clean, very nice condition, and graciously stocked. The beds were comfortable, kitchen was super nice. We would definitely stay here again! Note: Regarding the neighbors, we found them to be quiet and cordial. They do want their property respected, which is completely understandable. They were fine, and we enjoyed and relaxing, quiet stay. Locals are super friendly and helpful - don't pass this one up!

The cottage was decent, clean and okay for 2 adults with a small dog to sleep, and get ready, not much more. The bed was comfortable for a couple nights. WIFI was extremely spotty, and we basically didn't even use it. There are limited grounded plug receptacles, so might need to be creative. The air conditioner worked fine, but it is just a window conditioner. Basically "hanging out" indoors would not be a recommendation, it just isn't comfortable. It is fully stocked; however very dated! There wasn't a large skillet that could be used (Teflon all scratched) no dish strainer. The outdoor space up by the cottage is very small, cluttered and dirty. It could be spruced up to be more comfortable and inviting however; biggest issue is the neighbors that you're literally right against, no fence, only no trespassing sticks with their property line marked and they very obviously do not like people renting next to them. They didn't say anything, just gave us dirty looks and slammed their door shut a couple times (we were just sitting quietly by the fire, not late) made it super uncomfortable to sit outdoors also. Maybe we're just used to southern hospitality but the people up here just are not friendly. We never did find the bike path, there is a road right outside the cabin that we rode on but it doesn't go by water? We did do a couple trips to Oscoda Beach and Tawas State Park, both within 1/2 hour drive and absolutely beautiful beaches, we took our bikes to the park to ride.

Girls getaway

I chose this place because the area is very near and dear to my heart. The location was perfect and being on the water was an added bonus. The cottage was small but that’s all we needed. There was just 2 ladies and that was just enough space for us. While the cottage was clean the couches were uncomfortable to relax on when we did spend time there. We had to bring our own shower towels which is fine but there should have been a supply of kitchen towels and hand towels for the bathroom. The price is very reasonable but I didn’t appreciate being forced to buy added insurance and I’m not sure if that’s a homeowner thing or a Vrbo thing. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying again.

Perfect get away

Nice property with lake access and convenience store directly across the street. We very much enjoyed playing with our dog in the crystal clear water. Brewery around the corner was fantastic and we also enjoyed dinner a few times at Sand Lake bar which was within walking distance. Overall pleasant stay.

Just what we needed

Cute, comfy and clean. Great location with a store, bar and microbrewery all in walking distance. Folks at store across the street have a little of everything and are super friendly. Wasn't the best weather but there was plenty to do in the area. Nice rides and walks. Thanks Sue!

Place is very clean, fully equipped kitchen, full bathroom, access to small lake. It is small though. Only 1 bedroom with queen bed. For a family of 4 with teenagers and a large dog it was way too small. The 3 stars are for sleeping arrangements. My kids had to use an old couch and even older futon that was very uncomfortable. AC is in the main room right over the futon so we could not use it at night as it would blow air right on your head. I believe if owners invested in a bunk bed it would increase the comfort of stay. I believe it is a great getaway for 2. Area is nice and quiet, only 10 miles from East Tawas which I fell in love with. There are OTR trails near by the town hall which we were able to walk every day (lots of sand) - loved that. Convenience store across the street. Lots to do in the area for those who like nature.

Family Vacation

The location is fantastic. Only 15 minutes from Tawas City. The lake stays shallow enough for quite a ways out, making it great for my kids. There is a great big swing that my kids loved. Plenty of yard to run around in for kids and animals. The home is cozy and the owner is kind. I'd stay here again.

Great stay on the lake

We stayed here last summer and it was the perfect little getaway at the lake. Great location and the host was wonderful and very friendly. Check in was easy. Everything you need in the cabin for cooking, etc. and the party store across the street made it even more convenient. Can’t wait to go back, in the works of booking our next stay for this year. Thank you Sue!

Small but cozy and gorgeous!

We had a wonderful time, the cabin was very nice to stay in, very clean and up to date!! Right on the water, a small convenience store right across the street, cozy place with a fire pit and grill! Only about 15 minutes from downtown Tawas. Would definitely recommend for a small family!

Furniture

We enjoyed our stay, a lot. The furniture, however, left a lot to be desired. The most comfortable place to sit inside were the kitchen chairs. The futon was impossible to sit on, I can't even imagine anyone sleeping on it. The couch was not much better. Even a slight upgrade in the furniture would go a long way. Please note, my "communication with property manager" rating is only because we really didn't have any.

Terrible Stay

The mattress in the bedroom needs to be replaced and the bedroom is too small, the left side of the bed is up against the wall. The Wi-Fi is non existent, especially in the bedroom. The futon mattress needs to be replaced. NO GFCI protection for the bathroom and kitchen outlets, so be careful. Hard to get the shower water temperature adjusted and very strong odor from the water. I asked about fishing off of the dock, but wasn't told that it would be surrounded by boats. A very disappointing vacation, I will not be back.

Nice place for a getaway!

We enjoyed our weeklong stay at this cabin. Cabin was clean and as described. Owner was responsive to messages/questions I had. Nice area with amenities such as firewood, food, ice cream, etc. right across the road. The water was nice, and the only real downside was that the beach/sand was a little mucky right near the edge of the water, so we had to use the dock to enter. Water level is perfect for small children as it is shallow for quite a distance out. Close distance to Tawas/Oscoda and we took advantage of those beaches as well. Overall, we had a very nice experience!

About the host

Host profile image
My husband's family built a cottage (with Sand Lake access) down the street in 1978. When his parents decided to sell the property we decided to purchase our property on Sand Lake. It is only 3 hours from where we live so we travel there often to 'get out of the city.'

Why they chose this property

The cottage is only 10 miles from East Tawas and Lake Huron. There is a bike/rollerblade/walking path right outside the front door which will take you around all 7 lakes in the area. There is also a playground right around the corner and plenty of other children to play with in the area. We are located about 15 minutes from East Tawas where there is plenty of shopping, a long pier for fishing, beaches on Lake Huron, etc. We are also about 30 minutes either way from Omer & Oscoda where there are canoe rentals.

What makes this property unique

Beautifully renovated, open concept cottage on beautiful private sandy beach/lakefront on (all sports) Sand Lake. Our cottage has a fully equipped kitchen and dining area that is open to the living room. Enjoy the relaxation on the patio or enjoy the private beach. The water is so clear and sandy with a slow gradual slope and you can even see the snails making trails in the water! There is also a dock for swimming when weather permits. There is also a shared fire pit on the beach. Take a short walk to Huron National Forest State Park, playground and local stores for ice cream, pizza, movie rentals and other necessities.
