About this property

Satinwood - Inspiring Views, Pool, Privacy at this open and airy Eco-Villa

Located high above Coral Bay looking out on the East end of beautiful St. John and the British Virgin Islands.

Tropical trade winds provide constant cooling; awaken to spectacular sunrises and breathtaking views. Relax and watch the sailboats from the covered deck. Do not be misled, our breezy hilltop location truly does not need air conditioning. The great room features an entertainment wall with TV (a Roku with guest mode is provided; Fire Stick not provided), DVD player, stereo and more.

With comfortable sleeping arrangements for up to 8 guests, 3 full bathrooms, complete kitchen with microwaves, dishwashers, and much more, Satinwood is sure to exceed your expectations.

Satinwood is solar powered; free from ties to the island's utilities. But you won't even notice that fact. The storage battery bank and backup generator provide reliable and earth-friendly energy for all your needs.

The unique design of Satinwood's energy and water system provides year-round comfort.

Even during times of periodic drought, the massive water collection area, huge cisterns, and use of Clivus Multrum composting toilet systems assure plenty of fresh, clean water for drinking, washing, and of course, relaxing in the cool swimming pool.

Each of two main floor bedrooms have one king size bed, complete bathroom, plus ladder accessible loft with two twin beds (suitable for ages 6 and up).

Larger parties will also be able to use the studio apartment downstairs as a third bedroom. That apartment has a king bed and full bath.

Outside on the sunny pool deck, lounge chairs, umbrella table, and gas barbecue grill make for the perfect vacation day or evening.

Satinwood is a regular visit for many of our guests. It is so beautiful, visitors come back year after year.

Comfortable accommodations for up to 8 guests
- Landscaping, pool & sun deck, covered gallery and bedroom decks
- Private and secluded but minutes from beaches, shopping and dining
- Alternative energy systems; solar battery and an automatic backup generator.
- Broadband Wifi internet.
- Television (We now provide a Roku with guest mode for ease and security. You may bring a Fire Stick or other media device), stereo and other comforts

Beautiful little St. John has so much to offer. The east end of the island is quiet and removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Some excellent restaurants and shopping are now available in Coral Bay and nearby. And, if a little more action is what you are looking for, Cruz Bay is still just a short drive away. For peace, beauty and the serenity of the islands, come to Coral Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Please note that the rate calculation must have the total number of guests.

A beautiful, relaxing getaway

What a week! This house is beyond beautiful-the view, the landscaping/all the crazy plants around it, the wildlife, the pool! The toilets, showers, lights, power were NO issue at all. The house would get warm during the day, but we escaped to the pool or beaches! The location was private but not too far from things. We loved it and would definitely come back one day!

Eco stay in a beautiful setting

The property was just as advertised. We are not luxury demanding people so the amenities were perfect for us. No A/C? No problem. Composting toilets? Wonderful! But the view???? Absolutely beautiful! The deck off the common room was the best! Energy or Green people will love this place!

St John trip with Grandkids

Property was as just as stated. Fit well for our family of 4 adults and 3 children. Easy to find, easy access to beaches, easy access to East end. Kitchen was very well equiped, barbeque worked well. A few screens need to be repaired for reinstall, we did a couple, the smoke alarms needed attention and a few lights did not work properly. Regardless we all had a great time and thank you for sharing your lovely home and view!

Excellent views and comfortable home. Just minor suggestions need to leave ice for new guests, a new toaster and bedroom shades , and maybe some non breakable dinnerware. Very minor ideas to make it perfect!

superb spot

We have stayed at a great many villas in St John, and were thrilled with Satinwood. One would be hard pressed to get a more spectacular view. Living off the grid with solar power and composting toilets came with no downside and made us feel more aware of our impact as tourists. We have nothing but enthusiasm and praise for this rental, and the owner was extremely responsive and helpful. That we were able to stay comfortably so soon after two devastating hurricanes is a testament to how well built and lovingly cared for this home is.

Peaceful with incredible view

We loved our stay in this house. We chose the Coral Bay end of the island to avoid the noise, and it was perfect. We slept to the noise of frogs, with gentle breezes blowing through the louvre windows. Our concern for the impact of travel on the environment meant this house with its solar power, composting toilets and gentle footprint was ideal. Our family enjoyed the great room and there is plenty of privacy with the bedrooms being at different ends of the building. We prepared many of our meals, and the kitchen is well equipped to do this. We experienced some excessive enthusiasm from the Noseeum's/mosquitoes and the management company responded immediately. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your home.

BOOK THIS PROPERTY NOW!!!

Is it possible to have a bad experience on St. John??? Well, the answer is a very loud NO. But this is my particular perspective. I'd give 5 STARS to a hammock on the beach with a million mosquito bites on my body in this paradise which is the USVI's. In this case though, the house was just as expected and described. The ONLY critique I'd have for this property would be the no A/C issue, which leads to a degree of dampness (which you will feel in the linens, your clothing, etc.), however having a "green" house with backup power more than made up for it. I've been stuck on island many times without power, for extended periods of time. Being self sufficient, off the grid, was VERY NICE. The property management that runs Satinwood is TOP NOTCH and amazingly responsive and prompt with ANY requests or issues. Probably the MOST amazing and intriguing item this house offers is the flushless/green toilets. I am in "AWE" over this. I have spent plenty of time on boats, buses, planes, and very familiar with holding tanks and "smells". First bathroom/s I have ever experienced where you can have a gastrointestinal catastrophic explosion and the next person entering bathroom would NEVER have a clue. TOTALLY SMELL PROOF TOILETS. I am still in shock. I want one for home!!!!!! Cannot go wrong with this property.

Lovely view, bountiful towels and an attentive management team

Stepping into the house felt like we stepped back in time. Switches were labeled by the label makers from the ‘80s. The smoke detector was chirping for a new battery, the stove didn’t work and the only clock in the house didn’t work. The management company very kindly took care of these things. Who needs a clock anyway? The listing indicated cable TV but there was no service, only dvds that were 20 years old. Not that we came here to watch TV, but there were rainy mornings and evenings where service would have been nice. A blu-ray dvd player with a wireless LAN was delivered a week too late. Blinds in one bedroom couldn’t roll because strings were broken/incorrectly repaired. Some venetian blinds were broken. A hole in a bedroom screen was plugged with a tissue, and another screen was falling out. Composting toilets were a non-issue, however, there’s a slight odor. It would be classier having a fitted cloth toilet seat cover rather than adjusting the bath towel each time. A towel rack’s coming out of the wall, there are missing and loose tiles in one of the showers. One shower head has little water coming out of it, so the hand held is the only option. The shower walls have dirt/cobwebs, rusted nail heads and missing ceiling tiles. Many of the walls have water stains (Irma & Maria). The grill’s auto ignite does not work, which one needs to figure out and then learn how to start since the owner’s informational binder does not address. There were three more times that the stove did not work preventing us from using it and requiring calls to management company. The kitchen has the essentials of very average quality. It’s stated that the owner “recently completed an extensive electric system upgrade with all new, state-of-the-art equipment…”. This needs to be clarified as simultaneous use of a toaster, coffee pot and microwave popped the breaker. Many tiles around the pool and laundry area are loose and uneven, and some missing. The washing machine worked once and wouldn’t the second time, another call to the management company. We didn’t even try the gas dryer. The retaining wall at the top of the driveway has stones falling out on to the driveway. Given the angle of the driveway and lack of visibility turning into it makes this simply unsafe and unwelcoming. If a house has feelings, this house is sad and feels neglected. In it’s heyday I’m sure Satinwood was elegant, but it is now old and tired, and not given the love/maintenance it needs.

Amazing villa with amazing views

This was our 4th trip to St. John and we found Satinwood to be by far the best property and location we have stayed. The sunrises are beautiful as are the views of Coral Bay, Norman Island, Peter Island and other smaller islands. The house is very comfortable and very well stocked for cooking at the house, and was perfect for our party of 2 older couples. Wonderful porches/balconies with a great pool area as well. The multrum toilets were not a problem for us. The breezes kept the house at a comfortable temperature so we did not need or miss air conditioning. Had it not been for the temporary road work going on the whole week, we would have had the perfect vacation. We would definitely go back again, and highly recommend for couples, as well as families with kids who don’t mind climbing ladders to get to the upper bedrooms.

Great place to stay

Excellent location and provided us with wonderful accommodation on a wonderful vacation. The mosquitos and bugs were a bit to deal with and one of the beds (sleep number mattress) went flat every night. No 'no flush - natural toilets' caught a couple of our guest off guard. So maybe that could be better explained in the property description - or perhaps we just missed it while looking at the beautiful pictures. Missing that great sunrise view already...

Stunning views

The photos don't do it justice. This property is perched atop a ridge high above Coral Bay. We had a constant sea breeze so we were never too hot. The views are spectacular day and night. We had two little ones with us who enjoyed the pool. Long drive up the ridge and tricky driveway, but we managed just fine in our four door jeep. Composting toilets are no problem at all; keep the lid closed and you won't smell a thing (even with the lid open not bad). We were missing some outdoor seat cushions, so we had to bring indoor furniture out to enjoy the serene balcony. The management company was kind and responsive. Only downside to our trip was that many restaurants were closed so the ones we went to typically had very long waits and slow service. So given how lovely things are at Satinwood, I would recommend picking up groceries and cooking at the villa! If I close my eyes I can still feel the rejuvenating effects of Satinwood:)

Summer Vacation

We loved our stay at Satinwood! Our teenage kids asked for something more “adventurous” than the Westin where we typically stay. The views from the house are spectacular, we had plenty of space - each kid (ages 8, 13) took a bunk and the older (16) slept in what was basically a second master. We never had any issues with the power, the toilets were also a non-issue and we never noticed the lack of A/C as there is a breeze through the house at all times. (We visited in June) It was great for all of us to experience living off the grid. Staying on the Coral Bay side of the island was also a huge plus - quiet beautiful beaches with great snorkeling and hiking all around. I would highly recommend trying to get a Jeep as the road up the mountain to the house is steep. If you are going to Saint John to experience the rugged raw beauty of the island, this is a great house!

Upper Carolina Eco Villa

Over all came as advertised. We were relocated for the first 3 nights due to a generator failure. We were moved (after asking to stay and not relocate) to the villa we originally booked on the fourth night stating the generator was fixed. Original thoughts were the place was as advertised, and the view was great. The generator was not working properly though as we lost power 4 out of the 5 nights around 4 am. The management team responded quickly to the inquiry and sent someone to look at it. He told us he believed the pool filter was running all night, draining the energy. He stated he fixed it, although we continued to lose power every morning. I did not follow up about it, since it didn't seem to make a difference. Overall it was exactly as advertised, the staff was very helpful when contacted. I truly believe they did the most they could with what they had. There were a few negatives that were I'm sure beyond the control of the management team. With no air conditioning it was not too hot with fans running, but without power and fans, It did get very warm early in the morning. The humidity was so intense that the bed sheets always felt wet, unable to be dried (soaking up air moisture). About midway through the booking, I found a spider big enough to be paying rent in my room. I identified it as a Calisoga, false tarantula. The Biggest spider I have ever seen in my life, and had no clue how it got in my room. My friend also found a giant cockroach in his room. Im guessing they sprayed for pests before our arrival, forcing this and the spider out of hiding. I have a fear of spiders, so this one made me lose some sleep. Having said the above, I understand these species are common on the island and I'm sure are found in most older villas. I would recommend this place for people who don't mind it truly being an "Eco villa", as the view was incredible, the pool was nice, and it was very spacious. If you have alot of insect or lizard phobias, and have a need for constant reliable power at night, I would recommend another property. Either way would recommend renting under the management team that provided the booking. Thank you Jim and Lisa for the time spent helping.

Very Friendly & Accommodating- The Perfect Island Getaway

Breathtaking views, the owner was very gracious during a historically difficult time. We arrived just before the COVID 19 pandemic. The owner gave us extra time at a discounted rate so we could make the best travel arrangements for our family. The management company was spot on in every aspect. We loved the Eco home experience. It has made us more aware of our energy use at home. We were able to see the island like very few get to see. Cant wait to get back to love city; the owner, locals and management company made us feel like family. See ya soon.

House on the hill with a spectacular view

Our family, to include myself, my husband our two children and even my parents visited for a week at the end of February 2020. Cute and comfortable place, we really enjoyed it! The view is out of this world! Whether we were having dinner at the dinner table, sitting out on the spacious balcony or lounging by the pool, you have a perfect view over Coral Bay, amazing! Very private, no neighbors that you can see from the house. The property managers did a bang up job showing us to the house from the ferry, they even offer a provisioning service (among many others) that we took advantage of. They had the fridge stocked with essentials to get us started when we arrived. Once we got to the house, she showed us around and helped us get acclimated which was nice. Before we left on our trip, we had so many questions, I mean LOTs of questions, the home owner was so great with providing detail, and responding quickly, very nice exchanges that were immensely helpful and appreciated. The house could use some minor updates and a little TLC (tender loving care) here and there but overall, a warm, inviting, private get away home with a beautiful view! We loved the stay and we loved the island! We were first timers! Also, happy that we chose Saint John over Saint Thomas! P.S. The toilets were absolutely fine! :-)

Nice stay. Needs a little maintenance.

We stayed here for a little over a week in February 2020. We liked that it had more eco features and even the composting toilets were ok. The house is really BIG! There were only 3 of us staying at it. My wife, son and I. The layouts of the lofts over the lower bedrooms is a bit different. The house needs some maintenance and updating. Painting, tile work, etc.. For the money it was good value as we typically don't spend a ton of time at the villa. We made it work and had a great vacation.

A little piece of heaven

Love that this is an eco house. Extremely cool to experience life “off the grid”. Views are breath-taking. I woke up every morning for the sunset.... no words. Location is great. So private, but still just a short drive any where you want to go. Family time by the pool was a favorite. We will definitely be back!

Well stocked villa with incredible views

My husband and I, along with our two friends, spent 6 nights at the Satinwood. Our experience was very enjoyable, beginning with the great communication of the owner prior to booking. Jim answered all our questions (we had many) and was very patient. When we stepped off the ferry, Nidia from Cimmaron St. John led us to our Jeep at Cool Breeze, then to our villa overlooking Coral Bay. She explained all the features in great detail, then we settled in. The Satinwood is certainly designed for its environment; the vaulted ceiling keeps the main area cool, the windows catch the hilltop breezes and we didn't have any issue with the lack of A/C - we wouldn't have used it if it were there. We didn't have our kiddos with us (the whole point of the trip being a relaxing getaway), so I can't comment on the comfort of the twin beds in each loft, but the lofts themselves were very cute. The king beds in each bedroom were comfortable, though we had did get cold with only the sheets on the beds - we took the sheets from the twin beds to add some more layers and it was fine. The toilets were somewhat strange at first, but then weren't an issue. The showers could use some updating as they were missing a few tiles, and the shower heads could be replaced, but the towels were very nice, new and comfy. We used the provided beach towels, coolers and beach chairs every day - it was so nice to have these provided at the villa! The kitchen was well stocked with all the necessities, so that was nice. There was a bit of a sugar ant problem, so we had to make sure to keep all food well sealed and off the counters. The balcony was so wonderful for relaxing and taking in the amazing views! We didn't use the pool as much as I thought we would, since we typically snorkeled in the mornings and didn't make it back to the villa until after the sun had gone behind the hills. However, it was very nice for a quick dip to rinse off the salt water. All in all, we had a wonderful time. If you're looking for luxurious furnishings, this villa is likely not for you, but it does have everything you need to enjoy St. John. We certainly did!

Beautiful views, wonderful accommodations.

The villa sits at the top of the hill overlooking Coral Bay and the VBI. Each bedroom has its own porch, and there is another large one off the living area. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, glasses, utensils, pots and pans- everything you might need. The beds are very comfortable, as are the chairs and couches in the living room. The only slight negative is the toilets. The toilet sits on a large kind of tube where the waste goes down to be composted. It was somewhat offputting for me, but not for the rest of our group. All in all our stay was fantastic.

Awesome place to stay

This house is great and was perfect for the 7 of us that vacationed here! We are looking to come back with 5 in July this year and can't wait to hopefully stay here again! The view from the house is worth every penny! I would recommend this place to anyone! Everything was exactly as described when we arrived and was located on a nice private road away from it all but a quick jump in the car from cool breeze we rented and we were to town in no time.

He worst vacation house ever !!!

The description of this house is TOTALLY misleading !!! My husband and I arrived 2/29/16 an couldn't wait to leave. After a sleepless night we were blessed to find a different place to stay. We have been coming to STJ since 1985 and have never experienced a disaster as Satinwood. The house was dirty, smelly, dangerous, very old and definarely not worth the money. The appliances that did not work are... The gas grill, washer, dryer, safe and the pool was below the filtering level, causing mosquitoes. The furniture was old, smelly and dirty. The towels, you DO NOT want to use.. They are dirty and very stained with what knows. The toilets are smelly. They are a compost toilet, aka job Jonny. Everything about this house is a misrepresentation !!!! DO NOT RENT THIS HOUSE !!!!

A very good place at a very good price!

Satinwood is a very nice, comfortable place with a fantastic view! There is plenty of space, the kitchen is very well-equipped, beds are comfortable, the pool is a joy, and the breezes are great. It may not be as polished as more expensive places, but it was a very good deal for the money. We appreciated the fact that the house had some green characteristics. The owner and property managers were most helpful and responsive. The few improvements I would suggest would be to fix the screens (there were some holes and loose screens, though maybe trying to avoid mosquitos is impossible), and make the guests aware of how to compost the toilets. There was some issue with odor from one of the composting toilets (maybe a fan in the composting system was not working?), and once we started putting some leaves in more regularly it was resolved. I want to stress that these were minor issues, and we all very much enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend Satinwood.

Why they chose this property

Satinwood is our family vacation home, not an investment property. We have over 40 years on St. John and picked this location deliberately when there were lots of options. We chose to live off the grid and preserve the natural beauty of the area as much as possible. Satinwood remains our favorite spot to get away from it all. We hope you enjoy the magnificent views, the tranquility and privacy as much as we do.
