About this property

Dreamy Maine Island Near Acadia: Explore Mt. Desert

4th of July week SPECIAL. Special rate due to late cancellation. Here's your 2023 family , friends or couples vacation or remote-work spot. The Sea Glass House, my vintage 1892 Victorian full of stained glass windows and sea breezes, is a great base for exploring Mt. Desert, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. The house has all modern amenities and vintage charm on one of Maine’s last unbridged, year-round inhabited islands. There’s plenty of room to hang out with family and friends or tuck away for a nap or a long read.

The island is an unbridged island only reached by a 20-minute ride on the mailboat (leave your vehicle in Northeast Harbor, on Mt. Desert Island), so you'll truly be away from it all. Yet you'll be at the center of a busy island community, where work centers on the lobster co-op and welcoming seasonal visitors and guests. If you've forgotten something, you can pick up basics at the seasonal lobster co-op shop or order from a shop on Mt Desert for delivery via mailboat. The mailboat schedule makes off-island trips to explore Acadia National Park or for a lunch in Bar Harbor easy and scenic.

The house is an easy drive from metropolitan Boston or New York or a quick flight (to Bangor or Bar Harbor) from either.

The mailboat runs 6xdaily in the summer; 4xdaily in the spring and fall. A parking space for your car in Northeast Harbor is included in the rental fee; the mailboat ticket price is not included in the rental fee. Check out the Beal&Bunker site for the most up-to-date fees and schedules

The island was listed among 'The Best Secret Islands on Earth' by Travel & Leisure magazine and has been lauded by Martha Stewart, Rockefellers and generations of artists, writers and vacationers. The house was built by the island's merchant family and is embellished with original woodwork and other architectural treats that reveal the island's history. It's of course outfitted with 21st-century comforts, including WiFi, comfy beds and luxe linens and a cook's kitchen. A well-stocked library and puzzles and games help fill evenings and rainy days. Beaches and fantastic views are 5-10 minutes in any direction.
Amenities on the island include:

# A fine little library (wireless access, a good collection of modern literature and childrens' books as well as videos/DVD)
# A much-lauded restaurant, The Dock, which attracts visitors from the region
# An artists' gallery, gallery of sea glass creations and a potter's studio and store
# A gift store, Winter's Work
# A post office and school (with playground)
# The Neighborhood House, host to movie nights, readings and other social gatherings
# Two churches
# Boatworks, a not-for-profit that runs summer boat-building classes for children
# A yacht club (in name only) that offers lessons for adults and children
# Access to daily grocery delivery

What to do on an island?: -- The wonders of Acadia National Park are 20 minutes away, on Mt. Desert Island. Take an early mailboat and spend the day hiking or biking or horseback riding, or just drive up Cadillac Mountain, take in the view, and then have popovers and lemonade at Jordan Pond House.
-- Numerous small museums and galleries dot Mt. Desert, as do various gardens open to visitors. There's a muasuem on Islesford plus several galleries.
-- If you must, go to Bar Harbor and buy fudge and t-shirts. You'll be delighted that you can take the 6 pm boat back to the idyllic Islesford.
-- If antiques and/or rummage sales are your thing, there's plenty of opportunity on Mt. Desert and on the mainland.
-- Walk around the island, collecting rocks and shells and amazing views along the way. Don't forget a snack.
-- Walk out to Bakers Island on the sandbar.

Week at sea glass house

We had a wonderful time, the house was exactly as advertised and an absolute delight. We felt like we had stepped into a paradise. The island is so quiet, perfect for exploring the coast and reconnecting with each other. We have 4 children ages 16-8 and we all had an absolutely wonderful time.

Wonderful place on an amazing island!

This was our second time at this home and we truly enjoyed it. The house is clean, spacious, and up to date. The rooms are so unique and the stain glass windows are beautiful. We love having the playground so close by for our kids and everything is a short walk away. Sitting on the porch every day is great! Everyone on the island is so friendly. Thanks again for a lovely time.

House was amazing!

The house was wonderful! It was a great family vacation and we already miss Maine and the house! I can't think of anything that could have made it better. Out two daughters, age 3 and 6, keep saying that can't wait to go back! The super house was clean and each room had its own charm. We enjoyed cooking in the nice kitchen, grilling on the beautiful porch, and reading in the downstairs reading room. We could not have asked for a better vacation home!

Seaglass House

What a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. All of the amenities in the house are functional, the beds are very comfortable and the kitchen well laid out and stocked. There were too many positives to list so I emphasize that the following minor issues were not serious and in no way impacted our overall experience which was fabulous - even my 12 and 16 year olds settled quickly into a relaxed rhythm. As with seemingly all rentals, if dull kitchen knives bother you, bring your own. The Dock restaurant has a fabulous ambience and is really fun, but the advice to get reservations should be taken seriously and the food was only so so. Mosquitos are small, but very abundant so bring repellant. Again, a beautiful and unique place to stay.

Magical island!

Wonderful Victorian home in the center of Little Cranberry island. Pros: Home is well appointed and spacious, and the island is fantastic!! Very close to the beauty and wonder of Acadia, and the island is a highlight in its own right. Cons: Property manager is very difficult to get a hold of, despite multiple attempts. Also seems to scream at tenants through all caps emails and make threats about not being able to stay there. Quite off-putting and added unnecessary stress to vacation. Owner is lovely and responsive but far away, so just have to go expecting to be on your own a bit. Trippy to follow the island waste policy but its what the islanders do!

Love for a Maine island

Our week on Little Cranberry Island was just what our family needed. Time to sleep, bake, eat, read, play games, do a puzzle, walk, bike, explore, remember, and make new memories. We saw a bald eagle on Maypole Point! The Sea Glass House has lots of space to disperse for private, quiet time, but also great places to gather. We had fun looking at island history sprinkled throughout the house. Enjoyed the many outdoor spaces to watch the comings and goings on a small island. The first floor den with a pull out bed, and bath was helpful for my elder parents. The kitchen was very well equipped! Josephine was easily available via email. Melissa transported us to and from the mailboat, helping us will ALL our baggage. She and Jim were available, patient and prompt to aid us if needed. The Sea Glass House is a great place to relax and connect with family .

What a memorable place for a family vacation!

I think we found a hidden gem with this home. The location was so much fun. It caused one to slow down and just want to experience the island life and beaches. My kids (7, 5, 2) and husband came home with many treasures from their walks on the beaches. The kids had a fun time at the playground and with the local kids playing a nightly game of manhunt. They slept well after all the fresh air and exploring! The house was also equipped to keep kids busy and adults busy on rainy days (toys, puzzles, books). We did spend one day off the island exploring Acadia. But, make sure to tell the mailboat you are renting for a week to get a better rate on tickets. :) Melissa was a great host on the island and everyone we met there was so friendly and helpful. Make sure you stop in and see the sea glass art bu Ashley Bryan at the church. It was so beautiful. My only downside was I had to deal with my allergies (they may have been because of an old house, animals, and/or seasonal). I didn't let that stop me from enjoying the vacation though and I would totally recommend this home to anyone. (But if you deal with allergies just make sure to pack your medicine.) I hope to be back someday.

The heart of Isleford

We stayed in the Sea Glass house for 5 weeks in late May through June of last year and it was an experience our family of 7 will never forget. Our boys were begging to go back to the island the second we left. Our first day was Memorial day and were immediately invited to the town "parade" which consisted of everyone (about 20 folks, including our 7) walking together to each 3 cemeteries on the island to pay respect to all the islanders who'd served our country. We knew from this moment that we'd found a very special place. There is a lot to love about the Sea Glass House; the location, the decor and history, amenities, the community, and a very thoughtful host, Josephine. The property is located right in the middle of "town" across from the Post office and school. It was incredibly convenient for our boys to hop across to the playground or to go hang out with "Zip Code" the cat at the post office. Be sure to get to know Joy, the postmaster, who lives up to her name sake. It's an easy walk to the dock, or basically any other beach of the island. One highlight was our daily walk to the water to feed the seagulls our table scraps (a welcomed rule of the eco-friendly island.) The house itself is is a beautiful Victorian, steeped with history inside and out. Pick from a library of books about Islesford, Maine, or the artists of the community. The top house amenities for us were the bikes, hand cart and wrap-around porch. The high speed internet, washer and dryer, and dishwasher were also great. Josephine provided plenty cleaning supplies and laundry detergent. I could write another 15 paragraphs about the community of Islesford but really you have to experience it for yourself. It's a welcoming, hard-working, close-nit community, who happen to live in one of the most beautiful places we've ever visited. Despite being out of the country during our visit, Josephine was very attentive to our needs and was great with communication. Thank you Josephine and Islesford!

What Memories!!

My three granddaughters 5, 11 and 13) and I spent five days in the Sea Glass House. What memories! The house had everything we needed and more. Lots of room to relax. Very comfortable beds. I was amazed at how many things we found to explore on the Island… beaches, restaurant, fresh lobsters, library, museum, pottery shop. Everyone was so nice. The kids enjoyed the playground and rock hunting on the beach. We took the mailboat(free ride) to Great Cranberry Island one day for the Ladies Aide Society’s fair. The process of schlepping our stuff was much easier than I thought it would be. Unloaded on the dock on the mainland and Melissa was waiting for us on arrival. She was a great source of information and a big help. Very special house in a unique setting for an amazing adventure.

Magical

Our stay at Seaglass House was absolutely lovely! Everything is better than pictured. Immaculately clean, homey, beautiful and perfectly located. Jim & Melissa, the house managers, were super responsive and caring when we had a question or two. It was a beautiful experience we’d love to repeat if we are ever fortunate enough to do so!

What a find!

We were looking for a place to stay as we explored Acadia; we lucked into an absolute gem with the Sea Glass House, a large, 100+ year old home on Little Cranberry Island. As a base for exploring the park, it was perfect for us; there is a ferry which makes trips to and from Mount Desert Island multiple times per day. The house itself was lovely, and well-appointed. With multiple porches, decks and sitting areas, our family felt very, very comfortable there. The house was clean, spacious, and charming, and the island itself was wonderful. Melissa and Jim, the caretakers for the property, were warm, so kind, and made sure we had whatever we needed. Josephine, the property owner, furnished us with a welcome packet well in advance of our trip, containing all kinds of tips and advice for our stay. We loved the island, we loved the house, and we are so very grateful to the folks who made our stay so memorable. We hope to return in the future!

Another magical week

Our second year in a row at Seaglass House! It was amazing-beautiful weather, relaxing, and rejuvenating. We enjoyed the bikes, the stars, fireflies, beaches, glass and rock hunting. Fresh seafood...lobster as sweet as can be! Josephine’s home has everything you could possibly need...it was almost like “coming home” this year. We’ll be back again...highly recommended if you want to relax...go back in time....reconnect...let each day unfold as you discover new treasures daily! Visit the PO and say hello to Joy and zip code the cat, fresh lobster down by the dock. The porch was a favorite place to read and have drinks before dinner. You do need to plan-bring your food/drinks, but know there is a little shop on the dock that has a great selection if you forgot something....take the mailboat and bikes to Big Cranberry and explore the multiple beaches and then grab a treat at the little restaurant or general store. Easy access to Bar Harbor and Acadia via the mailboat back to BE Harbor... ...you must see Acadia...beautiful! Sand Beach a must...You will not regret your time spent on Little Cranberry...go!!😊☀️🦞😊

Our Happiest Place

We love, love, love the Seaglass House and have visited for the second year in a row. Every little detail is perfect--from the fresh wildflowers in a vase on arrival to a well-equipped kitchen (Kitchenaid mixer, homemade pasta machine, and so much more!!), to all the hundreds of books to browse, the garden, the sea breezes in the windows, the delightful neighbors, the proximity to the playground and library for the kids to play at, etc, etc etc. I could go on and on about how much I love this home and this island, but suffice it to say that I would 100% recommend the experience to anyone.

Cozy on Cranberry

Charming house, full of history, art, shells and everything you need for a perfect stay at Little Cranberry Island. We loved every minute and hated to leave. Lots of room and the porches are sublime. Not like new, so don’t expect perfection. Only flaw in our experience was the dishwasher not working.

We have fallen in love with the area, the island, the waters, and especially Sea Glass House. We hope to be back, and we will never forget this home as our most peaceful, lovely vacation. A true oasis. Owner was not in the area during our visit but local property manager was helpful and accessible. Home and kitchen are well-equipped. Porch is lovely, but mosquitos are fierce. Thank you Josephine, for a lovely home. Thank you, Islesford, for a lovely community.

An incredible house on an incredible island

We loved every second of our stay at the house on Little Cranberry Island. The house is an old charming Victorian with a wonderful lived-in family feel. We felt at easy instantly. Josephine couldn't have been a more generous host and was very accommodating when our first schedule night was postponed by a big storm and power cut. We loved everything about the island... wandering the beaches with our kids and not another person in sight all day long... buying 2 lobsters for 20 dollars fresh off the boat... cycling the paths on the bikes that come with the house... and cooking blueberry pancakes in the wonderful kitchen. Thank you. We are home but long to be back on Little Cranberry.
