## Emplacement
From its past, Fréjus has preserved a large number of monuments. Indeed, with 2,000 years of history, this city of Art and History of the Var has an important historical and architectural heritage.
The Roman remains are the oldest traces of its past and consist of an amphitheater, a theater and an aqueduct of which some pillars and arcades remain. Dating back to the end of the 1st century, the arenas could accommodate nearly 12,000 spectators who came to witness the gladiator fights!
In the old town, the episcopal group of Fréjus, built between the 5th and 16th centuries, is also part of this remarkable heritage. It combines the beautiful Saint-Léonce cathedral, with a Romanesque bell tower and two naves connected by several arcades. But also the baptistery of octagonal shape dating from the 5th century, one of the oldest in France, the episcopal palace transformed into town hall, as well as the Romanesque cloister, whose wooden ceiling was decorated with real or imaginary characters and animals. The archaeological museum adjacent to the cloister houses remarkable antique carved pieces from excavations in the Roman city.
