I wish I could have rated 3 1/2 stars. There is a sharp contrast in reviews, and to lend objectivity and reason to the average review-consumer, I wanted to be fair. It wasn't, by any means, misrepresented or otherwise bad, and at the same time, it isn't 5-star, Ritz-Carlton living. Folks, this is a great, family-owned, beach cottage designed for people who don't want to schlep their beach stuff miles away and (gasp!) come to Cape May to (a) enjoy proximity to the beach and (b) enjoy precious proximity to all the goings-on downtown. This place is perfect for someone who values both (a) and (b), isn't made of money, for whom all the Victorian niceties (read: worried you're going to break something) is wasted upon and -- and most importantly -- intends to spend very little time where they're sleeping.
Some negatives: (1) it doesn't have central air. If you're unlucky enough to be in Cape May when it's oppressively hot and humid, fear not! The window units more than suffice. And get over yourself -- this is a renovated stable. (2) it doesn't really have an outdoor shower. That would improve the place to be what it is, as beach-house has evolved. (3) it could benefit greatly from a paved driveway. Plus side -- off-street parking right downtown. (4) it could really use some landscaping. (5) it's dark inside.
Some positives: (1) it's clean. It is clear that the owners are focused upon ensuring guests enjoy a clean place. This is appreciated. (2) it's quaint. You're far enough from the hub-bub of the "drag," that you can get some sleep. (3) the price is right. Let's face it -- it's a jewel in this context; affordable, clean, tailor-made for a family intent to spend much time on the beach. (4) the owner is kind and affable. That is a plus; she has pride in the place, which means you do too. (5) (and the title of this review): location, location, location.
If you want a lawn (that you won't use) or more of a 1970's/1980's house (why?), then you'll pay more for what won't ultimately matter. This stable is timeless -- and by that I mean very little has changed, I'm sure, since the owners enjoyed this privately. Great, I say. The dishes don't match (who cares); the TV is old (so what) and they didn't pay thousands of dollars for the beds (no big deal). I'm glad we came here. Weigh the whiny reviewer's remarks for what they are. Enjoy an affordable beach vacation with your kids.
