About this property

On the Ocean at Kealakekua Bay. Where the Dolphins Play.

'Okika Lani sits at the south end of Kealakekua Bay on a private road with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, the Captain Cook Monument, and crescent shaped, white sand Ke'ei Beach.

Enter the gate at 'Okika Lani and walk into an inner courtyard of Bamboo Palms, orchids, and tropical landscaping. Follow the path to the main house. A reclining Buddha resides on the entry table and greets all visitors when they walk through the front door. High ceilings, an open floor plan, and the sound of waves breaking against the shoreline beckon visitors into this spectacular Hawaiian home.

A wall of glass and sliding doors opens from the central great room onto a tiled porch. It's just a few steps down to the patio, private pool, lawn, magnificent bay and ocean views. Watch the morning dive boats anchor across the Bay at the Captain Cook Monument while taking your local Kona coffee and fresh papaya by the pool. Or marvel at the resident pod of Spinner Dolphins leaping and cavorting in the pristine waters while no one else is around to see.

'Okika Lani was designed by an award winning architect in the traditional Hawaiian style of post and beam construction, vaulted ceilings, and a spacious, open floor plan. A large kitchen, great room, and beautiful master suite all grace this stunning home. Screened lanais on both ends of the house offer airy opportunities for private dining or simply relaxing out of the tropical sun. A substantial master bath boasts oversize shower, walk in closets, soaking tub, and skylights.

A separate guest cottage, accessed from the inner courtyard, also features two bedrooms (one bedroom with a king size bed the other bedroom with two ex long twin beds), shared bath, screened lanai, ceiling fans, and guest privacy.

'Okika Lani represents the epitome of elegance and seclusion amid the splendid tropical setting of Kealakekua Bay. The home's orientation to the sun and the sea make every sunset a picture perfect centerpiece for the perfect day. In the evening, try to catch the green flash of sunset, from the pool, lanai, or great room, and sip the perfect maitai at the end of a perfect day in paradise.

Aloha and Enjoy.

Wonderful Vacation
This was the perfect location for complete rest and relaxation! We could see whales and dolphins from the back patio and the beaches were within walking distance. The sunsets from this spot were a great way to close out each day. Main house and guest house were exceptional.

Idillic Hawaiian Getaway
Lovely upscale home right on water’s edge of Kealakekua Bay. Expansive bedroom and bath in the house; additional two bedrooms with single bath in detached cottage. Fifteen minute walk to sandy beach. Nearby kayak rentals for excursions to Captain Cook‘s Monument. Nicely remote with minimal tourist activity in the area—a good 30 min drive to nearest groceries, restaurants, shopping, etc. Overall, gorgeous and tranquil Hawaiian experience. Would stay again.

Wonderful home.
So happy the owners are willing to let us stay in this spectacular unique mid century modern Hawaiian home. Architecture is welcoming and unique. This is our third visit. Kitchen upgrades have been made but do not diminish the quality of this home. Just Love this home. Pure serenity. Amazing experience.

Beautiful view!
Lovely home; however, A/C with doors shut all time in bedrooms were good….no AC in rest of house with open windows did not sufficiently cool living area. Guest cottage has no view and to access bathroom you had to walk out on porch. Bathroom in guest cottage had no AC.. very warm even with widows open Perfect house for 1 couple…

We loved staying at this house. Everything was perfect and just what we needed for our family of 5. Loved being away from the resorts and town. Be prepared to stock up on groceries because it does take a bit to get to the stores. Cannot wait to come again!!

Awesome family get-away!
The home was a perfect spot for our quiet family retreat, allowing us to relax while working away and enjoying vacation at the same time. Beautiful home and location, very pleasant neighbors in a quiet neighborhood, and wonderful communicative hosts. Our whole family's collective "Thank you!" to Shelley and Chrissy for sharing their home.

Gorgeous home and property! The sunsets were magical right from the backyard. The home and grounds were well kept and maintained. It was a 10-15 minute drive up the mountain to the main road so no quick food pickup but the views from the drive was well worth it for us. We wanted to be away from the hustle and bustle so the quiet neighborhood was a bonus for sure! Spent the days exploring and the evenings poolside watching the sunset with amazing oceanfront views. DIdn't disappoint and was by far the best place we have ever rented!

Amazing week in dolphin paradise!! Magical house, magical bay.
After many years using VRBO, including other vacation rentals on the Big Island, we have to say that this was our BEST VRBO experience ever. The house is architecturally gorgeous, with the porch looking out onto a perfectly manicured lawn, swimming pool and onto one of our favorite bodies of water in the world, Kealakekua bay. You can see Captain Cook Monument and we woke up to dolphins swimming in front most days. The property is located in a private community and is hence very protected and quiet. Kealakekua bay is 3 min down the road and Two Step is 15 min the other way. What really made the experience special was the host and owner, Chrissy. She made the whole stay super welcoming, and went out of her way to help us with a few minor issues that cropped up. She was super responsive to our questions and texts throughout the week. As it happened, Hurricane Hone was on track to hit the Big Island exactly the evening when our flight was due to leave! Chrissy even generously offered to let us stay another night if we were stranded! Fortunately thanks to majestic Mauna Kea’s shelter, we managed to get out on time, reluctantly leaving paradise behind. Our deepest thanks and Mahalo to you and your family Chrissy, for allowing us the privilege of staying at your stunning property and for being so generous and welcoming!

The most amazing home on Big Island
I have been traveling to the Hawaiian islands since 1975, I have visited all five islands. The area where this house is located is void of any tourists, hotels, traffic and the rat race. The area of Captain Cook especially near the ocean is an actual Representative of Hawaiian lifestyle dating back before tourism. If you are reading my review you have seen the photos, it’s actually more amazing seeing it in person. The house has everything you could possibly need. A wonderful breeze as it sits on the ocean, great shade in the afternoon sitting on the covered lanai‘s, air conditioning for those wanting a guaranteed an amazing night sleep. You will not be sorry I guarantee it. One last bit of advice is book it now before it is no longer available for when you want to go.

Not what it is advertised as
The owners had people spying on us. They have the a/c disconnected in the living room kitchen area. They tell you to open the windows and sliding doors and the ocean breeze will cool it off. 85+ by noon is not cool to us. The beach is not a short walk from the property. No walking where wild pigs are roaming around for us. Very very disappointed, it basically ruined our stay. The only thing good I can say is the sunsets were nice. Definitely not what we paid for it. We are honest good people and were not treated well.

Simply wonderful
I'm going to add my voice to the chorus of praise for this wonderful, inviting, relaxing place. My wife and I stayed on this property for 9 nights with our 14 and 9 year old daughters, and I find myself constantly wishing to be back. The other reviewers have summed things up perfectly, so please read those as well. Our ending up at this location is what I call a "lucky misfortune". We actually booked a house a couple of doors down last October and were contacted in January that the reservation was being cancelled due to the owner saying that some working being done was behind scheduled and had a chance of not being completed by the time we arrived. He had contacted Shelley, this property's owner, to see if we could stay here and she contacted me about it before our panic had managed to fully kick in. Thank goodness things ended up the way they did. I can't say if the other home was nicer, and after staying here, I couldn't care less. Shelley is great; completely easy to work with and responsive to your concerns. One other note. Somebody else had mentioned about the disparity between the bedrooms, and I would like to add to that. I wouldn't recommend this house for two or three couples each with a equal share. Rest assured, the bedrooms in the guest house are very nice and worked great for our kids; it gave them a nice measure of privacy as they both like to go off and read (or text friends back home, ahem) by themselves for long stretches. But they don't offer the ocean (and moonset) view or large attached bath, and the sound of the ocean waves appear to be cut off as well if you like to fall asleep to that noise as I do. I also don't recommend this for families with small children who sleep in their own rooms as the separation of the guest house rooms would probably be intimidating to them.

This was my 2nd of hopefully many stays at this beautiful property. The location on Kealakekua Bay can’t be beat and the home is well laid out and immaculately maintained. The view is spectacular and the pool allows for refreshing dips without having to go into the ocean (which you should do anyway with nearby access). Kayak rentals are a short walk away. If you are looking for a peaceful vacation spot that is away from the hustle and bustle of town and other vacationers, this is the pace!

Hawaiian Paradise.
The property is just as pretty in person as it is in the photos. The house is older, but well-maintained. All of the appliances are updated, we cooked most of our meals there. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need and more. The location was very convenient for us, we have been to the big Island several times, and have stayed all along the Kona side. Staying in the Captain Cook Bay was very relaxing and fun watching the different excursions coming and going. The proximity to Southpoint, Green Sand Beach, Black Sand Beach and volcanoNational Park made day trips, easy! we really enjoyed the pool, did water aerobics every morning and took a swim every night before bed, all while looking and listening to the crash of the waves against the rocks, not more than 20 to 30 yards away, what an unreal experience. The guest house was very comfortable for the couple we were traveling with a little hotter inside they had to use the air conditioning. We never turned it on in the big house, opened all the windows and use screens on the doors. All the showers have been updated and worked very well. The linens on the beds were of nice quality as were the bath towels which there were many. Another thing that was very much appreciated was having lots of beach towels available. The property outside is kept up on a regular basis. The owners and their daughter, that is the property manager, we’re very easy to get a hold of and work with.

This home has everything you need for the most perfect stay: beautiful sunsets, unbeatable views, wonderful private pool, gorgeous landscaping, exquisite decor, a kitchen with everything you need, very comfortable bed, big fluffy towels, over-size beach towels, and privacy from neighbors. Plus, it’s directly on the ocean! This is paradise! We didn’t want to leave!

About the host

Hosted by Shelley Dupuis

Host profile image
'Okika Lani was built by a U.S. corporate executive and his wife who found themselves in the unique situation of having to commute to Australia at least two times a month. Hawaii was a natural stopover. A dear friend referred them to the spot and recommended they build here as a place to rest from long travels. The rest of the story, as they say, is history.

Why they chose this property

Originally, 'Okika Lani was chosen for its seclusion and spectacular beauty. Kealakekua Bay provides an incredible opportunity to get away from the hustle of modern life. At the same time it is the essence of real living and an opportunity to reconnect with the soul. It has tremendous historical significance to the State of Hawaii and the Native Hawaiian Community, and for all who visit this special place, it has a life changing influence.

What makes this property unique

'Okika Lani provides an opportunity for seclusion amid the most spectacular tropic setting. Proximity to civilization maintains the security of modern services, while the sense of remoteness allows one to completely unwind from the tensions of modern society. The spectacular setting gives one a sense of peace, serenity, and complete relaxation.
