Fantastic

Starry Hill exceeded our expectations. The house and property were beautiful and well appointed. We lacked for nothing during our stay. Our kids loved running around the yard and playing with the basket of toys. My wife and I enjoyed looking at the stars and enjoying a fire at night. The area is great. Easy access to Woodstock and everything VT has to offer. Would go back again in a heartbeat.

Barnard, VT and the Log Home

For those who like a well-situated, quiet, and wood home this is a wonderful place. The house is located at the end of a longish drive in lovely woods. We were there during a winter snow storm and low temperatures. The wood stove worked well as did the oil heaters. The house is well-maintained and we couldn't be more pleased with the owner's attention to making the house feel like a home. The Woodstock\Barnard area is terrific for walking, skiing, swimming. Woodstock is well-known for its stores, the Billings farm, restaurants, farmers' market, etc. We highly recommend this home for a vacation.

Wonderful Vacation--Fabulous House

Our family makes an annual trip to the area with another family. It's one of the only times we see them each year, and is very special to both of our families. We were looking for a place where we would all be comfortable and be able to relax and enjoy ourselves, and Heidi's home provided just that spot. The house is lovingly built, furnished and decorated, with everything you could possibly need available. It's clean and cozy and just a happy, wonderful place. The screened in porch is THE BEST--when we weren't at Silver Lake Park at the beach, we spent most of our time out there eating, playing board games, and watching our children run around outside, searching for toads and playing geologist together--heaven. The house is a fabulous place for a quiet summer vacation away from the hubbub of the world. Heidi is a kind and gracious hostess--we loved our week and will always treasure the memories.

Our long weekend at The Starry Hill House was wonderful! The house is beautiful! The craftsmanship and love that Heidi and her family put into building this home is apparent in every room! From the hidden bookshelves that bracket the woodstove in the living room to the pocket doors that create 2 private spaces in the bathroom, Heidi didn’t miss an opportunity to make this home one of a kind! We spent the majority of our time playing games and reading on the screen porch. Heidi provides a drawer of candles so we were able to create a cozy, romantic atmosphere while we unplugged and enjoyed eachother’s company. My husband and I both commented on the comfort of the bed and sheets and with the cool breeze blowing in and the song of the cicadas, we had rejuvenating sleep every night! Do yourself a favor and visit Heidi’s home. She was very attentive and wonderful to work with!

Exquisite Home and Setting

My college roommate and I booked this September stay in June. The place looked wonderful online, but one never knows for sure. It was every bit as advertised and more. Heidi made every effort to help us arrive easily, gave us a first-class tour of her home, as well as helped us start the fire in the woodstove the first night. We had a fabulous week, and though we prepared for much colder weather, the 70's and 80's that greeted us were welcome. In particular, I loved the porch, and we enjoyed coffee, breakfast and even dinner out there. The kitchen was better equipped than anyone can imagine. The beds were comfy, and the luxury of a wood-burning fire nightly was divine. It helped us rest up and catch up. We saw the Vermont Country Store, explored downtown Woodstock and Quechee, had great meals at Fire Stone's, Bentley's and Prince and the Pauper. We drove, drove, drove to see Bennington, Middlebury, Dartmouth and the mountains and valleys of Vermont. It was a grand time--one I will not soon forget. Thanks! Gail

Magical Winter Wonderland

We stayed at Heidi's house over our winter break and I can't say enough about it. The house is stunning and lovingly cared for. It is tucked away in the woods at the end of a long, winding driveway. Inside the home all of the rooms are incredibly comfortable. The bedrooms are large, cozy and peaceful. It was the perfect size for our two families – my brothers and mine – with one of the bedrooms sleeping the kids. The living room has a beautiful wood-burning fireplace and the most comfortable easy-chairs and sofa. And the kitchen and dining area are great for entertaining. We tried to spend as much time as possible at the house given how magical it was. We played outside sledding down the driveway and building a family of snowmen and a snow igloo. We spent a lot of time as a family together just relaxing by the fireplace – playing games, chatting and reading. We also enjoyed cooking some lovely dinners together in the well-stocked kitchen. Heidi had everything you needed from sleds to games to extra blankets. And then of course there is Heidi – so warm, kind, dynamic and welcoming – just a really great person. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone and would love to plan another vacation there. It is a home away from home, built for relaxation.

Experience the best now from times past

Kerstin and I celebrated our twentieth wedding anniversary at Heidi Marie's elegant log home. Best decision I could have made! The four-week stay was superb in every way! Much more was provided as amenities and personal attention to detail than in all my experiences over the many years renting houses and cabins for family gatherings throughout the US and in Europe. Heidi's warm greetings and attentive service, perfect location, great facilities, cleanliness, large rooms with well-appointed colonial decor furnishings and woodwork, makes you feel like you have taken an excursion back to a gentler time and place. Here are some special aspects to our stay: 1. Really quiet- esp. at night. Nice dark adjustable window shades 2. Ceiling fans throughout for warm nights. Portable ac for a bdrm 3. Front screened porch with perimeter lighting and giant swing is awesome 4. State-of-the-art kitchen with gourmet gas stove/oven and IR warming shelf, amble custom cabinetry, bread/pastry rolling counter, large frig, micro, fully stocked with spices and utensils/dishes and colorful ceramic bowls/mugs/plates, wine/beer glasses, etc 5. Light dimmers in every room to create mood lighting 6. Double sink bathrooms, custom cabinetry, even a back-lite makeup mirror 7. Superb hiking is everywhere. Take Prosper turnoff from Rt 12 and hike to the Pogue and then to Mt Tom south peak to see Woodstock from above- pick black and rasp berries at the Red Cedar Loop. 8. Want really good microbrew? Long Trail even has tours, and there's Harpoon for you Leviathon and Rye IPA lovers 9. King Arthur baking Institute/store is 40 minutes away. Take a class 10. Simon Pierce glass (two stores close by). Quechee store has a fab restaurant- get the Cheddar soup! 11. Quechee Gorge and Quechee Green are good scenic excursion walking areas 12. MUST VISIT (and buy from): Woodstock Elm Street Butcher, Gen Store, and the Phlox clothing & accessories for the ladies (they even sell Swedish embroidered jewelry made from reindeer hide & pewter thread) 13. You'll find the world's best Cheddar cheese anywhere We could not have had a better four week experience anywhere. Always something amazing to do. Heidi Marie is tops as owner and hostess, SIX Star recommendation. Thanks Heidi, you made our Twentieth Anniversary a very special one.

Awesome

My wife and I rented Starry Hill for the entire month of October for our first trip to Vermont. It fulfilled our dreams of a comfortable cabin/house in the woods. Locals said the tree color was the most vivid ever and the weather was unusually wonderful. We loved it. Heidi and Robert were fantastic hosts. We have stayed at many VRBOs and B&Bs around the country. This was definitely one of the best.

Cozy cabin close to Woodstock

We had the most amazing girlfriends weekend at Starry Hill! It is truly a special place. The home itself is cozy but spacious, and you can't beat the privacy. The drive to downtown Woodstock is quick and scenic. Even though the listing pictures are accurate, we were not prepared for the overall atmosphere; it was absolutely magical. The house is a perfect mix of old and new. Before we checked out we were already planning a return trip!

We Love Starry Hill! Perfect VT Getaway

I cannot say enough about Starry Hill, what a beautiful home it is, and what great hosts Heidi and Robert were. The house, linens, and kitchenware were all very clean. I am no neat freak but this means a lot when on vacation. The beds were more than comfortable, the house had everything you needed to cook, get cozy, keep warm, play games with family and friends, take hikes during the day and visit Woodstock in under 10 minutes. We visited over a beautiful weekend in November but would like to return in all seasons!

October 21 Vermont

When we arrived we found a rustic and stunning log cabin high on a hill. The inside looked like a 18th century cottage. Very spacious and charming. Our hosts Heidi and Robert were very friendly and accommodating. The location was perfect. Woodstock is charming but extremely busy in October with the fall foliage. This place was close enough to see everything but secluded enough for privacy. We hope to visit again in the future. Thanks Heidi and Robert!

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful and spacious home with us. Absolutely loved the screened in porch area. Loved the seating areas in each bedroom, next time we will take advantage of those quaint areas. Beautiful living room…I’m sure in the winter time it will be used. Note to future renters - don’t go food shopping until you see what spices, oils and assorted miscellaneous items might already be there! Great assortment of pots, pans and dishes! Thank you!

Had a short and wonderful stay! House is charming and comfy. The location of the house made for easy day trips to Manchester and Burlington. About the host

Hosted by Robert & Heidi

Host profile image
Meet Robert & Heidi, your hosts extraordinaire! This husband & wife team live just 14 minutes away, and are readily available to make sure your time spent at Starry Hill is amazing. Combine Robert's ready smile and keen fix-it & tractor skills with Heidi's warmth and flare for hospitality, and you're sure to enjoy a "five-star rated stay." Read through the reviews; Heidi's guests have enjoyed Starry Hill since Heidi began solo in 2011. Heidi: she's an ordinary woman with an extraordinary tale having worked beside her (now late) husband, Paul, their master-carpenter friend, Randy, plus Heidi's three children to build their dream solid-timber house on these serene, forested 24.5 acres. Thrown into this project quite by a surprise of Providence, Heidi realized in those years of 'family logging', sawing up the felled white Eastern pine on a portable sawmill, and 3-years of building, that only by testing a dream can you know if you have been given both the faith, perseverance, and grit to complete that dream. What began as her own home is now a uniquely peaceful and beautiful sanctuary to share with those in search of respite and sanctuary from the demands of the "buzz & beep" world we live in. Come and experience the magic of Starry Hill!

Why they chose this property

You will find peaceful seclusion here: a uniquely beautiful, green-built home nestled among 24.5 acres of sugar-maple laden forest, yet easy access to Vermont Rte. 12 just 1400 feet down the mountainside driveway. Quintessential Woodstock is 5 miles south, Silver Lake and the Historic Barnard General Store 4 miles north, Mt. Tom hiking and horseback trails 3 miles south, and Hanover, NH and Dartmouth College 23 miles east. Northern Stage and the Lebanon Opera House are 22 miles east. Killington ski mountain is 40 min. away. Woodstock Inn's family-friendly Saskadena Six ski area is only 10 minutes away.

What makes this property unique

After hundreds of guests and eleven + years of vacation renting, Heidi has heard nothing but 'Wow--better than the photos!' The network of trails on the mountainside behind the house allow for true nature communing & seasonal berry-picking right outside your door. Comments left in Heidi's guest book and the solid 5-star posted reviews on two listing sites say it all. Heidi has accommodated varied guests: families with children, couples wanting a romantic getaway, weekend skier groups, and everyone in between, each group leaving behind rave reviews about the home, the peaceful setting, the hiking trails, the re-connection to family and friends, and the entire blissful experience.
