Up North Luxury w/Unmatched Charm! 2 miles to MTU!

The Portage Centre is spacious, perfect for entertaining & tastefully remodeled to pay tribute to the area’s rich ice hockey tradition.i

The Portage Centre is the foremost destination for adventure seekers, & large families as it sits at the gateway to the Keweenaw, & is located just steps from the famed Jack Stevens snowmobile trail and Portage Canal.

The building has a long history as The General Glass Company, but the owners recently purchased the building to create the Portage Centre. The Portage Centre is a fully remodeled 3 bed/3 bath luxury home. The guest area consists of the entire 1750 sf main floor while the basement was retained by the owner for storage, caretaker apartment and is inaccessible to guests.

While staying at The Portage Centre, guests do not share spaces or amenities with anyone else. The property is located along Hancock Street (US41) and is in the middle of everything. If you are a light sleeper there is a chance the traffic noise could wake you in the front bedroom. The Master bedroom is located in the rear of the building and traffic will not affect most sleepers. That said, we are in the middle of everything and you can walk to most everything in downtown Houghton and Hancock!

A portion of all bookings will be donated to support local youth hockey.

We enjoyed this property. All written communication was replied to immediately . The keypad was froze with the front door key when we arrived and the property manager came immediately and was very friendly.

Convenient and Clean

The property was clean, as the photos depict. It's in the heart of downtown, so very close to the university, dining, etc. However, convenience comes at the expense of heavy truck and snowmobile noise.

As expected

Great property, as expected from the description, pictures, and previous renters reviews. There is a lot of road noise and snowmobile action constantly but we knew what we were getting into with that. I don’t think you could stay any where in town and get away from that. We were visiting MTU’s campus, property is very close. Property owners were excellent with communication and promptly responded to messages. Enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

Post Christmas Trip

My family went up to the Keweenaw for a short visit between Christmas and New Years. The weather didn't cooperate but the place was fantastic. It's big, clean and great location. We will definitely stay again when we go north.

Snowy Thanksgiving

Well stocked, roomy, wonderfully decorated, good parking, nice fans and sound machines. We really enjoyed time as a family, places to play card games together ant to watch the game together, to cook together and to be able to take some time apart.

Great location, very comfortable.

We enjoyed this location a lot. Convenient to everything. Beds are probably the most comfortable VRBO ones we’ve stayed in. Only draw back is noise level (it’s on a busy street) but owner provided white noise machines. If you need total quiet, not for you but we all slept very well. Clean, well appointed and everything worked. We liked the local restaurants too (Forge brisket place was excellent, as was La Cantina which is in walking distance). Showers were quite nice (tiled and large). Pat’s grocery was excellent too. We did nerdy sightseeing (alike the Dredge) and some nice hiking (lots of waterfalls). Great weekend.

Terrific Property, Great Location.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners did a stellar job converting the business building into a home - good taste and well stocked. We liked the location too. Street noise is there, but did not impede on our stay. Check-in and check-out super easy. Thanks and we will choose this place again when we are back.

Beautiful, fun, amazing location!!

Staying at this property was amazing! The location was incredibly convenient to access the downtown Hancock/Houghton area. The house itself is incredibly spacious, clean and an awesome hangout space! Check-in was incredibly fast and easy. The manager of the property responds in 5-10 minutes. I would definitely recommend staying here to others.

Stunning property by lake

I can not recommend this property enough! It was so beautiful inside and every room was so spacious and decorated so nicely. The property was very clean and the bedding had crisp white sheets. It was a block away from a wonderful park that overlooked the portage. Also had fun trails to walk and so close to town and restaurants. We felt so at home and can’t not wait to stay again!

So much space!!!

We loved this property! It's much bigger than it appears in the photos. The home is well stocked with quality kitchen wares, gorgeous furniture, and comfy beds & pillows. Our stay consisted of utilizing the house as a home base while we visited family, friends, and hit hit the beaches so the location was perfect!!!

Amazing Stay in Hancock

The property and host were amazing! Stayed here for an event in Houghon with my parents and a couple friends. The walk across the bridge was super easy - did it several times. Also had our dog with us. Everything was super clean and inviting. The outside looks kind of like a business but it made for easy parking! Beds were comfortable and overall we just had great experience. Hope to be back soon!

Excellent home in Hancock

This place was wonderful, highly recommended. I ended up staying just over a week and needed to extend for a few days. Luckily it was available and the owner was really responsive and helpful. It was truly a home away from home. Super comfortable, very clean, had everything we needed and we cooked every meal. We really loved this place. Would definitely come back here if we come to the area again!

Fantastic stay

This was our 2nd time staying here. Clean, roomy. Love the 3 bedrooms and 3 full baths. Walking distance to many great places in Hancock for dinner, drinks, breakfast and bakery items as well as shops. This was convenient for moving our son out of MTU. Also a very comfortable place for my husband and I to work remotely. We brought our dog and walked just down the road to Porvoo Park most mornings. Trails nearby that span for miles. Also, a dog park just a couple of miles away. Just a perfect stay!

Beautifully Renovated!

My colleagues were very impressed with the cleanliness and renovations of this property. Our company was staying at this rental for the 2024 MTU Spring Career fair, and it was a wonderful choice! There was a lot of attention to detail in how it was designed and decorated, everything is new and fresh! The location is perfect when it comes to accessing all you need in town, which was definitely utilized! The parking was great for what was needed, which was a Ram 2500 diesel truck. There aren't many improvements to suggest, however, one would be the baseboard heat was noisy, especially in the middle of the night. They only other downside was the one room is right next to a busy road (8-10 feet), which was loud on it's own. If a sound machine was used that could have help drown out the traffic sound. Overall, it was a great place to stay and we would be happy to come back and stay there again! We will recommend it to others!

The Portage Centre is centrally located and most everything is within easy walking distance. The Jack Steven trail is located less than 100 yards behind the building and offers great access to hundreds of miles of ATV and snowmobile trails!
