About this property
Warmth & Care in Ethereal Zanskar
This home in the North of the Great Himalayan mountain range, is run by a very kindly elderly couple, looking for interesting company in this remote valley town of Padum.
The space
After the long and ardurous drive to Padum, the lovely couple, Abdul and his beautiful and friendly wife, make the entire drive worth your while. They serve some of the most close-to-nature food you would have ever tasted. The water is the purest, since it is right from the source. The butter and milk is home made from the 2 cows they breed. The vegetables are right from their own kitchen gardens.
Abdul is a keen to chat up and know about happening about the world. He welcomes keen discussions about world affairs, happenings in the business world and such.
His ever smiling wife is keen that you eat well and keep warm. If you do wake about 6am, you can accompany her to milk the cow.
Guest access
The house is carpeted floor to ceiling as you can expect in this cold region. Abdul likes to pass his time catching the latest on the news and sports channels, while his wife will lounge in front of the tele and witness Indian life through Bollywood films and soaps. You could share their in their screen time.
You would have a lovely bedroom to yourself. It is basic but comfortable, clean and warm. The shared bath, has both hot and cold water. I loved it as it overlooked the open expanse of the simple, scenic village.
The toilet is squatting Indian style one. Uncomfortable if you have not been to one before. But rather good for improving bowel movements due to your squatting position. :). Miniscule discomfort compared to the rest of the natural, untouched beauty around.
Other things to note
Driving/ Trekking through the Himalayan range is not for the feint hearted. Neither is it for the tough cookies. A desire and earnest want to travel through serene lands and see uncharted terrain before all the highways come up, is what drives us up there year after year.
This is the third time we are driving through the region. We drive in a 4x4 vehicle, over 2 weeks and cover about 2500+ kms. The first time we drive through, our daughter was 4 years old. If you have questions about your travel details, please drop us a line and we will be happy to guide you. You would of course be expected to do your research/ reading through the 100+ other resourceful sites available online.
Our aim with Artisanale Homes, is to connect traditional homes across India (and maybe one day, the world). Homes that bring out the essence of the family that grew up there. An honest place where you can just relax and not bother about getting fancy bills or being served that is not grown/ sold locally. We want to bring together travellers and owners looking for mutual respect and understanding.
