Classic Gite

Janine and Anthony are very warm and welcoming and made us feel at home as soon as we arrived. The gite was traditionally decorated, we had everything we needed and our beds were very comfortable. The highlight for us was the pool which was warm, modern and of a good size and there were plenty of sun loungers available. The gardens were lovely to have a little walk around in the evening and play things like table tennis and football with our children. A huge thank you to our hosts! xx

Lovely location and quality pool

First visit to the Dordogne and this is the perfect place to explore the castles chateau and countryside. Convenient to St Cyprian and walking distance to the river. Lovely and helpful hosts with useful local info on places to visit and details of weekly markets. We were lucky enough to have the lovely pool to ourselves for the week we were there but there's plenty of beds for all the gites. No downside for us at all - just a comfortable and relaxing week.

Bonne continuation ! Axel, Iris, Mélanie & Eric

This is a really fine place to stay!

Our hosts were both helpful and discrete. All the facilities (flat, pool, barbecue etc) were in perfect order, the park was big and peaceful with beautiful trees and plants, and Janine and Anthony had a fine balance between help and discretion. They really care for there guests and we were even invited to a dinner with there friends which was nice and very interesting as we met people from several European Countries. Saint Cyprien is not far away and this town has all you need. - we went there on bikes for market, going to restaurants and so on.

A wonderful stay

My wife and I had a wonderful week in our Gite. We were welcomed by Janine and Anthony and soon felt at home. We drove down from Calais with an overnight stay in Le Mans and our return journey a week later In Bagnoles-de-l'orne. The Gite was fully equipped for all that you would need with a lovely view of the gorgeous swimming pool and grounds. We swam everyday and enjoyed some great cycle rides, walks, canoeing and visits to spectacular Chateaux's. Janine and Anthony gave us some great tips on where to visit and eat. The Gite was in walking distance of St Cyprien a flat walk of 30 minutes over the bridge and into the town. There were various restaurants and bars but the town seemed very quiet except on Sunday (market day). The supermarket and petrol station also very handy for supplies. We will hold fond memories of sitting at our outside table watching the wildlife and also sharing a glass of wine or two with our wonderful hosts. We hope to be able to return in the future and enjoy again all the delights the Dordogne holds .

Very clean - well equipped, spacious with a lovely terrace with table & chairs to enjoy views.

Anthony & Janine couldn't have been more welcoming or hospitable. We given a guided tour & then sat with them to enjoy a glass of wine. The Gite was superb, plenty of cutlery - china and kitchen utensils. Very nice terrace right outside of the gite with table - chairs and umbrella to sit and while away the hours in an evening. The heated swimming pool was great with comfy sun loungers - barbecue area with table and chairs. This was our first trip to France in the car and we couldn't have picked a better area or property to stay in. Myself, wife and 5 year old English springer spaniel thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We would like to say a big thank you to Anthony & Janine for making us so welcome and making our first trip to France so enjoyable. We will be going back and would highly recommend this accommodation.

Great gite, beautiful setting, fabulous location

These gites are situated in a beautiful, unspoiled, rural location and yet walking distance from the nearest town and right on top of the river Dordogne which is fantastic for safe family canoeing. Our gite was very well set out and equipped with a very comfortable sofa bed in the lounge area and bedroom with gorgeous traditional French furniture - the best gite we have stayed in in France and great value for money. We really enjoyed the pool , just a stone's throw from the gites with quality sunbeds and surrounded by fields and lovely gardens. We made use of the brick-built bbq by the pool and the laundry room with free use of washing machine was a bonus. The hosts, Janine and Anthony were very welcoming and helpful. The welcome aperitif and canapes they put on was a lovely touch and we enjoyed a fabulous lunch with them and some other guests at a local restaurant on our last day. We highly recommend this property and the area - there is something for everyone - castles, caves and canoeing to name just a few of the many attractions. We highly recommend Laugerie Basse and intend to go back!

Perfect accommodation in peaceful location.

Laugerie Basse is a beautiful well maintained property. We have stayed here twice and will certainly be going again. Everything you need is in the gites, we have never stayed in such a well equipped accommodation. and there is a separate shared laundry room. The pool is fantastic it is heated and it has a barbecue area just at the side. The grounds and orchard area are very well maintained and if the fruit is ripe you can pick your own. We hired a car from the airport and the drive to the accommodation is beautiful and takes less than an hour following the very easy directions which the owner can send to you. We stayed for two weeks and visited many amazing places with a 30 minute radius as well as having lazy days around the pool. Shopping is easy just a 5 minute drive from the accommodation is a large supermarket. And a great market on a Sunday. The owners Janine & Anthony are really friendly and are very knowledgeable about the local area, whilst there we visited Sarlat, Belves, Domme, Chateau de MIlandes, Cabanes Du breuil , Chateau de Commarque, Jardin de Marquessac, La Roque Gaegac, Maison Forte de Raignac, Parc la Bournat, Roque saint Christophe and many other amazing and beautiful places. We will definitely be re booking this accomadation and love the Dordogne. I recommend this property to all my friends and family.

Amazing holiday with lovely, helpful owners

We had a wonderful holiday at these gites. Firstly, and as all the other reviews have said, they are brilliantly situated in this area. There is so much to do, for adults and kids, all within 20 minutes by car, all leaflets are found in the gites. The gites themselves and their facilities are probably the best we have stayed in. Our son loved them because of the land around the gites and pool to play football, cricket, ping pong etc, all provided by the owners. Lastly, Janine and Anthony were warm, welcoming hosts who were always there to answer any questions with a smile and sometimes a beer! Anthony also took my husband to play golf one morning (my husband was having withdrawal symptoms!). This is the first review I have ever written as I highly recommend these gites.

Everything you need in a perfect location!

Laugerie Basse is perfectly situated which is why we initially chose this gite. It's right in the middle of the most beautiful and interesting areas of the Dordogne, so gorgeous places to visit are only a short drive away. The owners, Antony and Janine are lovely people, who instantly made us feel at home, and they really were as helpful as they could have been. The gites are spacious and well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, each with its own patio/balcony with table and chairs for Al fresco eating. The large, heated pool is particularly lovely, and has comfortable loungers and seating where you can quite happily spend all day relaxing if you don't feel like going out. There are bikes too, which we borrowed one day, and had a beautiful cycle ride all along the riverside to Beynac and back with our teenage daughter, which was wonderful. There is a small badminton net, table tennis and a football 'pitch' too, so plenty of space for children to let off steam in the well kept, pretty grounds. Although, we had our privacy, it was nice to chat to the other guests to find out what discoveries they had made during the day too! We would definitely go back, as Laugerie Basse had everything we were looking for, and is suitable for anyone... couples, young children, teenage children or the elderly.

Review

Laugerie Basse is situated in a beautiful part of the Dordogne. It is in a very quiet location but not far from St Cyprian with its amenities. It is also an excellent base for exploring the wider region. You even have the option of the nearby train service which I used to enjoy a great day out in Bergerac including a relaxed lunch without having to drive afterwards. But if you want even more relaxation, the property has a spacious pool and gardens and fields to enjoy.

Laugerie Basse

Laugerie Basse is set in its own attractive parkland in stunning Dordogne countryside and is perfectly situated as a centre to explore the Dordogne Valley and its picture postcard towns and villages. The Gites are tastefully appointed and airy and just metres away from the very tempting luxury pool. Janine and Anthony are naturally friendly and gregarious, as you will find, and are a source of priceless tips on sights, activities and restaurants in thier area. With guests from France, the U.K. and most neighbouring countries it can make for an interesting mix of fellow guests to chat with by the pool. What better location to enjoy and relaxing and stimulating French experience ? We did. J.D. and friends. London. We hired a car at Brive Airport but others did so from Bergerac.

3 visits and counting...

We have stayed at Laugerie Basse with our family (2 teenage boys) and friends on three separate occasions now and will certainly be returning in the future. The proprietors, Anthony and Janine Burden, are wonderful hosts and made us feel totally welcome and relaxed from the minute we arrived. Set in a beautiful, quiet location, the gites are spacious, clean, tastefully furnished and fully equipped with everything required. The lovely heated pool is a really good size for proper swimming as well as games and the pool area is great for chilling and sunbathing. We have played football, cricket, badminton, table tennis and bowls in the grounds and gardens - all equipment on site. We've also been canoeing on the Dordogne which is great fun. The surrounding area is stunning, with the river and chateaux dominating the landscape. The nearest town, St Cyprien, is 5 mins by car, 10 by bike, and has plenty of bars, restaurants, shops, a street market on Sundays and a Carrefour supermarket. Definitely 10 out of 10!

Fantastic place

We really enjoyed the warm and friendly welcome at Laugerie Basse. The owners were generous to a fault and the facilities fabulous: fantastic swimming pool, fields for football or badminton, and the rooms just the right size. You will need a car for lots of activities such as visiting the local nocturnes, the hanging gardens at Marquessac or the myriad caves and their fabulous ice structures and prehistoric paintings. That said, there is much to do within walking distance - kayaking down the Dordogne was a favourite of ours, and walking into St Cyprien for the local market or just to sample one of the fine restaurants. Of course, it goes without saying that the wine in this area is fabulous and you can expect to pay a fraction of the prices in the UK. If you do like wine - and you have a car - then getting out to one of the wineries is a good day out (be careful not to drink beyond the limit as the French laws are quite strict and the police are quite vigilant in their enforcement). We bought lots of bottles back and took them home on the train with us, itself a nice journey as it winds through the Dordogne valley. In summary, super friendly owners, great facilities, great local amenities, and lots to do in the surrounding area. Very good for families or those wishing for a good mix of activities and the ability to blob out by a pool.

A must

Beautifully situated in a lovely country lane. The gites are sized very generously with a lively homely feel to them. There is plenty of space for outdoor dining overlooking the beautiful garden and fabulous pool. Loads of outdoor space for game. We visited the local village and towns. Very picturesque. The dordoin river was very busy with canoeists and boats. The couple who runs the place were very knowledgable about the area which helped greatly. Altogether we had a wonderful stay in a mini slice of heaven. Def recommend.

About the host

Host profile image
I have visited this area for many years and fell in love with this beautiful place, I love nature and nothing could be more perfect than living here. I decided to have a complete lifestyle change and moved from the UK May 2021 to follow my dreams of living and working here in France. I have two grown up sons called James and Matthew who have spent several holidays here with me before I decided to make the move. They are delighted and will be spending many holidays here with their partners and friends! The move here was made easier as my sister Jillian and her partner Nigel live about a minute away from Laugerie Basse with their dog Elon, which is fantastic and I have a cat called Miska .. it's fun when the dog and cat meet !! So ..it's very much a family affair here as my folks visit as well and enjoy this beautiful place.

I love walking along the Dordogne river as the views are stunning in all seasons and it's very peaceful, there are lots of fantastic walks here to enjoy. I am happy to suggest good walks or even show guests a lovely walk locally. I also enjoy cycling , swimming , canoeing and meditation and it's the perfect place here at Laugerie Basse to enjoy all of these activities.

Why they chose this property

Laugerie Basse is beautiful, a very calming and relaxing place which is why I fell in love with it here.
I live in the farmhouse on site and there are 4 lovely gites for rent . The pool is fantastic and the grounds to roam around and relax in are stunning, there is a play area for children and an orchard for guests to enjoy as well. The sunrise and sunsets are beautiful and it is such a lovely space to be in, perfect for families, couples, friends.

What makes this property unique

It’s unique as it provides a home from home feel , it is very private and peaceful enabling guests to relax in a tranquil setting.

It is very close to St Cyprien town and a lovely short walk to the Dordogne river. There are many beautiful places to visit in the surrounding area, so lots of sightseeing and then returning to a relaxing environment is perfect for all.

So I look forward to welcoming you to my beautiful home.

Jeanie
