About this property

Best Location! Walk, Shop & Eat on Summit, Grand & Selby; Sleeps 15!

Welcome to the "Gatsby Getaway" an extraordinary home where modern amenities meet historical detail! Enjoy bluff views from the gracious front porch, where a young F. Scott Fitzgerald used to visit his friend Sam to plan boyhood adventures, and ride the streetcar to and from downtown St Paul.
The Gatsby Getaway is ideal for large groups or family gatherings: we have hosted and are a perfect spot for family wedding weekends, girlfriend reunions, 70th birthday celebrations, work retreats, and more--see additional rave reviews in photo area. Home is near major roads and a freeway for easy access to area attractions, but is high on the bluff, making it a quiet and serene escape!

-Walk to dining & shops on Selby or Grand; just blocks to the Cathedral and over 30 restaurants and coffee shops, 5 minutes to events at XCel Center and downtown St Paul, 15 minutes from MSP airport, downtown Minneapolis and the convention center!

Your whole group will be comfy in this 5600sf getaway, designed by architect Cass Gilbert, with spaces to both gather or find solitude. Enjoy socializing in the gracious front living spaces, and cooking together in the spacious, open, eat-in kitchen with adjoining 3 season sun room and formal dining. Private library with desk for quiet working space.

Five bedrooms on the second floor, with walk-in closets and plenty of bedding, towels and a free laundry; two bedrooms on third floor, with large TV and entertaining area which includes a full kitchen for an additional apartment-style space.
Fully stocked kitchen with plenty of barware, wine fridge, ice maker, serving pieces and even formal china for 16! Your hosts are right next door for any last minute needs. Please text with any questions!

Guest access: The whole house, from main floor spaces to the top of the turret are yours to explore and enjoy. --Please note the primary bathroom suite's shower is shared by another bathroom - some coordination may be required within your party. And while we painstakingly clean and care for the home from top to bottom, note this home is over 134 years old: though greatly cared for, it may occasionally show its age in a few places. Though we strive for perfection, expect to find some charming patina both inside and outside.

Overall, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time in this hidden gem of a neighborhood, where neighbors wave and gather on front porches to drink coffee or wine, and where kids still run barefoot down the sidewalks, chasing lightning bugs. The historic area itself is just fantastic: Steps to both 599 Summit Ave, where F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his first novel, "This Side of Paradise," and to the Commodore, where he lived with Zelda and eventually their daughter Scottie: "We got to the Commodore in St. Paul, and while the leaves blew up the street we waited for our children to be born." Saint Paul has the nation's longest stretch of Victorian homes; walks though out the neighborhood during any season are beautiful!

This elegant home is ideal for anyone from couples to a group of 14 to enjoy time together, and especially for lovers of history! The neighborhood is a quiet escape in the middle of the city: to preserve the quiet, neighborhood feel, city rules prevent use of this property for any events or parties: please know to be respectful of our neighbors, unauthorized or unapproved guests or loud parties are cause for eviction.

We welcome you to enjoy a comfortable step back in time in the most beautiful and well appointed short stay in St Paul!

Our stay was awesome in this lovely older home! The attention to detail in everything was evident! Communication with the owner was excellent and the location could not be beat! We had plenty of room for 3 families and the kids loved the 3rd floor area! Will be back for sure!

Authentic Slice of old Saint Paul!

This property is, in a word, superb (as is the host, Linda!). The house is grand, yet so inviting and comfortable. So many lovely bedrooms and plenty of clean, functional baths -- we were two couples and two singles, and a large golden doodle. We had PLENTY of space without getting underfoot of each other, both upstairs and down. The kitchen is every bit as useful as it is beautiful -- we had no trouble cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner complete with 14lb turkey, two kinds of stuffing, mashed potatoes, mashed rutabagas, and Gulliver's corn (think Oaxacan street corn meets a midwestern casserole). All of this to say, this is a kitchen that can handle some serious cooking! Staying in this house truly makes you feel just like you're a resident of the gorgeous and historic Hill District. Sumptuous woodwork, comfy yet elegant furniture, and thoughtful touches like a Keurig coffee stations on every floor make this place a MUST-STAY in Saint Paul. My family is already talking about coming to stay in the summer so we can enjoy more of the neighborhood by foot in warmer weather. The house lends itself very well the winter, and we'd guess the summer would be lovely too (we didn't use the 3 season room due to the setting in of the winter chill).

The Great Gatsby meets Downton Abbey.

Our stay at this property was nothing short of magical! Stepping into this house felt like entering the world of The Great Gatsby meets Downton Abbey. The opulence and attention to detail in every corner transported us to a bygone era of sophistication and grandeur. The living spaces were breathtaking, with intricate woodwork, vintage-inspired decor, and plush furnishings that made every moment feel luxurious. The dining room, with its stately table and sparkling chandelier, made our dinners unforgettable experiences. The bedrooms were equally impressive—each with its own character, offering both comfort and charm. The host went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect, providing excellent communication throughout. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind experience filled with elegance, history, and timeless beauty, this property is an absolute must. We can't wait to return!

Beautiful family wedding gathering

We rented this home for our family to gather for our daughter’s St Paul wedding. We enjoyed the beautiful home for our kids and grandkids to be together, as well as our pre wedding photos. The kids enjoyed the top floor space. The wedding photos from the beautiful main floor and pretty grounds promise to be stunning. Communication was easy and prompt. We had everything we needed for a great long weekend. I highly recommend!

Amazing place for a family Wedding weekend!

I don't even know where to start...the experience was so amazing, our family is already planning the next visit!! Communication from the very beginning was always prompt and efficient. The host went above and beyond to meet all of our requests and accommodate us when we ran into flight issues, she made it easy to extend our stay an extra day and even provided an extra key when we locked ourselves out on the main event day. The house is already beautiful on the outside but its an absolute dream when you walk in and venture through the 3 floors of carefully decorated and upscale amenities. Every detail is thought out so carefully to make your stay like home. We had a group of 15 and used the dining room for a special dinner night, had a blast in the 3rd floor playroom watching the boxing event, cooked meals and found everything necessary and more. On the day of the wedding, the groom and his groomsmen got ready in the house and we used different areas for beautiful pictures of him and the family. The house is equipped with a bar area and an ice machine with mini fridge. This area came in so handy for the weekend. We stocked up and everyone enjoyed cocktails throughout the weekend. Everyone always had a place for personal space. There are endless sitting areas for alone time. The kitchen is where we gathered and it had plenty of space for the group to enjoy breakfast and meals. There are coffee stations on every floor which was a plus!! Thank you again!!

Beautiful home and experience

I’ve driven through the Summit area and always wanted to see inside the homes. When I found a home on Summit to rent, I knew it was meant to be! The home was absolutely beautiful! There was room for everyone! What we enjoyed most is being able to sit in one of several rooms and visit with one another. Linda also was so easy to work with and VERY accommodating. I would recommend this home over and over again!

Most Beautiful House I've Ever Stayed In!

This house is even more beautiful in-person - WOW! It's like a real life version of the house from Clue... and I'm Mrs. Peacock in the library. Seriously, though, there are as many sitting rooms as bedrooms, making the house perfect for socializing as a group. It's rare to find a house with 6+ bedrooms that all have Queen/King beds. As a group of adults, we struggle to find rental homes without bunk beds, and this house is just perfect. The neighborhood is quiet and lovely - just a 10-minute walk from many shops, restaurants, and bars. We would absolutely be thrilled to stay here again.

Lovely stay on Summit

We had three families with kids ranging from newborn to 12 years old. This house every thing we needed. It was the perfect size for all of the families to have their own space/bathroom. We had great communication from host with quick answers to our questions and very helpful. Great location! It is close to downtown and restaurants. We would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun stay in St. Paul!

Best Vacation Home

This gorgeous, historic home was perfect for our family of 15. We loved the spacious layout, beautiful tree-lined neighborhood, fenced backyard for our toddlers, the third floor which allowed teens their separate space, ample kitchen and much more. Location gave us easy access to restaurants and shops on Grand Avenue. Host was super gracious and easy to work with. Everyone in our family is eager to return for another visit.

Wedding weekend with a large family

I reserved this historical house for my son's wedding weekend. Our party includes 5 families with 13 members. Everyone loves comfotable beds, spacious rooms, and lovely neighborhood. Check-in process was so easy. The host, Linda, let me in early the house, so I can prepare the house ready for guests. There were capsule coffee machines every floor and plenty of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa available. There were another living room on the third floor equipped with pingpong table, fridge, sink, and sun room. One family with teens stayed there. Teens loved about having privacy at their own disposal. When I had a problem with a gas stove on Saturday afternoon, Linda replied quick and had her husband resolved the problem. He was so kind and very helpful. I really appreciated their quick response. The house also has so many antiques we can look around. Everyone agreeded it's like a museum. There are lots of places to look and eat in the neighborhood as well. I stronly recommend this place anybody with a big party planning. It's perfect place for a family union and an eventful gathering. We really enjoyed staying here and wish coming back in the future. Linda, thanks for being great host. .

Fantastic Getaway

We spent an extended long weekend for a multi-generational family girls trip. This beautiful home has everything you could possibly need and the owners are very easy to reach and super helpful. The home is very clean and the many bedrooms and bathrooms make it perfect for large group and/or multi family gathering. Lots of indoor and outdoor space to gather all together, and also room to spread out if different members of your group are doing different things. Close to great shopping & restaurants and it’s a beautiful and safe area to walk. Amazing history to explore within the house and the area. This is a heritage home but updated with all modern comforts while preserving historical detail. The beds are firm and comfortable with lots of closet space. The bathrooms are in excellent working order. We loved having dinner in the beautiful dining room where all could fit around the table. The owners thought of every little touch to make our stay easy, comfortable and inviting - from the cozy robes in every room, to a very well-stocked kitchen! There are dishes and containers and anything you could need. The teenagers loved the 3rd floor ping pong table and space away from the moms and grandmas! We enjoyed the board games and spent so much time in the beautiful sunroom visiting. Highly recommend this home and host. Thank you for a great stay!!

Even Better Than Photos/Description!

I could go on & on about how great this property is, but just suffice it to say that every one of the folks in our party was blown away by the awesomeness. The convenient location is outstanding... in a safe neighborhood nestled high on a hill with an amazing view overlooking the city and surrounded by history and natural beauty. It is close (walkable) to many restaurants and to all downtown St. Paul has to offer. This historic gem was oozing with the character and charm of a bygone era, while also boasting modern conveniences. Seems that every detail was considered - we wanted for nothing during our stay that wasn't provided. Communication with our host was excellent - she was simply a pleasure to deal with and went over-and-above to ensure we had the best, most enjoyable stay possible. Simply exceptional in every way! Thanks Linda for helping us create great memories!

About the host

Hosted by Linda Wutzke

Host profile image
Jeff and I are students of history and architecture, and enjoy homes with beautiful detail. We have remodeled many homes over the years, but with our move to St Paul have found a new passion for restoration, and our experience with remodeling is now channeled into preserving and saving these historic gems, and now we get to share a remarkable historic home with our guests!

Why they chose this property

We have enjoyed living in the west suburbs of the Twin Cities for a long time, but eventually found we wanted to live in the same type of place we look for when we vacation: a beautiful location within easy walking distance to coffee, shops, and a beverage or two. What we stumbled on was a step back in time to a quiet neighborhood in the middle of the city, where neighbors share wine on front porches while kids run barefoot up and down the sidewalks. Magic.

What makes this property unique

This home is designed by Cass Gilbert, one of our nation's first nationally known architects, who designed the MN state capitol building, the Supreme Court building and the Woolworth's building, New York City's first "skyscraper" among others, and we are very pleased to share its beauty with others! --We still marvel at the leaded glass windows, hand carved woodwork, ornate detail, and heavy pocket doors. The many rooms and front and back stairs make the home a fun place for youngsters to explore! --You will find your hosts living right next door, working to preserve another 1889 home, in yet another Cass Gilbert designed home worth saving!
