Enjoy!

The Space:
Cottontail Retreat has all the comforts from home, just nestled away at the top of a mountain in the heart of West Virginia. Our newly-renovated cottage is fun for couples, families, or groups of friends -- and is the perfect home base for your getaway!

The cabin includes:
- Two bedrooms, both with queen beds
- Deck with a propane grill and outdoor patio seating
- Fully-stocked kitchen with new appliances
- Fast, reliable WiFi that’s more than enough to stream movies and hold video calls
- Electric heat and AC (to keep you comfortable, no matter the weather)
- Indoor games and puzzles to keep everyone entertained, even on a rainy day
- Smart TV with easy access to sign into all your favorite streaming services

And outside the cabin, you’ll also enjoy:
- Private hot tub, perfect for relaxing when watching the sunset
- Outdoor fire pit with Adirondack chairs for the whole gang
- Outdoor yard game treasure box full of activities for kids and adults: corn hole, soccer and kick balls, horseshoes, and many more!

We often take our three little kids and dog to the cabin with us, so we're very family- and dog-friendly. Unfortunately we don't allow cats (we're allergic).

NOTE: Please be advised you have rented a mountainous property. AWD or 4X4 is recommended. The main and secondary roads are usually paved. However, there are many side roads that are gravel or hard-packed dirt surfaces. You may experience potholes, ruts, steep inclines, and rough terrain. Most front-wheel drive vehicles have no trouble accessing the property from these roads if you drive safely and slowly. We do not recommend low-profile vehicles such as sports cars or motorcycles. During inclement weather such as snow or ice, you may be required to have 4-wheel drive or tire chains. We also recommend Travel Insurance during the winter months. We do not give refunds for road conditions that are out of our control.

Beyond the cabin itself, we’re a short drive away from three main destinations in West Virginia: Berkeley Springs (with great shops and restaurants), Harpers Ferry (for river rafting and Civil War history), and Winchester (the closest of the three, with tons of restaurants and breweries). And of course there are many good hiking trails nearby too!

Super Cute Cabin!

We came to the area for the weekend from Pennsylvania - my boyfriend and our border collie. The cabin was perfect. Super cozy and the location was very peaceful. The hot tub and the fire pit were just what we needed after a day of golf at the Cacapon State Park. Thank you Tony. We really enjoyed our stay!

Cozy retreat

A gem! Very cozy and plenty of roon for our group! We used the grill and hot tub and both perfect! The kitchen is very well stocked! Great water pressure! What a beautiful view, the driveway is a little challenge if not expected;)

HORRIBLE!!!

This place is terrible!!! It desperately NEEDS TLC inside and out. The only good thing about it was the kitchen + grill. The pics do not show how dirty and rundown this cottage is. There are live and dead bugs everywhere. I was looking for a beautiful relaxing time but we were forced to experience the WV rural life - there is a bee hive near the front porch and there were old leaves all around it - I could not let my dog roam around - old leaves is were bugs, spiders, and snakes hide. If I could give it a 0 start, I would. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!

Quiet Cabin

My husband and I and our 9 year old and our dog absolutely loved staying here. It was secluded in the woods, but with neighbors, and only a 15 minute drive to local stores and restaurants. It was very calming and quiet during the day and night. We had everything we needed at the cabin for cooking meals, relaxing, and outdoor activities. The hot tub was a bonus! We drove to Cacopon Park one day to do some hiking and swimming in the lake. Communicating with Tony (owner) was very easy and prompt. I would highly recommend staying here!

Not worth the money

This was not what I expected in a bad way. When arriving at the property the first thing we noticed was that it was not clean. There was garbage laying off to the side of the driveway and inside the building was not clean either. If I am paying the 80-something dollar cleaning fee, I expect it to be clean, which it was not. Also, the carpentry inside the cabin was definitely not done by a carpenter with any kind of experience whatsoever. The mattresses are by far the hardest mattresses we have ever slept on (we travel often). The second night of our stay, as I was showering, the shower stopped draining and began to fill up with water. I got out of the shower and tried the toilet, which just filled up with water and would not drain either. This was close to midnight, and because of medical related issues, we felt that we shouldn’t be staying in a cabin that had no usable bathrooms. We decided to pack up and head home at midnight (a 3.5 hour drive) and we let the owner know immediately of the situation. His response included a basic “sorry” and a “I hope you enjoyed your stay anyways”. No offer to give us a discount or a refund for the second night, which I think should be offered since we were unable to complete our stay because of no fault of our own, and we drove all night to get home. All in all, this property is not very accommodating and the owner definitely is not very courteous to guests when there are issues with his property. I very much feel like I was ripped off.

Great stay!

My wife and I had a great time! Our dog also joined and loved it. Close to great hiking spots, state park. Owner is fantastic and has extremely fast responses to messages.

I live in DC with my wife and three young kids. I love camping/hiking, drinking (and sometimes brewing) great beer and wine, exploring new restaurants and shops, and traveling all over.

Why they chose this property

We spent years searching for the perfect getaway, and wanted to be close enough to DC that we could do a day trip. We fell in love with the area – and Cottontail retreat in particular. We love how cute and cozy our cabin is, and all the fun outdoor activities we can enjoy year-round. :)
