About this property

Gwynn’s Island getaway with private sandy beach.

Welcome to Nabors on The Bay, a wonderful beach cottage with its very own private beach and dock. Need to get away for a while? You've come to the perfect place.

Our beach bungalow is outfitted in a charming and nostalgic bohemian style that takes away the stresses of land life the moment you walk through the door.

The minute you cross the historic drawbridge onto Gwynn's Island, you know you've arrived in a special place. Driving past the island marina, taking in the charming homes, large plots of land, and the island museum will only add to your excitement as you approach our seaside cottage.

You’ll love sitting on the beach spotting the Chesapeake Bay wildlife: dolphins, ospreys, bald eagles, herons, pelicans, and more. The sandy-bottomed beach is perfect for relaxing, splashing, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and of course fishing! After enjoying a watercolor-perfect sunset (or sunrise), the firepit facing the water will only enhance the relaxation the sound of the waves will bring you. Even the fall and winter months bring a special beauty to the island.

Our home is located on a private shell and gravel-lined road, with a posted speed limit of 7mph. This lends itself wonderfully to an stress-free, relaxing stay in this quiet beach community. The slow lane makes leisurely walks or bike rides safe and enjoyable for the entire family.

The cottage is set up to sleep up to six people in three bedrooms. The two bedrooms on the first floor are each outfitted with king-sized beds. The loft bedroom on the second floor has a pair of green tea-infused memory foam full-sized beds.

The enclosed front porch, lined with windows on three sides, includes a beautiful antique dining table with seating for six. You can enjoy the view of the Bay right out the front windows. On the other side of the same Bay-facing room, you’ll find a cozy sitting area with seating that includes a modern record player with a fun collection of records from the 1940s-today. This is our favorite place to listen to old tunes or cozy up with a well-loved book.
The living room enjoys a new 55” ROKU smart TV. Log in to your favorite streaming apps and enjoy the views of the Chesapeake Bay in the background in addition to your favorite program. A Blu-ray player with surround sound compliments the TV perfectly for those must-have movie nights. The three bedrooms also have flat screen ROKU TVs.
High-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the cottage and ensures strong coverage and connection for all your connectivity and streaming needs. Throughout the cottage you’ll find games, a selection of movies, and even coloring books for both the adults and children enjoying their stay. Also, located throughout the entire cottage you will find an enormous lending library of books of all genres and for all age groups. We encourage the “take a book, leave a book” practice. Haven’t finished the book you started during your stay? That’s quite alright, we understand. Take it with you.

The adorable kitchen is equipped with a chef’s electric range, a large-capacity microwave, and a full-sized refrigerator. Other useful appliances include a toaster, a kettle, as well as a single-cup coffee maker that takes grounds or kcups. The kitchen is outfitted with almost anything you need to make a family meal- dinnerware, pots/pans, colander, mixings bowls, and baking sheets as well. An island for additional prep completes the kitchen and offers a wonderful place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a workspace to inspect the day’s beach finds. A charcoal grill sits just outside the kitchen door ready to prepare the day’s catch or the fresh seafood you picked up from the nearby seafood market in Mathews.

A shed in the backyard is fully loaded with all the things you’ll need to make use of the private beach: beach chairs, kayaks, a paddleboard, bicycles, cornhole, fishing poles, crab traps, and more are available at no additional cost.

Attention boaters – do you have a low draft boat (sub-18”) that you may want to bring on vacation with you? Ask us to learn more about docking the boat in the inlets right in the backyard! That’s right – there’s water access both in front and behind the cottage. Go crabbing right off the back pier!

For the sightseers and adventurers alike, don’t worry – there are things for you to enjoy too. While the beach life may be quiet and serene, you’re not far from things to do. Take a trip into the town of Mathews, just voted in 2022 as “Most Charming Chesapeake Town”, sharing that title in a tie with historic Yorktown. It has rural charm, antique stores, an amazing library, and fantastic restaurants. This is also where you’ll find the Food Lion, the regional grocery store. From April through October, enjoy the Mathew’s Farm Market which boasts fresh produce, artisan goods, live music, and more. There’s even a Friends of the Library used bookstore open every Saturday, 10-2, year-round.

Looking for more adventure? Wander any of the side roads and end up at a beach, come across an old cemetery, or even sightsee the glorious old southern homes. Make a pit stop at any of the antique stores along the way. Take an afternoon and drive down to Yorktown (a mere 45-minute drive), farther south to Virginia Beach, or for a full day adventure, drive around the Bay (or take your boat across!) to Cape Charles, even up to Chincoteague & Assateague to see the wild ponies and all the little seaside towns in between.

Need a little more of an adrenaline rush before heading back to island life? No need to worry. Historic Williamsburg and Busch Gardens is barely an hour away. Take in all the rides, coasters, and carnival food before coming back to island time.

Nabors on the Bay has something for everyone. It’s the perfect getaway.

For your stay, there is a self-check-in with a combination lock box. There is no need for you to meet anyone or coordinate schedules for access. You can come at your leisure – the true island way.

Smoking is prohibited.

Monthly discounts are available.

Fantastic Stay at this Beach Cottage!

We had an amazing time at this charming beach cottage. The location was perfect, just a short walk to a beautiful, quiet beach where we spent hours collecting sea glass. Our dogs were also welcome, which made our stay even more special! The neighborhood was peaceful, and the neighbors were friendly, adding to the relaxed, community feel of the area. The owner was excellent in communicating with us, always quick to respond and very helpful with any questions we had. One of the highlights of our trip was dining at Hole in the Wall, an awesome restaurant on the island with great food and atmosphere. We couldn't have asked for a better vacation and can’t wait to return!

Gwynn Island Gem

A dreamy eastern shore beach community, where I felt like I had returned to the past, with the exception of all the modern amenities and comforts. Perfect for my varied interest family of six, we beached, swam, biked, kayaked, fished (sort of :), and a lot of the time just sat there soaking up the amazing view on our own little private slice of heaven. Family dinners and movie nights in the evening around a backdrop of classic beach cottage. The host were very accommodating and gracious with our needs. The property vibe was inviting, comfy, and was well apportioned with all the little extra odds and ends. Clearly, time and thought was put in to the guest experience from bookworm to sportster and everywhere in between. Thank you and we hope to see you next year.

Romantic 50th anniversary stay

An island getaway for our 50th anniversary- perfect ! Our gracious hosts allowed us to check in early and to our amazement they even had an anniversary card with a bottle of champagne waiting for us. The weather was stormy on arrival, watching the ocean was amazing as we cuddled up. We caught crabs off the dock and the crab boil was delicious. We brought Mahi at the local seafood market and grilled it, just like we had on our honeymoon. Beautiful for walks and biking. My daughter and family joined us for the weekend. My 14yo granddaughter wanted to take the loft bedroom home. The decor was beachy and fun. Comfortable furnishings. What a selection of books too!! The hosts supplied a lot of unexpected niceties. We would love to return, really enjoyed the cabin and the area. was stormy the beginning

Peaceful retreat

There were no surprises with this location. It was exactly as stated. It was very clean and well kept. The location is tremendous. If you love nature and a peaceful environment you could not ask for anything better. The house was a typical beach house and very eclectic on the inside which was adorable. I brought 5 books with me and I didn't need them at all. There were hundreds of best sellers everywhere. I did read my books but I was able to get two in from the house while we were there. We would definitely come back to this house again.

Beautiful Beachside Retreat

We had a wonderful week at Nabors on the Bay. The house was the best vrbo rental we've ever had. It was accurately described and thoughtfully outfitted and decorated. The rental was spotless and the kitchen and bathroom were both completely functional. The island is pretty small and not remote, but removed. Having access to the private beach was great and we saw dolphins twice. The shed is outfitted with bikes and kayak gear for your adventuring needs. Jen and Kevin were responsive the entire time, including when I had a bit of a panic attack over having no cell reception to get the access about an hour out from arrival. They were able to text us the code and we were able to use the wifi for phone needs afterwards. Jen was even good enough to text us about things we left behind. This is a beautiful spot for family vacation and to just unplug.

A nice cottage with a wonderful beach

We had a perfect quiet beach vacation. The water was wonderful. Private beach. Warm and quiet water, like a lake, sometimes with small waves. We enjoyed swimming and playing on the beach. Saw a group of dolphins, crabs, a great blue heron. The cottage as described. A quiet, nice, and comfortable to stay for a vacation. The neighborhood is quiet and very friendly. Gwynns has a reach history. Private beaches (no public beach line), a quiet bay life. Mathews town is a quick drive. Few restaurants that work few days a week, Several little cute stores -art, clothes, antiques, A Food Lion. A library, Mathews and the county -small and charming. No much development. A perfect beach vacation. Good communications with owners.

Cozy cottage life

Lovely stay in a spotless and thoughtful cottage. Extra touches, like wireless chargers, added to the ease of settling in. Hosts were excellent. Note to future renters: bring plenty of your own towels for beach use, like 3 per person! No washer/dryer/ice maker, mid-stay trash service, or dishwasher, so the daily activities need a bit more work. Love, love the little beach area!

Perfect stay

This beach cottage had absolutely every little touch to make our stay comfortable. The decorations are cute, but tasteful, and I especially appreciated the library of available books. The private beach is ideal for a peaceful vacation, and the backyard with dock gave us a fascinating view of the crabs and other local wildlife. The owners were very communicative and responsive to every need and even left treats for our dogs. It is just a wonderful place!

Beautiful, relaxing getaway!

We absolutely LOVED this place! The house was cozy and welcoming, and the sunroom was a favorite spot to put on a record and curl up in the recliner and read, with a pretty view of the beach. The private beach was a perfect swimming spot, and we also went antiquing in nearby surrounding areas. This is such a peaceful and beautiful gem away from all of the traffic of the more "touristy" areas. We hope to come back next year!

Great Getaway

The property and cottage were as advertised. We really enjoyed our week there. Very peaceful, quiet and relaxing. The owners were very responsive and helpful with all of our questions and concerns. Would absolutely recommend to family and friends, will consider staying there again. The one thing that I think would make for a better stay would be a nice grill.

Gwynn’s Island Gem

Property just as described…very cute and comfortable. Loved the amenities provided!!! The private beach was awesome and it was right across the street making it easy for using the kayaks or for going fishing. Plus the location is only an hour away if you want to visit Busch Gardens and even less to Yorktown. Would definitely book this property again.

Why they chose this property

Gwynn’s Island on the Chesapeake Bay—is the perfect mix of seclusion, natural beauty, and small-town charm. Here’s why it’s such a special choice:

1. True Peace & Privacy
• Private beach and dock mean no crowds —just your own quiet slice of the Bay.
• The low-traffic island setting offers a slower pace of life, perfect for unwinding.

2. Stunning Natural Surroundings
• Enjoy panoramic water views, wildlife like dolphins and bald eagles, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.
• The sandy-bottom Bay is ideal for swimming, kayaking, fishing, or simply wading in the shallows.

3. Authentic Coastal Virginia
• Gwynn’s Island is untouched and steeped in history, offering a more authentic and intimate experience than busier tourist spots.
• The nearby town of Mathews is full of charm, with antique shops, local eats, and welcoming locals.

4. Central, Yet Hidden
• You’re within an hour of historic Williamsburg, Yorktown, Virginia Beach, and Busch Gardens, making this a great base for day trips.
• But once you cross the island’s drawbridge, it feels like a world away from it all.

5. All-Season Getaway
• Summer brings beach days and boating.
• Fall and winter are quiet, cozy, and romantic—great for fireside reading, stargazing, or holiday escapes.

In short, we choose this location to disconnect from the chaos, reconnect with nature, and recharge in a setting that’s both peaceful and full of things to explore.

What makes this property unique

This property stands out for several reasons that make it truly unique and memorable:

1. Private Beach & Dock

Few rentals offer direct access to a private, sandy-bottom beach and a dock—perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or just unwinding by the water without the crowds.

2. Dual Water Access

With waterfront on both the front and back of the property, guests get a rare waterfront experience—ideal for boating, crabbing, wildlife spotting, or simply enjoying the views from every angle.

3. Authentic Island Experience

Situated on historic Gwynn’s Island, accessed via a drawbridge, the property offers a true island lifestyle—quiet, secluded, and steeped in local history and small-town charm.

4. Charming Bohemian Style

The cottage’s boho-meets-vintage décor creates a cozy, nostalgic vibe that sets it apart from generic beach rentals. From the record player and antique dining table to the lending library, every detail feels warm and personal.

5. Fully-Equipped for Adventure & Relaxation

Guests have free access to kayaks, paddleboard, bikes, crab traps, and more, stored conveniently in the backyard shed—an amenity package that goes above and beyond.

6. All-Season Appeal

While summer is perfect for beach fun, fall and winter bring their own quiet magic—think misty mornings, fires by the bay, and cozy reading nooks with waterfront views.

7. Ideal for Families, Couples, or Small Groups

With multiple king beds, a family-friendly loft, plenty of entertainment, and loads of outdoor gear, it’s a great fit for both adventurous and laid-back guests of all ages.

8. Prime Location for Exploring Coastal Virginia

Located within easy reach of Mathews, Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Chincoteague, guests can enjoy both peaceful seclusion and exciting day trips.
