About this property

📍Historic Mitchell House 1928 River View & Gardens

Welcome to the Wheeler Mitchell House

Nestled in the Don Juan Filhoil Historic District, the Wheeler Mitchell House sits right across from the Ouachita River, offering a peaceful retreat steeped in history. Originally part of a homestead dating back to the early 1800s, this home was built in 1928 by one of the homestead owner’s sons. While the original homestead house no longer stands, the property retains its majestic oak trees, lively squirrels, and Southern charm.

Built before the levee was constructed, this home once stood along what was called South Beverport Street. Though it has been remodeled to include modern comforts, the original hardwood floors, doors, and woodwork remain, preserving its timeless character. The landscaping is mature and well-maintained, while the bathroom blends contemporary updates with classic charm.

With a new HVAC system, high-speed Wi-Fi, and memory foam beds, the home offers a comfortable and nostalgic atmosphere, reminiscent of grandparents’ houses, especially with its classic kitchen design.

Cute home

It would be nice if the porch light was left on and the house nights be lite since we arrived late. We had a difficult time finding the correct door and no light to get out the key. Departing instructions should be included in the rules and the information on getting hot water when taking a shower.

Monroe Trip

This house was perfect for our trip to Monroe. As the other reviews stated, don't let the neighborhood keep you from booking this house. The house is adorable and spotlessly clean. It had everything we needed and more. Chris answered every question we had and even recommended Trapp's Restaurant, which was just down the street. They had an outside deck overlooking the river and the food was amazing. Would definitely stay there again.

Visit back home

We loved the Mitchell House. My husband grew up in one of the neighborhoods behind the levee (It was a nice area when he was younger and is coming back around). We we’re able to walk to the local brewery and our favorite restaurant. We also went for evening walks to Lazar Park. The house was a perfect location. We rented a house but spent the majority of our time on the screened in porch. The home was beautifully decorated and clean. We will definitely be back to this home. Thank you for sharing it.

Excellent Home

In truthfulness, when I got off the interstate, I was very skeptical about the location. But I stayed here for 4 nights and it was AWESOME, quiet, clean, I was able to work and pray with zero disruptions. Access to the levy so I could walk and think was awesome as well.

Quant vintage home!

This was such a beautiful home. All the appliances and electronics worked well. The bath was beautiful, very large and clean. The home was well stocked and had nice appliances. This was so much better than any hotel!! Loved the hardwood floors and all the other vintage touches to the home. The host was super accommodating. We would definitely stay here again!

The property is charming. I grew up in WM and didn't know of the house. The owner has done an amazing job of remodeling. All was very updated and comfortable. Beds were extremely comfortable. House was immaculate. Two things to consider but they are not biggies: some steps for the back bedroom bed would be nice and more mirrors. Since there's only one bath, more mirrors will allow prep time elsewhere. We did use the mirror in the formal dining room but no electrical outlets were there. The owner communicated and was very attentive. We felt safe. We would go back, and it will be excellent for us when we go in to visit with family who are still in the area.

This a very quiet area. We really liked that it was so close to everything. Our dog loves the big back yard as she sniffed and played most of the day.

Cute Historic Home

This is a cute little house with a front porch and backyard for visiting. Located right down the road from Antique Alley and a public.park. neighborhood behind the home is not great but no problems with direct neighbors. Home is very comfortable. Would highly recommend.

Beautiful screened in front porch

House and property were very nice. The bed is very comfortable. Nice fenced in back yard with uncovered patio. Property in good proximity to bridge into Monroe, but on the edge of old neighborhood. Nice house next door and pretty property on the other side with lots of privacy. Beautiful screened in porch but do know there is no view of river because of levee. Owner fabulous to work with.
