About this property

On 'The New River Trail'

This 1800 Sq. foot home is located in the historic mill town of Fries, VA. The beautiful New River flows by our small village on it's way up north. 'The New River Trail' follows the river from Fries to Pulaski for over fifty miles. It is a 'Rails to Trails' project for bikers, hikers and horses. There is very little incline or decent and you will find trestles, a tunnel, beautiful wild flowers, shoals and lots of cool shade in mostly secluded deep woodlands. The fishing is great along with canoeing, tubing and kayaking.

Blue Grass Music is plentiful with The Galax Fiddlers Convention and Fries Fiddlers Convention the second and third weeks in August.

The house is only 14 miles from the most visited National Park, 'The Blue Ridge Parkway' and the Blue Ridge Music Center.

For those of you with wonderlust there are lots of narrow dirt and paved roads with pastures, mountains, creeks and valleys to explore.

Great spot to enjoy music and biking

We had a wonderful stay at Nanas place in Fries. The house is lovely and a great place to relax after a long day of riding. We also enjoyed the proximity to live music as we were able to experience the Thursday night Jam at the Theater in Fries and a wonderful concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center on the Parkway. Will definitely consider staying at Nanas Place again!

Great location! Very nicely decorated. We parked behind the house via the alleyway.

Loved meeting Richard. He came to the rescue when we were cold. Rachel was great at responding to questions. Loved being abke to sit on front pirch this morning and enjoy our coffee. If you are in the area this is a great place to stay. We rode bikes on the New River Trail. Went and found the two tunnels. We had a great time for 67 to 73 year olds!

Relaxing

This was the perfect place to stay. The owners were so nice. The house is well appointed with everything you need! My 2 Sisters and I stayed here and we all had plenty of space. The neighborhood was quiet and it was so relaxing. We played cards, watched movies and just sit out on the porch and talked. What a great time we had!

Great place to stay very pleasant.

We stayed here with another couple to go riding on the New River Trail. The place could not have been better. We loved it, the location is very quite and relaxing. The beds are very comfortable and the owner thought of everything.

Ver welcoming, clean and quiet. The perfect home away from home.

This was our second stay. We feel so at home there. The neighbors are friendly. We so enjoyed the front porch. We shared several breakfasts on that porch and several dinners by candlelight. We want to return soon.

Great Place

This home was exactly as pictured! The neighborhood was quiet and close to the river. Our only problem, no cell service at best spotty. The owners provide a land line which made us more comfortable in case a family member would need us. We would definitely return to this home.

The house was quiet, clean and well maintained.

If you are looking for a quiet county getaway this rental is for you. We rented this home for three nights to ride the New River Trail. The home is close to the trail and the neighborhood is amazingly peaceful. The neighbors were friendly and the deck and front porch were are favorite place after dinner. I highly recommend this home.

Enjoyed the Mountains and the River

The house was nicely decorated and furnished. It was quite roomy and has great yard with beautiful flowers--and of course a wonderful front porch. We ate most of our meals on the porch. It was great to be in the mountains, we also enjoyed canoeing on the river and hiking on the trail. Going to see a bluegrass concert at the Music venue on the Blue Ridge Parkway was quite a treat as well.

Great biking get away with old friends.

The house was in a nice location on a quiet street. Walking distance to a beautiful park along the river. Very close to the New River Trail (though temporary closures forced us to access the trail in other locations). Check the state park website for updates if you’re biking. As others have said, the upstairs bathroom was pretty tight, but the bedrooms and living areas were spacious. We enjoyed the porches and pretty backyard.

Beautiful and spacious home near New River Trail

This is a special home. Spacious, comfortable, well furnished, comprehensively equipped and very well presented, Rachel and Richard Hawks' 3 bedroom house in peaceful Fries makes a perfect home away from home from which to explore this interesting area close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Easy access to the delightful New River Rail Trail is a bonus and highly recommended. Rachel is a great communicator and offered helpful hints to ensure our stay was a memorable one.

Five years and going strong!

What started as a place to visit while attending the Hillsville Antique Festival, has become the more important of the two. Just as the name implies, this cozy cottage is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy friends and catch up with the friends we've made in Fires. Each year, as we round the bend and see Nana's, each of us has the feeling of coming home.

Great time at this wonderful, immaculate home.

We stayed at "Nana's place" for a couple of nights so that we could ride a portion of the New River State Park trail on our bikes. The house was exactly as pictured with lots of homey touches and comfortable furniture. The hosts have done a great job anticipating guests' needs and planning for them. We loved sitting out on the front porch swing in the cool of the evening listening to the night noises. We were fortunate to be able to park right in front of the house but in the event on-street parking is not available there is convenient parking behind the house via a paved lane. We stayed in the upstairs queen bedroom which was very comfortable. The house was conveniently located close to one of the entrances to the bike trail. In addition to our bike ride we learned about a Thursday acoustic music night at the historic Fries Theatre from the host's information notebook. We were glad we attended; if you are in Fries on a Thursday night and like acoustic music it is a must-attend event. Thanks to Rachel and Richard for everything, especially the Oreos! :-)

Precious home away from home

This home is situated in a quaint small town on a one way street near the New River. The street only allows parallel parking and if you don’t get back to the house soon enough, you may lose your spot ;-) The older home is very comfy and welcoming. Much better than a hotel! As mentioned in previous reviews, I will bring up only one shower in a small bathroom upstairs was tight, but the soaking claw foot tub downstairs is wonderful for relaxing!!! We were in the area to visit a few southwest Virginia wineries. I recommend visiting Galax. Cute town! Thank you to the Hawks for sharing their home.

Inviting

Great place for our annual sibling retreat. All the rooms are very inviting. We especially enjoyed the front porch and dining room for gathering and playing card games. Kitchen is well equipped with plenty of dishes, glasses, cups, flatware and other cooking needs. We appreciated the parking space behind the house. The stairs to the upstairs bedrooms has a handrail on the lower section but not from the landing to the top. It’s the only thing we older folk wished for in this house. Communication with the owners was good. Richard stopped by shortly after we arrived to welcome us and make sure we had what we needed. Would recommend Nana’s Place to others.

Spring trip

Owner is accommodating with check in etc . Although I have stayed at two properties with them , he has come banging on the doors both times which is quite disturbing.. This property is not for anyone with disabilities or handicap due to the steep steps and tiny bathrooms.. there is a major safety hazard on the back deck as there is a step down and the deck flooring is all one color and in darkness or whatever you will not notice. The parking is behind the house with no gravel driveway or anything so it was sopping wet when we were trying to load. Kitchen was well equipped and bed downstairs was comfortable .

A True Charmer!

The porch sold us on this listing out of the dozens we scoured for our too-short long weekend away. And it’s every bit as dream-like as it looks. Despite lots of ambitious plans for things to do, we ended up spending one whole day simply hanging out there, talking, dozing, snacking, reading, rocking and enjoying a beautiful day. It was incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating after the last year. And everything else about the house exceeded our hopes the same way. It’s bigger than it seems, with lots of space to spread out. Two living rooms mean larger families or couples traveling together have options for finding a quiet corner. The dining room is lovely and the kitchen has anything and everything you need. The back porch was a great lounging alternative, too, with rocking chairs and other comfy seating options, plus a large table for eating outdoors. No need to bring anything but yourselves. Possibly just a lantern for extra light on the porches, since you’ll want to linger long after dark. Also: probably the most sparkling-clean home I’ve ever stayed, period. But it didn’t feel like a museum, it was inviting and comfortable. Like others have said, the neighbors are welcoming, too. And do NOT miss the ice cream train car and fabulous riverside park just a 5-minute walk away. Could easily have spent a whole day picnicking there. Nice playground, too. Biking was super accessible, right down the street is the entry to the rails to trails — an easy trail for unused muscles in one rider but cool vistas to keep the interest of the daily cycler in our duo happy, too. Room to park your bikes indoors in laundry room but neighbors left theirs outdoors and that seemed safe. Towns nearby to explore if you like. The host has flyers handy in a basket. Big grocery store just a 7 min drive. Practically: washer & dryer were provided, with detergent. Plenty of toilet paper and other basics. Lots of fluffy towels. Comfy beds and sofas, with tons of seating. Big screen TV and microwave for popcorn. Drip coffeemaker and filters provided. Lots of outlets and robust WiFi. That was key for us because our Verizon service was next to zero inside the house, so we relied on the WiFi and land line. A nearby cell tower suggests that other carriers might have a stronger signal. The three days were too few but also felt like a true vacation, thanks to these super hosts and this has-it-all location. (The local brewery had great music and wings, too!)
