About this property

Gorgeous Nantahala Lake Front Log Home Retreat, SEE VIDEO #3 in pics

A traditional log home, completely wood inside and out. Just a small glimpse of heaven from this beautiful lakefront log home with breathtaking views of Nantahala Lake and the mountains surrounding it. The majestic mountains rising out of the crystal clear mountain lake waters are the backdrop for a wonderful vacation. This large body of water towers at the height of 3013 ft above sea level.

The spaces inside are large and comfortable for 10 people. The kitchen is fully equipped and modern with a Jenn-Aire dual fuel gas stovetop cooking and electric baking. The dining table will seat 8 people comfortably and has a view of the lake. The bedrooms all have queen or king beds. The basement has a pool table, a TV and a table top shuffle board table, all for your entertainment. It also has an additional bathroom with a shower/tub combination and a laundry room with a washer and dryer.

There is an outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows and making s'mores or build a fire outside and enjoy. If you choose to bring a boat, there is deep water, concrete, public ramp for launching nearby, and we have a deep water dock for keeping your boat during your stay. The lake is lowered by Duke Energy beginning around the middle of September, and it doesn't come back up until the spring. During these times, the dock will be resting on the lake bottom.
The gentle slope from the house to the lake and dock is easy to walk along the gravel path, which has a few landings. Enjoy sitting outside and watching the lake's water activities.
Photos of the interior can be relied on for a general feel of the furnishings; however, the furnishings may be changed from time to time. Photos of the exterior can be relied on for a general feel of the walk down to the dock. Don't think that they were taken yesterday, they weren't, but it is still the same backyard. The summer months have more foliage on the plants and trees than the winter months. The exterior photos were taken in the cooler months, and we don't show all the seasons in our photos. Heavy rains will cause the pea gravel to move, and that is unfortunate, but we don't have a lawn maintenance person to add more gravel. The mountains are natural, and we want to keep it that way.

There is a Harrah's Casino within a 45-minute drive.

Must be 28 years or older to rent.

The drive to the cabin is about 20 minutes of gravel, single-lane road, and is not conducive to low-riding vehicles.

Keywords: Lake Front Log Home, very private dock, easy access to the dock, lake frontage, nearby rafting, casino, secluded.

Wonderful log home!

We've stayed at a number of cabins on Lake Nantahala and this log home is at the top of the list. The five bedrooms with were perfect for our group of mostly couples, the walk from the cabin to the dock was relatively easy, and the parking situation was great. We loved the cozy, relaxing atmosphere of the cabin.

Private great house, amazing lake

Our second time at Nantahala Lake, again amazing. We had a great time at this house, which was the perfect size, and loved the visits from otters and ducks. The dock was great, and allowed us to enjoy our boat and the lake to the fullest extent.

Great Vacation!

Rented the cabin for 10 nights. Had a great time hanging out on the dock and kayaking on the lake. Rented a Ski boat for 3 days of our stay. Only left the cabin to buy groceries.

Perfect family vacation spot

From the breathtaking lake views, to the cozy yet spacious cabin everything is absolutely amazing. My family and I stayed a week, and didn’t ever want to leave the cabin. Such a relaxing spot and perfect for quality time, everything in the cabin is set up for an unforgettable stay. Highly recommend! The owners are amazing, and so helpful when needing questions answered as we are from Florida and things are a bit different down there. Can’t wait to plan another stay and come back.

Wonderful Property

We rented this property for a gathering of close friends. The house is very well appointed and the location is amazing. We were able to rent a boat that was delivered right to the dock. Would highly recommend this for any large family.

Beautiful Mountain Home

My family and I stayed at the property over 4th of July. The location was beautiful but was very remote as stated in the listings and other reviews. We did not need a 4WD vehicle to navigate the dirt / gravel roads and did just fine.

Cabin trip 2022

We loved everything about the cabin. No complaints! We wanted to be directly on the lake this year so it was perfect. Our kids spent most of the time on the dock fishing and swimming. The screened in porch on the main floor was one of our favorite places to hang out. Beautiful place !

Mountain Heaven

This is such a beautiful home. It is like being inside of the great artist Maxfield Parrish’s “The Garden”. The owner is generous to share such a gem. All vacations must end but this will be remembered for many years to come. The young ones in my group (2,4,6,8 yrs), said they wanted to stay and have us all live there together.

Beautiful & relaxing!

We had the most wonderful time staying at this property! First, the property manager is super responsive and provided amazing information to help with our stay, including directions (which were super accurate!). The house is large and spacious with several places to sit, relax, chat, eat and enjoy the lake views. It is very well appointed and had everything we needed. The dock is in a great location on the lake; we took our paddleboards and paddled every day. There was not much boat traffic on the lake and it was clear, refreshing and the water was glass-like most of the time. There were just three of us, but you could easily host a couple of families and have plenty of space! We will definitely be back!

Wonderful Family Weekend

What a wonderful place! What you read in the listing and the pictures you see reflect exactly what you get (and more). We have rented multiple homes via VRBO and I have to say, this was the best "stocked" house we have stayed in. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare big meals. We had 9 adults and 3 children and we fit very comfortably with room for more. We enjoyed games at the large dining room table, reading and resting in the beautiful screened in porch, dips in the hot tub and swinging on the porch swing looking out over the lake. It was the perfect place to get away and enjoy family. The lake is beautiful - great for kayaking and fishing! We had some questions when we first arrived and the realty company that manages the rental was easy to get in touch with and were able to get a hold of the owner and address our questions very quickly. They even called to check on us and make sure everything was going well - GREAT service! We would definitely recommend this property to anyone.

Family vacation!

The Matern’s cabin is a beautifully designed cabin that accommodates a large group of 10 and you never feel crowded! The lay out of the cabin includes many sitting areas to give everyone the privacy they need. The cabin is situated in a prime location on the lake with a dock and very nice walk way. The owners were very accommodating and informative. Ask questions if you need to know anything! The kitchen is Very well stocked with most anything you will need! We are big cookers and we’re quite comfortable in the kitchen! Drive is not as bad as some say. First trip up is a little Intimidating but gets easier each time! We were there the beginning of June and did not have Four-wheel-drive or all wheel drive and did just fine. Look for the waterfall in finger of lake if you rent a boat. It is well worth the hike up! Wayah bald is beautiful scenery although if you like hiking, try bartram trail near the lakes end marina.

Stunning Location

Stunning and peaceful location! The pictures do not do it justice. House was fully stocked with board games, kitchen items, etc. The driveway/roadway leading there is a bit tricky and as much as you read over the directions it is still hard to find, but don't let that discourage you. You will loose cell service so make sure you print out directions and info. This was our first family vacation with three families coming together and it could not have gone any better. Thank you for sharing this hidden gem!

Best time in the mountains

The cabin and location was awesome. We had the best time. The lake and the views were astounding. The kids had a blast in the cabin, ping pong tournaments, hot tub, being on the lake, making nightly s’mores, catching fire flies, white water rafting, zip-lining, hiking, and rainbow trout fishing for dinner. This is a must do when considering the area. You won’t be let down!

Nantahala summer vacation

The rental property was absolutely gorgeous! The layout and features of the house were really nice, especially the screened in porch with the fireplace. The pool table and ping pong table kept the kids occupied during the rain spouts. The dock was large enough to accommodate our 23ft ski boat And not enough can be said about the lake! We rented kayaks and canoes from the marina. And also enjoyed the Friday, all you can eat fish. On the lake we found the rope swing, waterfall and abundant wildlife. The house was really comfortable for our family!

Mountain Fun

I would like to begin by saying we had a good time at the house. Kids enjoyed swimming in the lake, tubing and we all enjoyed the fire pit and exploring all the area had to offer. The rental instructions were confusing and in places contradicted each other. Trash instructions were also confusing. The house itself is nice, has plenty of space and has a wonderful cabin feel. However, it is getting old and needs a bit of TLC. The carpet in the lower level is a bit old and worn and shows it’s age. The biggest issue we have is the pictures of the outside are not a true representation of what the lake front and path area actually look like. Not sure when they were taken but that isn’t what it looks like now. The path is washed out in spots and is hard to walk, the bushes are over grown and the steams are in disrepair. The lake front is full of logs and branches and was a place where the forest creatures could hang out and become part of your gathering. Again… our family enjoyed the cabin and we had fun. Please update your photos so people can make an informed decision.

Perfect house for a family vacation! Stunning!

We chose this house for our extended family vacation over Thanksgiving. The house was perfect! The setup of the house allowed our family to have plenty time together yet still have quiet spaces to relax in. The house is well appointed with everything you need for a mountain stay. We enjoyed the fireplaces every day. The kids and adults loved the ping pong and pool table downstairs. The owners made sure we had everything we needed and were quick to respond to any questions. If you’re looking for a lovely home to relax, recharge and unwind in while enjoying the beauty and serenity of the mountains, this is the ideal house. We will definitely go back. Loved every minute of being there!

Excellent Get Away

First and foremost the house was incredible. There was plenty of room for our group of 10 to spread out and enjoy the comfortable space. The lake access was amazing and we were able to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather. The house was also extremely clean and well kept. I would definitely rent this property again if I ever plan another mountain/lake vacation.

2nd times a charm........

Literally our 2nd visit to Stoneybrook. We enjoy the time on the lake and accessing the waterfall, the dam, and tubing all via our boat. The entire family all enjoy this cabin, the space, the access, and design of the home. It is a peaceful and a good place breakaway for a bit! Prepare ahead with meals and supplies. Unplug and Enjoy!

About the host

Hosted by Terri Matern

Host profile image
We are from Central Florida. We have two children, both married. We are fortunate enough to have our children living near us and they all love to visit the lake house. Doug and our daughter are both Electrical Engineers and our son is a systems designer. I stayed at home and raised our children and have dabbled with interior design and I work from time to time on projects. We are looking forward to the time that we can stay at the lake house for longer than a week or 2 at a time. That will have to wait for now. Retirement is not in the near future for us.

Why they chose this property

We searched every camping vacation we planned in North Carolina for a piece of land to purchase and dreamed of building a log home on it. We saw an add on the internet one Christmas Day and went up the following April to take a look with the realtor. The lake was crystal clear, so big. We decide to buy right then and there. Looked a few pieces of lakefront property but settled on this beautiful hollow on a large cove along the shoreline of the lake. This story was established in 1998 and we have enjoyed it ever since.

What makes this property unique

We love this property for it's secluded feel and gentle slope to the water, no steps. That is much better for us flat landers. As we turn into the top of the driveway from the road we see our decorative gate and the emblem that says "Est. 1998". As we drive down the 1st part of the drive we are closed in by the beautiful and thick leyland cypress trees that line the driveway. It isn't until we make that first turn that we see the lake and the house. It's always a "wow" moment. The newest feature is the porte-cochere that we just built. A place to park the car without the rain or snow falling on us and covered steps to the front door. The concreted drive make is a breeze to get in and out of the drive now with our 4-wheel drive vehicle. Once we open the front door and walk into the house there is this expansiveness with windows all looking out to the back and the lake. We love the coziness of the exterior gas burning fireplace on the enclosed porch, the wood burning fireplace in the living space and the wood burning fireplace in the back overlooking the lake. The three levels give it the feeling like you may be the only one there while groups of people are playing pool and watching TV on the lower level, some napping in the upper level and hanging around the kitchen and the living space on the entry level. The enclosed porch is where I am most of the time, either reading or browsing the internet with a glass of wine and some cheese and crackers.
