About this property

Stay minutes from the slopes and book your Spring skiing trip today!

Your Spring 2025 ski holiday awaits in the heart of Olympic Valley and the base of Palisades ski area. This wonderful, Norwegian style “Hytte” (or cabin), is the perfect place for a family getaway during the Winter or Summer! This is one of Squaw Valley's (Olympic Valley) original homes built for the Olympic Games in 1960, and is located in the heart of the Valley and minutes from the ski lifts and other outdoor activity.

Location is everything at Lake Tahoe! Our cabin is located strategically in the heart of Olympic Valley, literally minutes from the base of the ski hill. Once here, you won't have to deal with the substantial traffic that can often times cause 1-2 hour delays during the Winter just to get to Truckee or Tahoe City. So after your ski day, just kick off your skis and grab your favorite beverage in front of our cozy fireplace. You're already home!

The house has been beautifully updated, with spectacular, panoramic views of both the meadow and ski hill from the living areas and a huge, wraparound deck. The living area has beautiful, two-story glass panes that enhance the view, high ceilings and lots of seating all centered around a cozy, rock fireplace.

This mountain cabin is fully equipped with four bedrooms (one open loft), two full bathrooms, nicely updated kitchen with new appliances, laundry room, and a sound-proof TV room. Sleeps eleven (11) with two private rooms with King beds, one room with 4 bunk beds, and an open loft with a bunk bed and a twin.

The cabin has four (4) off street parking spaces for your convenience.

Enjoy the red cedar Norwegian Sauna during your visit. During the Winter, test your inner Scandinavian by cooling off in the snow just outside the sauna door for some added excitement!

During the Winter, the new base to base Gondola is open that connects Palisades to the Alpine Meadows Ski Area next door. Free shuttle to ski hill via "Mountaineer" shuttle service. Book thru "Mountaineer APP" via app store on your cell phone. No need to leave the Valley and deal with all the traffic! You're already there!

In summer you can enjoy the wonderful hikes close to the cabin, take a leisurely ride up the majestic Truckee River bike bath to Lake Tahoe, or wander down to the new Village at Palisades Tahoe for your morning coffee or to explore all the wonderful new shops and fine restaurants.

Mountain bikers will enjoy the many trails around Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe, and golfers have the ultimate challenge with Squaw's Robert Trent Jones-designed 'links' golf course right outside your door!

Olympic Valley/Palisades Tahoe is located just 45 minutes from Reno International Airport, and it’s approximately a 3.5 hour easy drive from San Francisco. The cabin is a beautiful six-mile drive or bike ride to the west shore of Lake Tahoe.

Fabulous, unique ski rental

We had an incredible ski week at Eric’s home! The location truly can’t be beat (just a 2 minute drive to Palisades Village), but what we really enjoyed was staying in such a unique home full of character and family history. The well appointed kitchen, the sauna, the cozy living room and gorgeous views of the mountain made for a super relaxing stay. Hands down our favorite of many Tahoe rentals we’ve stayed in…we hope to be back next year!

A true ski chalet

Feels like you are ski touring in Europe. Amazing house with amazing history. Free easy shuttle to pallisades, so you don’t have to deal with the parking. Erik was the best host I have ever experienced. So kind, thoughtful, and gregarious. Hope to stay again. Thanks Erik!

Great location, beautiful views

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this Norweigan-inspired home that features a wonderful sauna to help warm you up after a long day enjoying the slopes. It's a great location (free transportation to the ski area) and plenty of room for the entire family.

Enjoyable stay in a great spot close to the slopes

The cabin was a perfect spot for our group of six (two kids, two parents, two grandparents). Eric was very helpful and communicative. The living area was comfortable and the kitchen was well-appointed, which worked out well for us to cook our meals during our stay. Thanks!

Great house

Lanny drive is in a great location to the village, Truckee River, & Lake Tahoe! We loved that the house was the second to be built in the valley, but with modern updates!

Really enjoyed our stay

Our family had a lovely time at the ski chalet for a week in February. The views out of the living room are so great, especially with a roaring fire and snow falling outside. The kitchen is well stocked, we cooked every night but one where we went out for dinner. Children loved the ring toss game and all the fun board games and bunkbeds that every ski house should have. Getting to/from the resort is easy via the Mountaineer service which is free and door-to-door. For bookings with multiple families, there are plenty of beds but the size/layout of the house make it best enjoyed with families that are comfortable with each other.

Great location for access to Palisades

The house is very well located, a few minutes drive from Palisades. It is spacious and well stocked. We got very unlucky as the house ran out of gas on the morning after our arrival. No heating, no hot water. We stayed warm with the open fire. The owner tried to get the situation resolved but was not able to. We had to leave one day earlier than expected. Very unlucky.

Squaw Valley fun

Very scenic, old school rustic 1960 Olympics house. Relaxing sauna, lots of light from the floor to ceiling windows the entire front of the house. Cozy wood burning fireplace (with tons of available wood) adds to the ambiance, and for any skiers with the inclination, there is a ski tuning vise by the downstairs sauna! One mile from the Olympic Village, with a handy bike path and hiking trail nearby. Beautiful Squaw Valley scenery is the perfect compliment to the fabulous vacation that awaits you there.

Amazing all around Tahoe experience.

The home is simply perfect. The family room with fireplace was so cozy for nightly game play, reading by the fire, or taking zooms for work. Parking was easy, lots of firewood, and the kitchen, dining, and other features made us feel right at home. Will definitely stay again!

Loved, loved , loved this property!!

What a great throwback to the early 60’s !! Total ski chalet with floor to ceiling windows, great vintage feel and so comfortable!! The kitchen was stocked with every spice and condiment you could want! The area the house is in Squaw Valley is close to everything! Great hiking and biking just steps from the house! We were there during bad smoke from fires north of us, and Eric the property owner, took the time to check in on us and make sure we were safe! All in all our family vacation was near perfect and I would go back to this wonderful house again !! Thank you for being great hosts !!

Awesome retro cabin in Squaw Valley

This cabin is wonderfully retro and cozy. The 1960’s architecture and photos from the Olympics makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Plenty of space for our family of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids, 1 dog). We loved the sunken TV room full of board games. The large deck has lovely views and made for a great place to have a glass of wine at sunset. The well stocked kitchen was super helpful since we cooked most of our meals. The whole house was clean and well provisioned. We really enjoyed our stay!!

Awesome location

We had a great time with our family for thanksgiving and the cabin is in a great location. My only 2 things I would say in regards to the property are it’s much smaller than it appears in the photos, and it isn’t very little kid friendly.

Great location, well stocked, a few surprises

Overall we really enjoyed our week at Squaw- This house is really well stocked with everything you might need in the kitchen, etc. but we did find it to be considerably smaller than it appeared online. Also, we were surprised to learn that the kids bunk room is actually part of the loft and essentially part of the living room with no full walls- Kind of ruined our evenings! The location is great- almost exactly a mile from the lifts at Squaw. Great house if you have older children or a group of adults.

Holiday Visit 2019

We had a wonderful stay at the Classic Norwegian Cabin! The location is perfect; a short walk to the village at Squaw. The cabin is warm, inviting and has an amazing wall of windows that provide a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. We enjoyed the sauna, the new kitchen appliances (especially the beautiful new stove/oven) and the large kitchen table where we gathered at the end of the day for dinner and card games! Eric was easily available by phone. We hope to return again soon! Thanks!

Epic Ski Cabin

If you are looking for the real deal, this is it. Authentic to the core. Classic Norwegian Cabin is the perfect description. Our group was 6 high school boys and me, and this place could not have been better. A large tv, bunk rooms (YES THANKS TO BUNK ROOMS), a great living space and deck. We didn't want more and it was perfect. We never used the sauna, we were there to ski, eat and sleep; in that order. A bit of hike to the lifts if you are walking, but we had a car...the driveway has plenty of room but takes some concentration to back out, however, there is a spot across the street. I would definitely stay again. If really want to experience Squaw, how it was intended, this is the place.

Beautiful, Comfortable, well-equipped, super close Squaw Village

What an awesome weekend we had! This home is so beautiful and peaceful. The weather was magnificent and the views of the mountains were breathtaking. We easily skied Squaw and Alpine for 3 days with our three kids and had another family of three join us for a portion of our stay. We were all comfortable and happy. The kitchen and pantry are well stocked and made eating in with my large family easy and comfortable. The kids enjoyed the TV room and the adults hung out by the fire. The entry way mud room was the perfect spot for all our ski equipment and it all fit nicely. The showers were hot and water pressure was amazing (always a bonus). We checked out the beautiful sauna in the basement but didn’t get to use it. This place really is a gem and I look forward to staying again. Also such a special place that has belonged to one family forever. Totally awesome !!

Beautiful, cozy cabin perfect for a weekend ski trip

Our stay in Eric's cabin was the best; Eric called us in advance to run through the details of our arrival and answer any questions we may have. The cabin is beautifully designed - there's plenty of space and we found everything we needed there to have a great weekend. It's really close to the Squaw Ski Resort and the village. I imagine the cabin must be great to stay in summertime as well -- would love to come back!

About the host

Hosted by Eric Magnuson

Host profile image
We are the original owners of this property that was built in 1957 for the Winter Olympic Games. 3 generations of Magnuson's consider this property our Tahoe home. This was the 2nd home built in Olympic Valley. Original cabin was updated with addition of kitchen, Media room, and laundry room. We imported much of the furniture from Norway, as well as fabrics used on built in sofa's and chairs.

Why they chose this property

This cabin is one of the original 10 homes built in the Valley by our family for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. The lot was chosen for its central location and hillside position offering views of the entire valley and ski hill.
