How do I get to the Vieux-Port by public transport from the Gare St Charles?
1/ On foot:
Just go down the main stairs of the station to Place des Marseillaises. Then it's straight ahead! Go down Boulevard d'Athènes, Boulevard Dugommier, and you'll arrive at La Canebière! If you turn right, you'll end up at the Old Port! If you decide to go straight ahead, you'll reach the Cours Julien district via Boulevard Garibaldi.
2/ By metro
Stay inside the station and go down to the 2nd basement level to metro line 1 towards La Fourragère, Vieux Port stop. You can choose to exit at the bottom of the Canebière or directly on the Vieux Port platform! You can find all the information you need about Marseille's public transport system on the RTM website.
If you are travelling to Marseille by road, you will probably take one of the three motorways that enter the city:
> The North motorway (A7) crosses the northern districts of the city and ends near the Marseille-Saint Charles railway station. This is the southern terminus of the major north-south road (connecting Lille to Marseille via Paris and Lyon). The A7 motorway also links Marseille to Nîmes, Montpellier and Toulouse (via the A9 and A54) and Aix-en-Provence, Gap and Grenoble (via the A51).
The Littoral motorway (A55) from Martigues runs along the port area before crossing the Joliette district via the footbridge and ending at the north-western end of the Vieux-Port.
The East motorway (A50) from Toulon crosses the eastern districts and ends at Menpenti.
The Prado-Carénage tunnel (toll) connects the A50 and A55 motorways. Exits available at ‘Vieux-Port’ and ‘la Major’.
The L2 ring road, open since the end of 2018, connects the A7 and A50.
