About this property
Soulful, light-filled Berkshire home with gardens
Our beautifully renovated Victorian is located in Housatonic, a hamlet of Great Barrington and only 10 minutes to the center of town, 15 minutes from Lenox, Shakespeare and Co., Barrington Stage and Tanglewood and 35 from Jacob's Pillow. Also, just 20 minutes to Butternut Ski Basin. Our house is full of light and warmth, with an open floor plan downstairs plus a yoga/writing room, and three cozy light-filled bedrooms upstairs. The curved Victorian style front porch provides cool repose in summer with comfy sofas and loads of plants, as well as Moroccan lights for romantic warm summer evenings. The back deck is spacious with a hot tub, picnic table, a full sofa set with an awning that can be rolled in and out and a hammock. Our open, fenced-in lawn has a fire pit and full vegetable and flower gardens as well as plenty of room for pick-up soccer or frisbee as well as two Adirondack chairs under the peach tree. If you have children, you can close the gate and feel secure that they will stay contained from the road, which has almost no traffic. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly, and the village of Housatonic - with its cafe, restaurant, post office, playground, library, liquor store and gas station - is just a short walk down the hill.
Our taste is a mix of global and country - though it is difficult to put a life's worth of love into a box? Color and texture, love and layers mark each space, with artwork and green plants in all seasons. You will feel that you are in a home filled with light, history, beauty and love.

About the host
Hosted by Anni Crofut

We are an international couple (Mel is Indonesian and I am from the Berkshires) who spends time in both countries, but The Yellow House is our primary residence. We are nesters by nature and put a lot of love into our home. We also love to experience other peoples' homes and this, I think, helps us to be good hosts. We know what it means to feel held and welcomed by a space.
Why they chose this property
Housatonic was a mill town and this is what gives it such a unique character. The river runs through its center, surrounded by the iconic handsome mill buildings. The homes are varied because they were originally built to house both workers and mill owners, so you have simple modest homes right alongside grand and elegant ones. The village has a neighborhood feel, and is not gentrified - such a rare thing these days. We love the quiet intimacy of our neighborhood, while a tea shop, restaurant, post office, liquor store, and library are right down the hill.
What makes this property unique
Our property is on a 'double lot' - meaning the land area is twice as large as the surrounding properties. So we have the luxury of a generous lawn and gardens while still being in a cozy neighborhood. The exterior of our house has the charm and intrigue of a Victorian, while the interior is open and light-filled due to our renovations (unlike many Victorians). The curved front porch is especially lovely for intimate morning tea and evening drinks, while the back porch is more expansive and open to the garden.
