Enjoy a quiet location close to town and on paved road. This property sits directly in between the towns of Hill City and Keystone! Have a cup of coffee on the front porch and watch the famous 1880's train roll past you a on its way to Keystone. Come evening have a seat and enjoy the wildlife in the meadow directly below you. Easily run into Hill City or Keystone for dinner or groceries or stay home and grill. A short car ride gets you to all of the major attractions including Mt Rushmore (20 minutes) & Crazy Horse (16 minutes) or go the other direction to Deerfield Lake for fishing and boating. The driveway is a little steep and I have had a few guests have concerns about riding motorcycles up and down. Once up the hill there is ample room to turn around a vehicle but I would recommend not taking your trailer to the top. If you do you will most likely be backing it down. There is however a nice flat spot at the bottom of the hill to park a trailer off the road in a safe location.
This Cabin is located in the middle of all the major attractions most of them being less than 30 minutes away.
If outdoor activity is more your style. There are 3 different lakes within 25 minutes or less, not to mention the the Mickelson Trail just a few minutes away with a trailhead in Hill City. Giving you access to 107 miles of biking and walking.
Hundreds of miles of ATV trails are surrounding this area. Less than a four mile drive gets you to ATV rentals and access to Horse back riding.
We can't wait to share our place with you and hope you fall in love with it like we have.

We loved staying here. The house was clean and matched the description of the property perfectly. We enjoyed being in the mountains and in the middle of all the sights we wanted to see. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Had a fabulous time with family. Spent the Thanksgiving weekend with family. Had everything we needed and more. Very clean! Great location. Will stay again.
This is a great property! Very quiet neighborhood and plenty of room inside and out for our party of 6. Everything was as described in the listing. We enjoyed the games and foosball table with the kids. Driveway is steep but not a problem for our minivan.
Simple, spacious, and quiet is how I'd describe our stay. Wish the tub would fill up faster in the master bathroom, but other than that this a great place to stay for families and everyone!
The location is so convenient for all Black Hills must-see spots. The house is wonderfully spacious with all the amenities we needed. We didn't cook much so not sure if there are enough cooking supplies. The only draw back is the driveway which is very steep and bumpy but that wouldn't keep us from staying here again next time we are in the area again.
We had an amazing time in the Black Hills and this house was centrally located to all the things we wanted to see. The driveway was steep but that didn’t cause us any problems. We found the house was perfect for two small families as the house was split with two bedrooms and one bathroom on one side of the house and a master bedroom/bathroom on the other. There are two dining room tables and two living rooms so we were able to spread out. Nothing but a positive experience here!
Perfect home to stay in while touring the Black Hills area. We had 4 children ages 3 - 9 and they loved the game tables. Sleeping arrangements were also perfect.
The property was perfect for our stay with family. If you have little toddlers though make sure they are watched 100%. The yard doesn’t have a fence in front and it drops off the bank a bit. Seeing the train go by was so fun for our son but everytime he thought he needed to run towards the drop off and give me a heart attack. Nothing bad happened but my anxiety was high. We had the best time and even played pool one night as a family. Very affordable and accommodating! Within close proximity of all the attractions and fun things to do in the black hills!
Due to unforeseen circumstances, only half of our large family group ended up staying at Whistle Stop Cabin. But the half that did were very happy with the house! They raved about the location saying how convenient it was to all the local sites-Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, etc. Brandon was very easy to reach and helpful with the few questions we had. Saw deer from the front porch and enjoyed watching the train go by. Our family definitely recommended this rental in the future.

Ok but not great
Unfortunately we had some issues during our stay and because of that I cannot recommend this property.
1. This is a barebones property with several basic items not available. For example, there is no laundry basket, no soap or shampoo in the bathrooms, limited utensils in the kitchen etc. we were not aware that soap was not available. You can tell not much thought has been put into what a potential guest might need.
2. Our kids saw a mouse in the property and that made the stay of our family uncomfortable. I spoke with the owner who was very responsive and sent the housekeeper to check on the mouse traps the next day who found a mouse in one of the traps. According to the owner, mice are common in black hills and sometimes they get in. I understand that but I have stayed at remote cabin in hills before and never had an issue. This may be a one off incident though so please take it with a grain of salt.
3. The biggest problem and something that needs to be immediately addressed is that we were not aware that the drive is at a significant slope and the asphalt on it in a bad shape. There are several large potholes on the drive way. We had a large and tall passenger van and were quite unstable going up and down. Moreover, when you reach the top, there is no easy way to turn a large vehicle around. It was dicey and I wish we knew the situation beforehand.
The owner is a nice guy and very responsive to our concerns with the mice. But the property needs updating.
The location was beautiful, right in the Black Hills, and the place had plenty of space for our group of six. The host was good with communicating and even let us check in a few hours early when we arrived on Thursday. We had planned to stay until Monday. Unfortunately, we had to check out early on Saturday morning due to a mouse problem in the rental, and VRBO and the owner refunded us for the time left of our booking. We reached out to the owner when we saw the first mouse, the first night we were there. He responded that his exterminator had just been there 2 days prior and had found no signs of mice, but we aren’t sure how the exterminator could have missed the signs-we have photos of droppings in various areas throughout the house, and of the 4 mice we saw in the day and a half that we were there. We understand that this is a rural location and sometimes mice happen, but with 3 young children in our group we just could not stay there any longer as we did not feel that the issue was under control.
We tried to spend as much time out and about as possible, but the house was a great resting spot. Great location to drive to Hill City, Keystone, and Rapid City and lots of great hiking nearby.
The two boys spent any of their time at the house playing foosball.
We stayed so we’d be close to Mt Rushmore for a visit but still have some quiet family time away from the tourist areas. This cabin was great! It had space, was very tidy and had all the amenities of home.
What a great time in Sourh Dakota! Cabin was clean, spacious and so comfortable. Excellent location, so close to everything. Excellent hosts as well. Will definitely be back!

This property was perfect for our "Cousin's Weekend" in the beautiful Black Hills! Everything you could want to do is just a short drive away, yet the cabin is remote enough that you still feel like you are getting away from it all. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. We mostly enjoyed the spacious living area (2 living rooms) and the large kitchen and dining space. Better than a hotel, by far!
