About this property

Golden Gate Park & Museums 1 Block Away; Garage, Laundry Room, EV Charger

The San Francisco Duck’s Nest is a huge, sunny, 2 bedroom, Edwardian flat which has just been completely renovated. With walnut wainscoting, inlaid oak hardwood floors, fireplace, and polished brass fixtures throughout, it combines classic San Francisco with all modern conveniences. “If you are going to San Francisco”, and want to stay in a home that truly makes you feel warm and welcomed the minute you enter, with a garage and complete laundry room, and/or enjoy running, cycling, or walking in Golden Gate Park, this is the location!

Most folks visiting San Francisco often spend at least a day visiting Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum, Academy of Sciences, Japanese Tea Gardens, or strolling through the world famous Conservatory of Flowers. There is something nice about getting up, having a cup of coffee at home (or at the coffee shop around the corner), and just walking to the end of the block to enjoy these activities.

With The Duck’s Nest as your home in San Francisco, you will have a new 55” Sony Bravia High Definition television with home theatre surround sound system, complete with DirecTV/HBO/DVR and a video library of 25+movies filmed in SF, computer/printer/Wi-Fi, new granite counter tops in the kitchen , all new stainless steel appliances (refrigerator, chef range, dishwasher), a laundry room with new frontloading washer and dryer, new 23' Samsung Hi-Def television in master bedroom (DirecTV/HBO), and a secure garage with extra storage space for large items (golf clubs, bicycles, kayaks, etc.)

The wonderful, central, location of The Duck’s Nest will help make your visit to San Francisco so easy and convenient, you’ll want to leave the car in the garage. A new, upscale, grocery store with full deli is one block away, go one block in another direction and there’s a children’s playground. Restaurants of almost every ethnicity and type (from high end French cuisine to classic American diner) and pubs galore (some with live entertainment) are a 10-15 minute walk from your front door. Four major bus-lines (1 to 3 blocks away) take you to all other major sightseeing attractions in San Francisco and a 15-20 minute walk will get you to the University of San Francisco campus, the Haight Ashbury district, or the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.

And lastly, you’ll find all the “small but important” things within The Duck’s Nest to make your stay enjoyable, fun, and special. A master bedroom, quiet, and romantically secluded in the back and away from the living and dining room, complete with superior linens and regular/memory foam/orthopedic/Euro pillows. A bathroom with 8 sets of elegant bath linens and plush terry cloth robes. A kitchen with small appliances, cooking utensils, a ceiling mounted pots/pan rack, and a stainless steel preparation table with stools underneath so you don’t have to stand when cooking gourmet meals. A laundry room to do your wash while you sleep, cook, or go out for the day or evening. A living room where you’ll choose between kicking back in a cozy recliner, stretching out on a comfy couch with bunches of pillows, curling up in a huge overstuffed chair, or checking out the French pane bay window seat (somehow folks always seem to like doing this!)

So choose from among The Duck’s Nest sightseeing guide books, family board games, or DVD’s from our collection of popular San Francisco movies, perhaps something like Escape from Alcatraz or The Rock if you are planning on visiting Alcatraz tomorrow. Toss a self-lighting Dura-Flame log into the fireplace, curl up on the couch and enjoy.

You’re home in San Francisco.

Fabulous stay

I enjoyed a wonderful stay at Rob’s home. The house is very comfortable from the beds to the recliner chair. The house is fully stocked with anything you could need for a long stay. The location is perfect, one block from Golden Gate Park, 2 blocks from Safeway and close to many restaurants. Rob is friendly and helpful. I extended my stay twice. I look forward to returning.

Duck’s Nest Could not possibly been better!

Our stay seriously couldn’t have been better. Robert was the most excellent gentleman to deal with. The ducks nest was an epic place and it provided everything we could’ve possibly asked for. It was impeccably maintained, spacious and he provided all the amenities in a fashion way beyond what we needed. Robert was very communicative with us as well and the stay we had for seven weeks was something I’ll ever forget. The process and booking was also seamless. I would highly recommend this VRBO from Robert and his place in San Francisco, which was in a tremendous location and easily accessible to everything we wanted to enjoy in San Francisco. Kudos to Robert in a big way!!! Thank you.

Golden Gate Park Gem

Our stay in San Francisco at the Duck's Nest exceeded our expectations. We loved being so close to Golden Gate Park and riding our bikes all around the city. The home is clean and comfortable with plush towels and comfy bedding. The entire house is well stocked and one does not need to bring anything extra as all is provided for. The house itself has a neat history and the neighbors along the street were nice to meet. We stayed over five weeks and we were very sad to leave. Best of all is the owner Rob, who is a delight and a wealth of San Francisco knowledge. We hope to return again soon!

Very charming flat in a great location!

We stayed here for 7 months while our house was being remodeled (more than we expected). Overall, it was a great place to stay. There's plenty of room: 2 bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, and pantry. Our favorite feature was all the natural light, given windows on all sides (unusual for a SF row house). We also appreciated the garage parking spot; street parking is in short supply. The location also is great. 1/2 block from GG Park, near the museums, bandstand, and Tea Garden; great walking, running, bike riding, skating, people watching, music in the park, holiday lights, etc. It's also within close walking distance to some great restaurants, a local coffee shop, and a Safeway grocery store. And you can get anywhere in the city in minutes by car or public transport. Also worthy of praise is Rob, the proprietor. He's just a great guy. Very communicative, pro-active, and knowledgeable about the area (an SF resident since the Summer of Love). Hope you enjoy your stay in the Duck's Nest as much as we did.

Feeling Like a Local

The Duck's Nest is a lovely place for a relaxed San Francisco stay in a quiet and charming neighbourhood. Lots of convenient stores and good restaurants within walking distance (more on that later). Having a garage is great and owner Rob is most helpful in making sure all is well. The apartment is very clean, well equipped and comfortable. I loved the wood deck out back, sitting on the steps with morning coffee or evening wine, watching the fog roll in or out. I have family nearby and this will be my place of choice to come back to - I already look forward to my next stay!

Rob and Diana have the perfect home to explore and enjoy all that San Francisco has to offer. Location was ideal. Right next to GG Park and many many great restaurants. The garage made life great for parking and stowing our bikes. Rob was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Everything we needed was supplied and made for easy living. Thanks Rob for helping to make our month in San Francisco a perfect stay.

Wonderful and memorable stay that exceeded our expectations

We are frequent visitors in SF and love the city and especially the Golden Gate park. We stayed at the Duck's Nest for almost 4 months (a family of 4, including 2 kids, plus a nanny and a dog). Overall, I don't think there is a better place in the market in terms of location, amenities, owner availability and hospitality and price. The place is not super fancy and super modern, but this is not what predetermined the best memories for us during our stay. The apartment has literally everything you need to enjoy the stay, including washing and drying machines and a garage where we left both our car and a stroller, etc. The location is just superb: within 1 block from the GG park and nearby playgrounds for kids, museums, botanical gardens, etc. and many nice cafes and restaurants in a walking distance, plus a large Safeway grocery just 2 blocks away. The neighborhood is quiet, as well as the neighbors. The owners have been extremely nice and accommodating to all our requests and are just great people that we enjoying talking to and already miss them - this was a great bonus that you do not normally expect. A perfect fit for a mid-term family stay in a wonderful city.

Wonderful holiday stay at Duck's Nest

We had a wonderful stay at the Duck's Nest for Christmas and New Year's. The house was beautifully decorated for the holidays when we arrived. It was very well provisioned with everything we needed. Just one block from Golden Gate Park and plenty of room in the garage for our car. It was the perfect place for us. Thank you Rob and Lisa!

Awesome Location with Great Owners

The location is amazing, especially if you have children or want to explore the many museums and activities in Golden Gate Park. The rest of the city is a convenient drive, and city buses are just down the street for those without a car. The owners were extremely nice, helpful and quickly attended to any issues that came up during our stay. They even provided child gates, high chairs and kid dishes for our children, which was greatly appreciated! The neighborhood is peaceful too, and the private garage and in-unit laundry are really convenient. The place feels homey and has everything you need (office supplies, kitchen supplies, toiletries, etc). Would definitely recommend staying here!

lovely appartment for a wonderful stay in SF

We spent 4 weeks at the Duck nest for a wonderful and unforgettable stay in SF. We were four adult people (parents, two daughters). We fully confirm all the compliments of our predecessors and we had everything we needed for our quite prolonged stay. The appartment is cosy and functional, well located at the edge of the Golden park (5 mn walk to the main museum), the area is quiet and lovely, and we used the bus 5 at the street corner which was very convenient to reach all the sites of interest of the city. We could also appreciate the kindness and availibility of Rob for all his valuable advises, especially when our oldest daughter needed urgent dentist care (!). We highly recommend the Duck nest to everyone who would like to visit SF and the area. Special thank you also to our successors (former renters) approached by Rob, who have kindly accepted to move their booking in order to let us extend our stay in California.

The hosts of Ducks Nest are the nicest you will find

We stayed at Ducks Nest for a month and could not have been happier. Everything was as described. The hosts were such good people, prompt with information, easy to get hold of in case of issues and very responsive to requests. The location is in a nice neighborhood, 2 blocks from GG park and close to wonderful restaurants. We really felt we were living in a neighborhood home and not in a touristy part of town at all. We will definitely be back.

The Ducks Nest

We just spent 5 nights at this wonderful home. We needed 3 separate sleeping spaces and although this is a two bedroom there is a cozy daybed in the dining room, which can be closed off for privacy. The house is spotless! At every turn there are dining guides, instructions for use of the washer/dryer (so convenient), the Internet, TV, and a guest book. There are travel books and every household/personal need was easily satisfied. There are thick white towels, robes and toiletries! Actually no need to bring your hair dryer or shampoo it's all there ! We arrived a few hours early and my son in law was really feeling sick. No problem, Rob gave us early access! Oh and there is a garage, but you are only a block from the Golden Gate Park! Enjoy your stay!

Best stay with VRBO ever!

We are frequent VRBO stayers and rely heavily on reviews, so we were careful on this. Background - we came to SF to be there for our first grandchild and needed a pet friendly place with two bedrooms and close to the Western Addition. We have absolutely no criticism's of the Duck's Nest and the owners. Some of the great (and not all) things we found included: a well prepared / stocked home down to unbelievable detail, everything worked, we had a garage (and parking in front), great access to Golden Gate park, enough room to watch sports events / movies in the living room for (6) plus pets, very comfortable beds, a great laundry room, kitchen and back yard. Finally Lisa, Diana and Rob Duca were great hosts / owners!! It was simply perfect for us! BTW, we had a healthy grandson!

Awesome vacation rental

Our first visit to San Francisco was easy and enjoyable thanks to finding The Duck's Nest on VRBO. We spent a week there with our 23-year old son, and the spacious flat was so much better than staying in a cramped hotel room. It had everything we needed and wanted, so we felt like we were coming home after each long day of sightseeing. The one thing I should mention is there are a lot of steep stairs to get inside, so if you have much luggage or can't do stairs, then this might be a problem. Otherwise, it is easy access to the grocery store and bus stops and Golden Gate Park. Other added bonuses are the comfortable beds, nice shower and good wi-fi....three things we always look for in a rental! Thanks to Rob for doing a great job communicating before, during and after our stay as well....we really appreciated it!!

Great Location

I believe anyone would love the opportunity that this property and its location offers. The residence is comfortable and clean, Has easy access to shopping and restaurants, a walk in the park, and has mass transit to every corner of the city. We rented a vehicle and had a garage to park in which parking is premium. The best part of this property is the owners who see to your every need. Loved it.

Perfect place

This home is the best vacation rental we've ever stayed in, and we've stayed at several. Great home, great location, and great owner! Clean, super comfy beds, and walking distance to groceries and restaurants. We were grandparents with 3 kids ages 7-14, and it was the perfect location. We enjoyed the golden gate park, Academy of science, and hop on hop off bus. Really great place!

It couldn't have been better

We spent four nights at the Duck's Nest at the beginning of a two week California trip, and it really couldn't have been better. The property is clean, comfortable, spacious, homely, and astonishingly well-equipped - it has everything you need, including lots of things you didn't really think about, but Rob did, so when you realise you need it, it's there. The neighbourhood is great, with the park literally at the end of the street, a supermarket 5 minutes away, and easy transport connections to everywhere. We were also lucky enough to meet Rob on our last day, and he's a lovely guy, and gave us some great advice on the drive down to Monterey.

About the host

Hosted by Lisa, Diana, and Rob Duca

Host profile image
Diana and I are proud to welcome you to our home, The San Francisco Duck’s Nest! Just as you are carefully choosing a place which will make your visit special, we too are looking for thoughtful, caring, special folks who will care for our home as if it were their own. The Duck’s Nest gets its name from Rob’s longtime nickname “the Duck” (although we are not even certain whether ducks’ actually build nests!) and the sense of friendly, inviting, “coziness” that 90 year old restored homes just seem to provide. Somehow, people just seem to have fun and feel good here. Diana and I enjoy an active lifestyle, with cycling (last year Rob thought it would be a good idea to ride his bicycle across the U.S. and he actually did it), hiking, and dogs being high on our list of fun things to do. Throughout the years, Diana and I have always found that time spent with family and friends is what really makes living in San Francisco so wonderful, and oh, what tales The Nest could tell! From 25 years of Memorial All-Day Picnics with volleyball in the Park, to seasons of 49’er and Giant’s games, to countless rock ‘n roll/country/reggae/opera/bluegrass music concerts and comedy festivals in the park, to 100,00+ people Bay to Breaker runs each spring, to an evening on the town, to sightseeing with out-of-town visitors. Afterwards, so many evenings always ended with laughter late into the night at The Nest. Arriving in San Francisco during that magical “Summer of Love” in 1967, raising our children (Lisa and Ben), and working for the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy for many years, we have called 9th Avenue home until just recently. Like many of our generation, we now care for an elderly parent outside of San Francisco and that leaves The Nest empty at times. But like the chorus of Tony Bennett’s song, our heart (and the laughter!) will always be there.

Why they chose this property

Location, location, location! We’ve already mentioned how close The Duck’s Nest is to Golden Gate Park’s major attractions (the de Young Museum, the Academy of Sciences, Japanese Tea Gardens, Conservatory of Flowers) and that most San Francisco visitors usually spend at least a day visiting them. While these attractions are literally at the end of the block, the Golden Gate Park tennis courts are a 10 minute walk, paddle boating at Stow Lake is a 10 minute walk, the fly-fishing casting pools are a 20 minute walk, there’s even a nine hole golf course in the park (betcha didn’t know that!) And at night, the Academy and its Planetarium has a weekly event – where else can you enjoy music, science, entertainment, and cocktails! Since it is close to the geographical center of San Francisco, The Duck’s Nest makes going anywhere easy: A new, upscale, full delicatessen, Safeway grocery store is one city block away. If you don’t feel like going out to eat, it’s nice to grab groceries or a bite that’s close by. Three major bus lines run downtown (#5 Fulton, #31 Balboa are one block away; #38 Geary is 3 blocks away) to Market Street, connect to all attractions, and avoid the hassle of SF driving and SF parking costs at $5-$20 an hour. Going to Ocean Beach, the Clift House, or Palace Legion of Honor? It’s simple – 15 minutes in the opposite direction. The Golden Gate Bridge is a 20 minute ride (#28 19th Ave/Presidio bus line 3 blocks away). The University of San Francisco is a 15 minute walk and the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center is a 20 minute walk. It’s a 5-10 minute walk to Balboa Street, inner Sunset, and Clement Street restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs. And lastly, if you are planning a day trip north to Sausalito, Muir Woods, Napa Valley or south to Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay it’s a 2 minute drive to Park Presidio Drive (US1).

What makes this property unique

The Duck’s Nest is over 100 years old, having been built in 1913. It was constructed by an Italian contractor and between the kitchen, the pantry, and the dining room, almost 40% of the living space is devoted to enjoying meals together as a family. During the holidays or when the temperatures in San Francisco are chilly, nothing beats a family dinner of pasta, lighting the fireplace, and then settling down to watch a football game or movie on a surround sound home theatre system. Our son, Ben, had allergies, so in each bedroom there are HEPA filers if needed. On the same floor and off the kitchen is a laundry room, with a new Samsung front loading washer and new Samsung gas dryer. If traveling, it’s great to catch up your wash as you go to sleep or before going out sightseeing or while making a dinner – and never have to leave home. If you are travelling with bicycles, other large items, you don’t have to carry them upstairs to your room for safety. The garage and adjacent storage areas are secure and such items can be left downstairs. And if you enjoy eating out, American, Chinese, Thai, seafood, Dim Sum, Korean, Italian, Russian, Mexican, and too many other ethnic restaurants are minutes away by walking, as well as some great Irish Pubs!
