Some disappointments

A modest two bedroom house in a subdivision of similar houses. Nicely decorated. Perfect for two people. Quiet and well situated for easy access to JTNP. We came to explore the park We left early in the morning and returned after dark. So we didn't have time for house issues. First disappointment was the hot tub was not usable upon arrival. It was ice cold, low on water and smelled funky. There were no written instructions regarding its use. The owner was very good about sending someone over to service it but we couldn't use it until our last day. As a listed amenity, it should have been up and running upon arrival. Worse was the kitchenware. Every plate, glass, utensil and pan we took from the cupboards was greasy or dirty. There is no dishwasher. There was dish washing liquid but no sponge/scrubby with which to wash anything. We had to wash everything before using it. Gross! The shower/tub was not clean. There were soiled washcloths draped on the faucet and piled on the edge of the tub, and hair stuck to the shower walls. Made us wonder what else wasn't cleaned. And there weren't any clean washcloths for us to use. We found the washer/dryer in the garage. Although the door was unlocked, it seemed clear to us that this was not an area for guest use. The area around the machines was not clean and both machines had laundry in them. If you list it as an amenity, it should be accessible and available for use upon arrival. And clean!

Nice/Clean Place, Good Location, Well Appointed, Nice Host

Loved this place! It was in great condition, VERY clean, nice decorations. The kitchen was well outfitted, and the coffee/cream/pods/beans were very much appreciated. The fire pit was wonderful. Jacuzzi was great, but be sure you get instructions on how to set it up. Great outdoor seating area with the hammocks, lounge chairs, bench (for dining) and L couch as well. Didn't use the gas grill but it looked nice as well. Beds were all comfortable, and the mini-split A/C worked nicely for the whole house. The back-yard view was very nice, looking into a mountain with a small road in the distance. You can turn off the Christmas lights and it's super dark, saw lots of shooting stars. Very close to the visitors center and Joshua Tree entrance. The host was very nice and very responsive as well!

As listed but not quite

Rented this unit because of advertised large backyard with hot tub and washer dryer. Hot tub smelled and hadn't been ran for some time. Asked the host about the washer and dryer, was told "I don't normally let guests use those". House was clean but about 105 degrees inside. The AC was a small unit on the wall that put out minimal cool air. We had to open the windows wide to let the 90 degree outdoors cool things off. About 10 pm the AC unit made a terrible noise and a goodish amount of frozen bits of water fell onto the floor. I turned it off, it was the only fan/ventilation in the front room/ kitchen/ dining room area. It became very warm very quickly. In the morning I made coffee, went to get dressed. When I came back there were ants everywhere in the sink and on the counter surrounding the towel I had dried my hands upon. They were coming from under the counter. I went back into the bathroom and found a line of ants coming out from under the tub, headed for the droplets of water on the floor. I called the owner and told him of the ants, he told me to make sure the doors and windows were closed and to not leave any water or food bits about. He claimed he had had ants once when he lived there. There were no signs of ant traps or spray anywhere. The house was so badly under air-conditioned that leaving doors and windows closed would have rendered it an oven. The ants, the lack of adequate AC (it was 95 outside) and the smelly hot tub all added up to an unpleasant overnight stay. We had booked for 3 nights but checked out of there to the local chain hotel. Owner tried to bargain with me, "I know people in the area, I can find you a place to stay", but I was just done. This was my first (and last) experience with VRBO.
