Clean and central location

The cottage was very clean upon arrival. The neighborhood is very walkable and bike friendly. Restaurants were in easy walking distance as was the ferry, which we took to NYC to visit Ground Zero. Barbara was a good host and gave us ideas for things we could do with our dog. There are many restaurants nearby that have dog friendly outdoor spaces. Thanks for having us, and my stupid Thanks for having us!

The best beach cottage thanks to a great host!

This is the best cottage for a peaceful, intimate seaside stay, amid abundant natural beauty, whether you want to be active, low-key, or anywhere in between. What makes this property truly great is Barbara, the host. She's attentive, accessible, super nice, keeps the property in tip-top condition, and has great taste. The decor is simple, clean, and subtly playful. It's done in soothing shades of blue and white, brought to life with thoughtful and fun touches like a small vase of fresh garden flowers on the kitchen table and a little trail of sea shells on the vanity sink. The amenities are great, such as the sunny balcony and the compact, well-equipped kitchen where one can cook satisfying meals. Barbara's thoughtful attentions to detail, large and small, create an environment for relaxation and enjoyment.

Close to everything we needed

The cozy cottage is so clean and cute. We really enjoyed staying there. We did bike riding, fishing, tourist attractions. The weather did not cooperate, but we still found plenty to do. Barbara is very sweet and gracious host. 😊. The cottage was very clean and everything we needed to cook and do everyday tasks was there for us. Plus the washer and dryer was a big plus. I never had a VRBO with that, now I will always make sure we have on. Thanks again Barbara for letting us stay at your cottage. Hope to see you next year! Donna from PA

Clearly owned by a caring creative person. Lots of little touches. Neat, sweet, petite. Close to ferry and train rides to NYC. Walking distance to harbor. Walk to pizza and Mexican restaurants. Easy drive down coast to Asbury Park and other boardwalk towns. Bottom of hill that rises to the highlands. Check out Twin Lights house. Mt. Mitchill.Sandy Hook spit.

Lovely cottage apartment for 1 or 2

This is a very nice, very well maintained, nicely furnished and appointed 2nd story small cottage apartment; perfect for one person or a couple. Although small, it has everything you need and everything worked well. The kitchen had pots, pans, utensils, etc. - even spices. The bathroom had nice towels etc. and even had a good forst aid kit. The linens and blankets were nice & clean. Barbara is a conscientious host; when she found out I make tea, she bought a new tea kettle for me/ the cottage. The decor is nice and appropriate for being near the ocean - mostly white with blue with ocean/nautical/sea life images. Guests might want to know that the matress on the queen size bed is firm. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!

Smoke/Tobacco Filled Toxic Property - Avoid

Avoid renting this toxic property. The moment you enter the property it is evident that it has been lived in by someone who chained smoked for years, possibly decades in it. The air quality is extremely toxic. There is sticky tar-like residue in the closets, kitchen cabinets, above the oven and worst of all, bathroom. The owner tried to put a new coat of paint over the walls and few new pieces of furniture, but it does not cover up the stench throughout the house. We tried to stay for 1 night, and it was hell. When we left the following morning - all of our things, our clothes, our suitcases, anything that we brought into the property smelled like this toxic tarry smoke stench. When we mentioned this to the owner who lives next door (her windows look directly into the property) she acknowledge that a smoker previously lived in the house. The house also has cheap air conditioners installed in the windows. They rattle and are loud. The front air conditioning unit spews water onto the balcony so when you open the door to go onto the balcony you get hit in the face with a ton of water spewing out of the back of the A/C unit. There is no parking. There is a place to park by the house itself but the owner uses that spot, along with the spot at her house next door for her cars. Guests have to find street parking, which is not always available. Guests may have to park as much as a mile away and walk to the house. There is a light that is installed at night on the stairs leading up to the house from the ground floor. (The garage shown in the photo is a mystery, you enter the house from a staircase on the right). The light on the stairs turns on automatically and instead of staying on - flashes on and off, If you are epileptic, this could cause a seizure. I suppose this light was installed so that the owner who live directly next door can know when you are coming and going. The property is also in a run down industrial type neighborhood - though close to the high speed ferry to NYC. If we could give it zero stars we would.

I’ll be happy to suggest restaurants, activities and provide directions or transportation information so that you may enjoy your stay in our little gem of a town, Highlands, as well as the natural beauty of Sandy Hook National Park and Beach, and our proximity to the NYCity Fast-Ferry.

Why they chose this property

Quiet coastal neighborhood in quaint, walkable town known for its restaurants and outdoor recreation. One Mile from Sandy Hook Beach, Gateway National Park. Clothing-optional beach, Hiking, Boating, Biking. Ten-minute walk to Seastreak Ferry to NYC (45min ride to NYC).

What makes this property unique

The cottage was originally built in 1921 and has gone through many renovations – the latest was after Hurricane Sandy, when there was 5 feet of water in the living room!! The cozy 400sq ft house was then completely renovated and elevated, so now it is up in the air surrounded by the cool ocean breezes.
