4 Bedrooms + Loft, 3.5 Baths, Sleeps 11, 2400 sq ft

The San Juan Retreat is a brand new (2022 construction) luxury mountain home with hot tub and attached garage at the edge of the Weminuche Wilderness and minutes from Purgatory Resort and unique local restaurants. Let this be your destination AND launch point for year-round activities. Privately set on 1 acre against the San Juan National Forest with a short hike/snowshoe (0.2mi) to a secluded overlook with stunning views of Electra Lake and the Animas Glacier Valley right off the backyard! Grill out on the deck and enjoy views of the wilderness and Castle Rock and play on the flat family friendly lot. Relax in the hot tub after a full day of activities! Fully stocked kitchen with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances. The kids will love hearing the Durango Silverton Train whistle every morning and afternoon as it passes through Cascade Canyon in the distance. 25 miles north of Durango and 25 miles south of Silverton you are in the heart of it all—myriad adventures await! We visit our home frequently, it is well cared for and we strive to keep everything in tip top condition.

Stay connected with Starlink Internet and—if so desired—work remotely from the provided desk with HDMI external monitor and desk chair (located in the master bedroom). Stream internet TV/movies on the flat screen Roku TVs in two of the three living areas (BYO passwords). The kids will love the loft play area and the foosball table downstairs! Cornhole available as well.

King beds in all four bedrooms! There are three twin XL beds (bunk + one separate) and a full size sleeper sofa in the upstairs loft, a great space for kids!

Into fishing? You will have access to shoreline fishing (May through November while the lake is not frozen) in the private neighborhood lake that is stocked with 20-in trout! Artificial lures and barbless hooks only. Catch and release. Ask us for the fishing pass!

Central heat keeps the house warm. Two mini-split air conditioning units, one in the main floor living area and other in the loft common area—to help take the edge off of the rare extra-warm summer day. All bedrooms have a ceiling fan and additional fans are provided as well—just in case. Nighttime lows in the summer average in the 40's, and are sometimes in the 50's—perfect weather for opening bedroom windows at night!

Two garage parking spots available so you can load and unload your equipment in any weather! Two 30A 240V outlets available in the garage (BYO EV charging cord).

Main living area is on the 2nd floor. One flight of stairs is required to get to the front door. Attached garage is on the 1st floor which includes one bedroom, laundry room, a half bath and a living space with couch and TV. Main floor includes 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, living room, kitchen, dining area and entry/mud room. The third floor includes a loft common area, 1 bedroom and 1 full bathroom.

4WD/AWD with snowflake rated tires or chains is required November through late March. Local chains available from www.purgatorychains.com. Our home is 2 mi on a gravel road from highway 550. The gravel roads are well maintained and plowed in winter, but will be snow/ice packed. A few sections of the road are at a moderate ~12% incline and can get icy and unequipped vehicles will get stuck—creating a safety hazard for the neighborhood. Please see map. If you need to rent a vehicle with AWD and snowflake rated tires please try Turo.

Wonderful way to ring in the new year

San Juan retreat has everything and more. From the fully stocked kitchen to the toys and sleds for the kids, they have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and complete. The hot tub was great for those after ski sore muscles and the sled hill right outside in the backyard gave our boys (11, 10, 9 and 4) endless fun! Rooms were large and the beds were cozy, the entire home was spotless. We highly recommend this beautiful cabin and can’t wait to stay again.

All that & a private trail!

This cabin is more beautiful than the pictures show. The layout was perfect, it was spotless, and better equipped—down to a coffee grinder and rice cooker—than most permanent residences. The views from the back deck are stunning, but the short trail from the backyard is the ultimate treat as it leads you through groves of aspens, pines, and wildflowers to its destination of a picnic area nestled into a hillside with a breathtaking lake view. We loved the private neighborhood that is close enough to Durango for quick drives into town and practically next door to Purgatory Resort. In short, not one of us wanted to leave.

Far Beyond Expectations

Everything about this property is amazing! This was the cleanest property I have ever stayed in…hands down! Andrea and Mitchell take such great care of this place! The attention to detail left us lacking nothing…down to the Q-tips! You have to experience this place to understand what I mean. This place, the process, the communication, the cleanliness, customer service should be the STANDARD for all B&B’s, hotels, rental properties…..it is a little expensive, but….finally, you get what you pay for….and, more….Well done, Andrea and Mitchell!!!!!!

Luxury cabin enhanced our family vacation

This house was perfect! It is beautiful, comfortable, thoughtfully organized and conveniently stocked. Beds were super comfy. We enjoyed hiking, Purgatory resort activities, Mesa Verde, Silverton and Durango. The hike to the overlook at the house everyday was an added bonus. Ice lakes was incredible. The table is big, comfortable and perfect for all of our board games in the evening. The deck was amazing, we enjoyed morning coffee/tea and evening drinks. If we weren’t grilling on the deck, area restaurants like James Ranch Grill were a must. Wonderful dark skies at night with an amazing view of the Milky Way galaxy and shooting stars were enjoyed by all ages. The abundant chipmunks were a source of constant entertainment for the kids. We are already trying to work out another trip to enjoy this house.

Best vrbo

We absolutely loved this home. Fabulous views just .2 miles away where we had several picnics. There were also beautiful views of the forest from the back deck and stunning skies full of stars every night. The home itself is new, clean, comfortable, and well appointed. The kitchen has everything you’d need. The bed and pillows are also super comfy. The owners have thought of many small extras to make you feel welcome. There was a bag of snacks, coffee and spices. There was also everything you’d need for the first few days of tp, toiletries, and such. I’ve already sent this listing to several friends and I plan on coming again. Don’t miss out on this mountain home. Also, the food at the Nugget bar is amazing, don’t be deterred by the way it looks.

San Juan Retreat is a Real Treat

Beautiful and new- The San Juan Retreat is truly a retreat property right near Purgatory! They have thought of everything in the newly built cabin- the best feature that sets them apart on the inside of the property has to be the four bedrooms all with king beds! The black out blinds kept us snug in our rooms, an added bonus. We ate in nightly and they provided everything needed to cook and grill well, along with a staples-packed pantry. There were games and books, a cozy fireplace, a beautiful deck, and a lovely washer/dryer (with supplies!) that served us well after long days on the slopes and snowmobiling. The hot water was glorious for the whole family and there was plenty of it to bathe (huge tub up in the loft area and tub on the main level), or walk in showers in the master and in the loft area (with a view). On our March visit, the ample snow was perfect for snow-shoeing right outside the cabin on an easy trail through the national forest. The trail ends at “Vista Point”, a gorgeous spot overlooking breathtaking lake and mountain scenery. The owner had also built a sled run in the backyard which was very fun for the kids! I had to get some work done while there and Starlink wifi worked great. Easy peasy to access with in-room QR code provided. The owners are also very helpful and readily accessible with any questions. A new favorite spot for our family is the nearby hot springs. With multiple pools at different temperatures (and fun drinks), we all really enjoyed it and will definitely be back. Other good spots nearby are The Nugget Bar at the bottom of the hill (delicious sliders) and Olde Schoolhouse Pizza a couple of miles down the road. This property is right near Purgatory (chains/snow tires are a must in this high-incline neighborhood in ski season) and an easy drive into downtown Durango where we like to shop at the end of the trip. Coming home to a double garage to unload is another bonus! Can’t wait to visit again, would love to visit in another season to see wildflowers or fall colors! Highly recommend!

McCown Family Vacation

Beautiful cabin, beautiful views, perfect trip!

We can’t say enough wonderful things about our stay at San Juan Retreat. The cabin is in a gorgeous location and an easy drive to downtown Durango and several different hiking areas. We were amazed at how well stocked the cabin is, from extra toothbrushes to every kitchen tool you could need. The 4 king beds are super comfortable and the rooms are spacious. The deck was one of our favorite spots to hang out and we loved watching the birds in the mornings! We wished we had stayed another few days!

Excellent Cabin with great views

Our cabin was truly our home away from home! Clean, peaceful, comfortable, beautifully decorated, and awesome views! Living areas were cozy, beds were comfortable, kitchen fully stocked and big enough table for our family to play dominoes! We loved the trail behind cabin that lead to a gorgeous view of mountains and a lake. We had some cool mornings and the heater quickly warmed us up! About the host

Hosted by Andrea and Mitch McCarthy

Host profile image
We re-discovered Durango shortly after moving to New Mexico and we fell in love, again! We are both originally from Florida. We treasure the mountains of Colorado and the numerous fun things to do during all four seasons. From the green vegetation in Summer, to the snow in Winter and the explosion of yellow Aspens in the Fall--the San Juan Mountains can't be beat!

We knew Durango was the spot we wanted to enjoy as a family indefinitely. When we decided to build, it was during the supply chain crunch, so we had to roll up our sleeves and get creative! Mitch harvested standing dead Ponderosa pines from our lot and nearby, milled the lumber with our mill, stacked and dried it, and used the wood for the siding that we painted and installed ourselves. The completion of our home has been a multi year labor of love that we can't wait to share with you!

We visit our home frequently, it is well cared for and we strive to keep everything in tip top condition.

Why they chose this property

Accessibility to the National Forest! Our house is one of the few in the neighborhood that has a mostly flat lot, which we love! We have 2 small children and no steep cliffs were a must! At the end of the backyard, there is a small hill that makes for really fun sledding after a good fresh snowfall. Our house also backs up to the National Forest, which offers so much! You can easily snow shoe or back country ski into the forest in the wintertime.

During the summer, there is an awesome, easy, short flat hike (<10 mins) right behind our property that leads to an amazing overlook of Electra Lake and the Animas Glacier Valley. During the winter, you can easily snow shoe or back country ski out to the overlook as well.

Our south facing lot offers an abundance of warm sun during the wintertime.

What makes this property unique

Location! Our home is located a short 3 miles from the Purgatory Ski Resort Area. There are so many amazing family fun activities all year round! From skiing, hiking, mountain biking, paddle boarding, horseback riding to river rafting, off-roading, and more, there is sure to be something fun for everyone! Historic Downtown Durango is located approx. 25 miles south, enjoy a ride on the Durango-Silverton train or visit the area’s many amazing restaurants and amenities, too many to list!

There is no better feeling than getting in the hot tub after a full day on the trails or on the slopes in the beautiful San Juan mountains!

Love king size beds? We’ve got you covered, all four bedrooms have king size beds. There are three twin XL beds (bunk + one separate ) and a full size sleeper sofa in the loft--perfect for the kiddos. Need to work from home while traveling? Stay connected with Starlink internet.
