About this property

The Card's Nest Rental Cabin on Lake in Wooded Area

The Card's Nest rental cabin is nestled in the woods located on Gorrel lake. Gorrel lake provides a very nice, private setting. There are only 3 dwellings located on the entire lake. The property is adjacent to Merrill Lake County Park, which provides a place for the children to play, including a playground and swimming beaches on two lakes within walking distance. Located near the Pier Marquette snowmobile trail, The Card's Nest offers something for every season. Nature abounds in the surrounding woods, and is great for spotting birds, animals, and just enjoying nature.

We provide a fully furnished cabin, you need only bring your personal items and towels. A rowboat, two kayaks, and a paddle boat are provided. These can be launched from our small private sandy area, or tied to the dock during your stay.

The kitchen area has cast iron sink, range, and refrigerator. We also provide a 'beer and bait' refrigerator in the downstairs entranceway. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes, pots, pans, utensils, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and more.

Bedroom 1 downstairs has a double bed, rustic pine furniture (locally crafted) and a beautiful view of the lake. Bedroom 2 has a double bed. Bedroom 3 provides a double bed and twin bunk beds. There are two double sized futons in family room.

Outdoor area provides a large deck overlooking the lake. There is a charcoal grill, as well as a fire pit with cooking grates. Build in benches and a picnic table provide seating around the deck and firepit area. There is a balcony off the upper floor that offers beautiful views of the lake and woods.

While this is a remote setting, basic needs can be met in Barryton, less than 10 minutes away, and a larger town is only 15 minutes away.

Our weekly rentals run from Sunday to Sunday.

A Great escape to a rustic little cabin on the lake.
It's a great little property tucked in a very quiet corner. If you're looking to unplug and get off the grid for a few days, this is the place.

Cozy and comfy on the lake
Cabin had exactly what we needed for our family vacation. Played games nightly and fished during the day. Plenty of lake activities with boats/kayaks on site. Also access to campground that cabin rest within gave us plenty of things to do. Took a few day trips and checked out the local towns. A pretty good vacation spot if your trying to get down time. Caught multiple Bass and landed a nice one right from the dock. Also saw a lot of young bucks in the area and lots of deer to be seen. Stay here if you want to relax.

Quiet and relaxing
fishing is great (son 16). I totally enjoyed reading books in the hammock and being able to relax and see the water to watch him fish. NOT having internet is also kinda great. So much out door time and board games!!!

50th bday get away
I liked how the property was tucked away on the side of a campground. Everything was great about the cabin, except when we came in, whoever stayed there previous to us left the futon with dirt and gross stains on it. I understand this may not be in the scope of the cleaning crew. We improvised and used a bed cover for it.

Amazing
We had rain most everyday and even a tornado warning and with all that we loved our stay. Boys fished everyday and in the rain. I watched, read books, grilled out and relaxed. The house had everything we needed. My son-14 year old- has requested we go back. Loved having the kayaks, paddle boat and row boat. It was peaceful- we played board games and watched DVD's during our down time

Perfect family retreat!
A quiet, peaceful lake! We had plenty of space to spread out and so many activities. The kids loved to dig in the sand, wade in the water, learn to paddle in the kayaks and practice casting with a fishing pole. We enjoyed nature walks to the other road/entrance collecting seeds. We observed the signs of beavers (e.g., tree trunks and dam). We enjoyed a nice fire in the firepit and stargazed and listened to loons at night. The house was was well-stocked from cooking pans in great condition to a variety of cleaning supplies to a clothesline to jigsaw puzzles and games (for the one rainy day we had) to birding and other nature manuals. We were a bit nervous when we discovered that our "neighbors" were an almost full campground. However, the mostly retired, seasonal campers were kind, friendly, and gave us space to interact as much or little as we desired. Also, the cabin layout in the photos was confusing. It made more sense when I arrived and read that the rooms upstairs were a later edition, thus the kitchen is in the "basement" or original level of the cabin. Not a problem. Our older family members used the inclined boardwalk to enter from the lower level instead of the steep stairs inside. We will definitely keep the Card's Nest in mind for future vacations!

Decent place but understand your surroundings
We were trying to seek out a rustic cabin on a lake. While the Cards Nest is just that, we were unaware that the cabin was part of a camp ground. The pictures of the property conveniently leave out that part. I quickly noticed that all of the pictures only show one side of the property; the lakeside. When we communicated with the owner, we specifically asked about the privacy of the lot and what the surroundings were like. We were told "the only neighbor is a PARK." It was not a park; it was a campground full of people. I felt like this was intentionally miscommunicated. The lake side of the cabin feels private due to a privacy fence, but you can't really sprawl out in that area because it's full of tables and benches, plus it's on a hill. The lake fishing is not good. You would think it would be full of big bass but it is not. All of the fish are small and there are not many. The shower had no water pressure after a while. The cabin itself is cozy enough, but not the nicest place we've stayed. We make this same "guys trip" every summer. We probably won't come back here.

Perfect for our extended family!
Supper cute cottage in beautiful setting. Our group of 11 made use of all the boats and the swimming beach next door. Cottage was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals for a large group. Enjoyed fishing, nature walks in the woods and beautiful star filled nights around the fire pit. Perfect place to unplug and unwind! Liked the camp ground setting along with the private lakefront and spacious multi-level yard. Entering and exiting through the camp ground is most convenient. Stop and buy your day use pass when you arrive. I was confused on that point. Watching the local beaver was an extra treat.

Cool place for a cabin, a bit more rustic than I expected
I agree with the owner- the easiest way to get to the cabin is thru the campground. It’s nice that the campers closest to this property are long term rentals- we barely knew they were there. We took advantage of the nice beaches at the campground. The one on Merrill Lake is the largest- very nice, has sandy bottoms. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking and the outdoor areas. For the price, I thought it was dirty. My wife would not have found it acceptable.

Great location for outdoor activites
My kids were wanting to be outside and on the lake and this was a great location for that. My teenagers had a blast! We all appreciated the attention given to the outdoor areas. We ate outside for almost every meal. The kids spent almost all of the trip on the lake, had success fishing and enjoyed the hammock!

Wonderful place for our family
We were a family of 6 adults and three children, and found this place just right for us. Jay was quick to reply to any questions and though the place wasn't super clean when we arrived, we were OK with it. The 6 and 4 year old immediately began fishing and caught fish right away (as did we all over the 4 days). The lake is quiet and peaceful, great for little ones to have some freedom to paddleboat, and we used the kayaks and canoe a lot. Appreciated that the place was well-stocked with kitchen stuff including some food, and even had some bait in the extra fridge. Would go to the Card's Nest again.

Not what we expected.
We were very disappointed with the maintenance of this cabin. Upon arrival, we noticed how dirty the interior was. (Urine stains on outside of the toilet, dirt and chip crumbs on the top bunk, chip bags, water bottles, and a pillow left under the beds and living room futon. It also looked unswept and unvacuumed.) The lighting was very dim, one of the wheels on the vacuum was broken making it hard to push, and they had a dollar store broom with a broken handle for us to use in the kitchen. Most of the kitchen pans had Teflon that was scraped very badly, making them unusable to us. They advertised a gas grill for us to use if we would bring our own propane, which we did, but the self ignitions were all broken and the burners/covers were rusted and broken only allowing a very small flame to come out, making it useless for our family of 9. The first blanket we pulled out of the trunk stocked with extra bedding, was dirty and dead leaves fell out on the floor when we unfolded it. The extra queen mattress pad that we wanted to put on the futon had blood stains on it. It had been washed, but the stains were still there. We were required to bring our own bath linens, but the owners only supplied 2 dish towels for our whole week. We couldn't keep them dry and there were no laundry machines to dry them with. The coffee maker was dirty and it badly leaked water all over the counter each morning when we used it, soaking everything within 2 feet. There was a large list of cleaning requirements left for us with the threat of not returning our deposit if not done. (Including: vacuum, sweep, fold blankets and comforters, empty trash cans, wipe down the bathroom...) To top it off, when we made bacon the last morning and the kitchen filled with smoke, we noticed that the fire alarm battery was dead this whole time! As we left the cabin, 2 of us got stung by the bees that had a nest under the front porch. On a good note, the lake was very private and we loved spending time as a family out on the lake and having campfires.
