Home in the Woods

I chose that title because I spent a couple of summers at a Methodist church camp (Epworth Forest in Indiana) and that's what we called our daytime "base." It is, however, a fitting title given the oak-hickory forest that surrounds the property. Cozy Cottage lived up to its name; both comfy and cozy despite our arrival on day three of a four-day rain event. It was our 6-month-old Lab's first road trip, and she loved running through the fallen leaves and investigating all the sticks they'd buried. The We found the furnishings comfortable and the kitchen well-equipped. We slept like the proverbial babies in the "master bedroom"; with an extra room for storing our gear. Our meals were taken around a handsome farmhouse table. Cozy Cottage has easy access to several nearby state parks, the Ozark Trail, and Shepherd Mountain bike park; as well as hunting and fishing in the nearby Mark Twain National Forest. We visited several of the parks; sadly most were fully or partially closed because of a major flooding event. We did get into Elephant Rock and Taum Sauk, however. We also hiked some of the trails on the property, tracking the white gravel paths through the fallen leaf cover. We're not much for dining out on trips, but we did get some pretty good burgers from the Iron Mule in Ironton and a massive, 2-person cinnamon roll from Thee Abbey Kitchen in Arcadia. Thanks to our hosts for a pleasant stay.

Fall getaway

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend away at this cottage. Beautiful fall setting surrounded by trees. Over six miles of hiking trails on property and easy access to several state parks nearby. Cottage is very comfortable with two up-to-date bathrooms, three well-sized bedrooms, full kitchen, dining area with big table (works well for playing games) and nice living area. Exceeded our expectations and we plan to come back in the future.

Great get-away, surrounded by nature's beauty

The house– clean, updated, many conveniences. We’ve stayed in MANY VRBO homes and this was one of our favorites. The extensive grounds were full of beautiful trees. Surrounded by nature. The garden and trail were lovely! Out and about, we recommend visiting Johnson Shut-Ins, Elephant Rock or taking a float trip on the Black River. The nearby Abbey Kitchen, ice cream shop and antique store were marvelous. We at dinner there both nights of our stay.

We stayed for two nights and it was great! The beds were comfy, the kitchen had everything you need. The walking trails were nice and we saw hawks, rabbits, deer, squirrels, and lots of birds. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful cottage, Amazing property

We were in the area for a mountain bike race at Shepherd Mountain. This cottage worked perfect for 3 adults and 2 teenagers. Linda, the host, was responsive and friendly. The cottage was super clean, had beautiful antique furniture, and comfortable beds. We were very thankful for the air conditioning since it was unseasonably warm during our stay. We requested a hose to wash bikes and our host provided one. The location was close to town and the bike park, but it was quiet and secluded. I hiked the trails on the property daily and recommend tick repellent. It was fun to explore. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I moved to the Valley back in 2014. We bought the Iron County Farms next to this property in 2013, which was once a Thoroughbred farm. We decided to run cattle on it. In 2020 we turned one of our big barn lofts into a wedding venue. Keeping the original woodwork of this beautiful 100-year-old barn intact. It's definitely one of a kind. In August of 2021 We had the chance to purchase this wonderful 38 acres that sits adjacent to our farm, that would give us 3 additional venues, plus 6 Cabins. We were so excited for this new property. In January of 2022 we finally took over ownership of this beautiful property and in May of 2022 decided to share our cabins with all of you! We hope you love them and the property as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

The thing we enjoy most about this property is its beauty and history. We love that it's just a mile outside of town, but you feel a million miles away.

What makes this property unique

In the early 1900's this property was a Methodist kid's camp called Epworth Among the Hills. The big Pavillion you will see on the hill of this property is from the 1904 World's Fair of St. Louis. The two-story red Mission House was established in 1907 and was where the missionaries would stay. Alot of kids spent their summers on this beautiful property. The camp shut its doors in the late 1990's and new owners bought it in 2001 and did a wonderful job refurbing all the original cabins and the Riverstone lodge. The boy cabins still sit in the original state but gutted and new roofs until we decided how we want to refurbish them. My husband and I owning the farm next door and turning one of our 100-year-old barns into a wedding/event venue, when this property became available to purchase, we didn't have to think twice. We took over ownership in January of 2022. We changed some furnishing inside the cabins, installed charter and some TV's. Then in May of 2022 we decided to put the cabins on short term rental sites so everyone could come and enjoy the beauty and history of this best kept secret in the Valley. We also do large and small group retreats, with or without meals, weddings and all other events. So, when you come and stay with us, take some time to walk around and breathe in a little bit of history.
