Our Stay in the Stable was fabulous. We loved the everything about it.

We loved everything about it. The owner met us and showed us the stable. The character of the stable was outstanding, the photos were fabulous. The location was terrific, the porch was private. Barbara was a wonderful host. We cannot wait to return. Thank you so much for making our vacation a wonderful time.

Historic Stable

Property manager was very efficient and easy with whom to communicate. The “stable” was a historic gem……was perfectly situated near the beach, shopping, and restaurants. We will return next time if available. Thank you, Barbara S.

1 block from the beach, 2 blocks from Washington Street shops!

"The stable" as we called it, was a GREAT place to start and end each day. We would eat breakfast, plan our day, and then go off to the beach! We'd come back at the end of the day, put the kids to bed and unwind. An extra bonus was the patio - it's covered, so my partner and I were able to sit outside during a rainstorm in the evening and hang out and talk, with the baby monitor close by. The air conditioners were great, the one in the bedroom we slept in was so high powered we had to keep it at "low cool" and on a 5 out of 7 otherwise we'd be cold! The others weren't as high powered but did the job and everyone was comfortable sleeping without being sweaty. Because of our kids (2 and 5 years old), we prefer separate spaces, not a hotel room - if my 2 year old has a tantrum at 7 am I don't want to wake up the people in the rooms next to us! Another bonus was the shower - I love my showers, and the water pressure was great. That's not something I expected from a 2nd floor shower in a renovated stable, but it was awesome. The outdoor "shower" was also great - there's no privacy, but there's a spigot for feet only, as well as hot and cold for a shower outside. It's in the driveway, so we drove the car up the driveway (for privacy) and used it to wash our 5 year old after the beach so the sand didn't get everywhere. If what you want is a 5-star hotel experience, feel free to pay 2-4x as much for that - there are plenty of Hotels in Cape May. If what you want is a great place that's steps from almost anything you want to do, with off-street private parking, and an owner who is fair, kind and pleasant to chat with, you want to book this place!

A week to remember.

We will remember our week at the stable with fondness. We were a half block to the beach and a short walk to Congress Hall. We enjoyed sitting on the back porch each night catching up with family who we have not seen in a year. Thank you for sharing your property with us.

Renter Beware - high priced moldy, old and dingy

I have stayed in many VRBO and Its competitor listings over the years and this was by far and away the worst. Yes, this is a converted stable, but there have been no upgrades to this place for probably 75 years. Everything in the house, including the furniture, beds, pots, pans, and appliances are from the 1950’s. The air conditioners barely work and it feels like you are staying in a dungeon. I should have realized that the 15 air fresheners strategically located throughout the house were there for a reason. The owner of this house is definitely taking advantage of Covid by charging exceedingly high rates per night and misrepresenting the property. I would not have paid 1/4 of that price. Outside the driveway is overgrown with weeds, smells because garbage for 4 other units is 5 feet away and is infested with mosquitoes. The worst part was the mold. Mold was growing out of the air conditioners. We were so unhappy that we left a day early. You would think that at such a high price per day you would feel comfortable, but the owner doesn’t even provide standard TV. There is one upstairs that is 12 inches and one downstairs at 18 inches. The only nice thing was that the stable was a block from the beach which made it easy to get out of the house during the day. Bottom line— be very careful and know what you are getting into before booking this place.

I wish I could have rated 3 1/2 stars. There is a sharp contrast in reviews, and to lend objectivity and reason to the average review-consumer, I wanted to be fair. It wasn't, by any means, misrepresented or otherwise bad, and at the same time, it isn't 5-star, Ritz-Carlton living. Folks, this is a great, family-owned, beach cottage designed for people who don't want to schlep their beach stuff miles away and (gasp!) come to Cape May to (a) enjoy proximity to the beach and (b) enjoy precious proximity to all the goings-on downtown. This place is perfect for someone who values both (a) and (b), isn't made of money, for whom all the Victorian niceties (read: worried you're going to break something) is wasted upon and -- and most importantly -- intends to spend very little time where they're sleeping. Some negatives: (1) it doesn't have central air. If you're unlucky enough to be in Cape May when it's oppressively hot and humid, fear not! The window units more than suffice. And get over yourself -- this is a renovated stable. (2) it doesn't really have an outdoor shower. That would improve the place to be what it is, as beach-house has evolved. (3) it could benefit greatly from a paved driveway. Plus side -- off-street parking right downtown. (4) it could really use some landscaping. (5) it's dark inside. Some positives: (1) it's clean. It is clear that the owners are focused upon ensuring guests enjoy a clean place. This is appreciated. (2) it's quaint. You're far enough from the hub-bub of the "drag," that you can get some sleep. (3) the price is right. Let's face it -- it's a jewel in this context; affordable, clean, tailor-made for a family intent to spend much time on the beach. (4) the owner is kind and affable. That is a plus; she has pride in the place, which means you do too. (5) (and the title of this review): location, location, location. If you want a lawn (that you won't use) or more of a 1970's/1980's house (why?), then you'll pay more for what won't ultimately matter. This stable is timeless -- and by that I mean very little has changed, I'm sure, since the owners enjoyed this privately. Great, I say. The dishes don't match (who cares); the TV is old (so what) and they didn't pay thousands of dollars for the beds (no big deal). I'm glad we came here. Weigh the whiny reviewer's remarks for what they are. Enjoy an affordable beach vacation with your kids.

Our family and friends very much enjoyed their stay at the stables apartment. We love the history and architecture of Cape May and were looking for someplace convenient, private and unique. The stables met all of those requirements. It is a private cottage located less than a block from the beach, so close you don't have to wear shoes! The main historic district, shops and restaurants are within a couple blocks, which means there is plenty to do nearby, and you don't have to drive anywhere. The privacy of the cottage and shade on the back porch was especially nice. We spent a lot of time out back with our infant during the hottest part of the day. This was my favorite aspect of the place. We really liked the character of the converted stables. It still has the original stable doors, windows and stalls, and lots of antique horse related prints and decoration. We appreciated that the rustic character was maintained, it felt appropriate for Cape May. The apartment, kitchen and bathrooms had all the necessary amenities you'd expect in good working order. The steps up to the 2nd floor are a little steeper than normal, but weren't a problem for my wifes retirement age parents. I can honestly say we didn't use the downstairs living room once, but really enjoyed the upstairs family room, since it was spacious and informal. The owner, Barabara, was responsive and helpful. She is a great resource on the history and preservation of Cape . I thought the photos described the apartment very acurately. I'd recommend it to most of my friends; maybe not the high maintenance ones, but the ones who like memorable vacations and unique accomodations to go along with them.

Unique!

What an interesting, fun place to stay! I stayed with my husband for two nights - perfect location. We parked the car, and we didn't need it until it was time to leave. There is private, safe parking off the street. The stable is indeed one half block to the beach. It is right around the corner from Congress Hall. Walking distance to the center of town, shopping and restaurants. And, it is a stable!! It still looks like a stable. A stable with a full kitchen. We didn't cook. But, I used the coffee maker in the morning. There is a grill on the porch too. Half the fun of staying here was exploring the rooms. In addition to the kitchen, downstairs, there is a dining area and living room. Downstairs is not air conditioned, but we opened the windows and enjoyed the breeze. Upstairs is air conditioned. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, there isn't a picture of it on the website. One with two single beds, and a sitting room. Barbara will tell you to bring your own towels, and sheets. I would bring pillows and a blanket too. Ask Barbara about the history of the house. She is a font of interesting information. Her family has owned the property for five generations. We loved our stay here and look forward to returning!!

lesson learned

I've had many great experiences renting houses from VRBO but this particular instance was a nightmare. You read "one block from the beach" and think "this will be great, who cares what it's like inside, we'll be outside the whole day anyway". It was depressing to have to go back to this house at the end of a day. It's a former stable, that is clear, but what isn't clear from the photos or description is that because it's a stable it is so dark inside that you need to put the lights on when it is full sunshine outside at 2pm. Notice the photos were taken while it was sunny out and the lights are all turned on. The house is clean, no dust or dirt, and while I appreciate antique furnishings I don't want a vintage mattress. The advertised "air conditioners" barely deliver cool air (two total for the house, one in a bedroom - one in a sitting room) and you will sacrifice the that small comfort to turn them off because they are so loud with popping noises. The stairs are treacherous (watch your head on the overhang) and need the weak fluorescent light at the bottom on even in broad daylight. The layout of the house isn't very accommodating for more than two people. You'll know it's not the typical rental when you are given the key to the padlock that locks the front door...yes, a Master Lock padlock. If you want to open the windows that requires unhooking the latch and physically taking them out of the frames. We paid more than the average rate for the week in Cape May during this part of the season and ended up moving (at an additional cost of $500) for the last three nights to a hotel. We spoke to the owner about our experience during our stay, and afterward, and she didn't feel the need to make any compensation. I have never taken the time to write a negative review for anything, I only hope I'm sparing someone else the disappointment.
