About this property

Lake Superior Tri-level: Spacious 4bed/2ba cabin on 8 acres & Finnish sauna

Detroit Zen Center monks & students use this hermitage for retreats half the year, and rent to guests the other half. Our hermitage has a tri-level floor plan, and sits 100 yards from Lake Superior, with a 100 yard circular walking path down to 360' of her shoreline (pebbles & rocks). Set on 8 rolling acres of wooded land, 2 woodstoves we have a traditional Finnish wood-fired Sauna just behind the main cabin. The property sits 1/4 mile from the entrance to Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park.

Entering off the main road, down a 1/4 mile wooded drive, to park in front of the large tongue-and-groove hand-milled home, with a friendly front porch with a stone chimney, chairs & lots of wood! Enter into a light-filled, spacious, open concept main living area - living - dining room - kitchen. It includes a woodstove, wood floors, stone chimney, smart tv, surrounded by huge windows & a wall of sliding glass doors going out to a deck that looks down to the lake & the walking paths. The dining table seats 8. At the back of the main floor is a master bedroom with its own stone chimney & woodstove, as well as a large picture window overlooking the land. Just outside the master bedroom is a full, marble tiled bathroom.

Upstairs is a loft bedroom, with a private bedroom with its own large deck adjacent. The loft has a full bed with an antique desk & walk in closet. The adjacent fully enclosed bedroom has a king sized and a full sized bed, and a large deck.

Downstairs is a lower level walkout -- a standalone space with a sitting room, bedroom, and full bathroom, as well as a separate entrance door that leads to a deck, the walking trails & lake.

The heating system is very efficient & radiant (no furnace or forced air noise/dust), and we are very well insulated -- the 2 woodstoves add charm & coziness in winter. In summer, the lake keeps us cool, but we do have AC here as well.

Our road leads to the Lake of the Clouds, and is within minutes of endless hiking, cross country trails, waterfalls, & 2 miles from the Porcupine Mountain Downhill Ski Resort. Our hermitage is set 1/4 mile down a driveway, away from the main road, and is very quiet, and very private. Our land is filled with old-growth hemlock, oak, maple, cedar & pine. Deer & turkey & other wildlife are abundant. We enjoy exploring all the area has to offer, and it truly is like heaven on earth here.

We have high speed wifi, and use it for our phone service (cell service is spotty up here). We have a smart tv with Roku, and you can use netflix, hbo, fox sports, tcm, and much more. Our shoreline is lovely and rocky -- 1/4 west is an endless sandy beach as well. The historic mining town of Ontonagon is 12 miles east (15 minutes), where you can find an IGA grocery store, hospital, & full amenities. We are just outside Ontonagon in Silver City, where there is an Americinn Hotel 1 mile away, with a full bar & menu, or try Konteka -- a bowling alley & full restaurant 6 miles away in White Pine.

Perfect Winter Oasis

Took a group of guys up North for a Winter Getaway. The house is perfect for a large group. Kitchen is nicely appointed and labeled. The driveway was plowed and ready for our arrival. Communication was excellent with the owner. Overall, a great experience.

Relax on Lake Superior

This Lake Superior cabin was fully stocked and had plenty of room for our family of 6. Close to our desired location of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park for hiking. Enjoyed being able to watch the sunset on our own private area of Lake Superior. The sauna was a plus after hiking! of Lake Superior.

Beautiful location

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hermitage home. The location, views and home was absolutely perfect for our family. We made a couple campfires by the lake, kayaked and used the sauna several times. The Hermitage is such a unique location and is such a peaceful setting for anyone. We hope to be back sometime with our family.

Excellent all around!!

Beautiful location, this cannot be emphasized enough! You get your own little piece of private shore on the Gitchegumee ~100 yards from the cabin! Also - and I can't emphasize this enough either - Emju was SO welcoming and communicative throughout! Not too much at all, just enough! We were all very happy!!!

Weekend Getaway

We only wish we could have stayed longer. The home is absolutely beautiful and welcoming. It truly felt like we were treating ourselves to a true getaway, with the added luxury of having the most thoughtful and truly accommodating touches at hand. We arrived and left wishing that someday we could have something just like it…or be able to find more available dates to stay! Honestly, we can’t say enough about how attentive and kind our host, Emju was or how wonderful the stay was.

What a great place

We wanted a place near Lake Superior, and boy did this place fit that desire. You can see the lake down through a short path. At the end of the path, you'll find a firepit, kayaks, and plenty of seating. The house was clean, and the kitchen was stocked well for cooking utensils. It was incredibly quiet at the house, mostly birds and the waves. The host was extremely communicative and wanted to ensure we had everything we needed. We even used the swinging grill over the firepit on the side of the house. It's perhaps a 15 minute drive from Lake of the Clouds (you could even bike up there if you wanted), and about 15 minutes from Ontonagon if you need a proper grocer. Caveats for guests would be to make sure you have bug spray, and maybe some warmer clothes for cool evenings to be outside. You can swim from the shore, but you may want water socks to walk on the rocks below the water line as they're a bit slippery until you can get to a good depth. There are sand beaches in either direction nearby. As for the accuracy of the listing, I may not have properly understood the layout of the BRs. Nothing wrong for our party, just wasn't what I'd envisioned after reading the description. I think everyone in our party would be happy to go back. Thanks again!

Family plus dog all loved the cabin!

Clean, well organized and had everything we needed. Didnt even realize there were bikes, kayaks and a horseshoe pit! The property was beautiful, we came up in late June and the bugs werent terrible depending on where you stood. The sauna was a great way to relax at night after hiking, and lots of fireflies on the road. Very well located, we visited a dozen places and the furthest was presque isle at 30 min. The host was great, very responsive and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended!

Great Escape

The property is beautiful and well kept. One of the cleanest VRBO's we've stayed at before which was super nice and appreciated. We had a group of adults, that included family and friends. They all loved it and found something special. The water was beautiful and really enjoyable at night with a campfire. We had one nearly every night. Additionally, this is a great location to hit up a ton of the UP's waterfalls as well. There are so many that are within an hours drive. Our groups favorite ended up being Bonanza falls which was 2 miles away. As with any remote location in the UP. Bring bugspray, check for ticks and prepare for black flys if they are in season. That's not anything a rental can control but even here they provide mosquito gear to help out which is a nice gesture. :)

Beautiful home on beautiful property

Super thankful I had the opportunity to stay in this home. It was plenty spacious for our group and very well stocked. I also appreciated how well labeled everything was. Mosquitoes can be bad in June but it all depends on the day and the area, down by the lake with a south wind you stay big free, otherwise use bug spray and head nets. We had some great hikes in the nearby Porcupine Mountains and a nice place to trail run on a loop was the Union Mine trail, it’s only a mile but fun ti do both directions. Bonanza Falls is amazing too! Lovely area and host was very responsive and kind! Appreciate it!

Lake Superior views and access, right next to the Porcupine Mountains!!!!

We had 4 adults and 3 kids on our vacation staying in the house. We had plenty of room for everyone. We enjoyed the large table and plenty of seating in the living room. Our favorite was the view of Lake Superior from the house and the seating and firepit down by the water for our own private fires and sunset viewing. The large porches were also very nice. It was great to be a few minutes from the Porcupine Mountains and our favorite beach. We also were within 30 minutes of Adventure Mine, old Victoria and Ontonagon (15min) for more activities and eating options. The Squeeze On Main was our favorite and had produce and local meat as well as good food and smoothies.

Perfect location for the Porcupine’s!

The host description of the property is spot on! Very comfortable open area for the kitchen, family room and a massive dining room table. Very well marked and stocked kitchen, plenty of pots and pans for home cooking. Plenty of places to sleep if you have a large gathering. They have a nice setup by the lake, we enjoyed a fire and then watched the stars come out. Very relaxing. Be aware that the shoreline is rocky and not sand, I would not let small children play there. However a very short drive up the road you have a wonderful sandy area for playing and swimming. Emju is a pleasure to work with, very responsive and knows the area well. We were all very satisfied with this stay,

Peaceful, dog friendly hideaway close to Porcupine Mountains

We were looking for a house on the water with space for our dogs to run off-leash and in close proximity to Porcupine Mountains. This property was exactly what we hoped for. The house was clean, the views of the water and sunsets were breathtaking, and it is away from everything! It was a 15-20 minute drive into Ontonagon for coffee at Connie’s. There are only a few places to dine there, but Syl’s had delicious food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. UP North Cafe had delicious wraps and sandwiches. There is a Dollar General and small grocery store in town also. Porcupine Mountains was amazing. We recommend the Escarpment Trail with views of Lake of the Clouds and the Lake Superior Trail which leads to the shoreline. It was an amazing trip. We would highly recommend this property and location!

Spacious, well maintained and great host!

We had 2 families stay here and there was more than enough room. The pictures of the interior don't do it justice! The kitchen had plenty to work with, there were ample towels/linens and such comfy seating. We had a day where it got above 90 and the AC's worked great. Host was AMAZING to work with and quicky responded and resolved all questions/issues. The views and privacy were all wonderful. As is normal for the summer by Lake Superior, there are a lot of mosquitoes and flies...they supplied a bottle of bug spray and even some head nets and they were all used. Some days were buggier than others and it is hard to keep them from getting inside at times, but I think they have done what they can to minimize it.

Great Retreat

We planned a family retreat that expanded from an original plan of 4 people to include 2 grandparents and 2 "extra" teenagers. 8 people under one roof and everyone had plenty of space. This place is BIG - lots of space inside and outside. This is also by far the most well stocked property I have ever rented. Our host was extremely responsive. The wi-fi was great but outside of the property forget about cell service. That is not a bad thing as it kept phone obsessed teenagers off of their phones and actually paying attention to the beautiful nature all around them. The area is remote so plan on outdoor activities in the Porcupine mountains or on Lake Superior or just chill out on the property.

The house and property were great. Lots of outdoor spaces & seating by the lake too. We were lucky that we had all sunny days and it being in early June we liked the cooler weather also. We hiked the porcupine mountains, visited local beaches & had Pasties in Houlton. view a couple of waterfalls up close. And all the drives were very scenic too.

About the host

Hosted by Emju Hillary

Host profile image
We are monks & students of the Detroit Zen Center, and live here half the year. The other half we live & teach meditation in Detroit. Our Abbot is 81 years old, of Finnish heritage, so living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan half the year is just perfect for him (the traditional Finnish sauna helps, too!). Many students & friends of our Zen Center retreat here, and we welcome guests to enjoy it other times, which helps with operating expenses. We appreciate the land and the area immensely up here, and are happy to share it with like-minded folks.

Why they chose this property

The land is just beautiful, the location ideal, and Lake Superior is the most powerful force we have met. Here, in the wilderness, nature is in charge, and is a perfect setting to relax, recharge & reconnect with the miracle of life. Our location is ideal, and is whey we chose this place for our retreat center after looking for years.

What makes this property unique

The woodstoves & wood-fired sauna are very special, as is the land itself and the openness of the space. Many people can be here without being right on top of one another, which is a great feature.
