About this property

Byzantine Home in the Castle

The village was approximately built in the 12th century during the Byzantine era in Castle to Protect its Citizens from the Pirates. The architecture of the settlement with its narrow streets and perimetric fortification served to repel pirate raids in the following future. The street plan of the village is pentagonical and its many narrow roads inside the fortifications give the impression of a labyrinth. The fortifications were reinforced during theGenoese era in Chios, between 1346 and 1566. The church of the Older Taxiarchi that is located in the centre of the village was built in 1794. A lot of villagers of Mesta were killed or captured during the Chios massacre. Some of them were released after a while because the mastic agriculture was important for the Ottomans.

Magic in the Aegean; MESTA; on island of CHIOS

Extraordinary, one of a kind experience at 800 year old BYZANTINE castle in MESTA , discover how the “ancients lived” ; with all the conveniences of contemporary living , a fully restored accommodation equipped with modern kitchen and all the amenities, luxury bathroom , A/C and heat throughout, state of the art washer and dryer. The accommodation is restored with local, hand crafted furniture and woodwork by a noted craftsman. MESTA is suitable for visitors from all countries since many people in the village are bilingual . The location is perfectly situated to access historic sites nearby in OLYMPIO and the new and modern MASTIC MUSEUM. The caves at OLYMPIO are remarkable; date back 25 million years ; the stagalites and stalagmites are magnificent! The MASTICA museum provides a “tour de force” of the history and importance of this ancient health promoting natural substance ~ and how the locals were able to “liberate” this industry from 2,000 years struggle and domination from foreign entities. Exploring the pristine local beaches ; (don’t miss DIDIMA BEACH) was an utter joy! Ah, the Aegean Sea; swimming in emerald green/ blue waters in a private and remote area. Dining in the village is splendid; enjoying community; young and old, near the main square and church. Historic markers are strategically posted at all village entrances to facilitate self guided walks. Two restaurants minutes away at MESTA PORT; serve freshly caught fish; just a 5 minute drive. GPS works well throughout the island to facilitate driving to destinations. For those arriving in city of CHIOS ; I suggest a visit to CHIOS TOURIST OFFICE, very helpful and an abundance of literature for orientation around the island.
