About this property

Unique Madison River Montana Fly Fishing Rental Home, Private Sun West Ranch

Welcome to Big Sky Country!

Before I jump into the description, I must tell you that September and October are, by far, one of the most magical times on the ranch. Crowds are gone, the fishing picks up and elk are a daily occurrence on the property. You can hear their bugling and "cow screams" from dusk into the AM. It's indescribable and hits your soul! It's like having a mini-Yellowstone and you can stay in your PJs!

This is not your typical, "Montana Log Home." In fact, far from it. Our home is truly incredible and its unique craftsmanship, while situated on a private 2,000 acre ranch with 4 miles of private Madison River access, will take your breath away. The house is one of 6 homes featured in the 2013 Madison Valley Home Tour by the Madison Valley Medical Center. 13 miles of private dirt roads and trails to run, bike or hike in addition to private ponds (stocked with Western Cutthroat trout!) and Yellowstone-like wildlife that you can view without the typical crowds and tour busses of people. Did we say PRIVIATE? We just ask that you please be considerate and respectful of the moose, elk, deer, and (occasional) wolves by keeping your distance and enjoying them for their wild beauty rather than an 'Instagramable moment.' :-)

Many of our guests are repeat visitors and we expect you will fall in love with the river, the mountains, and the beauty of our Madison River Valley Lodge as well. Oh, and the fishing is some of the best in the world - right out the front door!

The home is scrubbed clean after each stay. Our cleaning team thoroughly disinfects and sanitizes all kitchen and bathroom surfaces, as well as frequently touched surfaces such as tabletops, light switches, doorknobs, stove, fridge and more. Linens and towels are thoroughly washed. The Madison River Lodge is extremely unique, comfortable, inviting, and warm with hand-crafted interiors by expert artisans from an Amish community in MT. Everything is powered by solar energy and backed up by the grid. This is truly a one-of-a-kind new, environmentally sensitive dwelling.

Madison River Lodge is nestled perfectly in fisherman's paradise. The home and property are surrounded by majestic mountains with 4 miles of PRIVATE access to the Blue-Ribbon waters of the Madison River. Drive or walk down the driveway, pull up your waders and you will find yourself standing in a trophy river with a backdrop of the Madison Range mountains above you. When you are ready to explore, other nearby fishing spots including, Hebgen Lake, Henry's Lake, Quake Lake, Coffee Pot, and Cliff and Wade Lakes. Yellowstone National Park is just a scenic 42-mile drive away. If you want to stay local, the property has several stocked ponds and creeks in addition to the private Madison River access.

For those of you who like to mountain bike or trail run, make sure you get up early to run or bike the many miles of gravel roads and trails for the amazing views and wildlife viewing on the 2,000-acre ranch. You are just about guaranteed not to see a vehicle go by!

While you are at the house, keep your eyes out for bald eagles, osprey, mule deer, big horn sheep, moose, and elk.

Unforgettable 270-degree vistas of mountains, river and ever-changing light. In the evenings, hike or drive to view wildlife similar to Yellowstone's on this 2000-acre ranch. If you wish to visit Yellowstone National Park, it's a beautiful 42 mile-drive away. For some real Cowboy Town action, Ennis is 30 minutes north. Bozeman is around 1.25 hours Northeast.

Wireless internet is also available throughout the house but heck, we recommend you stay offline and ignore your email!
General Description of the Madison River Fishing Lodge: You will be embraced with a warm (and cool in the summer), comfortable, healthy GREEN home utilizing solar power but grid intertied with 270 degree vistas of mountain ranges, sitting above the trout-rich Madison River, in a ranch setting 42 miles from Yellowstone National Park (30 miles from Ennis) and with private access to 3 ½ miles of fishing on the Madison River.

The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, laundry, grill, ample parking, complete privacy and safety on a secluded, private ranch.

The kitchen contains top-of-the-line equipment including double Miele ovens with Magic Chef programming, a DCS gas cook-top, a silent Bosch dishwasher, a large refrigerator with freezer compartment, and a good size pantry. There is an outdoor Weber gas grill.

The house has a steam bath as well as a Jacuzzi bath.

The entertainment system includes a Blue Ray DVD player, a CD player, stereo speakers in several rooms, large screen TV, with Fire Stick (Amazon). There is high-speed wireless internet access throughout the house with a broadband internet connection.
The 3500 sq. ft. house was built during 2007-09 using renewable resources. It features thick adobe-style walls which, together with a highly insulated roof, keep the house at a constant comfortable temperature for a good part of the year. The house is designed to admit the winter sun and protect against the summer sun. Each room in the house features an interlocking, artistic interplay between wood and plaster. The plaster is a green product with a low carbon footprint (it absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere) and has high vapor exchange properties which tends to preclude water condensation. Straw bales are the insulation between the exterior and interior plaster.

There is a large outdoor porch sitting area with comfortable rocking chairs; a number of small sitting patios tucked strategically around the outside of the house with marvelous views; an outdoor picnic area; plenty of open space to enjoy; and complete privacy.

The house sits adjacent to an elk migration route (fall and spring) on land that may be considered part of the greater Yellowstone eco-system. The house is situated on a 2,000-acre ranch subdivision which has 1600 acres in conservation for recreation. The ranch resources include 3 ½ miles of riverfront on the Madison River, 2 trout ponds, a tributary of the Madison (Horse Creek), wildlife, and 12 plus miles of private roads for jogging and walking.

West Yellowstone is 42 miles; Ennis is 30 miles; and Bozeman is 90 miles. There are airports at West Yellowstone and Bozeman. The elevation of the house is 6000 ft.

Area activities include river, lake fishing, river floating (a boat launch just downriver from the house), hiking, sightseeing/ exploring, biking, horseback riding, camping, cross country skiing, and an enormous area of BLM Land and Beaverhead National Forest abutting the southern end of the ranch.

Smoking is not permitted inside the house. Pets are not allowed.

Best view on the ranch!

We enjoyed our week long stay at this beautiful home in Sun West Ranch. We spotted a black bear twice on the ranch and a large herd of elk on the mountain. The birds and ground squirrels were a treat. We could also hear the coyote yelping in the middle of the night. The home is gorgeous and roomy. We had an adventurous week driving into Yellowstone and we went fly fishing in The Madison. We went to the rodeo in West Yellowstone and whitewater rafting on The Gallatin River in Big Sky. We even drove back to Bozeman for some shopping and good food. Speaking of good food, the Grizzly restaurant is a must, if hungry for a great dinner! We appreciate the opportunity to stay in such a place and experience the gorgeous state of Montana again.

Gorgeous Views, privacy, wildlife, and great hiking

We had an absolutely blast. We wanted a place far from the tourists and busy of Yellowstone but close enough to still visit the park. The house is literally 3 miles from the main road. Plenty of privacy. We saw elk, moose and coyotes just sitting on the porch. We an elk herd and a bear hiking from the house on the ranch property. It was a memorable experience for our entire group. The house itself is great. Plenty of kitchen pots and pans, dishes, and other amenities. We bought bear spray but there was already some left behind so you might want to wait to buy any. It is expensive. The view from the dining table was a favorite and we all enjoyed just looking out at the view. Plenty of ground squirrels for entertainment right outside the window. Beds were all comfortable and plenty of sheets and towels. The dishwasher worked fine, although the latch release is broken and hard to push over. Bathrooms were all great and wonderful water pressure. Washer and dryer worked fine as well. The owners have great communication and made sure we had all the information we needed before arrival. We will definitely stay here again one day and have already recommended the house to friends. We did several hikes of 2-4 miles just leaving from the house. There are also lots of National Forest hikes nearby. We all enjoyed the Papoose Creek trail. It is about a 2 hr drive to Artist Point, Yellowstone and 1 hr 40 min to Bozeman airport. 30min to Ennis grocery. It's a great place! Just go!

Amazing!!

The house is amazing! Location was great, views were just what we wanted, house was just what was expected. We did have an issue with the hot water however the owner was easy to each, responded right away and offered a temporary solution as well as fixed it permanently the next day. The house is about 40 min to Yellowstone which was perfect for us, we would pack a lunch and grab dinner in West Yellowstone, either at a restaurant or picked up stuff at the two markets in West Yellowstone.

Beautiful House, Beautiful Ranch, Beautiful Area ...

We had a wonderful stay labor day week at this ranch location that was quiet and convenient. We enjoyed two days in Yellowstone, several days fishing the Madison and being a tourist in Ennis and Virginia City. The house was a great central location for our family of 8 - everyone had a room and we ate great meals looking out the picture windows. The house had all you need for cooking and grilling. Reid was very responsive to questions about the area, sites to see and more -- all in all, got great reviews from the entire family!!!

You will be amazed!

We almost didn’t want to tell anyone else how wonderful this house was… may become too booked to be able to rent again! Honestly, if the peacefulness of the surroundings and the architecture of the home don’t move you, you need to check your pulse. Reid was a wonderful host and was very easy to communicate with - he even checked on us after our trip. The kitchen was stocked with the basics and there is never a shortage of nice, hot water. There is even a corn hole game board outside to use - we had a tournament every evening. There is a great little nook/den off of the dining room which is great for reading or taking in the view. When you visit, say hello to Gomer the Gopher who watches the place when you are gone. And if you fly fish, visit the folks at BearTooth Fly Shop. Ally, Ryan and Nancy are the best. Enjoy your stay here, you can’t go wrong!

A Montana Dream

We looked for months for a place in Montana we could stay that would be close enough to Yellowstone, yet secluded enough to enjoy peace and quiet. This met all of our expectations and more! The property is surrounded by the most gorgeous views you will find anywhere. We spent a lot of time hiking around the area. The kids enjoyed searching for rocks and exploring the land. The house itself is huge and so unique. The photos do not do it justice. You will find everything you need as well. It was truly a home away from home. ❤️

waterfront retreat

The location - right on the ocean in a calm bay - made this one of the most beautiful, relaxing vacations I’ve had. Having an excellent restaurant (dog friendly) in walking distance was perfect. We ate there 4 nights, it was so good. The house and cottage are definitely beachy, laid back, and a little dated, but have everything you need. Kitchen is well equipped and having the cottage with another small kitchen was great. Perfect location for kayaking and paddle boarding. Coffee on the deck, or in little sun room if weather was inclement, was perfect to watch all the lobsterman start their day. The yard and grounds are great, lots of space and privacy from neighbors. We discovered we have a sea dog, as she sat on deck smelling the sea air and watching birds and boats for hours. Did a couple local hikes and got a few bike rides in, otherwise didn’t leave the property. Hope to get back to this spot again - highly recommend it.

Amazing Madison Home

First, my wife and I found Sun West Ranch and the homeowner Larry to be more than accommodating! The setting is an unspoiled gem and they work hard to maintain its pristine condition. The home itself is awe inspiring. Prepare yourself for the views! Pictures alone cannot do the experience justice. The property is designed as a retreat and in the always-on constant-ping world most of us live in day-to-day prepare for a slower restful environment. The wifi is indeed high-speed and the isolation is really just an illusion; but, it is a very good illusion. I was able to attend to business with my VPN connection without any difficulty and I am in the data management field so ... not just email or slack usage. The Madison is a treasure and rewards the good a presentation of dry or subsurface soft-hackle fly. I found both traditional casting and trout spey rewarding and was able to record nearly as many browns as rainbows! The highlight for me was watching an Osprey take a rainbow less than ten yards from me as I stood in the river. I cook extensively and found the kitchen delightful and the range-top to be as precise as you could want. The grill is wonderful for those evenings where you want to keep dinner simple. Yellowstone is "right down the road" in Montana-speak and we found we could easily go into the park in the evenings for a lovely picnic dinner while the majority of the visitors were leaving. We loved soaking our feet in the Nez Pearce creek after a picnic and an outing to Old Faithful. If you are considering a "perfect" spot for a retreat, you have found it here in responsive owners, a fully equipped property, clean comfortable home, and wonderful view. Don't forget to set an alarm to look at the sky at 3 AM. It'll be worth it even on vacation!

Best trip ever

This was easily one of the best trips that we have taken as a family. The house is incredible with views that are beyond belief. The house was perfectly stocked with all of the essential items that we needed to prepare meals and easily accommodated our group of 10. With all of SW Montana at your fingertips, you won't know where to begin. Days began slow for us as we found it difficult to leave the coffee cup and insane views of the river valley behind. The fishing right in front of the cabin was fabulous and the kids enjoyed catching cutthroat from the ponds that are on the ranch. I can't thank Larry enough for his generosity and warm hospitality; it truly felt like a family friend simply gave us the keys to their Montana home rather than a VRBO rental. Thank you again, Larry!

Fantastic week

Location, location. A perfect spot on the water, and near lots of local activities, and the big city of Brunswick (20 min drive). It's remote and private, yet you can walk to dinner. The house was as pictured, and being a former Maine resident, felt right at home for my family and I. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. It was quiet, nature abounds, and the ocean is directly out your window and doorstep. The owner is fantastic, always helpful with any questions we had. We were sad to leave after a week, and look forward to returning.

About the host

Hosted by Reid Greenberg

Host profile image
We split part of the year in our home state of Vermont with the Madison River Valley Lodge as much as possible to enjoy the unbelievable and wild beauty of Montana. We love to flyfish the Madison as well as hike up to the numerous remote lakes for cutties and golden trout or hike some of the towering peaks in the Madison Range. In the winter we ski on the property, head to West Yellowstone, or Wade Lake trails.

Why they chose this property

Our family of 5 are passionate about everything outside, especially in Big Sky Country. From fishing, boating, hiking, biking, camping, skiing, and wildlife viewing, this property and the surrounding area has it all. For the little ones or beginners, we can fish in the small trout ponds on the property while the adults wade or float the Madison. We are right on the banks of the world-famous, '50 mile riffle' which is the flyfishing Mecca. There is a launch site just downriver from us as well as several others close by. In the spring and fall we love seeing the elk migrate in large numbers right through our yard. In the winter we cross-country ski on trails at the ranch or in the park at W. Yellowstone and then downhill ski either at Big Sky or Grand Targhee. With Yellowstone so close, we have the opportunity to frequent the park during less popular times which makes for better wildlife viewing and adventures!

What makes this property unique

The house is extremely comfortable with all modern amenities but situated in part of the greater Yellowstone eco-system with wildlife viewing opportunities and lots of open space. The property offers private access to 4 miles of riverfront fishing on the Madison as well as on a tributary - Horse Creek - plus trout ponds.
