About this property

WATERFRONT Maine Historical Cottage with Separate Guest Cottage

Built in the 1800s with enchanting water views and cozy decor, this newly renovated cottage is simply a GEM. Huge master bedroom with million-dollar views, and plenty of room for family including a separate guest cottage with separate bath. This cottage is MAINE in all of her beauty. You'll never want to leave! Set in the historic village of Bayside, kid-friendly and quaint - and a 5-minute drive from historic Belfast, where there is shopping, restaurants, and beautiful waterfront walks. It is an easy, beautiful one-hour drive from Bangor Airport. Come experience rest with amazing hikes, rivers, antiquing, amazing restaurants, sailing, fishing, or simply reading on the porch looking over the Penopscot Bay watching the sailboats and lobster pots :) We have lots of favorite spots to recommend! Although the direct access to the beach below is limited due to a steep cliff, it can be accessed at severalpoints within walking distance. And the Bayside Dock in the photos is just a short walk or drive and provides the best swimming, fishing and diving even better than the beach. Rocky coasts of Maine can be tricky to access but there are lots of safe options! The cottage is also almost 140 years old and is not luxurious by any standards..it is basic and has nice fixtures for Maine ‘camp’ standards but is certainly not a fancy hotel :) It’s clean and cozy and old which is what we love! Feel free to ask any questions concerning accommodations we love to share any details you may want to know!

How to ruin a week in Maine

To anyone considering renting this property, please understand the following: while this cottage is on the water, THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THE BEACH, despite the listing pictures which show the beach and a dock for tenant's use, and the listing details stating: private stairs to beach and use of private dock. There are no stairs and no dock. When questioned about this, the owner said: "just use the next door neighbor's stairs." I do not appreciate being told to trespass. As it turns out, there never were any stairs or dock, according to the neighbors. VRBO really needs to find a way to vet listings for accuracy. In addition to the above, the cottage was not opened prior to our arrival at 7:00pm, so, after a 12 hour road trip, we found there was no running water, no heat, many lights were not working, the microwave oven was dead. So, we had to turn on the water, engage the water heaters, swap out dead lightbulbs, untangle the spider web of extention cords to get any light into the kitchen. Once the water was on, we discovered that both the bathroom and kitchen sink faucets leaked. Also, there was no power to the clothes dryer; the "screened in" porch had multiple rips, tears and holes in every single panel and the porch furniture cushions had rust and black mold stains. As if that weren't enough, the house has more code safety violations than I have space to list. If anyone at VRBO is curious, I took lots of pictures and would be happy to share them. Never Again.

Great Location!

Bayside is in an amazing location right on the water with great sea views from the master bedroom, living room and sun room. The area is a quiet suburban neighborhood which would be great for families and the use of the bikes is a great addition. The property itself is in need of some updating. Some doors don't shut properly and lots of creaky floorboards...etc. One of the rooms had not been cleaned on arrival, but communication was great with the owner and the issue was sorted quickly.

Million dollar view

Sweet rustic cottage in a wonderful community with a view that cannot be beat! Short walk to beach access and swimming in the bay. We were able to explore both Belfast and Camden from this super convenient location. Watching lobster boats and sailboats make their way across the bay is just what we wanted from our Maine vacation.

Wonderful town and location for waterside house

House is very comfortable and in a beautiful spot with gorgeous views. Very rustic and casual atmosphere. Loved the screen porch. Staircase to main bedroom is steep and narrow, so not for anyone with difficulty managing stairs. Stairs to beach in front of house requires using neighboring house's long & steep stairs, so ask permission. 2 small bedrooms each have 2 twins. Room with the queen and a twin is in a separate small building with a garage and the bedroom needs upgrading. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, the house and the location and would come again!

We have been coming to Historic Bayside for almost 40 years. We recently purchased this property and plan to keep it for generations. It is old and Mainers call them ‘camps’ …alluding to the original camps they were built to be. Modern updates have been made but what we live is the charm and simplicity and ‘camp-like’ quality of the place. With modern conveniences and antique furnishings if this is your thing you’ll love the romance of this place. We spend our summers here and love to share with our guests when we aren’t here. Due to more damage to the coastline we have chosen not to build our own set of stairs as the neighbors on either side have sets of stairs that they agree to keep private due to the steepness, regular washing out of and liability with guests using them. So we suggest to access the water you take a short walk 4 houses down to the left and access at at Kelly’s Cove which is wonderful for spending the entire day beaching, shelling and swimming. The Bayside dock is also great for diving swimming and also fishing as well as a beach to lounge with our chairs for the day. We hope you love this historic village as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

Bayside Village is from another time. A true Historic village built as a Methodist summer camp…many of the homes have been converted to year round but most are not. A true walking village it’s like a camp but filled with modern conveniences and only a 5 minute drive from town with lovely restaurants and shopping, 30 minutes from beautiful Camden and an hour and some from Acadia National Park. Neighbors in Bayside are lifelong friends and we all check on each others homes throughout the year. It’s commmunity at its best.

What makes this property unique

Our home has breathtaking views, co
Vines with the ‘old’ camp feeling of Bayside Cottages….it hasn’t been modernized or stripped of its late 1800’s charm which is what we love. Exposed beams and uneven floors and old glass doorknobs is what we love about it. Someone built it as their dream cottage looking over the sea over 100 years ago and we love that that is still what it is…Including original green that we have kept. The color of the cottage hasn’t changed since she was born. She is perfectly imperfect to us and we hope you love it just the same :)
