My wife and I stay for a long weekend, had a great time! Anything you might need is provided, watched the sun rise over the lake right from the dinning table, enjoyed the gas fireplace at night. Off the beaten path but not really 5min and your on the main drag with a multitude of stores. I'm sure its even nicer in the warm weather.
What we enjoyed the most, besides the beautiful cottage, amenities, and location, was the Lake.
The calmness of the early morning views, and the easy accessibility, just to name a few. And of course, the incredible variety of birds, and their beautiful birdsongs. Our favorite was listening to calls of the loons echoing across the lake.
Very nice house off the beaten path, yet close enough to all activities. Nestled in the woods on a lake made for very relaxing down time. Beds were super comfortable which was a huge plus. Perfect stay!
Excellent accommodations, wish we had stayed longer! Nice to be a short drive from the city, and at the same time be in a nice quiet woodsy area right on the lake! We loved the games area downstairs, and enjoyed boating with the kayaks and paddle boat provided. Lovely view of the lake from the kitchen /dining area. Excellent communications with the host.
We had a wonderful 3-week stay at this comfortable lakeside home. Quiet location on a beautiful lake, easy drive to Portland city and airport. Lots of towns and nature walks to explore. Donna is very available and hospitable. Two king size beds is a bonus. Highly recommend!
This lakeside home was comfortable, roomie, and exceeded our expectations. With updated finishes and a lot of kitchen and living space, this was the perfect space for a group of girls!
We visited in February for some winter R & R and the house didn't disappoint! It was spotless and had everything we needed to make a snow day cozy and fun! We went snow tubing about 15 minutes down the road and although the lake wasn't frozen enough for skating, we found a great indoor ice rink about 15 minutes away. The house is located about 30 minutes north of the Portland waterfront, yet it feels like a world away. Restaurants and a grocery store are only about 10-15 minutes away, too.
We loved the location on the pretty and peaceful lake. It was relaxing and we enjoyed just sitting and enjoying the view. There weren’t many places nearby to get food, but we enjoyed going to Portland for meals. Having to do laundry on the checkout day felt rushed and it would have been better if we’d had a little bit later checkout time to allow for that and also if it had been communicated in advance. We would have chosen to bring our own linens if we’d known.
When we arrived the host greeted us I was surprised to find we had to make our own beds strip them wash and dry all sheets and towels before leaving put sheets back folded on bed alot of work for vacation I am very used to stripping beds snd putting used towels together but not doung the laundry. Too many signs and rules hanging everywhere you look very threatening message about being out of house by 10 even though you have lots of house work to do
Beautiful location nice house not a welcoming atmosphere
Peaceful and scenic Lakeside getaway near Portland, Maine
Our family had a nice relaxing retreat at this lakeside cottage. The house itself was cozy with knotty pine walls throughout. The new kitchen had basics of you would want/need to cook meals (no cookie sheet, no liquid measuring cup) and we cooked most of our food at the house and on the outdoor grill. Our girls enjoyed swimming in the lake (which was clean and warm), jumping off the trampoline floating dock, reading and kayaking. We delighted in listening to the calls of the loons in the evening. Regarding house: basement area was spacious and had its own small full bathroom and a completely separate small bedroom with a door and lock on it with a King Sized bed. (Mattress was comfortable and firm). Master bedroom on main floor was more spacious and had a pretty comfortable mattress as well. Second bedroom on main floor has 3 twin beds - one is a top bunk. Lovely views of the lake from the living room area! The owners lived next door - only about 50 feet away from the property line - and were gracious: they even offered us the use of their lake floats, which we appreciated. This proximity of homes also impacted privacy outdoors and occasionally resulted in hearing loud noise (when outdoors) to include lawn mowers, power washers, and construction sounds in the area - that said, we are used to going to Squam Lake where the homes are secluded, seasonal and it is very quiet whereas this is an area where many people live full time. There was no tourist info (maps, etc.) in the cottage when we arrived so be prepared to find out what's around before you arrive. There was a Hannaford Supermarket 4 miles away down the Main Road (#302) - very convenient! Portland was about 8 miles away and we enjoyed several trips there to outdoor restaurants and to a schooner ride on the Casco Bay. The internet did not work well for everyone - it worked perfectly on mobile phones but not on the laptop computers which caused some issues with taking online college classes. Never figured out how to work second television in basement - no instructions were left and couldn't connect to wifi on that either. Upstairs television was youtube tv and you could connect to amazon prime and Netflix etc. Didn't have most "regular" channels like CNN, ABC, etc but we didn't care. Overall, a nice, clean and spacious place to enjoy lakeside living and the owners were exceptionally accommodating. Enjoy!
We spent Thanksgiving weekend in this charming lake house with our family and had such a great time! The home is clean and well-maintained, the kitchen is fully stocked with anything you’d need to prepare meals, and the beds are comfortable. The owners went above and beyond to make this a comfortable stay for us, checking in to make sure that we had all that we needed for our Thanksgiving dinner. We enjoyed being in such a beautiful setting with easy access to Portland. You can’t go wrong renting this home!
Cozy cabin right on the lake. It has everything you need for a comfortable get away at the lake. Great location near Portland with convenient grocery stores nearby. Also ease of travel to the northern coast of Maine. It has it all.

About the host
Hosted by Donna Pennoyer
We moved here from Portland when the kids were little and plan on staying here to watch our grandchildren enjoy our lake My children grew up making fairy houses in the woods and catching salamander and learning to waterski in their front yard. My husband favorite quote is 'We live here!'
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this view the minute we saw it. With in a few months of us buying our house, the camp next door became available so we bought it and became the proud owner of two properties on Highland Lake. We are close enough to enjoy Portland and all it offers and still be able to relax at the end of the day and feel like we are miles away from work.
What makes this property unique
Nothing is better than sitting by the fire and watching the moon rise over the tree. In the winter , if mother nature cooperates, you can cross country ski, ice fish, snow shoe or take a long walk down the lake. In the off seasons I am flexible with the checkout time and the cleaning fee. If you want to leave it clean and forgo the cleaning fee. Please check with me. Thanks
