About this property

Tropical Garden Retreat with Private Spa and Plunge Pool

Comfortable and private for two guests, Casa Rica is located in a gated 5 acre estate of tropical gardens, fruit trees and exotic plants. The scent of ylang ylang trees perfume the air and the view from your porch is of large Guanacaste trees, exotic flowers, and the jungle faced coastal mountain range. The fruit garden provides a bounty of bananas, starfruit, coconuts, mango, citrus and more.

The interior of the house is Balinese wood, having been designed and built on the island of Bali Indonesia and transported to Costa Rica. The king sized bed is extra comfortable with a a pillow top mattress, and the full bathroom and kitchen bring all the comforts of home. There is a security safe for valuables. The private plunge pool will refresh and is surrounded by deck and steps to the Balinese gazebo. From the porch, the mountain and garden views are beautiful with many birds and butterflies making their home, including morphos - the electric blue butterfly.

The gardens are ever changing with seasonal fruits and flowers at hand for your enjoyment. There are paths throughout the 5 acre estate which will lead you through the botanical zen garden, the Labyrinth, through bamboo groves to the Spa House, the meditation stream, or wherever you wander. You may hear the call of the area resident rainbow macaws, along with many other bird species.

And for those considering a more permanent situation in Costa Rica, we will be happy to guide you to trustworthy people who can show you available property in the area.

No 4wd vehicle is necessary to access this property. This retreat will feel remote, but is convenient to activities the area has to offer.

This area of Costa Rica is ideal for lovers of gourmet cuisine with a number of the area's finest restaurants. There's also a popular French bakery nearby with delicious breads, and a Licorcia for those looking for special ingredients to cook at home.

Just 5 minutes away is one of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches, Ventanas Beach, and the popular surfer's beach in Dominical, is approximately 30 minutes north. The newly built San Buenas Golf Course is 10 minutes away, and many other local attractions are close by; horseback riding, zip lines, off shore fishing and boating, etc.. For book lovers there is a library within walking distance.

A perfect retreat, honeymoon hideaway, or for the solitude of one, Casa Rica is a place which can be a comfortable home base for exploring the riches of Costa Rica, or a private hideaway to rest and revive.

Absolutely Delightful!

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful and unique property. We loved the gardens and all the bird song in the morning. We had plenty of privacy, but did not feel isolated. Our casita had everything we needed and the plunge pool was a gift after long days exploring the area! Sharon had lots of great recommendation for things to do and was a pleasure to work with. A 5 star vacation!

Private get away

My husband and I stayed for four nights. Location was easy to find. Check in process was easy as well. Cute little private cabin. Lovely property overall with 5 acres of walking trails and gardens available to the guests. For the most part the property was as described. The listing indicated a grill but there was none on arrival. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and silverwear but cookware was very slim. There was one skillet and two small saucepans for meal prep. There were no larger bowls or containers to use for anything like mixing salads or side dishes and there were no containers for the storage of any leftovers. This did change our plans for eating during the 4 days that we stayed here. We had hoped to be able to grill and make a salad or side dish since it was clear from the listing that the indoor kitchen space was smaller with just a two burner cooktop. A grill also would have been beneficial because here on the Pacific side of the country near the beach, it was very hot during our stay. This property had a wonderful fan but no air conditioning so outdoor cooking options would have been very beneficial. We ended up eating out for our time in Ojochal instead. The private pool is very nice and we took advantage of it on several occasions. The property felt very secure and the addition of a safe for valuables was much appreciated. Overall this was a really cute place to stay and Rob and Jen, our direct contacts on the property, made us feel very welcome.

Wish I had known.......

Wish I had known there was NO Air Conditioning in this small retreat. No where anywhere was this indicated and it most definitely should be. If not for sheer comfort, then perhaps for people with health issues. When we were visiting, the weather was it the upper 90s. My husband and I are very active and after full days of hiking, we came back to a place all closed up and when you open the doors, it was hotter inside than outside - there was no relief at all - except to go sit outside in the dipping pool. My husband had to get up at all hours of the night to go sit in the pool to cool off. We had to leave our stay early and go stay in a hotel. I will also note that there is no grill, no microwave, no oven, no "stove" (a 2 burner cooktop), no books, no entertainment in the place whatsoever - these were all mentioned in the amenities. Plus side: The acreage it sits on is very beautiful. It is very lush, green, full of trees and flowers of every kind. It has a meditation pavilion, labyrinth, trails, etc. It is peaceful and quiet and close to many activities. So, if a tiny mini-split unit was put in, it would be so much more enjoyable. I live in a very warm climate in the United States, but I found staying in a small place in a very, very hot environment that I am not use to, most uncomfortable. I am the type of person who never, ever complains - I am just stating how it was so that perhaps others who may not be able to handle stagnate heat can think it through.

Beautiful place!

Our stay at Sharon and Mac's property was fantastic from beginning to end. The grounds are as beautiful as any park in Costa Rica, filled with fragrant flowers and many types of birds that I had never seen before. The pool was spotless. With that and all the screened windows, we didn't miss air conditioning at all. A+!

GARDEN OF EDEN

"Like being in what I imagine the Garden of Eden to be" is how I described Bali Rica to our friends and family. We are so lucky to have stayed the few days here that we did, but would've loved to have stayed longer. It was everything that we hoped it would be, totally living up to the property description and reviews. If we had done nothing else in Ojachal but stayed on the property.we'd have been totally content, but there is so much to do in the area. There were several beaches just minutes away by car and many amazing restaurants. We hadn't known that Ojachal is considered a foodie destination. Score!! The sunsets were breathtaking and we experienced them from several different hotel/restaurants in the area. We found the people of Costa Rica to be incredibly warm and hospitable and it was no different at Bali Rica. Though we missed meeting the owners, the caretakers, Melissa and Osvaldo, were wonderful. They provided a tour of the grounds upon welcoming us and were very quick to respond when the oscillating fan (which was an added bonus!) stopped working. We couldn't have asked for anything more. I highly recommend Bali Rica if you're looking for peace, serenity, relaxation and romance.

Great Location, Very Relaxing!!!

My wife and I spent about a week in Costa Rica to celebrate our 15th anniversary. We couldn't have had a better place to stay, and our hosts Sharon and Mac were great. We were welcomed by Sharon, who showed us Casa Rica where we'd be staying, and made herself available as a resource throughout the trip. Her Banana Bread and fruit basket was an added plus. Sharon provided great insight on our activities during our stay and offered recommendations on the best places to eat. Casa Rica was a great place somewhat isolated, which allowed us to retreat from the hustle of the day with a cooling dip in the plunge pool or a walk down to the creek, and even some time at the Ojochal Water Falll. The farthest we traveled was less than an hour away, which was also great. Things were close enough to be convenient but far enough to give us some added privacy in the evenings. I recommend this spot to anyone, and will likely stay here on our next trip to Costa Rica!

Pure Paradise

Our stay was everything we hoped for, and more. Sharon is an amazing host, and her banana bread is delicious!!! The property is secluded and beautiful. From the fruit trees, to the flowers, and the walkway throughout the property. We enjoyed sitting on the porch, listening to nature while having our morning coffee. The cabina is equipped with all of the necessities, but the restaurants in the area are amazing. Tortuga Beach is a must, when the tide is out, and hopefully you will see the flock of macaws......truly breathtaking!!!! We highly recommend Bali Rica while in the south of Costa Rica........thank you Sharon!!

Very special place in a serene garden setting

My husband and I stayed in the Bali Rica cabina, and our good friends stayed in the cabina that is also on the property. Ours was perfect, because we had our privacy and our own plunge pool, but we could walk a little through the garden and through the bamboo to visit our friends at their place (which was also very nice with a screened-in porch with beautiful outdoor sofa and its own small dipping pool). The Balinese architecture and craftsmanship of our cabina is very unique, and Sharon will tell you how they constructed it in Bali and shipped it to Costa Rica. It is exquisite. The large bed was also very comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed. The best part is the garden though, as it is has been carefully landscaped with gorgeous trees, flowers, and walking paths that lead to a stream. The parrots and toucans also appreciate the beauty and hang out here. Sharon was a wonderful host, but I think the thing we and our friends will remember the most is her fabulous care package with homemade banana bread that is the best we have ever tasted. We enjoyed sitting on our veranda with our strong Costa Rican coffee and the banana bread in the morning. The other great part about this home is that it is not far at all to the town, and the road is pretty flat (compared to some other roads and parts of Ojochal). We particularly enjoyed the restaurants in Ojochal like Exotica and Citrus. We highly recommend this place and Ojochal for a tropical taste of Costa Rica.

Exceptional Property!

Our stay at Bali Rica was one of the highlights of our month in Costa Rica (and we stayed in 8 different properties!) Everything about our visit, from the artful decor of the casita to the exquisite gardens showcased host Sharon's attention to detail to create a place of beauty and serenity. I am still dreaming about reading on the outside covered daybed and cooling off in the private plunge pool. The bed is supremely comfortable with high quality sheets and lovely batique accents. The kitchen was well equipped. Our favorite pastime was just sitting on the porch, lovely breeze from the fans, gazing at the tropical garden, the huge bamboo and listening to the parrots fly overhead! We stretched in the screened in yoga studio and wandered the trails. Honestly, the property is just gorgeous with so many flowering and fruit trees and lush tropical greenery. Sharon even encouraged us to pick some wild ginger and harvest some lemongrass and greens from her garden. Private, gated, safe and quiet. Bali Rica is ideally located in Ojochal...close to the French bakery and the best restaurants , try Exotica! Our favorite beach was Tortuga, go early in the morning and you may see a flock of scarlet macaws. Breathtaking! Thank you, Sharon, for a truly memorable stay! We have every intention of returning. Highly recommended!

So helpful and understanding

I had the great pleasure of working with Sharon in planning a trip. I unfortunately was unable to come due to injuries from a car accident. She was unbelievably helpful during my planning and I actually cried when I had to cancel. All VRBO owners should be this nice and accommodating.

Peaceful Paradise

My husband and I (from Chicago) recently stayed at Casa Rica and loved everything about it. We were greeted by Sharon with a basket of fruits from the gardens, and homemade banana bread. The property has beautiful paths to walk with birds, animals and privacy. The dipping pool was a great way to end the day. The bed was comfortable and the ceiling fans made all the difference. Sharon gave us excellent ideas on where to travel in the area along with where to eat. We drove 40 min to the Sierpe River for a mangrove tour. This is well worth it. We discovered some waterfalls in Ojochal for swimming and a great french bakery. We hope to return to this piece of heaven on earth. We are grateful to have found Casa Rica and appreciate all the little extras that Sharon and Mac do to make this an exceptional place to visit. This is our seventh trip to Costa Rica and will be back. Thank you!!

Perfect Accomodation

Casa Rica and Casa Bambu were the perfect accomodations for our third trip to Costa Rica. This time we travelled with our son and his wife. Staying here allowed each couple privacy but certainly made it easy to plan our daily excursions. What we liked about this vacation rental was the fact that you felt like you had plenty of space for relaxation and exploring. The grounds of course are beautiful as each review has stated. Sharon went well out of her way to help us daily but especially for 2 unplanned mishaps and did so graciously. We did find that the dipping pool was our favorite. Our tip is to hit the pool before showering and settling in for the night. It really lowers your core temperature and makes the evening totally comfortable. We had absolutely everything we needed from towels, clothesline, dishes, comfy king size bed, fruits, beautiful scenery abd we cannot leave out the very aromatic ylang ylang. What a treat each time you entered the property to notice that wonderful fragrance. It was our silent greeter. :) We gladly give an excellent rating as Sharon and Mac have worked so very hard to make sure their property exceeds all expectations. Thank you! We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend to anyone staying in the southern zone.

Peak Experience

One of the peak experiences of our travels anywhere was attained at Bali Rica. In the hills above the village of Ojochal our hosts, Sharon and Mac, have created Paradise within an area that is still raw, unspoiled rainforest and jungle. After being in the Central Valley highlands for a week, being close to the ocean was a bit warmer and more humid, but never oppressive, with beautiful sunny mornings practically every day. The cool dip just outside the back door was a perfect balance. Just steps away was a gorgeous pagoda where a queen bed awaited - Nirvana. Not only is the property jawdropping, but the neighborhood, with its excellent roads, is really pretty, and a joy for taking walks (with friendly neighbors also out for their morning constitutionals). The attention to detail is everywhere at Bali Rica, and you see it unfold as you explore all the nooks and crannies inside and outside the elegant, authentic Balinese cabina. A welcome basket was provided to nourish the body: Sharon had prepared scrumptious banana bread, and provided eggs from her chickens, bananas and limes from their trees -- all delicious. To soothe the mind, we meandered the lovingly landscaped grounds, observed the mysterious and ancient stone circle, and silently walked the labyrinth. We woke to the sounds of the jungle, parrots calling out, toucans overhead, and visits from the friendly ducks with their tiny ducklings and three friendly dogs. To elevate the spirit there were reminders everywhere of the interconnectedness of life, and that manifesting a vision of beauty and peacefulness (tranquilo) can occur anywhere. The yoga pavilion is another work of art that offers weekly classes from a fine Iyengar teacher. Sharon's healing hands should not be missed. Just do not operate heavy machinery after a session with her. A surprise awaits as you find your way to the creek and Buddha resting against an ancient tree trunk above a reflection pool. (Om Shanti). The time spent with Sharon and Mac was the icing on the cake. There are just no words to describe their love and generosity. TEN STARS are necessary for this place. We will be back!!!!!

Great Honeymoon House

Casa Rica was perfect honeymoon spot. Wife and I can be schizo vacationers, very hard to please--we want to be able to surf and have a night out, but also cook and laze around. This place had all bases covered. Sharon and Mac are perfect hosts, and clearly love this house and its lush grounds. The town, Ojochal, has loads of nice restaurants and is surrounded by nice beaches and hikes. Stay at Casa Rica.

Our Second Visit

We were so impressed with Costa Rica in general and Sharon and Mac as hosts that when we wanted to travel somewhere it was easy to decide to make a second visit to Casa Rica. In the year since our first visit they have added a second guest cottage that will be great when we travel with friends in the future. All the things we enjoyed so much on our first visit were even better since we were familiar with the area. There is plenty to do, the property is conveniently located and it has everything you could need. We highly recommend this property as well as Sharon and Mac as very accomodating and friendly hosts. We look forward to going again in the future.

Balinese Jungle Eden

My husband and I stayed at both Casa Rica and Casa Tika during our stay in Costa Rica and we truly felt that Mac and Sharon’s beautiful properties were the simply magical. The gardens are breathtaking; they have created a Balinese jungle Eden located in a small quaint French-Canadian town called Ojochal, pronounced Ohochal. The general atmosphere is peaceful and positive and if you have a chance, I highly recommend getting a massage at the Spa. Sharon is one of the best masseuses I have ever been to! The plunge pool was my husband’s favorite place to be and it was really nice to be able to take a dip during the day. And we especially liked taking relaxing walks and meditating in the various reflection spots located on trails running throughout the property. The property also has lots of yummy things to eat fresh from their garden: We ate their fresh bananas daily, fresh eggs from their happy chickens, and fresh coconut water – all we needed to do is ask their wonderful gardener Minor to cut down the coconuts for us. There are many restaurant options to eat at in a variety of price ranges – all within walking distance (longest 15-20 minutes) with much to experience and see surrounding Ojochal. Both Mac and Sharon are the loveliest hosts making us feel welcome and comfortable from the moment we arrived. They really have figured out the perfect way balancing being very helpful while never overstepping on their guest’s privacy. We will definitely be going back to Costa Rica and we plan to come back to the Casa Rica or Casa Tika again.

Originally Mac is from Texas and Sharon is from New Jersey. We met on the island of Andros in the Bahamas, and fell in love 'underwater' in the blue seas. That was many years ago and we've since traveled the world, and have found our home here in beautiful Costa Rica.
Having lived for some years in Bali Indonesia, we were enchanted by the feel and beauty of the island, and have tried to bring a taste of that to our home here. Casa Rica in fact was built in Bali and transported here to Costa Rica.
The Costa Rica lifestyle is laid back and the locals are friendly and welcoming. We love the remoteness and incredible scenery, plus the eclectic community Ojochal has to offer. Really great restaurants too!
Casa Rica, Casa Bambu and Palm Spa are a dream come true for us. We enjoy spending our time doing projects on the property, making it a more enjoyable place to spend our time and share with travelers.
Pura Vida!
