About this property

Cottage on the Water with Beautiful View

This cottage is on a small bluff overlooking the water and surrounding marshes. It is located on a secluded peninsula just 5 miles from Bath, Me.

There is a hiking trail along water's edge and also kayaks and canoes to rent to explore the waterways.

The cottage has wood beamed ceilings and pine floors. There is a good size screened porch from which you can enjoy sunset views over the water.

There is a queen size bed in one bedroom and two twin size beds in the other. The couch in the living room converts to a bed for additional sleeping accommodations.

For those who desire to stay 'plugged in' we offer basic channels and Wifi.

The kitchen is complete with full size refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster and coffee pot not to mention all the pots, pans, dishes and utensils you will need. If you enjoy to BBQ there is a charcoal grill just outside the front door. For lobster lovers we have a large pot available for you to cook them fresh in your cottage.

The Midcoast area of Maine is known for its miles of white sandy beaches and lobster wharfs where you can enjoy their famous lobster dinners on the dock as you watch the lobstermen bringing in their catch for the day. What makes the midcoast so appealing is the fact that you get to enjoy all this without the crowds. You will love the slower pace of life and the pristine beauty of this untouched area.

Great cabin, wonderful hosts

We stayed for five weeks with two Labrador dogs. The cabin was great - simple with frills. The host family were wonderful.

Classic Maine

Great little cabin. Easy to get to, while being quiet, private, fun and without any of the vacation destination crowding common in some Maine coastal towns. Be sure to spend a few evenings on the screened porch and make your way over to Five Islands for a meal or two.

Secluded Maine getaway

Great escape from the city and to connect with nature. Enjoyed being stuck at home even in the rain to sit on the screened in porch and appreciate the surroundings. Katie, the host was attentive to our needs.

Absolute gem! New favorite place!

I've been traveling up and down Maine peninsulas for the last 5 years. This is my new favorite spot for a lot of reasons. The location is beautiful and serene. The porch overlooking the tidal river is amazing. The proximity to Bath meant quick and easy trips for shopping, museums, and the Patten Free Library. The location was also conveniently close to Reid Sate Park (love it) and the season pass was an appreciated token. I loved this cabin. It had everything you need to make for a comfortable and cozy stay. Upon arrival the property was sparkling clean. The host and homeowners are lovely and attentive. The communication was prompt and reliable--they are so nice! I felt safe as a solo female traveler and would highly recommend this property. This stay gave me a much needed mom break. I hope they'll have us back. Thanks again!

Another wonderful week at Back River Bend

This was our third time staying at Back River Bend and we had another wonderful time! Communications with Katie is always timely, helpful and friendly. The cottage is just right for our family (children 6 &10). We enjoy the location and spend the week going to Reid State Park, Popham Beach, Bath, Boothbay. We also enjoy just relaxing on the screen porch and watching the tidal river. Thank you!

Beautiful Property

Everything about this property was above and beyond what we expected. The cabin was rustic with all the basic necessities. The screened in porch was perfect for watching the sunset over the river. Also, if you are looking to rent with a larger group, there are other rentals on the property. The managers and other family who live there were all so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back!

Loved the cabin by the river

The cabin was exactly what we expected and great. We especially loved the screened in porch and being able to put our kayaks in close to the house. I was surprised by the lack of mosquitoes. My daughter explained that it was likely because of the salt marsh. They don’t like salt water. Hosts were great and it was a terrific location for exploring the Mid Coast region. Reid State Park is about 15 minutes away and we so appreciated the park pass. Gorgeous beach.

Great place to relax, peaceful in all weather conditions.

Beautiful view of the mash and river. Bring your favorite mosquito and bug clothing for outdoor enjoyment. The porch is screened and a great place to read or sit.

A wonderful week

The cottage is small and rustic and everything we needed for a week away. The views of the water from the back porch were a highlight and we appreciated being able to travel with our dog. It was a short 10 minute or so drive to Bath but also felt remote with a short hiking trail on the property and ability to get my paddle board in the water without having to drive to a put in site. Please note, you need to bring drinking water but this isn't much of an inconvenience.

Great location and views.

We spent hours each day sitting in the back porch watching the salt marsh change with the tides and walking the short trail that starts next to the house. Lots to see and do within a few miles of the house.

Exact;y what we were looking for and as advertized

We had a wonderful week in Maine, and the cottage was perfect -- rustic, but comfortable with a great view and easy access to kayaking from the property. We slept well with a cool breeze every night, after very active days. The inclusion of a pass to Reid State Park and Popham Beach was a real bonus and a money-saver because we went to each a few times. I am rating our stay as 4 stars rather than 5 primarily because the mosquitoes in the area were awful during our stay; worse in the woods and by a river than if we were closer to open ocean. Also, the nature of staying in a cabin is hard to describe as 5 star.

Rustic Cabin

Rustic cabin in a quiet, peaceful setting. Screened in porch offered a great spot for reading and relaxing. One evening we saw a deer running along the marsh. Internet connection was very reliable. For anyone with any physical limitations this is not the spot for them. Both bedrooms are upstairs with the bathroom downstairs. Bedrooms get very hot during the day but do cool down at night with the help of a fan. Queen size bed is not very comfortable but twin beds are ok.

A lovely location

We have been staying at Back River Bend for many years and just love it there! The cabin is clean, all dishes, lobster pots, frying pans, silverware, charcoal grill-outside (you name it, it is already there). We LOVE RUTH and SAM! The rented boat slip allows us to dock our boat there and we do not have to worry about someone cutting it loose and we don't have to pull the boat out when it is low tide as there is enough water there whether it is high tide or low tide!

Perfect and updated

We have stayed in Sagadahoc many times and always love it. This year the furniture is updated and really made a difference. We enjoyed an amazing week. We rented kayaks onsite and went out on the Back River almost daily, a great way to see the area. Back River Bend is perfectly situated for beaches, hiking, biking, and great eating adventures. Booked for 2017...❤️

Very nice cottage with great views of the river

Awesome!!

Great cottage, excellent location, super owners. There is so much to see and do in this area, you could truly spend your entire sightseeing vacation in this location. The cottage had plenty of room for our family, and very clean. The owners were very helpful and gave excellent information for sightseeing tips.

Peace and beauty

We loved the property. The cabin was beautiful, and the screened porch was heaven morning coffee, afternoon relaxation, or evening drinks. If there weren't so many things to do within short driving distance, We could have spent the whole time on that porch. We enjoyed the privacy, the views, and the access to the water with our rented canoes. Can't wait to go back!

About the host

Hosted by Katie Francis

Host profile image
We, Sam and Ruth Francis, are the owners and hosts of eight rental properties in Georgetown, Maine. We have four wonderful grown sons and are proud grandparents. We worked for years to finish our timber frame dream home at the tip of the peninsula. We have past the property management part of the cottages to our son, Chris and his wife, Katie.

Why they chose this property

We purchased this unique fifty acre property with its half mile long peninsula over thirty years ago. Since then we have lived here and operated a traditional wooden boat shop. Over the years we have built six charming cottages, as well as, converted a Sailor's Loft to a rental with breathtaking, panoramic views. We also, offer the home that we first built and lived in to renters, with it's ideal location at the tip of the peninsula with deep water frontage and a private dock. We have added other touches to our property with a garden house, ten slip boat dock, a hiking trail and clearings for fishing and picnics.

What makes this property unique

The cottages are situated to allow privacy and also to maintain the quality of the open, natural spaces. Each cottage overlooks the marsh and the Back River which flows off the mighty Kennebec River and nature conservancy land beyond.
