About this property

Chic award-winning, private villa outside Merida immersed in nature

Casa Sisal - A contemporary private oasis set within a luxury Hacienda. Casa Sisal is our modern jewel at Hacienda Sac Chich. Relax in the privacy of this contemporary home surrounded by nature. Designed to experience the beauty of the Yucatan light and sky you will find Casa Sisal a respite from it all.

Surrounded by water lily reflecting ponds, this 2000 square foot home is built within the 2-acre henequen drying fields of the hacienda and is enclosed by the haciendas original 11-foot wall, creating its own private world.

Casa Sisal has 2 bedrooms. One King Bedroom and one bedroom with 2 Queen beds. Each bedroom has it’s own full modern bathroom. In between the two bedrooms is the amazing open living space consisting of a modern kitchen, sunken living area and dining space for 6. The unique design of this space has floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, that when opened, give you the feeling of being outdoors. Casa Sisal is fully air-conditioned and has ceiling fans in all rooms.

Looking out of the living area on one side you’ll find a patio with a 30-foot lily pond. Walk out the opposite side and enjoy a beautiful 3-sided infinity-edge swimming pool, palapa, and patio with lounge chairs. Your pool overlooks the great lawn that is lined with 18 royal palms and dramatically lit at night.

This home is constructed of hardwoods, limestone and plaster polished to a sleek finish by the ancient Mayan technique called chukum. The ceiling and door heights are 10 feet giving every room a sense of great space. The house is custom furnished, fully equipped and is lit very dramatically.

Guests have complete access to all of Casa Sisal, the Great Lawn and the Bocce Ball court as well. If the other part of the Hacienda does not have guests and you would like a tour, we are very happy to do that.

Amazing!

We will return real soon!! What an awesome place. Clean, quiet responsive owners and wonderful staff, Great small village to get to know how Mayan People live. Close to Merida museums, five star dining, and the beaches!! So much to see and do. Best of all was our stay at Casa Sisal so relaxing and beautiful!

Outstanding place!!!

After a 3 weeks travel in Mexico, Casa Sisal was the best retreat we could have had for our last three days in this beautiful country. Carefully designed house with outstanding comfort, amazing garden with fireflies, great pool and palms. Very friendly and welcoming hosts. It was great to see the amazing work Cyndy and Howie have done to have such a great place in a small village in Mexico! We loved the contrasts between the surroundings, the reconstructed hacienda and the new Casa Sisal. Would love to travel to Merida so we could stay in this amazing place again.

A dream come true

Hacienda Sac Chich was everything we'd expected and some more. We hosted our wedding there and came away with rave reviews. The compound is GORGEOUS but without being pretentious. We will always remember our swims in the well-maintained pools, our outdoor dinners by the fireflies, and our stays in the tastefully decorated bedrooms. As a bonus, the hacienda is easily accessible for those visiting from Merida and Cancun/PDC/Tulum; Cyndy and her house staff were ultra-attentive to all of our needs; and it all came at a reasonable cost. We recommend the Hacienda without reservations to anybody looking for a memorable experience in the Yucatan, and we hope to visit again sooner than later.

BEST EXPERIENCE EVER

This place was absolutely STUNNING. Cyndy was such a pleasure to work with. Beyond helpful and accommodating. Also the house staff were lovely. So helpful and kind. Everything about our time and wedding here was amazing. Not a single hiccup or complaint. Loved every moment. Would recommend it 100%

wunderful time after a roundtrip through Mexico

We stayed for 10 days in the Hacienda at casa sisal in early September. We enjoyed the quietness, the feeling to be in the nature there, the places around and to live in an outstanding design object. Cyndy and Howie as well as Wilhelm and the staff made us everything comfortable, so could enjoy the heat in the pool, the frogsound in the evenings and the lights of fireflies when it gets dark. Merida is close, with a lot of fantastic possibilities for food. Uxmal and Chichen Itza are 1h away, Mayapan only 30 min. Enjoy the cenotes around ... it is amazing to swim there. But the best is the feeling, when you come back to Casa Sisal after all these activities ...

An absolute dream

We had our wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich—it was an absolute dream. Casa Sisal’s architecture is even more outstanding than you imagine it, with each detail thoughtfully considered—from the way those enormous windows slide gently in their pockets to the waterfall showerhead in the sun-filled master bath. The master bed was heavenly, as is sleeping surrounded by the scents and sounds of the jungle before taking a quiet early morning dip. The central living area was beautiful open air or closed, day or starry night, and the great palm-lined lawn was breathtaking whether during the usual brilliant sunshine or the one gray afternoon we spent in our robes watching tropical birds stop by in the drizzle. Cyndy, Howie, and the staff were not just warm and attentive hosts but were easygoing in response to the sundry needs that came up surrounding the wedding (including providing a great list of suggested vendors). We had the staff prepare a delicious dinner to welcome our families to Mexico (a night we were surprised by fireflies), and a wedding-day brunch of fruit plates, chilaquiles, and mimosas for our guests staying across the lawn at Casa de Maquinas. The hacienda is near the small village of Acanceh, as well as a number cenotes and ruins—but we couldn’t bring ourselves to leave the grounds. Mérida, the nearest city, is about 40 minutes away and full of fantastic markets, restaurants, and bars (as well as beautiful places to stay for our guests). We daydreamed about visiting Casa Sisal before we were engaged, then dreamed about it throughout our engagement—but from the moment we walked in (past the lily pond, to the aroma of fresh-baked banana bread) it exceeded those dreams. It’s a truly special place run by truly special people, and we can’t wait to visit again.

Stay in a home that wins prizes for it's design and hospitality!

Casa Sisal is approached from across an expanse of lawn that is set off by palm trees against rock walls by day and a chorus of fireflies by night. The pool reflects the moods of the sky and cools you in clear water a few steps from your bedroom doors. The house itself holds surprises and exquisite features in every room and opens completely to the outdoors whenever you wish. This house is heaven. I can't wait to go back and take friends or family! The owners are some of the best and most welcoming people in the world. Their exquisite taste is reflected in every aspect of this beautiful and magical place. Thank you to everyone there who made our stay so fulfilling!

Fully alive!!

Magical is the word that comes most quickly to mind, also spectacular, exquisite, amazing, mind-blowing, unexpected, beautiful, enlivening! Casa Sisal, where I stayed for 5 days with a group of women celebrating a big birthday at Hacienda Sac Chich, and then for 3 more days with my husband, surpassed all my quite high expectations. Having studied the website, I knew this would be an unusually fine experience. I still found myself struck speechless by the beauty and joy of this property, the people who built and maintain it, and the staff who lovingly tend it. The people of the Yucatan are kind, welcoming, open-hearted. I felt absolutely joyful the entire time, even though the temperatures were quite hot during our stay. That just made plunging into the gorgeous pool all the more refreshing. I felt fully alive! Life is lived closer to nature here. Casa Sisal has sliding glass and screen doors on both north and south sides so that, when they are opened all the way, the living area becomes part of the wide open space that surrounds this spectacular home. Relaxing in the pool at sunset, we sipped margaritas, listened to mariachis, and watched fireflies twinkle in the 2 acres of lush green grass which were once drying fields for the henequen fiber (made from agave) that made many hacienda owners rich in the 1800's. (See, we not only had FUN, we learned so much, too! Go see nearby Sotuta de Peon, a working hacienda museum of henequen production. And Uxmal, of course! A wonder of ancient Mayan civilization. And do some great shopping and eating in nearby Merida, tambien! Oh, and swim in the cenotes, the underground caves filled with clear, cool water!) Cyndy and Howie Berger, the proprietors, are two of the most interesting, talented, creative, and kind people you will ever meet. Casa Sisal and the larger Hacienda Sac Chich, are their labor of love and creative vision. They are true artists of life and make you feel like you are part of their ongoing creativity. Mexico has always had a piece of my heart, but here I fell in love with the culture, the language, the history, the food, and the creativity of the Yucatan, all new to me. And the hacienda renovation movement is just going to grow. If you want to experience the cutting edge of wonderful, go stay at Casa Sisal, or book the entire Hacienda for your family and friends. You'll come home remembering how good it is to be alive!

Beautiful stay!

A group of girlfriends and I vacationed at this beautiful guest house for 5 days. We were all so impressed with the design of the house and grounds, the level of refinement and finish were incredible. The staff were all very kind, and William in particular helped us arrange a day trip to visit the best cenotes in the area. The location is great for days trips in the area, and also close/far enough from Merida to enjoy the downtown scene. Cyndy and her husband Howie were also incredibly welcoming and offered us a tour of their neighboring Hacienda. All together a perfect stay for groups or couples!

Magical

My family and I were overwhelmed by the beauty and perfection of the hacienda and casa sisal! The pictures are amazing and yet do no justice to just how perfect the place is. I rarely write reviews but we had a truly exceptional stay and appreciated each and every corner and detail.

Fabulous - made the trip for us

My family and I spent one week at Casa Sisal this April. The house and the grounds are truly spectacular. The house is very comfortable - beds are comfortable, kitchen well equipped with a grill outside, and a wonderful pool. The communal kitchen / living area is a breezeway that you can open, leave screened, or shut with glass sliding doors. The staff at the house is wonderful. The house is perfectly situated for day trips to surrounding ruins and towns. We definitely like the ruins, but our favorite thing to do was just drive through the small towns and see the churches and the bustling town markets, and to adventure into abandoned haciendas. We are also perfectly content just to lounge and relax at the house all day. We returned each day from our exploring to relax at the house, swim in the pool and hang out on the patio under the blooming plumeria. We would sit outside at night with a glass of wine and admire the fire fly show on the lawn and watch the stars come out. We are not done exploring the area and will definitely be back. Staying at Casa Sisal made the trip for us - to have such a fantastic place to return to at the end of each day and enjoy into the evening. By far one of the best places we have stayed.

Casa Sisal

The Hacienda Sac Chich is a stunningly beautiful and restored hacienda about 40 miles south of Merida. The main kitchen is large and well equipped, the bathrooms are numerous and large, the bedrooms are well furnished and quite comfortable, there are several lovely outdoor and indoor rooms for socializing, and a lovely small pool. The Hacienda offers a small staff for cleaning. Our Spanish language skills were limited, which constrained interactions. However, the staff was always friendly, charming, and helpful. The location is rural within a very tiny village close to a few somewhat larger villages. We liked the setting and it gave us a sense of the Yucatan apart from its wonderful tourist attractions. We were a group of all women and felt safe in the hacienda and taking walks around the countryside. We'd highly recommend a walk of Acanah, a village about a mile from the Hacienda, to experience its market. It is necessary to have a car to get into Merida and various sites like the Celestun Nature Preserve and the Uxmal Ruins. Our only concern during our wonderful stay was that hot water in several of the bathrooms was erratic. This was a relatively small inconvenience in an overall wonderful place.

Spectacular

My wife and two grown children absolutely loved our stay at Casa Sisal. Making the day trips we had planned became problematic for us as none of us wanted to leave the house. To say the house is beautiful does not do it justice. The layout, functionality and architectural design are stunning, and the house is even nicer than portrayed in the on line photos. The pool was gorgeous, as was the huge yard and large, open kitchen. The bedrooms and baths were large, beautiful and airy. We could not imagine a nicer place to stay.

Unique Peaceful Private Getaway

We'll always remember lounging in the pool at 9pm on the Fourth of July and watching the dusk fireflies play across the grass on all three sides of us--an unforgettable and unexpected private fireworks show! Casa Sisal is a study in contrasts: really remote and yet central to some great sights (Merida, Uxmal, Lulton Caves, Hacienda Sotuta de Peon), really quiet yet surprisingly loud (frogs), totally refined but with really rustic surroundings. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that you have to be the type of tourist who is looking for a unique experience. For my family it was the perfect fit. Our little kids had a wonderful time in the pool, exploring the grounds, and visiting the little bodega across the street to buy Mexican coca cola. My spouse and I mostly lounged. Good stuff....

Wonderful

My wife and two young boys stayed at Casa Sisal and loved it! The home is absolutely gorgeous and the town of Acanceh is charming. We had a fantastic, relaxing time. We did a few side trips but mostly just enjoyed the weather, the home and the pool. We will definitely be back!

Incredible!

We rented both houses on the property and we were blown away with the entire grounds. Case Sisal is an architectural masterpiece, every detail feels thought out and is wonderfully maintained. The pool is gorgeous, just lying next to it looking out at the perfectly manicured lawn bordered by large palm trees, with the old chimney of the hacienda above the walls around the lawn was heaven. We celebrated our wedding at Hacienda Sac Chich and stayed at Casa Sisal, Cyndy and her staff were amazing. We cannot recommend it more, it was a wonderful experience.

Yucatan retreat

This is a spot I would recommend for different reasons: 1st the location makes it easy to visit Yucatan with a quick access to the highway - 2nd the house is simply gorgeous and fully equipped 3rd last but not least ... there is a nice care of the guests from the owners with special attentions such as banana bred which I enjoyed particularly. WOW!!

Casa Sisal is a vacationer's dream! Peace, relaxation, splendor, and luxury is what you will find if you stay here. I loved lounging in the pool and looking out on the beautiful property and Mayan architecture. Perfect for a family or couple looking for a week away from the stresses of life. My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer!

Wonderful stay!

We just came back from a week at casa sisal. It was a dream! beautiful home and pool in those hot days were wonderful! very peaceful and was able to listen to all the birds throughout the day. By far the best place we have ever stayed! We even had a chance to watch thousands of lightning bugs in the grass at night :) Staff was there everyday to make us coffee or whatever we needed. So friendly and sweet :) felt very very safe the entire trip. Merida and izamal are a must see! I would rent a car so you can get around easy. Our first time to Mexico was one of the best vacations we've had at casa sisal :)

We spent a week celebrating Christmas in this stunning home. The photos really show the beauty of the home but experiencing the surrounding views and the exquisite lighting is truly magical. Design in paradise....

The house's pictures attracted us and when we arrived at Casa Sisal, what a shock! It was even better! The combination of the luxuriant nature, the old walls around, the grass so green and this beautiful design house was magic! Everything in the casa and outdoor was well thought and it was great to live there! The caretakers were helpful and so kind, they made our stay easier. Casa Sisal isn't so far from Merida, and it's very pleasant to come back home, after walking in this crowded town, to enjoy the peace of the house. the country around is beautiful, with many old deserted sisal factories to see and cenotes to go swimming.. Our stay in Casa Sisal was a fantastic experience!!!! We'll come back! Sure!

If you want to be away from everything

Sometimes pictures make things look better than they are in reality (working myself in marketing, have seen this dozens of times). But even the pictures of Casa Sisal are extremely beautiful they don't compare with the reality of being there, nothing but silence, "private" garden larger than a football field just for you and the home made Yucatecan food from the lovely ladies of the Hacienda Sac Chich staff. I still wonder why people would prefer a five star hotel to a private residence? Probably because they haven't experience this. Great for a romantic scape or to enjoy your family by the pool. Can't wait to go back again to Casa Sisal.

Great Place to Stay

Cyndy, we are back in Minnesota from our wonderful stay at your property. You and your husband have really created a special place there. I see what you mean, once you arrive you really never want to leave. Being in Real Estate I have the luxury of seeing some amazing properties, but yours is one of a kind. I can tell you we stayed at a fairly high end resort in Playa del carmen costing twice as much a day and the finishes in your place surpassed the hotel by far.

Casa Sisal Is Stunning!

My wife and I flew into Cancun from Milwaukee. After meeting our son, his wife, and their thirteen month old son at the airport (they flew in from New York City), we rented a car. The three hour drive via the toll road was pleasant and there was only light traffic. We stopped at a toll road service area for cappuccino and a rest room break. The coffee shop was called "Italian Coffee" and was similar to Starbucks. Casa Sisal is stunning! The pictures and owner's description are very detailed and accurate. Having said that, it was even nicer in person than we expected. We swam in the pool every day and enjoyed the two acre yard for Frisbee, etc. The staff was very helpful. We arrived to chips and homemade salsa as well as freshly baked banana bread. The house is large and well equipped. Everything that we needed was there for us. They even provided a "porta-play" type crib for the baby. The house served as a unique place to hang out as well as a base for nearby sights and activities. Within a 30 to 60 minute drive there are many Mayan ruins, cenotes, haciendas, convents and historic towns. We went to Merida (we liked Paseo Montejo which is a beautiful boulevard with old mansions); Cuzama Cenote (sadly we only had time to see and swim in one of the three cenotes there); the seaside town of Progreso (disappointing compared to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum); the nearby Hacienda Teya (we had a very nice lunch). We were only able to stay 3 nights at Casa Sisal and wish we could have stayed longer.

Being frequent visitors to the Pacific beaches and colonial central Mexico since the 70's we read about the restored haciendas of the Yucatan. In 2001 we went on the first of many "hacienda hopping" trips to the Yucatan. The grandeur, architectural scale, historical and economic relevance and process of restoration of these haciendas intrigued us and soon we were researching haciendas for sale on the internet. It wasn't until we rented a Hacienda for my 50th Birthday in 2003 that we experienced a sense of ownership while entertaining friends and family there. On that trip we toured hacienda Sac Chich, shortly thereafter made an offer and 5 months later it was ours. Sac Chich was the first and only hacienda we looked at for sale. In 2006 we purchased the drying field lands and in 2008 we began construction on Casa Sisal. Casa Sisal opens itself up to the magnificent sky and light of the Yucatan. It is comfortable, magical and serene.
We always knew we would someday have a home in Mexico, but always envisioned the Pacific coast or colonial interior. The Yucatan became the pure isolated uncomplicated Mexico that we remembered from travels 30 years ago.

Why they chose this property

Being at Casa Sisal is your opportunity to stop and reset. Surrounded by lush tropical jungle and architectural gems, sometimes you find yourself just sitting taking it all in. Relax in the pool, nap in a hammock, stroll the gardens.

If adventure is more your style, the area is famous for it's crystal blue cenotes (limestone underground swimming holes), Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza, and historical sites. Merida is a city rich with culture, magnificent architecture, award-winning restaurants, and cultural events.

Yucatan's beaches are calm and perfect for a day trip. Take a flamingo tour and follow up with fresh ceviche and a cold drink with your feet in the sand!
