Step back through time with a stay at this charming cedar shake home, first built in 1680 - yes, 1680. Guests can expect modern convenience in the full kitchen and updated bathroom, right alongside characterful details such as sloped hardwood floors, an old-style, “good morning” staircase, low ceilings, antique accents, and artwork painted by the owner herself adorning the walls.

In the kitchen, the chef will find stainless steel appliances perfectly complement the butcher block countertops and exposed beams, and the formal, sun-filled dining room offers the perfect spot for a home-cooked meal. Spend time together in the living room streaming the latest release on TV, playing a board game, or reading a good book courtesy of the on-hand library. Use the free WiFi and desk in the sunny study to complete any remote work or grab a quick catnap on the daybed. When it’s time to venture out, the home is a quick walk to central Sandwich shopping, dining, and amenities. Town Neck Beach is a little over a mile away, with other attractions like golf, nature reserves, museums, farm stands, and the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard an easy drive.

At the end of the day, you’ll find two charming bedrooms at the top of the stairs, each featuring painted and stenciled hardwood floors and a view of Shawme Lake from the window nook. Memories have been made in this delightful home since 1680 - it’s time to add yours to the bunch.

Cape Cod Vacation

House was very charming. The stairway to get to the upstairs was difficult to maneuver. Would have been nice to have a second bathroom upstairs. Overall we enjoyed our stay there.

Great experience. The house and surrounding gardens were both immaculate and welcoming. Beautiful historical house with modern kitchen and bathroom. We were fortunate enough to meet the host who was welcoming and great to visit with.

Charming home for certain age groups

Margaret was lovely and it was clean, cool enough in the summer, plenty of hot water for showers with lovely private green space to eat outside. The rooms were spacious with lots of natural light and a good location for the village. The locking system was tricky and the deadbolt on the other back door needs to be fixed. A kitchen trash can would be helpful as would a house number you could read from the street. The back door is short so taller folks need to duck. The home would not work for a young family nor older folks as the stairs to two of the bedrooms are very tricky, we left our suitcases on the first floor.

1680's quaint with no central AC

This 1680's house is fabulously landscaped and quaintly decorated with pretty pieces of art. The online listing states that the house has air conditioning yet there is no central AC and the AC is only partial as the house has 4 window units that cannot run at the same time. There is no AC in the bathroom or the room downstairs with the daybed. Furthermore, the AC units were removed for the online pictures which is misleading. The ceilings are extremely low in parts of the house such as the doorways, kitchen, and upstairs bedrooms. I am 5'8 and hit my head four times entering the house. My husband is 6'6 and had to bend over to walk in the kitchen, through doorways, and in the upstairs bedroom. The floors in the kitchen and living room are extremely slanted. The stairs are steep and have uneven step heights which are dangerous for children, elderly, and sleep walkers. It is almost impossible to bring suitcases up the stairs. There are no privacy curtains that close all of the way in one of the upstairs bedrooms so I recommend bringing a sleeping mask to block the light. One of the upstairs bedrooms has the scent of moth balls and there are tiny spiders and webs in the nooks and crannies of the house.
