Perfect!!!

My daughter was relocating to DC and we found this "Jewel" apartment. Excellent location, clean, comfortable, quiet. My only suggestion is to have the bathroom door fixed so it can close from the hall. Very nicely decorated, you only need to bring yourself. Lois has done an amazing job. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting DC. I am looking forward to returning. Aloha and Mahalo Kathy

Great Location

This rental was in a great location, close to the Columbia Heights metro, a grocery store, shops and restaurants. It had two comfortable beds in a large sunny bedroom and a decent size kitchen with washer and dryer. I think it could easily earn a 4 star rating if they made a few changes. 1. The key for this upper floor rental was left inside a mailbox and was not protected in a lock box or electronic lock. The Home Away checkin information wasn't detailed enough to make me comfortable I could find the key so I had to made a phone call before arrival as the management didn't respond to emails asking for clarification. 2. The bathroom was down the hall so you had to leave the two rooms of the rental that were behind a locked door and walk down the hall to use it. Although it was supposed to be only for the use of the rental unit on that floor, one morning I found a man from another floor using it. When I complained, management responded quickly by having the bathroom cleaned again, talking to the people in the other rental unit and fining them. However, they didn't add a key lock on the outside of the bathroom door as I requested, to make sure no one from another floor would intrude on the space. 3. The bathroom had a claw foot tub with a shower adapter and the water flow was very weak. In addition, there was apparently a broken part so the handle for the hot water didn't work and one had to reach half way down the side of the tub to push a lever to turn on and off the hot water line. I am a healthy 60 year old with no trouble walking up several flights of stairs but I found the lack of grab bars made reaching over the side to control the hot water feel unsafe.

Don't expect amenities

To owner: I have stayed at many VRBO's and hate to write a negative review but the beds are lumpy and squeaked every time I moved. Very difficult to get comfortable. You should sleep there . They are also very high. I am 4ft 10 and had a hard time getting on the bed. A stepstool would have helped a lot. We have never not had a VRBO provide coffee and tea despite there were two coffee pots. You need to tell specifically that a trip to a coffee shop or grocery store is necessary if you want any food or drink. Sorry, you did leave one bottle of water in the refrigerator. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking. Clients should be aware the only condiments there are salt and pepper. The bathroom shower we had to use a towel as a mat because the tiles were so slippery and there is no grab bar. TV This is feedback for the owner. TV signal impossible to get. Would fix after leaving.

Two big benefits of this VRBO are location and the property manager. Apartment is close to stores, parking restaurants, post office etc. Very safe area. Property management (Lois and Milford) we’re very responsive to all our requests. Would definitely stay here on any future trip.

Make sure everything's working!

I am giving this property 3 stars instead of 2 because the manager was responded immediately to problems and was very helpful and kind. Also, if things are fixed, it would be a fine rental. Do know that the bathroom is in the hallway (private, but you do walk out into a hallway) and some of the rooms in the photos are public rooms and not part of this apartment. Also, call and be sure things are working. I arrived and couldn't get in the front door (but the manager sorted it out and I used a secret key) nor could the people arriving the next day. As it's an old building, some things simply don't work. This apartment on the top floor was like a sauna when I arrived. Because of the heat, the door swelled and I became trapped in the room. (Particularly a problem because, as I say, the bathroom is not in the room.) Fortunately, a maintenance person arrived not long after to check the heat and let me out. He gave me a screwdriver so I could get in and out and the next day he attached a door handle that worked well. The heat remained high and I kept the windows open at all times (in February). I took two showers on different days and at different times and both times the water was barely lukewarm. The outlet in the bathroom also didn't work. The beds and bedroom were very nice, clean. The kitchen is small and there is no area with a couch; just a small kitchen table and chairs.

Beautiful Apartment BUT trouble with water heater, electricity, and thermostat

Pros: This apartment is in a perfect location with everything you need within a short walking distance. Both Queen beds are extremely comfortable and the bathroom has been newly renovated. Loved having a big refrigerator and washer and dryer on hand. Cons: You cannot control the thermostat (which is set on 77 degrees). There is a stove top but no oven (which led to us microwaving a frozen pizza haha). All overhead lighting stopped working within 24 hours of arriving (no fuse box available). Thankfully the outlets worked so we could charge our phones and plug in a lamp for some light. No hot water in the shower, even though there is hot water for all the sinks. Overall: Despite the cold showers, no lights, and being a little toasty, we had everything we needed. If the power would have stayed on, the shower produced luke warm water, and the thermostat would be lowered this would be the PERFECT place for 2-4 people to stay!

Good location. Close to metro and grocery store.

The apartment is located on the third floor. It was nice for a two-four person stay. They only had one spoon in the kitchen and I don't think there where any other utensils i.e. fork and knives. No cable TV. The location in nice and beds were comfy.

Good location, a bit cramped

This apartment is in a really good location. Convenient to metro, grocery, restaurants and easy access to downtown. The building is quite old and very squeaky. Signs are plastered everywhere to keep the noise down, however the slightest footstep is heard throughout the entire building. If you are looking for a place to just crash at night after spending all day walking in downtown, this is perfect. However, I would say probably not ideal for children due to the noise issue. Upstairs unit said suitable for 4 people. However, it is too small. We were so cramped it was difficult to move around or relax. Upstairs unit would be best for 2 people max. All in all, we had a good stay.

hot shower faucet does not work; had to use red shut off/on valve under claw tub turn on hot water

First off, the remainder of this unit worked well for us, we particularly liked the firm, nice beds & bedding, and appreciated the location of apartment in relation to Columbia Hts Metro stop, and grocery shopping options nearby. we also liked '& Pizza' located between Metro stop and apartment. That darn shower was a daily challenge though. It needs a new faucet at minimum. The current hot faucet, as i wrote in headline, works when red shut off valve is flipped under the claw foot tub. The cold side of the faucet does work. With the current faucet, i found I did not need to turn on cold water faucet to get a barely warm shower. Also the shower head gives about 1/2 of normal water flow.

Comfort in Columbia Heights

Fabulous location and user friendly . Easy to get from the airport and anywhere using the metro. Only downside was the bathroom on the third floor is in e hall. I would still recommend for a couple who likes to walk and not afraid of stairs.

It was sufficient, but not great.

The best thing about this rental is the location and the responsiveness of the property manager. The unit is within walking distance of many restaurants, stores, etc. We loved being so close to what Columbia Heights has to offer. However, there was a problem with shower (no hot water for two days, and then scalding water on the third day). This needs to be fixed. Also, the unit could do with a bit of upkeep work (e.g., fresh paint, clean up the TV cords which hang from the wall). With those items fixed (and the shower problem) this unit would be a 4 star rating.

comfortable and clean!

This house is divided by floors for each group, but it was still really private and noise wasn't a problem. The beds are huge and comfortable and the amenities are great. Columbia Heights is a gentrifying neighborhood so a lot of people are getting pushed out my higher wage earners, so that could be something you would like to consider before renting. It's close to the Metro, about an 8 minute walk. It connects to the green and the yellow so if you are planning on doing tourist things on the National Mall, you will have to transfer to the blue, yellow, and orange lines, but that isn't too much of a hassle it's just extra waiting time for the transfer train. We ended up staying on the 3rd floor and there wasn't an elevator, which was only a problem for us to bring our heavy suitcases. Be aware if you need ADA accommodations.

Prime location and we would stay again

First off, the location of the rental was great! I cannot say that enough! Shopping, grocery and food are all within walking distance. And the location felt safe, which is a plus. It is an urban neighborhood, which we really liked. Lots of people walking around, walking their dogs, so we didn't stick out like sore thumbs. We walked the first couple of days we were there, to U Street, to Ted's Bulletin on 14th, DC is really great for that and at this location we were pretty close to everything. The beds were extremely comfortable! Nice and plush. Plus the motion sensor on the stairs was really nice to have, since we often came in at night and when the hallway was dark; no problems there. As for the bathroom, it was small, as was mentioned. The water pressure was a little low, particularly in the bathroom sink, and there is a nice vanity mirror with light on the wall, but the light did not work. Also, the parking pass fee we were charged was $20 instead of $15. Not a big deal, but if the price has changed, it should be updated. We noticed that the freezer did not close all the way, and there are a few slats of hardwood that could be repaired. Just a few negatives, but nothing major. Keep in mind this is not a luxury hotel suite, it is an old building with great character. That being said, we would stay here again on another visit to DC, loved the convenience of having everything right there and the neighborhood charm.

Wonderful

We found the apartment to be in the perfect location. It was really nice and very clean and well kept. The white linens and towels where beautiful and the bed was very comfortable. Parking was no problem and Mr. Chiazo was very helpful in answering our questions. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and dinner so we were able to stay within our budget by only eating out at lunch. The Metro and the grocery store were both only one block away. We felt safe waking in the neighborhood after dark. We were sad to have to leave our little vacation get away. I highly recommend this rental to anyone who is wanting to visit DC

Perfect for us!!

This was my first experience booking through VRBO and I couldn’t have asked for a better one! I’m a single mom and this trip was just me and my 15yr old son. The neighborhood and apartment building are both lovely and I always felt safe. Metro station is super close as is Target, Giant Supermarket and several dining establishments which came in very handy. We had breakfast every day in the apartment but other than that we didn’t do any cooking, I did look through the cabinets though and it looks like there are plenty of pots and pans for that. Having the washer & dryer made packing light easy. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable and I’m very picky when it comes to that. We loved this apartment and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to a friend. Hint: We bought a Groupon for Z-burger which is right around the corner and ate there twice, yummy food!!

Quiet, comfortable yet close to transport and shopping.

The apartment was ideally situated and we were very comfortable there. We had one problem when the power went out but Mr. Chiazo was very helpful and charming and had it fixed in no time. As a woman, I appreciated the fine white bed and bath linens, but I think that my husband would probably be more interested in mentioning the coffee maker, microwave and toaster! We found the shower to be plenty strong enough and there was always a good supply of hot water. Although close to shopping and the metro, the apartment was very quiet and we slept soundly on the comfortable beds. If we return to Washington we will certainly return here. If there were one area that we found a little short, it would be the lack of a couple of nice bowls and side plates for morning cereal or yoghurt and toast. However, seeing the table beautifully set for dinner when we first arrived gave us a warm welcome.

DC visit

The beds were very comfortable, soft linen. Perfect location, parked the car and used the metro a few blocks away. Parking is an issue, but were able to obtain a parking permit from Lois for $15.00, this is the cheapest we found. Kitchen was well stocked, and having the washer and dryer was perfect timing, because we had been traveling for a week and needed to wash clothes. Grocery store around the corner, also coffee places, as well as target etc if needed. Bathroom in hall, but convenient, showering in the tub felt a little unsteady because the bottom was curved, but the water was hot and still enjoyed the shower. My sister and I are over 55, had no problem with the stairs, but it is on the third floor, no elevator. Lois called within a few minutes when we called about the parking permit, very attentive and helpful. Property was clean and well stocked, would stay again.

Perfect Location!

The location is perfect, Metro only a few blocks away and easy to get to downtown area. Neighborhood was safe for walking day and night. The neighborhood is a beautiful historic area. Target, Starbucks and grocery store within walking distance (in case you don’t know, plastic bags to carry your stuff back cost 5? a bag!) Overall the area was perfect. The apartment was clean, kitchen perfect for light cooking and washer/dryer came in handy. The stairs did not bother us, only when arriving and leaving to carry luggage up and down. Lights were always on in the entryway for us. Only downside was the water pressure in the shower. The bathroom is outside living area, but you do not share it with anyone and did have your privacy. The Owner and Maintenance Mr. Chiazo were right there for any needs. Loved the 102 year old building, thanks!
