Lovely Getaway

My husband and I had a lovely stay together at the Avera Clarke Bed and Breakfast. Brooke was so easy to work with and went out of her way to make sure that we were comfortable and satisfied with our time there. We appreciated her so very much! Wonderful romantic place to getaway and we would love to come back with our children as a family.

Cute & Convenient

We were in town for a gravel bike ride. The hosts graciously allowed us to wash up after the ride well past usual check-out time. Brooke was super nice and accommodating. And she makes a mean banana bread!

8-Night Stay at the Avera-Clarke B&B

We stayed 8 nights in the cottage at the Avera-Clarke House, and we would like to echo the other reviewers that Brooke is an awesome hostess (as is her Mom)! She is warm and welcoming and makes the most delicious breakfasts (see the photos below). The cottage was quiet and comfortable and has a good-size kitchenette. The air conditioner and ceiling fans were just what we needed on the warm and humid Florida nights. Sitting on the front porch watching the afternoon rain showers was therapeutic on many levels. The Avera-Clarke House is just a short walk to downtown Monticello where there are many more coffee shops and antique stores than when I grew up there. Everyone we met was pleasant and proud of their town with the mossy oaks and the riots of flowers. We hope you enjoy staying at the Avera-Clarke House in Monticello as much as we did.

Calling all Moms and Dads who need a break!!

Do you ever just need the right amount of relaxation and quiet to recharge yourself? Look no further! This quaint and quiet cottage has everything you need for a short little getaway or a week long stay. The perfect oversized tub gives you plenty of space to unwind an soak the stress away. The bed was so incredibly comfortable, clean and cozy!! The charm this place has from the fireplace to the beautiful old wood floors is just perfect for that "homey" feel. Outside on the porch is a swing and some patio furniture for you to enjoy the garden area between the B&B and the cottage. The owners were incredibly helpful from recommending eateries to even giving us a tour of the beautiful B&B! We were even offered free cup of coffee, wine or beer and given some historical info about the house which we loved of course! And very convenient that we were about 15 min from Thomasville, GA or about 25 min from Tallahassee. Gave us options if we wanted to explore. We would stay here again, no questions asked!

Great place to stay in Monticello!!!

I travel occasionally for business to Monticello. I needed somewhere to stay locally and the cottage was available. I booked it and Brooke was very attentive and communicative in regards to my stay. The cottage was awesome. They have done a great job of keeping the charm of its history while making sure it is cozy. I highly recommend this as a place to stay and Brooke is an amazing host.

Son’s Wedding Getaway

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Brooke was very responsive and helpful. We also enjoyed walking into town for shopping and site seeing. The cottage is so cozy and comfortable and has the best bathroom of any B&B that we have stayed at.

Why they chose this property

The Avera-Clarke House was built in 1890 by Judge Thomas Clarke, a civil war veteran who fought in the Battle for Atlanta. After the Civil War ended, he studies law in Georgia, came to Monticello in the late 1800’s to open a law practice, was a signor on the Second Florida Constitution, and founded the Farmers and Merchants Bank (FMB has since been bought out by The First Bank, but was one of the oldest independent banks in Florida). His son, S.D. Clarke, also became a judge and was the last Clarke to occupy the house. S.D. Clarke was President of the Florida Senate for many years during the mid 1900’s and ran the infamous “Pork Chop” Gang in Florida politics.

The Cottage, reputed to be the oldest structure in Jefferson County (approx. 1821), was moved to the property in January 2006 where it was fully restored (by the Avera’s). Originally known as, “The Old Robert’s House”, was located one block southeast of the Courthouse and was the home of one of the first postmasters in Jefferson County. The house was scheduled to be torn down before its rescue, but the Avera’s were able to preserve the 900 sq. ft. free standing structure that features a sitting room, queen size bed, full kitchen, and a full bath and 2 half
bathrooms. The ceiling is original, which is made of hand-hewn lumber.

What makes this property unique

Monticello is located in Jefferson County, the heart of “the Olde Florida”, one of rolling hills and stately, moss-draped oaks. Situated mid-way between Jacksonville and Pensacola, it is the only county that extends from Georgia on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south. Monticello, with a population of 2,600 residents, is Jefferson Count’s seat of government.

Located just 23 miles from Tallahassee, the state capital, Monticello is the perfect example of a walkable community. The town offers stately 19th century homes, bed and breakfast inns, antique shops, an Opera House (circa 1890), an art gallery, easy access to government offices, and several restaurants situated around a unique “roundabout”, showcasing the Jefferson County Courthouse (circa 1909) in the town center. Many of these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These structured represent some of the best architectural styles of the 1800’s, and most are still in use today.

Our town is considered “the Most Haunted Small Town in America” complete with ghost tours, and documented photo siting’s.
