The property was beautiful and the house was clean and quaint. The animals were a lot of fun and my wife had THE BEST time. When the review says you need to be comfortable with the animals, you definitely do. They weren’t aggressive or anything but they were persistent, especially Roman the goat. I had to fight him a bit with an ice chest for the right to get in the porch My only suggestion is the gate to the porch needs to either swing in the other direction or there needs to be better footing around the base of it.
We had a wonderful, peaceful stay over the July 4th weekend. We brought our dogs and the property was close to Inks Lake State Park and Pedernales Falls State park for wonderful hiking. After meeting and becoming familiar with the horses, donkeys and goats the dogs were fine. It was very nice to have the fenced yard to let the dogs off lead safely.
From the perfectly decorated porch and interior, to the amazingly friendly farm animals, this property was exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful sunsets, star gazing, feeding the animals, and being located 15 mins from Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, and Johnson City, made this stay perfect. We will miss Milo (the super friendly bull) until we return.
Our stay was just the peaceful escape we were looking for. Our pups don't do fireworks and the ranch was the perfect place for them and us too. It was secluded enough for us, yet close enough to town for a dinner run if we desired. The accommodations were great and the added bonus of the farm animals was so fun! Dana and Shawn were very friendly and helpful.
This is the second mommy and me vacation I have taken here. My kids LOVE the animals. They are so friendly, there when you wake up, and there when you go to bed. My son loved Milo (gentle giant) and grew so attached to him that we had to go search for him after a rainstorm because my son wanted to make sure he didn't get hurt during the rain. The property is perfect for a quiet retreat. Any storm chasers out there would love this place. We were able to enjoy one of the coolest lightening storms of my life. You could see for miles as the storms rolled in and your view isn't blocked by things like it would be in the city. I will absolutely be returning in the future!
We had a great time at Salty Dog Ranch!
The home was super clean, cozy very well stocked. Our hosts were very nice and even came back with food for the animals so we can feed them.
We loved having the animals come by and visit us! This was a major highlight, definitely recommend!
We loved every minute of the most pleasant and relaxing vacation we’ve ever had. The cabin was very comfortable, even with our daughter and 3 grands spending two days with us. The animals were so much fun, and warmed up to us quickly. There were different areas outside to have a fire to sit around, or enjoy the sight and sounds from the porch/patio, and even have a meal out under the trees in the picnic area. We just can’t say enough about our week there…..it was wonderful and just what we needed to destress.

The cabin was perfect for our needs. It was even cuter in person, with many updates and well - equipped. My grandson enjoyed all the animals, and we enjoyed the fresh air and the fire pit!
This was an escape long weekend to slow down, relax, and recharge. This is said by two retired people! We have busy lives and live in a overgrowing part of Texas with too many newbies! The Salty Dog Ranch was a perfect country retreat for us!
From being greeted as we arrived to the great communication while staying, the owners were very hospitable. Great info at the cabin too about the animals and safety around them. The two horses, two donkeys, and bull made for very entertaining company on the ranch. The cabin was well equipped and we were able to catch a few Christmas movies as well using Netflix. I was able to cook breakfasts easily and did well with making black eyed peas and collard greens for New Year’s Day using my crockpot and the large pots in the kitchen! Kitchen also had cast iron skillet for the cornbread. You will enjoy the country vibe and down home feeling the cabin gives you inside and out! It says to you “make yourself at home, sit a spell, and hang out on the porch to watch the sunset!!”
You are about half way in between Marble Falls and Johnson City. Both places with interesting sights, restaurants, parks, and historical settings. There are lakes there but currently water levels are low. The cabin is in a great location and a long drive from big cities such as Austin and San Antonio.
The owners have set up the ranch so nicely and have really worked on many details to make it that great cabin in the country. Please pay attention to keeping your dogs on leash especially for their safety. My husband and I returned home rested and with great pictures of our dogs looking out windows at horses and running the fence line of the great yard area with one of the donkeys!! We recommend you get out to this country cabin and sit on the porch with a beverage of choice and breathe deeply while watching the sun slip behind the trees and hills!!
My family really enjoyed our stay at the Ranch. Animals were super friendly, house was clean and tidy, owners were great to work with, and the location was perfect.
Upon arriving the first evening, we were eagerly greeted by two friendly and curious Donkeys. The next morning we were greeted near the cabin's deck by the Donkeys and two of the three Horses. The owners provided Horse Treats for the guests to feed the friendly animals, which is a nice touch. The Cabin itself is very well appointed and decorated very comfortably. The cabin makes very good use of available space and is very clean, quiet, safe and the perfect country get-away spot. My spouse really appreciated the decorative touches throughout the cabin, which helped make the cabin feel warm and inviting. The protective enclosed pet yard was both necessary and appreciated. The owners have pretty much thought of everything on this property. We really enjoyed our stay at the Cabin on Salty Dog Ranch. We would happily book/stay another fantastic vacation for this amazing property which is perfectly situated between Marbke Falls and Johnson City in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.
The four legged hosts were very entertaining. The two legged host was very informative about the area, history and things to do. The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful.
My wife and I booked this property to celebrate my son's 1st birthday and to also take a mini vacation. We've always loved the Hill Country area and came across Salty Dog Ranch. What sold it to us were the animals and just the beautiful cabin. We were looking specifically for a two bedroom place so that our 1 year old can nap and not be disturbed. This cabin did the trick!
I was very impressed with the property and noticed that the Salty Dog Ranch team had done some upgrades from the pictures that I saw on the listing. I would say that the pictures on the listing do not do it justice. It was more beautiful in person.
There were also little things that made it even more hospitable such as the the property manager providing charcoal and lighter fluid, extra pantry items/food to cook, bathroom supplies, disposable plates and utensils, their own Hulu and Netflix accounts, and plenty of kitchen essentials. I know they are small things but it made our stay more personal and homey.
We did visit the nearby towns and ventured out, but we always could not wait to hangout with Milo, Daisy, and the gang at the end of the day. They were always stopping by our patio deck and seeking treats and someone to pet them.
What my family and I will miss the most is sitting out in the deck during the cool breeze of the morning/evening, all the animals, and star gazing.
Thank you Dana for sharing a little slice of ranch living.
I do agree with all the other reviews in that Dana is an excellent host and the pride that her, her family, and team for that ranch is noticeable as soon as you drive through the gate.
